Is it just me or has this been the shortest summer ever? Maybe it seems short after having a 5-month summer last year. Or maybe it is because we are all finally out and about having a great time. Time definitely flies by when you are having fun! After all of the chaos and strangeness of the 2020-2021 school year, I think we can all get excited about going back to school with a lot more normalcy. Not only that, our household has the added excitement of having a senior this year! Getting ready for senior year can be a lot of fun, but it is also a stressful time. Some students are vigorously prepping for ACTs/SATs and getting college applications ready, while others are researching what career path they may enter after graduation and deciding if it is on to additional career/technical training or heading straight into the work force. Each scenario is exciting and almost all of these require some sort of resume or application. In this competitive world we live in, sometimes a resume filled with extracurricular activities may give a student an advantage. Is shows the reviewer a more well rounded picture of the applicant. While filling up your resume may be a nice side effect to participating in extracurriculars, it is not the only benefit to enjoying a variety of activities. As Cheryl Maguire explains in this month’s feature, 5 Benefits of Multiple Extracurricular Activities, there are many reasons to get your child involved after school, at any age. From preschool to high school, registering for after school activities has always been a big part of the “Back to School” season and we want to help with that process. Each August we publish an extensive list of after school activities available in the area. Having three children with ever changing interests, I am grateful for the variety of opportunities offered. Whether your children love team sports, performing arts, scouting, fine arts or individual sports, you are sure to find just what you are looking for in this year’s After School Activities Guide on page 48. Multiple activities can get expensive, so make sure you also check out any clubs your school may offer. This is another great, and inexpensive, way to get involved! Registration fees aren’t the only things that can get expensive this time of year. We all know the shock of getting to the checkout line to find out just how much “a few” school supplies can cost. Fortunately, Sarah Lyons give us some helpful cost saving tips in Don’t Break the Bank on Back to School, on page 40. If you are blessed enough to afford a few extra supplies after your savings, make sure to donate supplies to the school or other backpack drives and help those who may not be as fortunate. Also, check with your school to see if there are any other items (clothing, shoes, snacks, etc.) that some of the students may need. Every child deserves to be fully equipped and ready the first day, and every day, of school. Go out, soak up the last few days of summer break, and get re-energized to head back to school! We wish everyone a wonderful school year!

why God gave parents to children. The role of parents is to shape children into productive members of society. However, when we make judgements without being curious we tend to intervene and correct behaviors when they aren’t necessarily wrong. Here are some practical ways to choose curiosity first: by Beth Long, PhD, LPC, BCBA
“My Parents Don’t Even Try to Understand Me!” In 1987, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince recorded a hilarious song that captures the tumultuous relationship between teenagers and their parents called, “Parents Don’t Understand”. I am quite certain that at least one poet of every generation has pinned similar lines, which leads us to the wise kid statement of the month: “My parents don’t even try to understand me”. These words are spoken by every child at least once, but typically 1,000,000 times before the age of 20. If your child has never said these words to you, wait until they are a teenager. As most of my teenage clients point out, we truly do not understand the pressures of being a teenager in the 21st century. What all children truly need is for their parents to be compassionate towards them. Compassion requires us to listen without being judgmental. Unfortunately, our intense love for our children makes this almost
impossible. When we are conversing with our children we want to jump in and correct every irrational thing that they say or do. Our judgement of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in that moment is counter intuitive to what they want and need from us. How do we resolve this age-old problem? We attempt to be initially curious instead of quick to judgment. The definition of curiosity is “a desire to know and learn”. Every parent wants to intimately know their children, but we hinder that possibility when we choose to form a judgment before being curious. Curiosity listens, judgment interrupts. Curiosity asks questions, judgment lectures. Curiosity attempts to understand, judgment limits the possibility of a different perspective. If we want to truly understand our children, we have to learn to bite our tongues and be curious. Biting our tongues is a good idea, but let’s be honest, sometimes our children’s thoughts, feelings, emotions, and behaviors are foolish and require intervention. That is
