Publisher’sNote “Mom, do the stores HAVE to put up Back to School before school starts?” my daughter asked as we walked into the store. I knew exactly how she felt. I didn’t love being overtaken by #2 pencils while shopping for sunscreen either, but I do know that we eventually have to face the reality that it’s that time. Instead of burying my head in the sugar white sand, I try to focus on the exciting aspects of starting a new school year. One thing that always helps boost a “Back to School” mood in my house is shopping for school supplies. There is just something about filling our cart with post-its and glue sticks that instantly puts a smile on my girls’ faces. We usually make a day of it, starting out with supplies, then heading out for shoes and anything else they need. The outing also gives the girls and me a chance to discuss things we are looking forward to in the new school year. Reconnecting with friends is top of the list, along with making new friends, meeting their teachers and, of course, involvement in extracurricular activities. Choosing and registering for extracurricular activities is a big part of the “Back to School” season, and Eastern Shore Parents wants to help you in that process. Every August we publish an extensive list of after school activities available in the area. With three children and ever changing interests I am grateful for the variety of opportunities offered. Whether your children love team sports, performing arts, scouting, fine arts or individual sports you are sure to find just what you are looking for in this year’s After School Activities Guide on page 60. Now that we have built up a little bit of excitement about going back to school, it’s time to do what we can to take some of the stress out of the school routine. One of my biggest stressors is dinner. Of course we eat dinner during the summer months, but it is a much more relaxed event. During the school year, I feel dinner needs to be served at a specific time in order to make the rest of the evening flow smoothly. If dinner is not served at the right time then baths aren’t taken at the right time, and it’s all down hill from there. Fortunately Christa Melnyk Hines has some great tips I am going to use in her article, 15 Genius Tips for Back to School, on page 52. She not only provides solutions to tackle the dinner planning issue, but also touches on other stressors parents may face this time of year. I, for one, am making a pledge to try and do a better job of planning and prepping my meals in advance to reduce dinnertime stress and enjoy quality time with my family. As if planning evening meals is not stressful enough, many families also experience picky eaters. When my children were young I fed them everything we ate, including turnip greens, sweet potatoes, peas, foods mixed together with “green things” in it...you name it! Then somewhere down the line they decided they no longer loved some of their childhood favorites. If you have a picky eater in your home, you may find some helpful pointers in Diversifying the Plate of a Picky Eater, on page 48. Whether you are spending these last few of weeks of summer relaxing on the beach, registering for activities, or making menu plans, we hope this issue of Eastern Shore Parents helps you not only get ready, but also get excited for a wonderful school year for your entire family!

Don’t Rush for Evaluation in Happy Child Q: Our 4-year-old prefers solitary play over play with other children. It’s been this way from early on when I began arranging play dates for him. When those really didn’t work, I enrolled him in pre-school but that didn’t help either. If firmly instructed to do so, he will join in and “play” with other children. I put the word in quotes because he doesn’t seem to really connect. He’s very imaginative and will spend hours in his room playing quietly on his own or even boisterously with various imaginary friends. At both home and school, he’s polite, obedient and sometimes can be very talkative with his older siblings or us. Everyone agrees that he seems happy and content. He’s in preK now and his teacher tells us he’s at least a year ahead of most of the kids in his class. Nonetheless, his school counselor called us in the other day and suggested he might have a mild form of autism—specifically, Asperger’s Disorder. Do you think we should have him evaluated?
A: Obviously, your son has more going for him than against him, which is my

primary reason for recommending against an evaluation—for the present, at least. Based on your description, it sounds to me as though your son is on the cusp of qualifying for a diagnosis of Asperger’s Disorder. Whether that occurred would depend on how liberally the therapist
in question interpreted the diagnostic criteria. In my estimation, those criteria (symptoms) should always be considered in light of the “big picture” which in this case includes the fact that your son is a happy, content, intelligent, well-behaved and imaginative little fellow who interacts

well with family members—the people with whom he is most familiar. That description is more significant than his social immaturity. We seem, collectively, to have forgotten that children are capable of being odd little creatures—some more than others. Most children eventually outgrow their oddness or learn the advisability of controlling it. For that reason, I’d hold off, for the time being, on an evaluation. At age four, the fact that a child is lagging in one developmental area is, in and of itself, no cause for alarm. One thing is certain: If people treat a child as if he has something wrong with him, the child is likely to become convinced there is something wrong with him and begin acting accordingly. Your son is a smart, imaginative, happy little camper who at this early point in his life doesn’t socialize well with other children. Given the positives, I am inclined to think that the best therapy is patient guidance from the people who love him the most. Youth Auditions for “Peter Pan Jr.”
Eastern Shore Repertory Theatre (ESRT) announces auditions for “Peter Pan Jr.”, to be performed at the Fairhope Civic Center November 3-5, 2017. Auditions for 3rd graders through high school seniors will be held Monday, August 14 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Tuesday, August 15 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Eastern Shore Repertory Theatre Studio located in the Dance Arts South building at 251 Greeno Road South in Fairhope. No experience or preparation is necessary. Audition on either Monday or Tuesday, but not both. ESRT is offering a “Peter Pan, Jr.” dance workshop for those wishing to learn some of the audition choreography in advance. The dance workshop is not required to audition, and no reservations are necessary. The workshop will be held on Saturday, August 12 from 1-2:30 p.m. at the ESRT Studio. Cost is $20 per student. Center Stage Performance announces auditions for their fall musical theater productions of Disney’s “The Lion King Experience, Jr.” and “Seussical Kids.” Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat and all of your favorite Dr. Seuss characters spring to life on stage in Seussical Kids, a fantastical musical extravaganza. Thomas Hospital Auxiliary Awards Health Career Scholarships to Area Students
The Thomas Hospital Auxiliary is pleased to award $9,000 in health career scholarships to six Baldwin County residents. Each student will receive a scholarship valued at $1,500. Jennifer Campbell of Silverhill is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing at the University of Mobile, and Kirsten Martinez of Spanish Fort is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in nursing at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Ryan Summerford of Fairhope is pursuing a master’s degree in health administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and Amy Taylor of Daphne is pursuing a bachelor of health sciences at the University of South Alabama. Sheau Lam of Daphne and Courtney Schmerbauch of Spanish Fort are pursuing bachelor’s degrees in nursing at the University of South Alabama. These students were chosen based on their academic excellence, extra-curricular activities and dedication to their goals. Thomas Hospital Auxiliary Health Career Scholarship Committee Chair Rusty Downey and Co-Chair Bob Holmes interviewed and selected this year’s recipients. Students who are residents of Baldwin County and have been accepted into a healthcare program at an accredited college or university may apply for the Thomas Hospital Auxiliary Health Career Scholarship. Applications are available in February and due in May. The scholarships are funded by several fundraisers including the sale of used books, which are donated and sold in the Thomas Hospital Gift Shop in Fairhope and Thomas Medical Center Snack Shop in Daphne. Donations of used books in good condition are appreciated and accepted at both locations. Jensen’s Heart of Gold Announces Super Slugger Softball Tournament for Adults
Jensen's Heart of Gold Foundation has a mission to support local Baldwin County Families that have a child with cancer. They are excited to announce the 7th Annual Super Slugger Softball Tournament - an adult co-ed, two day tournament held at the Gulf Shores SportsPlex on September 9th & 10th (Saturday & Sunday). Averaging over 30 teams from at least 6 different states, this two-day adult softball tournament is THE cornerstone of the Heart of Gold Foundation! The foundation is now registering for the tournament. Each team consists of 10-12 players. Each team must have male to female ratio of 5/5, 6/6, 6/4, or 7/5. Teams who register and pay by August 18 will receive 12 free Super Slugger Dri-Fit jerseys for their team! Teams may register through September 5 but must provide their own jerseys. Bring Girls on the Run to Your School!
Girls on the Run South Alabama is now accepting new sites in Mobile and Baldwin counties for the fall 2017 season. Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based positive youth development program for girls in 3rd – 5th grade. Girls on the Run is dedicated to creating a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams. Through the 11-week program girls learn their worth comes from within, that healthy relationships and healthy habits matter and that they can be a force for good in their community through a fun, experience-based curriculum that creatively integrates running. Meeting twice a week in small teams, we teach girls life skills through engaging lessons and fun activities. The curriculum is taught by certified Girls on the Run coaches. During the program, each team also creates and executes a local community service project to demonstrate the strength that comes from helping others. At each season's conclusion, the girls and their running buddies complete a celebratory 5k running event. Girls on the Run helps empower girls to be the author of their own story and define the future on their terms. The Wharf Uncorked Announces Culinary Lineup
The 4th Annual Wharf Uncorked Food & Wine Festival, set for Sept. 14-16, will feature more than 20 chefs and restaurants from the Gulf Coast and beyond serving up samples of their signature dishes, demonstrating their skills and competing for the ultimate prize. • Thursday, Sept. 14: VIP Kickoff + Chef Showdown — The three-day experience will begin at 4720 Main Street from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Reigning showdown champion Brody Olive will be joined by two mystery chefs for this year’s competition to create the best dish with Alabama Gulf Seafood fueled with culinary challenges and roadblocks. There will be select vendor wine and spirits tasting, an auction preview, an open bar, food samples and giveaways. Individual tickets are $35. Combo tickets for the Chef Showdown and Grand Tasting are $80. Mission Nutrition Opens at the Exploreum Science Center
After more than a year of planning, the Exploreum Science Center opened the new Mission Nutrition interactive exhibit area in the My BodyWorks Gallery. The renovation features five Superfood Heroes that come alive through Augmented Reality technology; a racing video game, Fuel Up, where visitors race through breakfast, lunch, and dinner, trying to avoid unhealthy foods; the Now You’re Cooking touch screen interactive exhibit that lets visitors choose between ingredients to create healthier versions of traditional Southern dishes; and the You Are What You Eat interactive game featured on an eight- foot screen. “This renovation hits the mark on so many levels,” said Jan McKay, the Exploreum’s Executive Director. “The interactive media uses the most recent technology available, the colors and design are amazing and exciting, there is something for everyone, the games are fun, and the educational content is strong. Is That Stick Moving? A few years ago, my family and I were camping at the Gulf State Park. My oldest son Adler was on a hike with his buddies near the camp site and was crossing a log over a small creek. He, of course, fell in and lost his shoes to the suction effect in the mud in the bottom of the creek. After climbing out, he wasn’t worried about the mud on his legs or the mud on his clothes, but was upset about losing his shoes. As a daddy, my job was to climb in the stagnant, wonderfully fragrant creek to dig out his shoes. The whole time I was reaching my hand in the water and moving sticks, debris and other unknown objects, I kept thinking back to my medical training in Birmingham and wondering how quickly I could get to the ER if I got a snake bite. Luckily, snake bites are not very common; however, they potentially are a medical emergency. Today, we will address the common snakes in Alabama, how to tell if they are poisonous or not, and what to do (and what not to do) if you or your child gets bitten! First, let’s discuss the snakes we have here in the southern half of the state. In terms of the ones you need to really know, the poisonous ones are coral snakes, copperheads, cottonmouths, and of course the various

