Do you remember your first job? I do... especially that feeling of “maturity”, thinking that having a job basically meant I was an adult. My first job was at an ice cream/sandwich shop and my best friend got a job at a pizza place just across the street. We thought we were so cool. We wore our uniforms proudly and felt pretty special. She and I were both humbled quickly as the bathroom cleaning and dishwashing duties settled in. Little did I know, the more glamorous “scooper” jobs went to the older kids with more seniority. Nonetheless, it was still a great experience. That is until a boy I had a crush on brought in a date and I had to wait on them. That was what did it for my young naïve self. Not the bathroom cleaning, not the dirty dishes, but having to wait on my crush in an unflattering uniform sent me over to the more fashionable industry of department store retail. Whether they are working in the food industry, retail or other public service job, Brad and I feel strongly that our kids should work in their teen years. Not so much that it interferes with their school work or other obligations (or social life, of course) but enough to learn how to manage their time, and learn some new skills, like working with the general public. Even if it is volunteer work, there are just some skills that are difficult to learn at home or in school. And, to be honest, my girls actually love it. What started as their summer jobs continued into the school year because they enjoy the experience so much. Plus, they like having their own spending money, and we are able to teach them how to save and make a budget. If your teen or tween is ready to hit the workforce this summer, but you aren’t sure what kind of job would be a good fit, check out Ways Kids Can Cashin This Summer - Money Making Ideas for Tweens & Teens, by Kimberly Blaker. Share this great list with your child so they can begin considering their options. Here’s a word of warning about your children getting jobs. If you are like me and used to being the “Master of the Schedule” that may change when your child is working. Before my kids had jobs I knew where and when everyone was and what days/times were open for things like family outings, visiting the grandparents, or going to a sibling’s show or game. Now that they are employed, that has really thrown my whole ‘Master Scheduler” job out of the window. Thankfully, Dr. Tanni Haas reminded me of a great solution to my problem in this month’s feature, 8 Great Mom Apps That Can Make Your Life a Little Bit Easier. Cozi is just one of the many helpful apps she mentions. Now we can share schedules, and even share a grocery list! No more getting texts right after I check out at the grocery store saying we need milk. If your kiddos are not quite old enough for a job, but looking for some fun things to do this summer, flip over to our annual 2022 VBS Guide. Vacation Bible School was always a favorite activity for my girls. Even if your children are a little too old for VBS, see if the church will allow them to volunteer their time. The month of May can be a super hectic time of year for all of us, but if you are a mom, try to take just a little time to relax and do something to celebrate the job you are doing. Whether it is a family day all together or some much needed time alone, May 8th is your day. You deserve it! Happy Mother’s Day and Congratulations to the Class of 2022!

3. Regret is a teaching emotion essential for the learning process. Regret helps us remember to think carefully before acting and to learn from our mistakes. Guilt and regret are important for encouraging positive behavior change, shame is not. As a parent, you eliminate shame by focusing on the behavior. Help your children see that their action was wrong without making them feel like they were wrong.

Are You a Lawn Mower Parent? “Helicopter parents” are becoming obsolete and replaced by “lawn mower parents”. This new breed of parenting style plows ahead of their children, arranging their lives in an attempt to eliminate sorrow, discomfort, and misfortune. “Lawn mower parents” are not preparing their child for the road, they are preparing the road for their child. This style of parenting is extremely detrimental for an infinite number of reasons, but my greatest concern is that this deficit of hardships will produce a generation of people who have never had the opportunity to become well rounded. Life is full of mishaps, unmet expectations, and things that go horribly wrong. Parents must stop believing that negative emotions and experiences are unhealthy for their children. In fact, research consistently reveals negative emotions and experiences are a vital part of the growth and development process. Let’s look at how to help your child handle the “negative emotions” of boredom, disappointment, regret, and discouragement. 1. Boredom is the birthplace of creativity and imagination. Children who are able to

Eastern Shore Parents I May 2022

accept boredom as a simple prompt to find things to do are forced to fully engage their creativity and imagination. Creativity helps develop innovation, but imagination is the most important building block for problem solving. We have to be able to imagine a solution before we can learn to create a plan of action. 2. Disappointment is the emotion we experience when do not meet our own expectations or the expectations of others. The ability to handle disappointment well is a skill that must be practiced. Use disappointments as opportunities for connection and communication through the development of expectation management. Help your child learn how to manage expectations by going over all the possible things that will take place and practice appropriate responses. To help your child manage his/her own expectations ask, “What are you imagining this to look like or what are you thinking about this?” You might be surprised to find out exactly how accurate or inaccurate his/her expectations are.

