ABOUT KEENELAND SALES “It is a tremendous honor for Keeneland to have sold racing’s newest Triple Crown winner, Justify,” Keeneland President and CEO Bill Thomason said June 9 after China Horse Club International, WinStar Farm, Starlight Racing and Head of Plains Partners’ undefeated colt won the Belmont (G1) to become the 13th Triple Crown winner. Justify, who sold for $500,000 at Keeneland’s 2016 September Yearling Sale, exemplifies the success of graduates – both in North America and internationally – of the September Sale. Keeneland, the world’s leading Thoroughbred auction house, sells more champions and stakes winners than any other sales company while offering state-ofthe-art facilities and a range of amenities for its diverse international clients. Each year, buyers from nearly every state and as many as 50 countries on six continents participate in Keeneland sales. Joining the September Sale are the November Breeding Stock and January Horses of All Ages sales. In April 2019, Keeneland will resume its Two-Year-Olds in Training Sale with the addition of an offering of horses of racing age. Keeneland employs a year-round outreach strategy to recruit buyers from across the U.S. and all corners of the world. Sales staff travel throughout the year and work closely with Keeneland representatives in Europe, Australasia, China and Japan.

Globalization of the Thoroughbred industry has been occurring for more than a decade. The racing and breeding world is smaller thanks to the proliferation of stallions shuttling between Northern and Southern hemispheres and the popularity of Americans teaming with foreign partners to race in the U.S. and abroad. This “cross-pollination” is healthy for the entire industry.

Foreign investors come to Central Kentucky, and specifically to Keeneland, to buy their source broodmares and enhance the commercial appeal of their stock. American pedigrees carry speed, and foreign breeders want to infuse that speed into their horses back home. Their Keeneland purchases form the foundation bloodlines for Thoroughbreds in Central and South America, Asia, South Africa, Russia and India.

WELCOME TO THE 2018 SEPTEMBER YEARLING SALE New format covers Week 1 of auction
2018 September Sale Format
Keeneland has cataloged 4,538 yearlings for its 75th annual Keeneland September Yearling Sale, the world’s most important sale of Thoroughbreds, to be held Sept. 10-23. The auction, which attracts major buyers from around the world, produces horses that compete at the highest level of racing. Led this year by Triple Crown winner Justify and four-time Grade 1 winner Monomoy Girl, alumni have won a total of 155 graded or group stakes in North America and internationally through Sept. 3.
As announced in July, Keeneland adjusted the format of Week 1 of the 2018 sale, with Book 1 encompassing the auction’s first four days versus the single-session Book 1 held last year. A total of 989 yearlings are cataloged in Book 1, which covers sessions on Sept. 10-13.
“The unparalleled strengths of the September Sale are the quantity of outstanding yearlings at all price levels and the deepest buying bench globally in the industry,” Keeneland Vice President of Racing and Sales Bob Elliston said. “This year was an historic one for the September Sale with graduate Justify becoming racing’s newest Triple Crown winner. This is another milestone in a sale with a record of consistently producing world-class athletes.”
Week 1 (Book 1) – Monday-Thursday, Sept. 10-13. Sessions begin at 11 a.m. ET daily. Friday, Sept. 14 – The traditional “dark day” when no sale will be conducted. Weekend (Book 2) – Saturday-Sunday, Sept. 15-16. Sessions begin at 10 a.m. Week 2 (Books 3-6) – Monday-Sunday, Sept. 17-23. Sessions begin at 10 a.m.
Among the exciting highlights of the 2018 September Sale catalog are the first yearlings by 2015 Triple Crown winner American Pharoah.
Keeneland will present live gavel-to-gavel coverage of the entire September Sale at Keeneland.com.
The format for the September Sale, which features 13 sessions, one more than last year, is as follows:
TVG will offer live coverage of Book 1 featuring on-site reporting from Scott Hazelton. continued on page 4 3

Recap of 2017 September Sale A buoyant market and abundance of quality horses produced soaring results for the 2017 September Sale. During the 12-day sale, commerce achieved heights not seen in nearly a decade. A spectacular crop of yearlings spurred bidding wars among domestic and foreign buyers, driving gross receipts above $300 million for the first time since 2008, while producing record average and median prices.
September Sale Seller Bonus Program In support of Keeneland’s mission to reinvest in its customers and strengthen the Thoroughbred industry, Keeneland last year introduced the September Sale Seller Bonus Program that offers cash rewards to sellers (owners at the time of sale) of horses sold at the auction that win Grade or Group 1, 2 or 3 stakes as a 2- or 3-year-old.
September Sale graduates also have shone internationally this year, led by such 2018 group winners as Hawkbill (Dubai Sheema Classic-G1 and Dubai City of Gold Sponsored by Emirates Skycargo-G2), Mendelssohn (UAE Derby Sponsored by Saeed & Mohammed Al Naboodah Group-G2) and Shamaal Nibras (Jebel Ali Mile Sponsored by Shadwell Farm-G3) in Dubai, Mozu Ascot (Yasuda Kinen-G1) in Japan, Roaring Lion (Juddmonte International-G1, Coral-Eclipse-G1 and Betfred Dante-G2), Thundering Blue (Sky Bet York-G2) and Order of St George (IRE) (Vintage Crop-G3) in England.

Thirteen horses fetched $1 million or more versus nine in 2016 and were bought either individually or in partnership by nine different buyers. Eight of the seven-figure horses sold in the opening-day Book 1 session. The September Sale benefited from an exceptionally deep buying bench that was a healthy mix of American and international interests. Seventy-five unique buyers spent more than $1 million during the auction. Foreign buyers made more than $80 million in purchases. The sale’s three highest-priced yearlings were progeny of Tapit. M.V. Magnier paid $2.7 million for the sale-topper, a full sister to 2017 Gold Cup at Santa Anita (G1) winner Cupid consigned by VanMeter-Gentry Sales, agent. Whisper Hill Farm went to $2.6 million for a colt from the family of multiple Grade 1 winner Gun Runner from the consignment of Taylor Made Sales Agency, agent. Shadwell acquired the aforementioned colt out of Tiz Miz Sue for $2.5 million. For the eighth consecutive year, the September Sale produced the top-priced yearling sold at public auction in North America.

SEPTEMBER YEARLING SALE 75TH ANNUAL
The Keeneland September Yearling Sale has evolved from humble beginnings to become the global marketplace for Thoroughbred yearlings.
Keeneland/Photos by Z
From 1944, the inaugural year, through 1948, the fall yearlings were sold in an auction which included broodmares, weanlings, stallions and horses of other ages. In 1949, approximately half of the yearlings were sold in a separate October sale and the remainder in a November mixed stock sale as usual. In 1950, the yearlings were sold separately by session, but in the same week as the other stock. In 1951, the fall yearling sales were set farther apart from the fall mixed stock sale, with the yearling auctions preceding the other sale by a week or more. In 1960, the yearling sales were moved to September. In 1981, the yearling sale was held in two four-day segments. Selected sessions were inaugurated in 1989. Coolmore’s M.V. Magnier paid $2.7 million for the highest-priced horse of the 2017 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, a filly by Tapit who is a full sister to 2017 Gold Cup at Santa Anita (G1) winner Cupid.