species of rattlesnakes. So, how do you know what the snake is, and if you were bitten, should you freak out? First, the coral snake—it is black with red and yellow stripes and has the most toxic venom in North America. Luckily, they are fairly rare and nonaggressive. But, there is a nonvenomous snake with a similar color pattern. Just remember “Red on yellow will kill a fellow, but red on black won’t hurt Jack.” However, I would just stay away. Next, we group the cottonmouths, copperheads, and rattlesnakes together because of their characteristic triangular or arrow shaped head, the cat-like pupil or eye slit, and a small opening between the eyes and nostrils called the pit. Now, if you are close enough to see these findings, you might as well be headed to the hospital. But, what happens if you get bitten and don’t see the culprit? Look at the bite itself. A poisonous bite typically has two single fang marks, while a non-poisonous bite has a semi-circle pattern that looks like a large smile. So, you were bitten. What next? As opposed to old Western movies and “what you heard from that dude,” it is not recommended to cut the bite and suck out the poison or take off your belt and apply a tourniquet around

the limb. These things don’t remove or delay spread of poison. They only do one thing, and that is waste time while you should have been getting to the ER. So, stay calm, take a picture or remember what the snake looks like and go! There, the ER can give supportive care, fluids, medication and anti-venom if need be to help treat symptoms like low blood pressure and shock. Another issue is snake bites and pets. My nurse recently found their 3 year old healthy boxer dead outside. The only thing they found was a red swollen area near his upper lip. With all of the recent flooding and water everywhere, snakes have moved closer to your house. So keep an eye open for your kids and your pets. Did you know that most snake bites in kids occur when they try to handle a snake or pick one up that they think is dead! So, lesson one, don’t touch a snake. Lesson two, remember what poisonous snakes look like. Step three, stay calm and get to the nearest ER of you are bitten. Be sure to check resources at aap.org and jama.org; and in case you were wondering, I found both shoes! Robert L. Rux, M.D. is a Board Certified Pediatrician at Magnolia Springs Pediatrics. Fairhope Intermediate Students Get Break from Indoor Classroom
Fairhope Intermediate School inspires learning outside the walls of the classroom. This outdoor nature area was built by volunteers in 2000 and provides the perfect area for reading, writing, researching and observing. The outdoor nature center is a 2-3 acre emergent wetland area surrounded by bottom-land hardwoods. Native and invasive plant species provide a perfect environment for all creatures big and small! Autism Awareness at Daphne East
Project REACH at Daphne East hosted Autism Awareness Month this past spring. They planned several events for the entire month to raise autism awareness and acceptance at Daphne East and in the community. For each event planned, they had the assistance and support of various clubs within the school such as the Peer Helpers, the TV Production Club, and the C.A.R.E Club. We also had the assistance and support of our PTO, administration, office staff, and businesses around the community such as Janino’s Pizza and Frios Pops. Daphne East Elementary had two events that ran the entire month of April, as well as, two events one-day events.. Pictured here are the 4th-6th graders who posed in the shape of the Autism Awareness Ribbon at Trione Park. PTO secured a drone, which took awesome pictures and a few videos. It turned out amazing!