8

4. Discouragement takes place when we lose confidence. Help your child use the feeling of discouragement to determine any necessary changes and then help him/her try again. Teach your children this Thomas Edison quote, “Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up. I have not failed. I’ve just found ten thousand ways that won’t work.” It is not your job as a parent to eliminate difficulties. However, it is unfair to expect your child to embrace them with a positive attitude. All you can do is sit with them in their heartbreak. When they are ready, give them words to better understand their complex emotions and difficult experiences. If you do this, you will help your child become a resilient adult with the ability to keep going in the face adversity. This is how you prepare your child for the road.

Ballin on Belrose

We would like to invite the Gulf Coast community to come out and join us on Saturday, May 14 starting at 9:00 am for an event all can enjoy. This event was inspired by the 29029 Everesting Challenge. The 11-mile journey represents the distance traveled to reach the top of Mount Everest, a truly Baller achievement. Join us for the challenge or to cheer those striving for the Summit. The event will have plenty of entertainment and activities including DJs along the route, and at the post-event party where you will hear live music from Brandon Giles, grab a bit from the food trucks, and let your kids enjoy the jump house. At The Baller Dream Foundation, we strive to lift the spirits and ease the minds of our local Ballers, young warriors, and their families affected by cancer. Bring your family and friends to see who has what it takes to be a Baller and summit Everest. Let’s be the difference in someone’s life today. Are you up for the challenge? The Publix Grandman Triathlon

The Publix Grandman Triathlon: Presented by Altaworx is a shortdistanced “sprint” which features a one-third mile swim in Mobile Bay, an 18.6-mile bike through the rolling countryside of Fairhope, and a 3.1 mile run that does not skimp on hills. The event, whose proceeds benefit the work of Mobile Baykeeper, is open to individual racers and teams. The May 21 event, which begins at Fairhope Pier, is as much a celebration of community as it is a competition. Racers, volunteers, and spectators come together in high spirits, excited to be back at what’s become one of the most beloved triathlon events along the Gulf Coast. Fairhope Rotary Steak Cook-off

Since 2005, The Fairhope Rotary Steak Cook-off has brought to Fairhope a unique combination of searing Western BBQ-style steaks, Mardi Gras Carnival atmosphere and a chance to “see and be seen” at one of the most fun annual events hosted on the Eastern Shore. A whole year’s worth of planning comes together each May when teams of both professional chefs and local luminaries test their epicurean grilling skills on prime rib eye steaks. The event kicks off on Friday evening, May 13, when the gracious merchants along South Bancroft Street between the campus of Coastal Alabama Community College and adjacent to Fairhope’s French Quarter shutter their stores and relinquish the street to every manner of wood- and charcoal-fired grills, from custom BBQ trailers to Texas Smokers. Rules specify that only authentic wood grilling can be used, and as the coals are beginning to get just right, the festival attendees come through the gates and the band starts to get under way. It is like being invited to the most prestigious tailgate event and then getting to sample everyone’s steaks, while you enjoy their salads and baked potatoes, drink their beer or wine, and dance without having to worry that you are missing the game. Each year there are usually opportunities for V.I.P. sponsorships, raffles or silent auction events, dancing in the streets, and more. Advanced admission tickets are $75 in advance and may be purchased from any club member or at Piggly Wiggly in Fairhope or online at www.fairhopesteak.org. Tickets are also available at the door for $100. VIP tickets are available for $120. For more information visit www.fairhopesteak.org or visit our Facebook page.

Beach Emergencies! I had a mom come in the other day and ask me a really important question. “Why do babies eat sand?“ I sat there for a moment and finally had to admit that I didn’t know. I guess it will be one of those mysteries of the universe that might never be answered. But, she did have some beach questions I could answer, and we talked about some of the serious hazards at the beach. Besides the obvious sunscreen, shade for babies, keeping hydrated, etc., the most serious topics that came up were undertow and jellyfish. Today, we will talk about these topics and more as we explore (Jaws theme music playing)... BEACH EMERGENCIES! The most beautiful natural treasure we have here in Baldwin County is our beaches. However, they come with some dangers in the form of wildlife and the surf. First of all, it is really important to understand the flag system. Green is good! Yellow means some moderate surf and currents, so take precaution. Red and double red means absolutely no swimming. Finally, purple means dangerous wildlife present (ex. sharks, jellyfish, etc.) There are also a few areas that you cannot

