Week3 constructing journal This week’s tutorial was more focusing on the site visiting. As we went around almost the whole campus, different kinds of construction types were shown. Firstly, according to the observation of the Eastern Resource Centre, the main construction type of this building is mass concrete construction.

As we can see that from the photo, the most loads are supported by the beams. And most of the loads are supported in the middle. The vertical column supports the glasses and the most weight of the roof. Also, inside the building, it is a steel frame and gets the timber materials. On the top of the roof, there are numbers of holes which are used for absorbing the noise. Secondly, different from the ERC building, the MSLE building is linking two different kinds of buildings. It uses the timber to support the roof. And the same as the ERC Building, it is also the type of mass concrete construction. It uses timer to support the roof because of the economics. Therefore, we can see that to choose the material for the building, not only from the needs of structure, but also from the economic aspects. On the left side of the connection, the building uses double brick structure to support the building. And inside the building, steel beams are used for supporting the glasses and carrying the loads. There are also including lots of joints to be the connection of the beams on the walls.

Thirdly, the Ormond Theology Centre is a kind of steel frame structure which including the concrete slabs, timber, normal sheet glasses and other kinds of materials. Out of the building, so many columns are shown to support the frame and the horizontal members. Columns seem to be the most important parts of the whole structure to support the building.

Then, although we were a little bit far from Queens College Extention, we could still find that the building is the double brick construction. And it is combined with concrete slab panel and timber frames. Columns support the structure.

As there is a building project which has been built a basement of the structure, we can still find the steel reinforcement and timber sheets. We might find more about the building when we get into there for the deep observation next week.

The following map is the one I have taken some notes inside. And the most description is above.