SFEEF Supports Spanish Fort Public School Students
The Spanish Fort Education Enrichment Foundation (SFEEF), founded in 2002, is a 501(c) 3 organization whose mission is to inspire the power of community to enrich and support education for all Spanish Fort public school children. SFEEF’s success is a result of the many contributions by sponsors & community volunteers who have dedicated their time and money to support SFEEF fundraising efforts over the years. Our major sponsors, Chick-fil-a Spanish Fort, Trattoria Pizza and Italian Restaurant and First Community Bank, made a significant impact during the 2016-17 school year with their commitment to Spanish Fort schools. Over the past 15 years, SFEEF has contributed over $500,000 to Spanish Fort schools. Fairhope National All-Star Baseball Team Wins Dixie Youth Alabama Championship
Congratulations to the Fairhope National All-Star Baseball Team, who won the 2017 Dixie Youth Alabama Championship (Peanut -Machine Pitch) on July 10. Fairhope had to navigate a tough bracket and ultimately defeated Valley in the Championship game. The team will represent the state of Alabama in the Dixie Youth World Series, which will be held in Cleveland, MS. These Fairhope All-Stars are special and we are so proud of each of their hard work, determination, sportsmanship, and selfless attitudes. Gulf Shores Youth Track Club Members Qualify for National Meet at University of Kansas The Gulf Shores USATF Youth Track Club recently competed in the USATF Region 6 Competition at Alabama A & M. The region consisted of club teams form Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Tennessee. The qualifiers for the USATF national meet at the University of Kansas are: Morgan McCartney High Jump 1st place (regional champion) 12U and Pentathlon 3rd place 12U (80m hurdles, shot put, long jump, high jump, and 800m run); Marlie McCartney high jump 4th place 10U; Catie Sanders 4th place high jump 12U; Kenny Sanders 5th place shot put 8U; Trinity Morgan 3rd place high jump 18U. BCHS Students Attend Alabama Boys State / Girls State Programs in Tuscaloosa
Three Baldwin County High School students recently spent a week attending the Alabama Boys State and Alabama Girls State programs, both held on the campus of the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Boys State is sponsored by the American Legion and participants are chosen from the around the state based on their demonstration of hard work, strong morals and motivation in school and community activities. Boys State delegates Matthew Covington and Matthew Campbell were sponsored by American Legion Post 188 in Bay Minette. Throughout the week, participants learned about leadership, government and civic processes. Activities included mock elections and community service. The Delegates could join interest groups that focused on their individual areas of interest such as law school, fire college, law enforcement academy, aerospace academy, lobbyists, city government, county government, constitutional convention, engineer/computer academy, and environmental interest group. Alabama Girls State is sponsored by the American Legion Auxiliary. The Girls State delegate is Erin Emmons. The delegates, chosen from every corner of Alabama, spent a week learning how government works. They divided up into cities and political parties, held elections and learned how laws are made and cities, counties and states are governed. In addition, the delegate had the opportunity to hear from speakers and leaders in government and business and also took part in community service projects. Gov. Kay Ivey welcomed both groups and Bay Minette’s own Lyn Stuart, Chief Justice of the Alabama Supreme Court, spoke with delegates at Girls State. CBEE Serves as Liaison Between Businesses and Local Schools
Coastal Baldwin Educational Enrichment Foundation (CBEE) assists in providing superior educational opportunities in the Gulf Shores and Orange Beach public schools. CBEE serves as a liaison between local businesses and the school system. If there is a need within one of the island schools, CBEE seeks to provide a partnership within the community that may be able to assist. Local businesses also utilize CBEE to determine where their business can best serve within the school system. CBEE Accomplishments 2016-2017: • Facilitate and award ten $1,000 scholarships to GSHS seniors • Facilitate the scholarship process for eight local businesses • Fund teacher requests/grants for continuing education and supplies • Fund student academic activities • Committee members offer countless hours of community service. FEEF Supports Fairhope Middle School Solar Eclipse Community Event Day
Thanks to the generosity of the local community, the Fairhope Educational Enrichment Foundation (FEEF) has the ability to offer funding throughout the year to special teacher inspired projects in the Fairhope schools. In the spring, Fairhope Middle School (FMS) science teacher, Ms. Janice Kinard, submitted a request to FEEF’s Educational Excellence committee, requesting funding for a full school integrated project focusing on the Solar Eclipse that will take place on the first day of school, August 21. Ms. Kinard was passionate about her students being able to experience this phenomenal event. “Students will be talking about this event for many days to come.” Ms. Kinard said. “They will not be just reading about it, or watching it on TV, but actually be a part of it!” Kinard’s excitement was contagious, and her request for funding was approved by FEEF based on her innovative approach of incorporating the solar eclipse experience into multiple areas of study throughout the school. Ms. Kinard, with the support of FEEF, has organized a Solar Eclipse Community Event Day. The entire school body, equipped with special solar protective glasses and additional enhancing scientific equipment, will be outside to experience this remarkable occurrence. There will be a variety of solar activities for students, teachers and guests. In the days following the eclipse, art students will draw it, English students will write about it, math students will work distance and space problems, science students will explore solar and lunar eclipses, and students will use technology to report the event on the FMS station. FEEF is honored to be a part of funding this project and so many others that support teachers like Ms. Kinard in providing educational opportunities to our local students. Baldwin County Students Participate in Economic And Community Development Program At Huntingdon College
Three Baldwin County students were part of 25 rising high school seniors who participated in the first annual Huntingdon College Economic and Community Development Scholars Program earlier this month. Planned in partnership with and sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce Association of Alabama, the Economic Development Association of Alabama, and the Alabama Department of Commerce, ECDS introduced young citizens who are poised to begin their professional journeys to the importance of economic and community development. Representing Baldwin County were Tiffany Johnson of Bay Minette, Brieanna Michanowicz of Lillian, and Brett Duarard of Lillian. The students toured local businesses and Alabama government offices, met with Alabama Governor Kay Ivey and other state officials, heard from professionals seasoned in the processes of economic and community development, and participated in a two-day economic development simulation. Participants "graduated" from the program wearing hard hats for ground-breaking and ribbon-cutting simulations. "We were excited to have 25 of Alabama's brightest lights on campus," said Huntingdon senior vice president Anthony Leigh, an architect of the program. "These students have returned to their communities enlightened about what economic and community developers do, and we hope that knowledge has given them an appreciation for the work of growing and bettering our communities and our state."

Bay Minette Middle School Cheerleaders Earn Gold Ribbons at Camp
Bay Minette Middle School cheer squad had a successful Universal Cheerleader Association camp experience. The team earned gold ribbons (superior) for sideline routine, cheer, and extreme dance routine. Six squad members were also selected as All-Americans including Elizabeth Howard, Emily Scarborough, Carlee Scott, Christin Watson, Sarah Jones, and Hannah Morris. BCHS Tigers Pitch in on Habitat for Humanity Build in Bay Minette
Members of the BCHS Tiger offensive and defensive line put in a little muscle to a special project going on in Bay Minette. The football players joined other volunteers in laying a yard full of sod at the Habitat for Humanity home currently under construction on Townsend Avenue. The home is expected to be completed by the end of the month for new homeowner, Kassie Betts and her children. Hundreds of volunteers have spent the past few months working on the Habitat home and the Betts family has been working right alongside them. Habitat homeowners pay a 30-year interest-free mortgage, making it affordable and manageable. They are also expected to invest
400 hours of "sweat equity" in the program by assisting with other builds, their own build, and attending financial education classes, monthly budgeting meetings and homeowner preparation classes. Prior to construction, Kassie had already completed hundreds of hours of service on other projects and had attended Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University. She accomplished all this while working two jobs to support her family. Since its inception, Habitat for Humanity has completed more than 100 homes in Baldwin County and repaired numerous homes for veterans and other residents. Daphne East Elementary Collects Change for Autism Daphne East Elementary school's Project REACH hosted “Change for Autism" during their Autism Awareness Month this past spring. Each class in the school competed against one another to raise the most money for Autism Speaks, an advocacy and support organization dedicated to increasing understanding and acceptance of autism and advancing research to meet the needs of those with autism and their families. Each week the change collected was counted. Thankfully, the PTO provided a coin counter to speed the process, because the students were bringing in bags and bags of change! The school raised $3, 073.52. Ms. Tuveson’s second grade class was the first place winners. Her class raised $245.14. Ms. Tuveson’s class won a pizza party. Janino’s in Daphne donated the pizza. Second place went to Ms. Weinacker’s first grade class. They raised $184.18. Ms. Weinacker’s class won free Rita’s Ice courtesy of our PTO. Ms. Mosley’s class won third place raising $171.08. They won a free out-of-uniform day. The Peer Helpers made our posters to put around the school. Classroom teachers and students brought in milk jugs to collect change. The paraprofessionals helped wash the jugs. The Peer Helpers and paraprofessionals put labels on the milk jugs. Students in Project REACH, the paraprofessionals, C.A.R.E Club, and the Peer Helpers delivered the milk jugs to each classroom. Each week they picked up the milk jugs for the change to be counted and redelivered to each class. The TV Production Club announced the top three winners with their totals each week. Everyone in the school was involved!