swim, and that includes the pass between Little Lagoon and the gulf on West Beach. The undertow in the Gulf of Mexico is very strong and, unfortunately, is responsible for multiple fatalities per year. The undertow is worse in rough weather, and even the strongest swimmer is no match for it. Be sure to swim at a beach with a lifeguard present and stay away from piers and jetties. If you are caught in an undertow, as much as you want to, don’t panic. The most important step is to swim sideways out of the current and parallel to the beach. Once you feel you are not being pulled, then swim at an angle towards the beach, but away from the undertow. If you are unable to swim out of the current sideways, then relax and let the current take you out until it stops. Then swim back to shore. Be sure to wave your arms and attract attention to other beachers if you are unable to swim back in. If the undertow wasn’t enough for you, we have to consider the wildlife on the beach as well. Be sure to watch the local news and look for purple flags indicating recent issues with sharks and/or jellyfish. Luckily, shark attacks are rare, and the most common issue is jellyfish. If you or your child is stung by a

15

jellyfish, immediately wash off the area with saltwater, but do not use tap or pool water... it will make the sting worse. Liberally spray down the area with vinegar to neutralize the pain (oftentimes, lifeguards will have these at their chairs, but it’s a good idea to keep some in the beach bag). Then, apply shaving cream to the sting and shave off with either a razor or credit card. This sounds crazy, but it is an efficient way to remove any remaining tentacles from the body without you touching them with your hands. Spray the area again with the vinegar and then use ibuprofen or acetaminophen and some ice to help relieve symptoms. Most symptoms resolve in 24-48 hours, but if they don’t, seek help from a medical provider. Ah, the joys of summer. Baseball, swimming, going to the beach, getting stung by jellyfish... it’s all part of a week’s vacation, right? Be good and use sunscreen! Robert L. Rux, M.D. is a Board Certified Pediatrician at Magnolia Springs Pediatrics. Originally from Mobile, he attended medical school at The University of Alabama School of Medicine (UAB) and completed residency at The Children’s Hospital of Alabama (UAB). ence at camp led her to return to school to pursue her degree in Special Education. Currently, Kim teaches a Specialized Inclusion Class for children with special needs who need an IEP (individualized education program). Her students are ages three to five. “It is the biggest honor of all to be nominated by a parent, because they are the ones who need me as much as their child does,” Kim shared. “My goal is to get their child ready to join his/her peers in school and, most of all, to teach their child that they are important and can do anything they want to do... it just takes hard work. I am so lucky to have the best parents who are so supportive and helpful.” With Kim’s dedication, passion and her nearly 30 year commitment to teaching, we asked her to share advice with other teachers who might be reading. She said, “I guess the best advice is to remember why you went into education in the first place... the joy and wonder of a child learning!

“There are so many rewarding aspects to what I do,” said Kim Berry Williams, the Preschool Special Education Teacher at Rockwell Elementary School. The progress her students make once they are in the program really keeps her motivated. “When a child says their first word, takes their first step or learns to write their name,” Kim shared, “it never gets old! I love to see how much they grow throughout the school year!” Kim has been teaching for Baldwin County Schools for the last 28 years. She received both her Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in Early Childhood Special Education, with a minor in Child Development from the University of Alabama. “Originally, I wanted to be a doctor, specifically a pediatrician, but was discouraged by college advisors that I was not strong enough in math skills. I knew I wanted to work with children in a medical capacity, so I was searching for the perfect fit,” explains Kim. Her search led her to sign up to help at Camp ASCCA in Jackson Hole, Alabama. Mrs. Morrison’s 4th grade class started out watching videos on Marshmallow Farms, then Rio 2 where they discussed a rare bird, then went and searched for the elusive “Lirpaloof” bird! Autauga County Schools Bayside Academy’s Great Day of Service

