INNOVATION
“The entire Torah is called a shir, a song, (Deut. 31:19). The essence and the beauty of our song unfolds when all the various voices join together.” R. Yechiel Michel Epstein in the intro of Arukh haShulkhan to Choshen Mishpat
We honor and celebrate the diverse voices of learners, teachers and leaders who have come together, for generations, to create the magnificent song that is Hebrew College. sucfv kf Congratulations to all of the honorees. May you continue to go from strength to strength.
With gratitude from the Grossman, Polivy and Sands families
With gratitude to Louis Grossman and Rabbi Ma’ayan Sands and the Grossman/Sands family for your devoted dedication to inspired Jewish teaching, learning and renewal. Mazal Tov! With gratitude to Hebrew College and to our Beloved Teachers who Teach with Love, and bring us Light. Harold and Rabbi Jamie Kotler
Dear Friends, Welcome to Hebrew College’s 2017 Gala. The celebratory gathering this evening takes place midway between Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Memorial Day, the commemoration of the Jewish people’s most devastating tragedy, and Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel Independence Day, one of the most jubilant days in the Jewish calendar. The Passover seder experienced just a few weeks ago leads us through a process that begins with the Jewish people’s degradation and culminates in praise of God for our liberation. As we read in the weekday prayer book, we aspire to go from “from darkness to light, and from oppression to freedom.”
WELCOME
A similar movement from darkness to light is felt in this period of the Jewish year as we turn from our deepest sorrow in remembering the Shoah to joy in the rebirth of our Jewish homeland. Judaism focuses on this process of communal transformation, and as the Passover seder teaches, deep learning can serve as the catalyst for such transformation. Tonight, as we stand in this liminal moment, we acknowledge the power of Jewish learning to shape the vision and nurture the courage necessary to lead us forward toward a better future. Hebrew College’s sacred mission is to bring powerful and compelling Jewish education to those who seek Judaism’s profound wisdom and who aspire to serve as inspired leaders of the community. The honorees tonight exemplify a commitment to Jewish learning that has enabled them to draw from Judaism’s wells of wisdom as the source of their leadership. Louis, Rabbi Ma’ayan and Susan has each studied in Hebrew College programs. Our Me’ah adult education course, our master’s program in Jewish Studies and our rabbinical school have provided these leaders with the intellectual and spiritual resources to form a deep foundation of Jewish leadership. Hebrew College and the entire community have benefited greatly from their dedication, generosity and hard work. They share a love of Jewish learning and have made it possible for others to bask in the light of our tradition. We thank all of you for your support and participation as we celebrate Hebrew College and the wonderful learners and leaders we inspire. Jewish learning is at the center of the Jewish story of transformation, and we are proud to play a part in enabling more and more people to engage in Jewish learning that leads to transformative leadership. May Hebrew College, our honorees, the Jewish people and the State of Israel continue to move us from darkness to light, from oppression to freedom, from ignorance to knowledge and from passivity to courageous leadership.

Rabbi Ma’ayan Sands received rabbinic ordination from the Rabbinical School of Hebrew College in June, 2016. Jewish family education is her “soul’s work,” her passion.
In 2016, Rabbi Sands published her first children’s book entitled Does God Have Ears That Really Work? She does family readings of the book, using it as a foundation to help parents talk with their children about God. She is currently working on a second manuscript. Ma’ayan and her husband, Rick, are blessed to have four adult children and their life partners. They have three grandchildren and counting…

HONORING
Ma’ayan received her Master’s in Jewish Studies from Hebrew College in 1993, at which time she was the Hebrew valedictorian. Simultaneously, she received a certificate both in family education and in pastoral care. She has been a hospital chaplain and has served as the Rabbi in several local senior facilities. Currently, Ma’ayan is a visiting Rabbi at Congregation Mishkan Tefillah in Brookline.
RABBI MA’AYAN SANDS
For six years she was the Family Educator at Temple Israel of Natick and subsequently was the Director of BJEP, an independent Hebrew School located on the campus of Brandeis University. During those years she was nationally recognized for having created and implemented innovative and progressive curricula for all ages, including families, toddlers, seniors and everyone in between.