Sea Cadets Learn Land Navigation Techniques
In the month of June, Sea Cadets of Dunlap Division drilled at the USCG ATC where they had the honor of hosting Army Staff Sergeant Joel Rogers. SSG Rogers taught the cadets proper techniques for land navigation. They learned how to pinpoint their exact location, read all aspects of a map, and how to use a compass. Learning land navigation is a very important tool to have as a Sea Cadet and may come in useful for the rest of their lives. Dunlap Division looks forward to practicing their new skill. Looking forward, we are excited to be taking a firearm safety course in July, learning how to properly handle a weapon, and in August having our annual camp out where we will divide the cadets into teams and they will compete in several games against each other. Naval Sea Cadets is designed for young men and women ages ten to high school graduation who are interested in expanding their knowledge on our military. The sea cadets instill patriotism and leadership skills. Dunlap division meets one weekend a month at the U.S. Coast Guard Aviation Center in Mobile. The cadets are under no obligation to join the military; however, if they do decide to enlist they are usually eligible to enlist at a higher pay grade. The program does offer ROTC scholarships. Daphne East Holds Trivia Contest for Autism Awareness Month
Project REACH at Daphne East hosted Autism Awareness Month this past spring. One of the activities was our Autism Awareness Trivia. During our morning TV announcements on Mondays and Wednesdays, the TV Production Club read a trivia question related to facts about autism. The questions were intended to provide students, teachers, and families the opportunity to research, explore, and discuss autism as a group to raise awareness and acceptance. Some teachers used the trivia questions as a lesson or as research activities in their classes. Kindergarten and first grade were given a sheet of paper with multiple-choice answers. The questions remained on our TV screens throughout the school day in the classrooms and the hallways. This allowed visitors and parents to see the questions as they entered the building. Once the trivia question was presented during morning announcements, the students had two/three days to turn his or her answers into our Autism Trivia Box. This gave teachers the option to use the questions as homework to promote discussions at home. The last question was a favorite. It asked students to write one thing they had learned during the month. The responses were amazing and thoughtful, such as “I should try to be a friend to everyone,” or “people with autism have strengths just like me.” Two correct responses were pulled for each trivia question. Frios Pops in Daphne donated Free Frios Pops gift certificates that were cutely wrapped, to give the winners. It was a great incentive! We had a trivia winner represent every grade level! Project Reach students gave out the gift certificates and had their picture taken in front of the Project REACH classroom door, which says, “Growing our Awareness.”

SEEDS Supports Daphne Schools
SEEDS: Supporting Educational Excellence in Daphne Schools is a non-profit education foundation, which has been serving the Daphne schools for 14 years. SEEDS continues to take the lead in educational support in our community, continuing to create a love of lifelong learning, being advocates for educational improvements and advancing educational enrichment. SEEDS supports programs such as the International Baccalaureate Program, and The Leader in Me, while supporting teachers and students with grants and classroom instructional materials that provide enrichment and diverse educational experiences. SEEDS educational enrichment programs included Reading Ready Intervention Kits, to address reading proficiency: IXL Math program, used to introducing deeply engaging math concepts, from algebra to analytics, and Ozbot, a STEM related program to provide learning opportunities in robot computer coding and programing at elementary levels. SEEDS also assisted in purchasing interactive teaching equipment, used to teach in auditory, visual and kinesthetic learning. SEEDS provided students in middle school age groups music class related learning materials, transportation, and equipment. SEEDS provided funds for PEER Helper teacher training and Science class instructional support for innovative and creative teaching techniques. SEEDS sponsors writing camps for incoming Daphne High School Freshmen and Sophomores, to enhance writing skills, music learning material and technology equipment, a projector for the Theater Department and assisted in building a state of the art recording studio for students to use in many course objectives. SEEDS provides instructional materials, classroom equipment and furniture items for use in community areas, with grants providing support that touch the day to day education of all students in each of the 5 Daphne public schools. Our mission at SEEDS has remained the same: To be advocates for students, to provide enrichment and be visible in our community, supporting education: being good stewards that empower Daphne students with the opportunity to develop their potential, achieve education goals, and become responsible, caring members of the Daphne community. SEEDS is only able to continue in our important work in Daphne schools, with help and support from the City of Daphne, and the generous support of our sponsors and donors. SEEDS hosts fundraisers throughout the year, and SEEDS Classic Rock 5K &1 Mile Fun Run, each March, in old town Daphne. In November SEEDS will host a Golf Tournament at a local golf course. FEEF Beginning 21st Year of Supporting Arts and Sciences in Fairhope Schools
Now beginning its 21st year, the Fairhope Educational Enrichment Foundation (FEEF), promotes innovative and creative learning for Fairhope public school students. The Pelican’s Nest Science Lab, FEEF’s signature project, continues to offer marine biology education for Baldwin County students in grades K-5. With the community’s generous donations, FEEF was also instrumental in the construction of Fairhope High School’s Black Box Theatre, a performing arts space giving high schools students a place to hone their acting skills or perform a jazz ensemble. The theatre also provides a place for the Alabama Shakespeare Festival (ASF) to bring its artist in residence program to Fairhope. In partnership with FEEF, ASF plays to more than 1,200 Baldwin County public school students annually and will return to the stage in March 2018. The majority of FEEF’s programs are funded through support from local individuals and corporations. “FEEF is a non-profit organization full of volunteers committed to enriching educational opportunities for Fairhope public school children,” said FEEF President Amy Foley. “We are committed to continuing our partnership with Fairhope educators and hope that the entire community will join our efforts. FEEF supporters understand excellent schools add to the quality of life in our community.” On any given day in Fairhope’s five schools, visitors might find engineering students building a moon buggy, future fashion designers creating garments from industrial materials, middle school teens strumming guitars, goggle-clad young scientists dissecting starfish, or Fairhope’s youngest students applying lines, angles, and circles in an art class. These programs are just a few examples of how FEEF, partners with the community, to provide Fairhope students innovative and engaging programs in Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math. FEEF holds two annual community-wide fundraisers each year, Phantasy and its Annual Mayor’s Golf Tournament, which help the 20-member FEEF Board of Directors engage the community and gather the dollars necessary to support these educational programs. FEEF’s Phantasy is an annual community-wide event held each fall in downtown Fairhope. This year the event committee will present “Phantasy – An Evening in the Big Easy” on October 7, 2017. The night will include The Blackwater Brass funk jazz band, Keys 2 the City dueling pianos, southern Cajun cuisine and special features from local art, music and theatre students. Tickets will go on sale August 21, at $100 per ticket and sponsorship opportunities are available for businesses and individuals. FEEF’s Annual Mayor’s Golf Tournament will be held in spring 2018 at Quail Creek Golf Course and promises to continue the tradition of a great day of golf. “Between An Evening in the Big Easy and a long tradition on the green, we guarantee both Phantasy and Golf will offer entertaining opportunities for parents, teachers, and businesses to support our local schools,” Foley said. Since 2003, the South Baldwin Chamber Foundation (SBCF) has made an impact on the communities of Foley, Lillian, Elberta, Magnolia Springs, Bon Secour and Summerdale. NBCEE Supports North Baldwin Schools
In 2008, a small group of dedicated individuals with a huge passion for education formed an organization called the North Baldwin Coalition for Excellence in Education (also known as NBCEE) as a way to support the schools in north Baldwin County and to supplement the programs offered by the school system. The organization and the work continues today with the same passion for education and a mission which it’s had from the very start - “to enhance the educational experience of all the students in the Bay Minette feeder pattern by providing financial support and other resources to supplement district wide programs.” NBCEE accomplishes this mission through three core focus areas – Teacher Grants, Summer Enrichment Camps, and Teacher of the Year recognitions. Since 2008, the Teacher Grant program has provided more than $82,000 to local teachers for a wide variety of creative and innovative classroom and school projects. And it is made possible because of a longstanding, truly collaborative relationship with our community organizations of Heritage Junior Women’s Club and Bay Minette Rotary Club, and our community members. These two organizations organize a popular annual community event, the Chilly Run/Chili Cookoff held each February at the Bay Minette Kid’s Park, where 1 mile and 5K runs are held, local businesses and schools compete for coveted awards and bragging rights, and community members gather to eat all-youcan-eat chili. The proceeds of the event go directly to benefit the NBCEE Teacher Grant Program. In the spring of each year, NBCEE accepts applications from teachers at each of the eight public schools in north Baldwin County. The applications are judged by an independent, objective and unbiased panel and winners are awarded their grant during an exciting, surprise “prize patrol” visit to their classroom in the last month of school. Each summer, NBCEE sponsors and organizes Summer Enrichment Camps for children of all ages, and to date, approximately 2,300 youngsters have attended an array of camps at several of our local school locations. Camps this past summer included Beauty School Camp, Band Camps, CSI: Bay Minette, Sew Simple, Cooking With Class, Seriously Seuss, Water Works, Adventures in Space, Conservation Camp, What to Wear and How to Act: A Modern Etiquette Class, Fit & Fab and Growing Engineers: A STEM Science Camp. Summer Camp offerings are posted on our website, www.nbcee.org, usually by the end of May each year. In January of each year, NBCEE recognizes each of the Teachers of the Year from our eight schools at a Bay Minette City Council meeting. Through annual fundraising and sponsorships, NBCEE awards each of them with gift, along with a gift bag which is made possible by the generous donations from local businesses and community members. The North Baldwin Coalition for Excellence in Education foundation works with all eight schools to provide additional resources and enrichment opportunities for students and faculty, as well as annual Teacher Grant allotments. In addition, the education foundation sponsors more than a dozen summer camps for children ranging from conservation and engineering to sewing and cooking. NBCEE president Liana Barnett it’s important to promote and support local schools because a healthy school system coincides with a strong community. “We know the education of our children now will have a significant impact on the workforce of our future." Accepting Applications for YEA! Fall 2017 Class
The South Baldwin Chamber Foundation is accepting applications for the Young Entrepreneurs Academy (YEA!) fall of 2017 class. YEA! is a yearlong program that guides middle and high school students (grades 6-12) through launching and running their own business or social movement! If you know a student who has the determination and creativity to succeed in YEA! Participant Opportunities include: Guest Speaker — Guest speakers share their expertise with the class! Speak to the Young Entrepreneurs about business, specific areas of knowledge, or entrepreneurial experiences. (30-60 minutes). Graphic Designers — Graphic designers meet with students and produce business literature for student to run businesses, including business cards, brochures, letterhead, and any other marketing materials appropriate for each enterprise. (Approximately 5-10 hours design time). Attorneys — Attorneys meet with the YEA! class to explain legal business structures, patent information, and other logistical legal concepts relevant to the student businesses. (30-60 minutes). Accountants — YEA! students benefit from financial advice provided by volunteer accountants including budgeting, financing, and taxes. (30-60 minutes). Web Developers — Many student businesses offer on-line resources or shopping. Web developers assist in the development of these web sites, in addition to helping the YEA! class understand the process and importance of web creation. (Approximately 10-20 hours development time). Business Mentor — Mentors work with Young Entrepreneurs Academy student businesses to assist in the creation of their business plans. For six weeks, mentors provide guidance and feedback as students think through all aspects of their business creation, write their business plans, and prepare their Investor Panel presentations. (One class visit per week for 7 weeks). Field Trips — Students explore local businesses to understand how different enterprises work by touring local businesses and meeting with business professionals. (Field trip host provides overview from the business owner and tour of business. May provide refreshments or takeaways. Time commitment varies). YEA! Investor Panelists — Students receive start-up capital through the generous donations of YEA! Investor Panelists. YEA! Investors are invited to sit on the panel to listen to student presentations and award capital investments. (Investors provide a financial contribution and four hours of time during the Investor Panel event).