On Wednesday, April 13, Bayside Academy held its annual Great Day of Service. On this day, students of all ages (from PK3 through 12th grade) took time to serve others. • PK3 through kindergarten students spent the day making egg carton wreaths for the Ronald McDonald House, building bird baths and bird nests for their feathered friends, and cleaning their playground. • 1st grade students partnered with their 8th grade buddies to assemble summer bags for children at Light of the Village before working to clean up May Day Park. • 2nd grade students created door hangers, placemats, and centerpieces for residents of Montrose Bay Health & Rehab. • 3rd grade students made birthday bags for Prodisee Pantry so that families have all needed supplies for a child’s birthday including cake mix, icing, candles, balloons, and more. • 4th grade students learned about food insecurity and packed snack bags for Rotary Youth Club participants. • 5th grade students served the city of Daphne by spearheading neighborhood cleaning projects including tidying the cemetery at the Daphne History Museum, removing weeds and vines on the May Day Park boardwalk, and picking up litter along the bay access points near Bayside’s campus (McMillan Bluff, May Day Park, and Belrose Avenue). • 6th grade students focused on global service and those who serve. They created paintings for residents of the William F. Green State Veterans Home, learned about the work of Konbit Haiti, and tie-dyed shirts for Konbit Haiti’s summer camp program. • 7th grade students were all about community helpers. They began the day with basic CPR/AED instruction, packed goodie bags for local first responders, and ended the day with a car wash with proceeds benefiting the Baldwin County Humane Society. • After hearing from Elizabeth Davis from Light of the Village to learn about the work they do locally, 8th grade students worked with their 1st grade buddies to assemble backpacks for children at Light of the Village. They also participated in basic CPR/AED instruction and cleaned up May Day Park. • 9th grade students initiated a campus “Glow Up” where they assisted Bayside’s maintenance staff with needed projects. • 10th grade boys spent the day working at Oaklawn Cemetery while small groups of girls worked at the Ronald McDonald House, the Baldwin County Humane Society, and Catholic Social Services. • 11th grade students spent the day serving at Prodisee Pantry and the Exceptional Foundation. • 12th grade students worked on three build sites for Habitat Humanity Pictured: Bayside Academy students during the Great Day of Service on April 13th

One pot wonders make weeknight dinners easy, not only to fix, but also to clean up! This month’s recipe is One Pot Cheesy Sausage Pasta brought to you by Leah Conaway-Washington and her family. The recipe, originally found on the popular social app Pinterest, catered to Leah’s southern inspired tastebuds. “As season ticket holders, I grew up going to New Orleans Saints football games and, in turn, enjoyed Louisiana cuisines,” Leah shared. “Now when visiting New Orleans, we love to take our boys to local restaurants, and pasta is an all-time family favorite!” Leah has been happily married to her husband Dominic for 19 years. He is a mortgage broker for Regions Bank. The couple met in college and together they have two boys: Brock Conaway (14) and Beau Cullen (12). “When I first started making this recipe, it was simply because of it being fast and that it included sausage and pasta, both my boys’ favorites,” said Leah. “Now my boys ask for it at least once a week, if not more.” Afternoons and evenings are usually filled with activities for the Washington boys. Brock plays both basketball and football for Fairhope High School. Beau plays flag football for Eastern Shore Flag Football league and enjoys being in the band and part of the basketball team at Fairhope East Elementary. As you can see, the family is often on the move, so eating out tends to happen more often than not. However, the prep on this recipe is fast and perfect for weeknight family dinners around the kitchen table! “DOUBLE EVERYTHING!” Leah shared. “Now that I double the recipe, leftovers may last for another day.” Eastern Shore Parents I May 2022

Outside of the day-today routines of the Washington family, they simply love to spend time together. The beach and trips to Disney are musts for this family of four! Leah shares that a tradition of their family is to catch a NBA game in the winter. They love to cheer on the New Orleans Pelicans. They also strive to attend at least one Golden State Warriors game to catch a glimpse of a family favorite, Steph Curry. Leah is an extremely dedicated 4th grade teacher at Fairhope East Elementary and is celebrating 20 years teaching this year. Her first job, and only other job before teaching, was a cheer instructor for UCA (Universal Cheerleaders Association). When Leah has a chance to unwind, she loves to shop, read and jazzercise! “I am constantly searching for recipes that are both easy and delicious. I’m not a big cook, so when I want to find a dish, it is important that I use the recipe/instructions to precision,” Leah said. “I’m not one to just add ‘a little bit of this or that.’ Recipes must have explicit instructions and be easy to follow.” Leah thinks Eastern Shore Parent’s readers should make this recipe because not only is it easy, but it’s delicious. Plus, it is so convenient that both the prep and cooking is from one pot! 46

