Land and Spirit The picture book
Written & illustrated by Tommy Kearney
for my nephew Leslie and Cassie’s family in Melbourne, Allegra Tristan Xavier Sebastian Isla & Layla
In a land down under, on an island by the sea, there lived a family of penguins. They were little penguins. Their island had a beach, lots of rocks and sloping hills. In the sloping hills, the little penguins had dug holes named burrows. Each penguin lived in a burrow. They were very safe, and they were very happy.
When the sun was shining, they played games on the sand. They hopped, and they waddled. However, when it rained, they hid inside their burrows in the hills. They were very happy. 7
Around the island, the fish swam in the water in the sea. They were very happy to swim all day long. They swam and swam, racing each other through the water.
8
9
Kulija, a little penguin, lived on the island. He was a good swimmer, and he liked to race the other little penguins in the sea. He was sure he could win any race. He was the fastest penguin on the island.
10
11
12
All the little penguins liked to swim and play in the water. They would play chase, and they would race. Kulija won every race and was very happy.
13
14
After the last race, Kulija became very hungry. He decided to chase some fish. Fish are his favourite food. As Kulija was fast, he could easily catch the fish.
15
Kulija ate all the fish until he could eat no more. The other fish, again, swam in the sea. There was plenty.
16
17
Kulija swam back to the island. He had travelled so far, it was very dark when he got home. He was very tired. Kulija looked up at the moon and the stars and yawned. He was very sleepy then went home to his burrow.
18
19
The next day, Kulija decided he would eat more fish for breakfast. He dived into the ocean and chased the fish.
20
21
A very hungry leopard seal was also looking for his breakfast. His favourite food was little penguins.
22
23
Kulija was in danger. The hungry leopard seal chased Kulija. The leopard seal chased and chased and chased. The little penguin swam for his life. Kulija had to win this race!
24
Kulija swam and swam, looking for a safe place to escape the hungry leopard seal. Kulija needed to get out of the ocean. He swam, and he swam, looking for rocks to jump onto, but still, the leopard seal chased. The leopard seal opened his mouth, ready to snap!
25
When Kulija jumped out of the water and onto the sand, Kulija was safe. Still hungry the leopard seal swam away.

Isla was also at Brighton Beach. She wore a special dress for a wedding as her Mum and Dad got married earlier. Isla was so happy to see the little penguin on the sand.

“Look, Layla. A little penguin!” said Isla. Layla laughed to see the cute little penguin. Isla and Layla decided to play a game with the little penguin and followed the little penguin over the sand. The little penguin was going to be their friend.

31
Isla and Layla’s brothers, Tristan and Xavier, watched the girls following the little penguin from across the beach.
32
The little penguin waddled towards a beach hut. Isla and Layla followed, copying the penguin’s waddle. The penguin and the girls went behind the beach hut. Xavier and Tristan ran to Isla and Layla. They had to make sure their sisters were safe. They ran behind the beach hut.

At the back of the beach hut, Tristan and Xavier saw Isla, Layla and the little penguin slipping through a hole in the fence. Tristan and Xavier climbed over the fence and followed.
35
Sebastian and Allegra saw their brothers running after their sisters and followed them. They, too, climbed the fence at the back of the beach hut.