Autauga County Schools Robertsdale HS Cheerleaders Earn Multiple Awards at Cheer Camp
Robertsdale High School Varsity cheerleaders did an amazing job at UCA cheer camp in Panama City Beach this summer. The squad received 2 gold superior ribbons, and one Red Super Ribbon in evaluations. Banana (Spirit Award), Spirit Stick, First Place Trophy in Cheer, First Place Trophy in Extreme Routine, 5th place in sideline, 5th place in game day and 3rd place overall. All American Awards went to Elizabeth Smith, Jackie Landeros, Taya Wilkinson, and Tiler Coley. Pin It Forward award went to Taya Wilkinson. How to Repair a Broken Relationship With Your Teen How’s your relationship with your teen? Do feel there is a distance between you and your child, and the space is only increasing everyday? Has your once happy relationship with your kid turned into open animosity with your teen? Maybe it feels like your sweet baby went upstairs one day, and came down a totally different person – someone who seems like a total stranger to you? You’re not alone. I get calls every day from parents just like you who say, “My relationship with my teen is disintegrating before my eyes. What can I do?” If that sounds like a call you could make right now, let me share some ways you can start mending your relationship before it is destroyed altogether. Consider implementing some of these relationship repairs:
Take Stock of the Relationship
Like going into your closet and getting rid of all the clothes that don’t fit us anymore or have simply gone out of style, we need to go into our parenting closet and take inventory. This requires an honest evaluation of the actions, beliefs, styles, and habits in our home and a willingness to toss out everything that doesn’t belong or doesn’t work. What are some areas that you can change and adapt as a parent? How can you accommodate the growing needs of your teenager? How can you grow alongside them as they learn to navigate the world? Like reaching back into the closet and taking out those corduroy bell-bottoms you haven’t worn since high school, take regular time to examine the ways you are connecting to your teen. See what is out of style, what needs to change and what keeps you stuck in the past. I realize that these are tough words to handle. It’s not easy to hear that maybe something we are doing as parents is hurting our kids. But we can all readily admit that we don’t have the parenting gig down pat. There’s always room for growth as moms and dads.
Start Asking Questions
Want to get your relationship with your teen back on track? Start asking the right kind of questions. Ask the kinds of questions that make them think about things, not just “yes” or Eastern Shore Parents I August 2017
“no” questions. Find out what they think, how they would do something, where they would go, and why. When a discussion leads to surprising expressions of wisdom from your teen, take advantage of the moment to reinforce their insights. Talk about controversial subjects as you would with a friend or co-worker for whom you have great respect. Never belittle their opinions about things. After all, did you know everything when you were a teen? Then, ask some more personal questions. “What could I do to improve our relationship?” or “What things would you like to see change in our family?” Let me warn you–if you ask these types of questions, you may not like what you hear. But don’t run from the answers. Hearing honest feedback from your child may open your eyes to areas that need to change. You’ll also be communicating to your child that you desire to do everything you can to restore and maintain a loving relationship.
Take Ownership for Mistakes
The statement “I was wrong” (when said by a parent) can do wonders for a broken relationship. If you handled a situation poorly, admit where you made a mistake. Never will your child respect you more than when you admit your faults and ask for forgiveness. Humble parents who admit their mistakes and apologize are building healthy, happy families.
Create the Proper Environment
Don’t let your family get emotionally stuck in the mistakes and tension of the past. Create an environment that welcomes and invites change. If you feel like it’s time to make some positive shifts in your family, sit everyone down and tell them, “We need to make some changes around here–me included. It’s not going to be the same-old, same-old. Let’s work together as a family to move forward.” I’ve spoken on this topic at seminars a few times. And afterwards, I always have parents and teens come up to me and say, “Thank you! We decided as a family that we needed to change, and it was one of the best decisions we made. Our kids are happier, and we feel happier as parents!” 44
Act On It
Once you decide to make some changes towards restoring broken relationships, it’s time to act! Maybe you’ve realized that as a mom or dad you have been too overprotective in certain areas. Apologize to your kids and show them that you are working on changing and releasing some control. Perhaps you’ve seen that much of your conversation with your children comes off as judgmental. Express to your family your desire to change, and work towards infusing your conversations with grace. Or maybe you’ve realized that you just haven’t spent the time you need with your teen. Drop that weekend golf game, or forgo that daily run, in order to spend time with your teen. Those visible actions convey your willingness to work towards a better relationship.
Stay With the Plan
We don’t wake up one day with the perfect marriage, perfect kids, or perfect home. Those relationships take time and effort. So if your connection with your teen is in trouble, and you are working towards making positive changes, don’t give up! Stay with the plan. In difficult transitions, your teen may push back. They may dig in their heels as you try to rebuild the relationship. But keep the mindset and attitude that says, “We’re not going backward, only forward.” Even if you get nothing but grief from your teen at first, keep up your weekly time together, week after week. Eventually they’ll come around. Remember, relationships thrive when unconditional love is delivered across a bridge of friendship that never stops — even if your teen doesn’t respond. He or she may secretly be testing your commitment! I want to challenge you today to commit to rebuilding a relationship with your child, and that starts with good communications. No matter how strained or difficult your relationship might be, there is always hope. It may take time and persistence, but keep at it.