One Pot Cheesy Sausage Pasta Ingredients: 1 pound beef sausage, smoked or turkey sausage 1 tbsp garlic (I use minced garlic) 1 cup onion 1/3 cup scallions 1 10-oz can of tomatoes (I use Rotel Original Diced Tomatoes and Green Chilies) 2 cups chicken broth 8 ounce pasta, dry (I use bowtie pasta) 1 tbsp olive oil, extra virgin 1 cup cheddar-jack cheese ½ cup milk or heavy cream (I use heavy whipping cream)

Instructions First, place oil in pot with chopped onions and the sausage. Add the minced garlic near the end once you see that the onions and sausage are almost finished cooking. Next, add the chicken broth, Rotel tomatoes, heavy whipping cream, and box of bow tie pasta to the pot and bring to a boil. Once the pasta is done, add ½ cup of shredded cheese to the pot and mix it all together. Top with the remaining cheese and scallions. Enjoy!

Teaching kids the value and rewards of hard work and earning their own money is an integral part of helping them develop into responsible adults. Through this, they gain self-esteem, learn the real value of a dollar, and develop better saving and spending habits. So share the list of jobs below with your pre-teens or teens for a variety of ways they can cash-in this summer. [or school-year] Eastern Shore Parents I May 2022

up the sun, get fit, and make spare cash than mowing lawns? Create some fliers, and be sure to mention you live in the neighborhood. Include your fees based on yard size. But try to keep the rates below the cost of professional services. Also, don’t forget to include your phone number. Then deliver the fliers to the homes in your neighborhood. You can lodge them between doorknobs or tuck them under doormats. Just don’t place anything in mailboxes because it’s illegal.

A little dirt never hurt – Garage cleaning is a big chore,

especially for the elderly, or anyone who just doesn’t have the time. So offer your services to relatives and neighbors. When you get a job, be thorough. Move everything into the driveway or yard before you begin. Remove cobwebs with a broom. Sweep ledges and the garage floor. Then hose the garage concrete (with permission) to loosen ground-in dirt. When it’s dry, neatly arrange everything back into the garage.

Young entrepreneur – Make the most of your neighbors’

garage sales by setting up a refreshment stand in your own front yard. You’ll need a small table and a handmade sign: “Cookies and Lemonade - 50 cents each.” Set out a pitcher of lemonade or Koolaid, disposable cups, and wrapped cookies. At the end of the sale, add up your profits, and divide them with your partners.

Fence finishing – Wood fencing requires ongoing mainte-

nance. So offer to assist your neighbors in sprucing up their yard by painting or staining their fences. The homeowner should supply the paint or stain and the necessary tools. Be sure to follow directions. Also, take your time and do a careful job.

Too old for toys and games? – If so, clean out those you’ve

task is sure to be a success. If you get the job, make sure your parents know the homeowner and approve of you going inside. Clean the interior of all windows, including doors. Also, don’t forget to open the windows and clean the ledges and tracks. Offer to do exterior windows if you’re tall enough to reach them without a ladder. Ask permission to hose them down to remove loose dirt. Then wash and dry them by hand.

Kiddie care – Are you old enough to stay home alone? If so,

you may be ready to babysit for other children. Spread the word through family, friends, and neighbors. Once you’ve gained experience, post fliers on the library, grocery, or laundromat bulletin boards. When babysitting, play games, and do activities with the kids. Avoid talking on the phone or watching TV. Parents love sitters

Life’s a zoo – Pet owners who don’t like to kennel their pets

within walking or biking distance. Attach a basket to your bike, or carry a backpack for easy transporting. If you have your driver’s license, offer to do more distant-runs.

Who’s walking who? – If you’re look-

ing for a new summer pal, why not make it man’s best friend? Pass out fliers to offer your pet walking services. Never run a dog unless the owner agrees. And if the dog starts panting or doesn’t want to run, never push it. Dogs can quickly overheat, which can kill them.

Make it shine – Round up your friends,

and get ready for some cold, wet fun! Hold a car wash in your driveway or a parking lot with permission from the property owner. Make a large colorful “Car Wash” sign. Include your cost (hint: set it no more than your local car wash charges). Have your supplies handy: a bucket of soapy water, rags or sponge, a hose, and plenty of dry towels.

Old McDonald had a farm - You

don’t have to be raised on a farm to make a good farmhand. Although it’s certainly a bonus. Visit area farms, and offer your help. Work may include laboring in fields to feeding and caring for livestock.

At your service – Offer home clean-

parents agree. Otherwise, make regular visits to the pet’s home. Be responsible, and do precisely as the pet owner instructs, for the safety of both you and the pet.