FROM YOUR RABBI
SUSAN AIN
In Megilat Ester, Esther’s Jewishness is hidden for the early part of the story. The Hebrew root of Esther’s very name means hidden. How wonderfully ironic it is, then, that our beloved Susan Ain is receiving the Esther Award for Leadership and Philanthropy, because there is nothing hidden at all about Susan’s leadership or her philanthropy. She lives her values. Her resume bespeaks her leadership. She has been on the Hebrew College Board for 10 years and the Chair of the Board. She also eats her own cooking. She has studied at the very university she has led, earning a Master’s in Jewish Studies and completing the Me’ah program. But it is her character that proclaims the “out” quality of her leadership even more than her résumé. Susan is open, fearless, strong, articulate. She is also passionate about Hebrew College. To speak to her is to feel the love she feels. When Esther finds her voice, it is in service of the Jewish future. So too, Susan, may your works be revealed today and every day as a shining beacon for us to follow. May your leadership for Hebrew College and for our people inspire us all to roll up our sleeves and work passionately for the Jewish future with you. And may you continue to role model, being a learning and striving Jew. With great admiration and love, Your Temple Emanuel Family

To the Grossman Family…
In Torah, Abraham and Sarah are told that because of them, “all of the families of the earth will be blessed by you” (Genesis 12:3). Through your family’s love—from generation to generation—you have brought Torah’s light to life—graciously sharing a precious radiance of goodness, compassion, learning, and healing. We are indeed blessed by you. And we are grateful. May the light of your lives continue to illumine the lives of others. May Louis and the entire Grossman family continue along its sacred life-journey in good health, happiness, and fulfillment. And may the blessings that you continually bring lead to a time when, indeed, all of the families of the earth will experience justice, prosperity, and peace. Amen. RABBI MA’AYAN SANDS
When Abram got a new name, it was because he acquired a new character and mission. Abraham is the covenanted partner of God. So too, when Amy Sands became Rabbi Ma’ayan Sands, she shared a new character and mission. She had internalized years of powerful learning at the Hebrew College Rabbinical School. She had emerged from her illness with an even deeper love of life. In our community, and in others where she teaches, Rabbi Sands role models a passion for justice and righteousness, for learning and growing, and for affirming life. Ma’ayan, your Temple Emanuel family loves you and is so proud of you. May you continue to inspire all of us by the power of your personal example. With great admiration and love, Your Temple Emanuel Family
Mazal Tov to Rabbi Ma’ayan Sands for being honored at the 2017 Hebrew College Gala. The TBZ community joins me in congratulating you. You are a true leader who cares for Jewish education and inspires both students and friends with beautiful words of Torah. Your dedication and strength is admirable. When faced with challenges, you stood with courage and faith, finding blessings even in moments of pain. Your persistence and vision are vital to your chosen path of the Rabbinate. We are blessed to have you as part of our community and as a rabbinic colleague. Rabbi Claudia Kreiman Temple Beth Zion 10

“You and I, We’ll Change the World”
אני ואתה נשנה את העולם Hebrew College students and alumni go out to change the world. They take with them the wisdom of our tradition over four millennia as distilled and applied by the faculty of the College in their teaching, advising and mentoring. They impact hundreds of individuals and families within and beyond the communities that they serve with qualities of compassion, integrity and commitment to their work. At a time when our world desperately needs new leadership and spiritual direction, they are uniquely equipped to help shape a changing world and their ultimate vocation is to bring all “to sit under their own vine or fig tree and that none shall make them afraid.” (Micah 4:4) Rebecca Weinstein, (candidate for rabbinic ordination `18) sits among the 7th grade girls at a Jewish day school. She is their role model, their tefila leader, their teacher. There is no more clear a vision of how young girls will aspire to prayer leadership than seeing their teacher daven with and among them, clad in her tallit and kippa and exuding her ruach and kavannah. Rebecca is a senior rabbinic student and Master’s in Jewish Education student at Hebrew College. Her impact is deep among her 7th grade students. Her tefila experience and education at Hebrew College has called her to understand the power of prayer. Her students will long remember her and long aspire to be like her. Julie Newman (candidate for cantorial ordination `17) sits strumming her guitar. The music of kabbalat Shabbat fills the sanctuary packed full on this Shabbat eve. She channels the exquisite melodies of rest and holiness that she has learned in the School of Jewish Music. The young children in the front row are wide-eyed with imagination and awe, their parents behind them relax into the tranquility that the music and ritual offers. The teens in the back row know this music from camp and sway in time. Julie lifts her community to a place where Shabbat rests upon them. Her kavannah – intention – seems to come effortlessly inspiring so many new families – interfaith, Jews of color, LGBTQ, mixed race to engage for the first time in her community. She knows however that her capacity to infuse her music with love and invitation comes from the rich and deep experience of her learning at Hebrew College. Roberta Bergstein (candidate for MJEd`19) sits in front of a circle of children in one of the largest congregational schools telling them a Torah ‘Godly Play’ story. She has learned as a student in the Shoolman School that Jewish Education can be more than just teaching facts and skills; it can be expanded to cultivate the spiritual development of children in her community. She now has a vision of what congregational education can really achieve for families and their children. She is keenly aware of how educating Jewish children involves a holistic approach to their spiritual growth. Her research study for her capstone project will document this impact on religious growth for the very first time in congregational education, as a model for what others can aspire to. They and their fellow students will all change the world… Rabbi Dr. Michael Shire Chief Academic Officer Dean, Shoolman Graduate School of Jewish Education and Jewish Studies Program 12