Dip In, Pay It Off! Q. My wife just had our first child. Now, we now have about $3,000 in medical bills not covered by insurance. We’ve got $8,000 in our emergency fund, and I make between $25,000 and $30,000 a year. Should we try setting up a payment plan with the hospital, or is dipping into our savings a better idea? A. I’d write a check today and knock out that hospital bill. This falls under the heading of “emergency” in my mind, so pay the bill and jump back into rebuilding your emergency fund. You’ve done a really good job of saving on your income, but let’s see what we can do about making better money in the future. Extra practical training in your field, or more education in the classroom, could increase your income quickly. Your emergency fund needs to be a little bigger as well, and it’ll be a lot easier to make this happen if you’re making more money. I’m sure you’re a hard-working guy, but it’s going to be tough for even a small family

to make it on what you’re bringing home now. The unexpected can become a common occurrence when there’s a little one in the picture.
Can They Really Garnish My Wages? Q. I got a call from a debt collector regarding $2,000 I owe in medical bills. I’m trying to get my finances in order and pay this off, but I’m afraid they’ll follow through on their threat to garnish my wages. Can you give me some advice? A. First, I want you to take a deep breath and calm down. Debt collectors like to play on your emotions because they think you’ll give in and do something you can’t really afford to do. Most of them don’t care about you or your

situation as long as they get some money. They won’t garnish your wages because they can’t. They would have to go through the formal, legal procedure of first suing you and then winning the case. They broke federal law by saying they would garnish your wages but hadn’t sued you. If I’m in your shoes, I’d be filing a complaint against these bozos with the Federal Trade Commission. Don’t react with fear and panic in the face of debt collector threats. Talk to them and explain your situation. See if you can work out a compromise. If they get nasty or break federal law again, let them know you’ll be filing another complaint with the FTC. In the meantime, do everything you can to scrape up as much cash as possible. Have a big garage sale and sell everything in your attic or basement you don’t need. Then, when you get this mess cleaned up, pay off the rest of your debts — if you have any — and start living on a written monthly budget!

Picky eating isn’t uncommon among youngsters, but that doesn’t make the issue any less frustrating for parents. What are some ways we can make healthy foods more attractive to a selective kiddo? Strike while the iron is hot. Tummies growling just before dinner? Set out a plate of fresh-cut fruits and vegetables with peanut butter, a low-fat dressing or yogurt-based dip for your hungry brood to munch on while you prep dinner. Cook together. Kids can tear lettuce leaves, wash fruits and vegetables and stir ingredients. “When they’re involved in the cooking process, they’re often more likely to try what they’ve helped create,” says registered dietitian Lynn Kistler. Ta-da! Present food in playful ways. Cut sandwiches into
stars with a cookie cutter. Offer “ants on a log” with celery, peanut butter and raisins. And, serve food on kid-sized plates and bowls featuring their favorite characters, suggests Dr. Joan Sechrist, RD.
Taste test. “Hey, what’s
that funny star-shaped fruit?” Take advantage of your child’s natural curiosity. Explore the produce section at the grocery store. Talk about the origin of different foods and suggest that your child choose something for the family try. “Make a game out of trying new foods. Encourage children to try at least one bite,” Kistler says. “Focus more on the color, shape, feel, texture or smell of the new food rather than the taste.”
Kids often prefer fresh fruits and veggies over heated. Try a few of these options: Fresh pineapple Watermelon Blueberries Strawberries Baby carrots Sugar snap peas Green bell peppers Apple slices Broccoli/cauliflower spears Green salad