Weeds away – Are weeds taking over

your neighbors’ flowerbeds? Then offer to get them back into shape. Before you get started, find out which ones are plants versus flowers that haven’t yet bloomed. When in doubt, ask before you pull them. Wear gloves to protect your hands and hose the ground lightly to loosen roots. Pull weeds from rock beds, shrubbery, and cement cracks. Then dispose of them properly. Eastern Shore Parents I May 2022

Dollars for duds– Have you hit another

growth spurt? Ask your parents if you can consign your clothing and split the profits. Search online for local consignment shops by using “resale,” “used clothing,” or “consignment” in your search terms. Find out the shops’ policies. Then get your clothing ready. Wash and de-wrinkle, then hang or fold them neatly. Don’t forget shoes, jackets, and pajamas, too.

Errands for the elderly – Are there

handicapped, disabled, or elderly persons in your neighborhood? If so, they’re apt to need some help. Offer to run errands 50

ing services to your neighbors. Plan to do the following tasks, unless other arrangements are made: dust furniture and window ledges; vacuum carpet and stairs; sweep and mop tile, linoleum, and wooden floors; scour sinks, bathtubs, and toilets; shake out rugs; vacuum upholstered furniture; and make beds. Ask if straightening up is expected. Also, find out which cleaning products (supplied by the homeowner) to use on fixtures, appliances, and furniture to prevent damage.

Pool patrol – If sunbathing is your thing, then this is the job for you! Find out the age and certification requirements for lifeguard duty. Then apply at your community pool, YMCA, or nearby beach. While keeping an eye on swimmers and soaking up the sun, keep your skin safe by using a good sunscreen. ESP

The Internet is Not All Bad Wait for it... The internet is not all bad. Yes, even for your teens. I know you are thinking, wait a minute, you have told us ALL of the bad things. All of the disturbing things our kids have access to. How it can effect the rest of their lives. How it can shift their thought processes. How it can create irrevocable changes. So let’s reframe this for a minute. What if I told you that, yes, it absolutely can do all of those things, but in a positive way. I often feel like chicken little when I speak or write on this subject. Most days it does feel like the sky is falling, especially with so many kids floating freely through an unmonitored, unrestricted space. However, I think we can all agree there are beautiful stories to be found online. We see them everyday. But in the mess of it all, they sometimes get overlooked. The headline of “a teen helps an elderly stranger” never seems as interesting as the news that the sky is falling. But, the reality is, we can help gently move our children into this positive space by teaching them what to look for. I frequently ask kids during conferences if they are tired of hearing what they can NOT do online. I am always met with a resounding, YES! Then I ask if anyone ever takes the time to tell them what they CAN do. And I am told, NO. If our kids are going to be in this space, let’s show them the wonderful, beautiful, helpful side of online. I often use the analogy that our kids are a lot like puppies. A puppy will chew on your furniture or chew on a bone. They are going to chew, but we can decide what they get to chew on. Also, if we are being honest, kids have the attention span of a puppy. So while the bone is fun for a while, they will inevitably want to go back to the furniture. This is where we come in with constant guidance and re-direction. Eastern Shore Parents I May 2022

Case in point, my son and I were hanging on the couch the other day. We were watching his TikTok. Yes, he has TikTok. He turned 17 this month. There is a whole conversation around this that I will address another time, but he does have it. And I do monitor it. That day he was looking at random junk. Nothing “bad” mind you. Just junk. So I said to him we should spend some time looking at the colleges he is interested in and do it through his social media accounts. He looked at me and said, “Huh?” I reminded him that he can look at schools or baseball programs through Instagram, TikTok and even Snap Chat. I was met with another, “Huh?” Now, I realize that this story may not be painting my parenting/social media education skills in the best light. Shouldn’t he already know these things. I have said them. A lot. Does he even LIVE with me? He is incredibly smart, but this is a perfect example of how kids have to be reminded of the positive, uplifting, wonderful things they CAN do with their social media. He knew he could do it…just all of the other junk gets in the way. Today, and in the weeks to come, remind your kids what they CAN do. Show them how to access positive stories, how they can build their own business, how they can look up the college they have always wanted to attend, how they can use it to apply for their dream job. 52

If your children love to travel, show them all of the amazing places in the world they may visit. Show them apps that support their mental health either through meditation or simply moving their bodies. Find groups or activists that have the same goals and teach them how to get involved and use their voices in a positive manner that will create lasting change. And puppies. Teach them how to look up videos of all the puppies doing silly things. Because it brings joy. So let’s go back for a second to the beginning when we started this discussion and reframe those statements from a positive mindset. Did you know that social media can effect your children (positively) for the rest of their lives? It can (positively) shift their thought processes. It can create (positive) irrevocable change. We become what we focus on. Let’s help our kids focus on what will support them most. Sometimes it’s just a matter of finding them a new bone to chew.