LEADERSHIP
“The Miller Center’s mission of training leaders for our pluralistic world has only become more critical as our country has become more divisive over this past year. I am so grateful to be able to support this Center, and to name it in Betty Ann’s memory. She would be so proud of the work being done by Or and his team.”
HEBREW COLLEGE IS MAKING AN IMPACT ON JEWISH LIFE AROUND THE WORLD In 5777, over 140 Rabbinical and School of Jewish Music Alumni, students and faculty led High Holy Day services around the world. The responses we received from those who attended their services have been heartwarming, spiritually uplifting and affirming of the work we do at Hebrew College.
“I wanted to tell you how much I was moved by your remarks on Rosh Hashanah. I will never hear the Shofar blowing in the same way.”
“You are an amazing person still can’t believe you rapped, but more than that, I love how you took culture, mixed it with a dash of politics and a dose of history, then mixed in race and immigration and served us up a plate of Rosh Hashanah…and my three teenage boys enjoyed it too!”
“This is one of the first times where, in the repetition of the vidui, I found myself toward the latter part of the day reading it with new meaning and interpretation of the lines, opening up new lessons and ways to understand and relate to what we’d missed the mark on, and the task before us.”
“In my 81 years, I have never enjoyed the High Holy Days as much as I did this year, thanks to our beloved student rabbi.”

April 27, 2017 Dear Friends, It’s a pleasure to congratulate Hebrew College for this wonderful gala honoring real heroes of Jewish life and continuity. The Grossman family has been a pillar of our community for generations. They have a deep understanding of the value of Jewish education and its impact on the future of our community. Susan Ain, a longtime leader of CJP, has supported every innovation in Jewish education and adult learning. Her commitment and philanthropic spirit are an inspiration to our community and beyond. With the creation of Me’ah, Hebrew College ignited a Renaissance of Jewish life in Boston. Adult learning, and particularly young adult learning, continues to be among our highest priorities. Hebrew College is constantly on the cutting edge of innovative learning and is an invaluable partner in making Jewish education accessible to adults of all ages and interests. Congratulations, again, to the distinguished honorees for this wonderful and truly deserved acknowledgment. May you continue to go from strength to strength. B’Shalom,

GATHERING THE PAST
Hebrew College, we bless the day you were born. 1921 Hebrew College was founded in Roxbury as the Hebrew Teachers College. 1952 Hebrew College moved to a classical beaux arts mansion in Brookline. 2002 Hebrew College moved into its first true campus in Newton Center. 2003 Hebrew College opened its Rabbinical School, the world’s first full-time pluralistic rabbinical program. 2004 Hebrew College launched its pluralistic Cantor-Educator Program, part of what is now the School of Jewish Music. 2012 Hebrew College secured the ownership of its campus.
STRENGTHENING THE FUTURE
The world could not exist without pluralism, innovation, and building bridges.
With pride, we celebrate Hebrew College’s 96-year history. Our collective commitment and generosity will secure the future. Ted Cutler, z“l former Hebrew College board chair and trustee emeritus, and recipient of an honoree degree in 2002, was a philanthropic visionary and role model. His transformative contributions to our community are legendary. Hebrew College, among a host of other worthy organizations, was blessed with his leadership and support over many years. Our sacred work in Jewish education has benefited enormously from Ted’s wisdom, commitment, generosity and passion. Although we are impoverished by his loss, we are enriched by his grand legacy. We mourn his loss and extend our deepest condolences to his entire family. May they be comforted among the other mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