Do as I say...and as I do. Introduce small bites of new foods with those that your kids like.
When you dine out, invite them to try a bite of whatever you’re eating. “If children witness their parents eating a varied, nutrient-dense diet in a genuine way--not because they’re eating ‘diet food’ to lose weight--children will be more likely to follow through as well,” says Crystal Witte, a registered dietitian and nutritionist.
Be patient. Taste buds evolve over time. “Instead of expecting your child to eat all of her broccoli, ask her to try just one bite. Over time, your child is more likely to develop a taste preference for that food. Repeated exposure is key,” Witte says. Shhh....don’t tell. “As a last resort, you can sneak fruits and veggies into fun foods they like,” Kistler says. Add chopped up peppers or broccoli to quesadillas. Puree veggies like cauliflower or squash into mac and cheese or spaghetti sauce. Avoid power struggles. Experts agree, kids shouldn’t be forced to eat a food or clean their plates. “Keeping the dinner table a pleasant place will teach your child to associate eating with positive feelings,” Kistler says. What to Consider Before Using GPS to Track Your Kid Sooner or later, most parents lose a kid—usually for only a few minutes. A toddler figures out how to open an unlatched door. A kindergartener heads off to investigate something in another grocery aisle. A school age child gets confused about the pick up location. Even if it’s brief, the experience is heart-stopping. And it’s given rise to a whole new industry--GPS tracking for kids. Some parents turn to GPS because the world seems scarier than it was when they were kids. Others want an electronic yenta who can keep an eye on children (and their caregivers) when parents can’t be there. Still others want a better way to supervise and enforce family rules about safety. For those who really can’t take care of themselves—very young children, kids with disabilities, even pets or elders with dementia—tracking devices may produce peace of mind. And, for children, that can be a problem. Experts point out that tracking devices can encourage both passivity and a false sense of security in children as well as parents. As parents find themselves counting on surveillance, they may be less intentional about helping kids anticipate and avoid risks. Instead of learning what they need to know to navigate confidently and safely in a risky world, kids depend on the panic button that summons Mom. That said, there are situations in which a tracker can be very useful—think amusement parks or kids who walk to and from school. Before purchasing the technology, consider these questions: What does it do? Some trackers, like Trax, do nothing but show location. They can be attached to children, elders, pets or even a laptop that tends to wander off. Many units resemble watches or function like flip phones. Eastern Shore Parents I August 2017
And some, like the Amby Gear Smartwatch, include games or virtual pets. For little kids, the extra bells and whistles may be distracting. For an older child, they may make the device more appealing. What’s the technology? Tracking units that use GPS depend on satellites and some provide coverage pretty much anywhere on the planet. Other devices use the cellphone network so they won’t work if the child wanders out of range. Still, other devices like My Buddy Tag use Bluetooth technology. Their reach is limited, though that may be just fine if you’re trying to keep tabs on a child in the backyard or your local park. The most accurate devices like the Wherecom Kidfit use a combination of technologies. What does it monitor? At the very least a tracking device should pinpoint a child’s location. Some send a signal at intervals; others allow continuous tracking though that may drain the battery. Many units make it possible to set up safety zones or geofences and send an alert if the child goes beyond those boundaries. Is it complicated? For very young children, simplicity is a virtue. Tinitell, for example, is a band with a button. If a child pushes the button, the device calls preprogrammed numbers until someone picks up. Check the app as well as the device. If it has lots of features, be sure customer support is readily available. Is the device secure? If you have to sign in to get information about your child’s location, it’s possible for other people to sign in too. What precautions has the company 50
taken to prevent hacking? What kind of alerts will you get if there is a security breach? What kind of communication is possible? Some units have a big panic button a child can press. Some allow one way communication. More expensive devices like the GizmoGadget, available from Verizon, provide two way communication similar to a cellphone. Is it kid-proof? Some kids can handle delicate equipment and some can’t. Choose a GPS unit accordingly. Pocket Finder, for example, is built out of plastic that’s almost indestructible. The Korex Babysitter claims to be waterproof. Be sure the clasp on any band is secure and easy to use. How much does it cost? Tracking devices range from $40 to $200. Many devices also require a monthly service contract that can cost from $4 to $40 per month. Before signing with a new service, check your existing cellphone provider to see if they offer a better deal on a device. Are there special features for special kids? AngelSense is designed to provide extra layers of protection for children with special needs that make them more vulnerable. Doki lets parents schedule reminders or deactivate the distracting features of the watch when the kid is supposed to be concentrating on other things. Of course, by the time a child is old enough for a cellphone, the tracking question is moot. Cellphones are trackers with a variety of apps that will monitor where children are and what they are doing. For older kids, parents need to think carefully and talk frequently about the intersection between privacy and trust. Some kids may benefit from additional supervision, but parents must keep their eyes on the ultimate goal—raising children who are responsible and confident enough to make their own decisions about staying safe in a complicated world. Every parent has that one trick up their sleeve that helps make life just a little simpler in the midst of a hectic school year. Read on for some of their best tips, clever tricks and genius hacks for back to school. Plan your meals.
Steer clear of the drive-thru on hectic evenings by taking 10 minutes each weekend to plan simple meals for the week. With a complete grocery list in hand, head to the store to purchase everything you’ll need. To further simplify planning, Gina Nichols, a mom of four and a Wildtree freezer meal consultant, recommends prepping food when you get home from the store, filing favorite recipes for easy reference and maintaining a well-stocked

pantry. Theme nights like pasta on Mondays, tacos on Tuesday, etc., can also help. Ask your family for their suggestions too.
Schedule grocery delivery. More grocery stores now offer online ordering and delivery services, helpful for families who dislike grocery shopping or struggle to stick to a budget when there. Stock the freezer. Stash your freezer
with healthy casseroles, soups, sauces and crockpot meals to make dinnertime a no-brainer on busy weeknights. “Try to make your cooking always do double duty. Make a little extra of everything and if you don’t want it right away, freeze it,” Nichols says.
Establish a snack/brown bag lunch station. Designate a
shelf in your kitchen or pantry for parentapproved snacks and lunch items. Tape a list inside the cupboard door with lunch ideas. On Sundays, pre-pack snacks that kids can easily grab like trail mix, pretzels, granola bars or cereal. Stock the refrigerator with fruits and veggies that have been pre-washed/cut, as well as cheese and yogurt sticks. To save time in the mornings, help your children make their lunches and pack their snacks the night before.
Share the daily action plan.
Laurie Loudenback hands her kids, ages 10 and 12, a clipboard each morning which
includes the day’s schedule, chores, and screen time limits. “This chart has been pretty life-changing,” says Loudenback, whose husband Scott designed it (see photo). “The first thing the kids say in the morning is ‘I need my chart.’”
Set up a master calendar. Post a white board
with the week’s calendar to help everyone in the family know what to expect in the coming week. Use color-coded dry erase markers for each family member’s activities and cold or hot lunch preferences.
Hold family meetings. Alexis Sanchez, mom
of four, says she gathers her family on Sunday nights to discuss the week ahead, including upcoming activities and “to brainstorm any kinks” that need to be worked out in the schedule.
Spruce up backpacks. Extend the
life of a much-loved backpack by giving it a back-to-school cleaning. Depending on the material, backpacks can generally be hand washed, spot cleaned or placed in a laundry bag or pillow case and run through the washing machine. Be sure to empty out all of the pockets and vacuum

out crumbs before hand. If you hand wash it, soak it in warm water for 15 minutes with a teaspoon of laundry detergent. Rinse well and air dry.
Manage paperwork. “Everyday
after school,” Sanchez says, “we have a mandatory ‘empty your book bag’ rule.” Her children file important documents like those that need to be signed by a parent into an office divider. Label a folder with the name of your child and school year to easily collect artwork and other keepsakes throughout the year. Sanchez keeps her folders in a plastic file box.

Create a homework station.
Designate a well-lit place in your home where homework can be completed without distractions. Create a homework caddy stocked with notebook paper, pens, pencils, crayons, colored pencils, rulers, and highlighters-anything your child might need to complete an assignment.
Make a homework plan. If your
child struggles with organization, go through their backpack together. Make a stack for the night’s homework and help your child prioritize what needs to be completed first. Use a calendar to help them plan long-term assignments.
Use a timer. If your child gets overwhelmed by lengthy math worksheets or other difficult assignments, try using a timer like the Time Timer app and set a goal. For example, after he completes 10 problems, take a break for a quick snack. “Frequent breaks are important in helping students and their parents with homework,” says Amber Dawkins, a former teacher and a mom to a four-year-old son. Attend back-to-school functions. Help your child get back into
the school groove by attending school orientations, ice cream socials or sneak-a-peeks. “Even reconnecting with one or two friends or meeting a teacher in person before the first day of school can make a difference to a child,” Dawkins says.
Connect in a memorable way. Be ready to meet a few new parents at back-to-school functions who you’ll want to reconnect with later. Mom of two, Kristal Ronnebaum suggests handing out a family calling card. “It’s a method of sharing your contact information in a fun and creative way,” Ronnebaum says. You can also hand the card to babysitters, carpool drivers and new neighbors (attached to a small housewarming gift).
Encourage rest. A successful school
year requires quality sleep. “Start edging those bedtimes back a week or two in advance of school starting,” Dawkins says. Maintain a regular evening routine that helps your child unwind before bed, such as a warm bath or shower and reading time. Also, build unstructured time into your child’s weekly schedule for playing with friends and pursuing creative endeavors. ESP