My kids never went to an overnight camp. They were happier sleeping in their own beds, and with a flexible work schedule, I didn’t have to worry about daycare most days. However, I would not have been able to work had I not planned out activities way in advance. Luckily, there are dozens of local opportunities to keep the kids busy this summer without breaking the bank.

1. Spend the week at Grandma’s.

Every year my sister and I would spend a week with our grandparents. Twice we went on vacation with them, but most years we just hung out at their house. We played with our cousins, went shopping, played games and went to local events. It was nice to experience life with my grandparents in charge and it gave my parents the opportunity to go to work, worry free.

2. Attend Vacation Bible School.

VBS is held at many different churches every summer. This is an activity that your kids can participate in from preschool to high school and beyond. It is usually presented as a half day camp where kids do crafts, sing songs, watch skits and play games around a Bible theme. Many camps include a snack or lunch, too. The best part is that when the kids outgrow the activities, they can volunteer as a leader.

3. Attend a local high school camp. Most local high schools offer sports, music or science week long, half day camps. The camps are usually run by older students and/or the coaches and teachers

at the school. Camp is usually available to kids third grade through high school. It is fun for kids to participate in camps at the high school they will attend one day as the usually get a cool t-shirt as part of the camp.

of all ages. They offer both academic and sports camps over several weeks. Like the high school camps, they have activities for a large range of age groups and most camps run for a week or two.

4. Go on vacation.

If you kids are middle school age, they can volunteer some of their time by helping younger kids have fun. Libraries are looking for kids to help with summer reading program tables. Churches look for VBS helpers. Animal shelters look for dog walkers and people to entertain the cats. Food pantries are looking for stockers and nursing homes are always happy to see younger faces.

Most families take some type of vacation – even if it is a staycation. Many people allow their kids to have a friend come along on the trip so they have someone their own age. If you are lucky, that same friend will invite your child to go on vacation with their family.

5. Park district camps have something for everyone.

In addition to sports, they may have cooking camps, STEM camps, first aid camps and art camps. Many also offer an all day, day camp where campers go on local field trips to movies, pools, museums and zoos. The drop off and pick up is close to home. Choose one or more camps to suit your needs over the summer.

6. Create your own summer camps.

8. Make time to volunteer.

9. Take it day by day.

When planning your summer calendar, turn to websites like Groupon to find affordable entertainment. It is a great source to find the new activities in town for a discounted price. Most Groupons are good for a month or more so if you see an interesting activity, snatch it up and save it for those rainy days.

10. Have an unscheduled week.

Work with your neighbors and friends to arrange activities like those offered in park district day camps. Save a few vacation days to take your kids (and theirs) to nearby water parks, nature trails, etc. It is a great way to fill in the holes of your summer day care plans.

This is the week you can catch up on projects at home, shop for school supplies and clothes or create your own fun. This is also the week to schedule dentist appointments, school physicals and other things that need to be done over the summer. ESP

7. University camps.

Pam Molnar is a freelance writer and mother of three. She has discovered that the best summer plans are made early and hearing “I’m bored” from her kids is unavoidable.

If you live near a university, take advantage of their summer camps for kids

to include or exclude, special dietary needs, and cooking time. You can also see which ingredients are on sale in local stores, and watch more than 1000 step-by-step cooking videos with easy-to-follow instructions.

Squat or Not

Artkive

Available at: Apple Appstore; Google Play When travelling with kids, especially toddlers, there are few things more frustrating than not being able to find a public restroom when you really need one. SitOrSquat is a locationbased app that lets you to find bathrooms in your location. The app contains a user-generated list of more than 100,000 public restrooms throughout the U.S. You can get the travel time to the nearest bathroom, and search by specific features like changing tables or handicap accessible, and you are encouraged to post pictures and rate the restrooms as either “Sit” (good) or “Squat” (not good) to help other app users.

Available at: Apple Appstore; Google Play Like in most families, I imagine, my kid’s artwork is anywhere you look and don’t look: on the living room walls, in my bedroom, and stashed away in various cabinets and drawers. But there’s an alternative. Artkive is a great app for storing, sharing, and printing your kid’s artwork. You can search uploaded images by which of your kids created the piece, what grade they were in, and when it was made. You can also make high-quality, actual books to give as gifts to family and friends, and turn images into keepsake items like t-shirts, mugs, and cell phone covers.

Trekaroo Family Travel

Cozi Family Organizer

Available at: Apple Appstore I can’t count how many times on vacation with my 15-yearold son that he shouted in frustration: “Another museum?!” It doesn’t have to be that way. Trekaroo Family Travel, known informally as the TripAdvisor for kid-friendly travel, is an app that includes user-generated reviews of activities, hotels, and restaurants that kids will enjoy throughout the U.S. and Canada. The app includes a price slider that makes it easy to find things to do that are either low-cost or free, and offers suggestions for kid-friendly day trips.

Available at: Amazon Appstore; Apple Appstore; Google Play As the name implies, Cozi Family Organizer is an organizer. It has a shared calendar where you can track everyone’s schedules both individually and as a group, and a shared shopping list where you can see when items are added to the list or purchased by other family members in real-time. You can also use the app to send automated daily or weekly agenda emails to other family members, create specialized to-do lists, such as emergency supplies or vacation packaging, and organize receipts in one place that’s accessible to everybody.

Find My Kids

Available at: Amazon Appstore; Apple Appstore; Google Play One of the most stressful experiences is not knowing where your kids are at any given moment. Nowadays, almost all kids have cell phones, which helps minimize the stress. Find My Kids, a GPS-based location app, lets you to track your kids quickly and easily. Once registered, each family member appears as a unique icon on a navigational map so you know exactly where your kids are at all times. The app sends out automatic alerts when your kids arrive at school or go home, and monitors their cell phone battery levels letting you when they’re low so you can send out reminders to charge the phones.

7 Minute Workout

Available at: Apple Appstore; Google Play Let’s be honest: no matter how enjoyable it is, parenting is also exhausting. Physically exhausting. While it can be difficult to find time to work out, we all have seven minutes a day to spare. Wahoo 7 Minute Workout is one of the most popular short-interval fitness apps available. The routine is divided into 12 high-intensity exercises that last for 30 seconds, with 10 second of rest intervals. The exercises train your chest, abs, arms and legs through body weight training, push-ups, sit-ups, and squats. You don’t need any equipment so you can do the exercises wherever and whenever. ESP

Scholly

Available at: Amazon App; Apple Appstore; Google Play The time may be around the corner or far off into the future, but when it does arrive we’re all going to need it: money for college. Wouldn’t it be nice if at least some of that money is scholarships that you won’t have to pay back? Developed by a former Drexel University student by the name of Christopher Gray who amassed $1.3 million in scholarship funds, Scholly is a database with more than 20.000 scholarship opportunities across the U.S that is continuously expanded and updated. I Wouldn’t Go That Far

Q. Our son is in high school, and he has

a part-time job. He makes good grades, and we have always tried to teach him how to save and handle money according to your advice. He has even managed to set aside a few thousand dollars for college. My wife and I were talking the other night, and I brought up the idea of charging him a small amount for rent, maybe just $20 or $25 a month, to help him be even better prepared for the real world. What do you think about this?

A. I appreciate the fact that you’re looking for teachable moments. But making a high school kid pay rent? No, that’s a little over the top. Listen, you and your wife are already way ahead of a lot of parents. Teaching him financial responsibility and the importance of education are great things. It sounds like your son is

a bright, motivated young man, too. I talk to adults all the time who are decades older, but still don’t grasp the concepts of maturity and responsibility like this kid does already. With the kind of start you’re giving him, I think he’s going to grow up to be a very successful adult. Keep up the good work, and let that young man know how proud you both are of him!

How Much in Business Emergency Fund?

Q. I own a small business. How much should I have in a business emergency

fund when my annual sales are around $100,000? Currently, I have two months of expenses set aside.

A. Generally, I like the idea of

small businesses having about six months of expenses on hand. That kind of cushion usually eliminates the need for borrowing money. It also provides peace of mind. And if you’ve been an entrepreneur very long, you know that’s an invaluable thing. Having a personal emergency fund set aside is a little different than having one in place for your business. When it comes to personal finance, I recommend having three to six months of expenses set aside. The basic idea is the same, though. A fully-funded emergency fund gives you an option—besides debt—when unexpected things happen!