Team sports are a great way to keep kids active but not all kids enjoy playing them. When kids avoid team sports, parents look for other ways their children can continue to be healthy and active. How can you get your kids moving around when they aren’t part of a sports team? Encourage lifelong activities Choose activities that have the potential for lifelong enjoyment such as biking, swimming, walking, and hiking. These activities are great because while they can be done individually, for a lifetime, they also can be enjoyed as a family. Encourage everyone to go on a walk or bike ride together, hike in a local park, or spend the day at the pool. Give your kid a camera and let him photograph the beauty of the outdoors. Get a step counter for each family member and create a friendly competition to see who can get the most steps.
Go outside Simply getting your kids outside can be a great way to sneak in exercise. Visit a local park, encourage them to climb trees, swing, or play tag. Have your child go on a “treasure hunt” in the backyard and col-

lect items that interest them like sticks, rocks, flowers, or leaves. Catching fireflies in the summer, building a snowman in the winter, or raking leaves in the fall all help kids to be active while not playing a sport.
Individual sports Just because your child does not enjoy team sports does not mean they may not enjoy an individual sport. Gymnastics, swimming, track and field, wrestling, diving, archery, golf, or weight lifting are all good examples of individual sports where children compete against themselves.
Limit screen time When screen time is allowed, try to encourage them to move while they are watching television. If a song comes on, get up and dance or march along. If they are playing video games, encourage games that involve movement. If the child is sedentary while enjoying screen time, ask them to complete some sort of activity like chores or outdoor play before they turn the television or tablet on.
Set an example Children learn by example. If the parent has a low activity level the child will most likely see exercise as a low priority. Lead by example and get moving. Begin an exercise routine or a hobby that includes movement, like gardening, and invite your child to join you. Make the most of the time together.
Dance and theater Turn on the music and have a family dance party. There is nothing like a great song to get a body moving. Dancing is fun and it’s great exercise too. Some children may also enjoy trying dance classes, baton twirling, or cheerleading. All of these are a great source of exercise. If your child is drawn to music and theater get them involved in a theater production in school or your community.
Find a new hobby Encourage your child to find a hobby that encourages movement and activity such as skateboarding, fishing, bowling, and woodworking. If the child is doing something they enjoy they won’t even notice they are also exercising.

Play Leisure sports can be more fun for kids that don’t care for team sports because they are less competitive and therefore have less pressure to perform at a higher level. Encouraging kids to play gets them active. Playing frisbee or frisbee golf, tag, catch, shooting hoops, and duck duck goose all require kids to run around. They will be having so much fun they won’t notice they are exercising.
Chores Chores are a great way to get kids active and teach them the value of hard work at the same time. Ask your child to clean their room, vacuum, mow the lawn, or sweep. Consider paying them an allowance for more motivation. While team sports have many benefits, they are not for everyone. Kids who do not enjoy team sports don’t have to be less active. With these tips, kids will enjoy an active lifestyle that can be maintained for a lifetime. ESP

MPAA Rating: PG Overall: B Violence: C+ Sexual Content: B+ Profanity: B+ Alcohol / Drug Use: B+ The MPAA has rated Despicable Me 3 PG for action and rude humor. Gru, Lucy (voices of Steve Carell and Kristen Wiig) and their adorable daughters may be moviegoers’ new favorite family. And for good reason. The villain-turned-virtuous dad adopted three orphans and then married his secret agent sweetheart. While Gru got the fatherhood thing figured out in the previous movies, Lucy still hasn’t found her footing when it comes to life as a parent. Meanwhile the minions have had it with Gru’s good guy persona and set out on their own. However, their reformed boss is soon tempted to return to the dark side. The invitation comes from his twin Dru (voice also by Carell), a sibling Gru didn’t know he had. Dru, also a villain, wants Gru to join him in a heist that will bond them as brothers. For audiences, it may be impossible to find three cuter characters than Margo, Edith and Agnes. But despite their big eyes and winsome personalities, this isn’t an entirely kid-friendly film, especially for younger children. Like so many animations, this one is packed full of cartoon-style punches, scuffles, guns, rockets and explosions. The script also introduces a mammoth-sized robot intent on destroying Los Angeles. Fortunately, this sequel comes with some sweet life lessons about dealing with those grown-up concerns. (Even little Agnes choses to face disappointment with a positive attitude adjustment.) But the messages most likely to charm audience members are those about families, in all their configurations. Because nothing could be better than someone who has your back.
MPAA Rating: PG-13 Overall: AViolence: CSexual Content: AProfanity: CAlcohol / Drug Use: AThe MPAA has rated Dunkirk PG-13 for intense war experience and some language. In the early days of World War II, after the Germans had pushed the Allied armies into Northern France, the mainly British Expeditionary Forces, along with troops from France, Poland, Belgium, The Netherlands and Canada, were surrounded at Dunkirk. The seaside community had been heavily shelled and water supplies cut off. Considering the massive numbers of German forces (estimated at 800,000), the Allies were convinced their fate was sealed. Moving to the beach, their only hope was to reach the safety of England. However, getting across the relatively narrow English Channel was more difficult than it appeared. The resulting massive evacuation process forms the backbone of Christopher Nolan’s movie Dunkirk. If ever a movie had you yearning for a seatbelt (and possibly hearing protection), Dunkirk is it. Rather than drawing viewers into the fight with detailed character development, the director provides a virtual experience of what it might have been like to be in the middle of a conflict many historians believe was a contributing reason for Germany losing the war. The choice to keep the content well within the PG-13 rating allows this movie to be accessible to teen audiences. That doesn’t mean there isn’t violence. Yet Nolan wisely uses the stunning visuals and sound effects, as opposed to explicit graphic carnage, to convince us that we are blessed not to be part of the action.
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Boss Baby (Rental) MPAA Rating: PG Overall: B Violence: BSexual Content: B Profanity: AAlcohol / Drug Use: A The MPAA has rated The Boss Baby PG for some mild rude humor. Tim Templeton (voice of Miles Bakshi) is a seven-year-old blessed with a wonderful family. Not only do his Mom and Dad (voices of Lisa Kudrow and Jimmy Kimmel) engage in his imaginative play, but they also read him three stories, give him five hugs and sing him one song each night. However, that perfect life is shattered with the arrival of a little brother (voiced by Alec Baldwin). As Tim suspected, Boss Baby is not a normal kid. Instead he’s a manager from BabyCorp (that’s a heavenly place where babies come from) sent to investigate the dropping popularity of having children and stop the rising trend of raising puppies instead. When Tim figures out that Boss Baby will leave as soon as his earthly mission is complete, the boy agrees to help the little tike in order to get rid of his disruptive presence. Youngsters are sure to get caught up in the plot to rid the world of a manipulative corporate leader and his drag-dressing assistant. The slapstick antics, plentiful drool and potty humor, along with many depictions of barebottomed babies are definitely aimed at this demographic too. Still, moments of peril and some scary images may be a bit too frightening for the littlest ones. Despite how ridiculous the adventures portrayed here may be, the idea that working together leads to caring for each other, and that caring leads to loving, does apply to real life. It is that message which may make this zany animation a bundle of joy your whole family can enjoy.
MPAA Rating: PG-13 Overall: B+ Violence: C Sexual Content: BProfanity: CAlcohol / Drug Use: B The MPAA has rated Spider-Man: Homecoming PG-13 for sci-fi action violence, some language and brief suggestive comments. Launching another version of this well-loved icon is a bit of a gamble because there is lots of room for disappointment from unsatisfied fans. But in the case, the risk pays off. We were briefly introduced to the young Peter Parker (Tom Holland) who already has his “spidey” powers in Captain America: Civil War, so this film wastes no time with backstory. The story plunges into the teen’s struggle to balance his time between school, family and stopping crime. We meet his friends and classmates, and these relationships form the core of the movie and add greatly to its humor. More than anything, Peter wants to reach his Spider-Man potential, and is impatiently waiting to be part of the Avengers team. Yet his mentor Tony Stark (Iron Man), as well as the other superheroes, feel the lad still has a lot of growing up to do. Frustrated, Peter wants to show them they are wrong, so he continually seeks out more and more dangerous situations in the hope of proving what he is made of. Rather than making that point, the fledgling champion soon discovers that having superpowers doesn’t necessary mean you are invincible. And it is this realization that sparks Peter’s journey to develop the discipline and maturity needed to help protect those he loves. Eastern Shore Parents I August 2017