1. Listen without offering your opinion. A lot of times kids will hear their own flawed logic when we give them a safe place to verbally process their thoughts and feelings. 2. Validate feelings without validating behavior. You can hold and comfort your daughter when you tell her, “No”. She needs firm boundaries, but it is okay for her to be sad about them. 3. Do not always correct or disagree with their irrational thinking in the moment. You can always initiate a conversation about why you disagree later. 4. Learn to appreciate the differences between yourself and your children. Take personality tests with your family and educate yourself on the variety of perspectives in your home. 5. If your child’s opinion is contrary to yours, consult with adults you trust to understand your child’s viewpoint. 6. Make a list of family rules that are nonnegotiable and allow for some “wiggle room” in the areas not covered by those rules. Dr. Beth Long received her education in Counseling Psychology from Chapman University. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Spider Bite? Or Staph Infection? Hey guys! School is back in full swing and there are lots of illnesses going around. Today I want to talk about a common misconception about your child’s health. Almost every day, I see a patient who claims they have a spider bite. Luckily, spider bites are exceedingly rare. The most common explanation of a swollen, red area that’s tender on the skin is a skin infection. One of the more frequent culprits is a bacteria named Staphylococcus aureus, often referred to simply as “staph,” that is carried on the skin and in the nose of healthy people. It’s estimated that between 30-60% of all people have “staph” on their skin. But the real problem is the emergence of a “staph” bacteria called MRSA that is resistant to penicillin-based antibiotics. Current studies show that somewhere between 10-50% of all people have this MRSA on their skin and in their nose, and this is scary business. It’s important to differentiate between hospital-acquired MRSA and communityacquired MRSA (or CA-MRSA). The hospital acquired type is very aggressive and occurs in people recently hospitalized, in nursing homes, and/or healthcare workers. The CAMRSA can occur in anyone! The CA-MRSA can be very aggressive as well, but mainly causes skin infections that may look like a pimple or
Eastern Shore Parents I August 2021
boil and can be red, swollen, painful, or have pus or other drainage. The most common ways of spreading CA-MRSA occurs in people that have close contact with someone who has a history of boils or abscesses and amongst athletes who share equipment. Those with a weakened immune system are at a greater risk of having an invasive disease as well. I have only seen one actual spider bite in my pediatric career; however, I have seen thousands of MRSA infections! We now routinely see 5-10 cases per week and sometimes 4-6 cases per day during the spring and summer! Let’s talk about some ways to protect your child and family. You can protect yourself from infections by practicing good hygiene (i.e., keeping your hands clean by washing with soap and water and showering after working out); covering any open skin area such as abrasions or cuts with a clean dry bandage; avoiding sharing personal items such as towels or razors; using a barrier (e.g., clothing or a towel) between your skin and shared workout equipment; and wiping surfaces of equipment before and after use (example- in the locker room and weight room at school). While lots of schools and businesses have closed to “clean them up“, as soon as the kids come back with the
10
bacteria on their skin or in their nose, the risk of spread returns. So what can you do? Definitely see your healthcare provider for any red, swollen bug bites or scratches to be evaluated for infection. While rare, MRSA has been known to cause very serious infections in otherwise healthy kids, including blood infections and pneumonia. And yes, they can be treated with non-penicillin based antibiotics and creams, although most need to be drained and cultured to see what antibiotics will work best for your child. And yes, it can re-occur. There is no way to eradicate the MRSA bacteria once you have it, but common sense and good hygiene can go a long way. MRSA is here to stay in our area! So be very vigilant with your child in terms of bug bites and scratches and seek medical care if worried. Is it a spider bite? Most likely not, but your doctor can help you decide! Until next time, be good. Robert L. Rux, M.D. is a Board Certified Pediatrician at Magnolia Springs Pediatrics. Originally from Mobile, he attended medical school at The University of Alabama School of Medicine (UAB) and completed residency at The Children’s Hospital of Alabama (UAB). He is married to Jaime and has three children, Adler, Walker and Mary McAtee.

A Back-to-School Welcome Letter from Baldwin County Schools Superintendent Eddie Tyler Parents and members of the community, Each year, I go back and read my letter to you from the previous year to see what’s changed, what needs to be included and what may need to be left out. I wish we could leave out a couple things, specifically the word COVID. However, at this time, COVID is still in our communities. What is still included and will always be, is the excitement for a new school year. Things are “coming at us” every day. There are changes every day. There are new developments every day. We are tired of it but it has to be dealt with and we are going to take those challenges head on. That’s my promise to you. I took pride in communicating with you every step of the way last year. As the decisions were made, I told you why and what it meant for you. I did that to try to help ease your fears and so you could make educated decisions for you and your family. You will get the exact same transparency this year. One thing I included in my letter last year that I think is worth another read is this: Please remember WE set the tone for our children. If we are negative about our situation, our children will be too. If we are positive, our children will be, too. I choose positive. Our students need it, we all need it. As we go forward, we are going to start the school year getting back to the basics where the focus is on school rather than a pandemic. We are keeping a few things we changed due to COVID such as our cleaning and sanitization practices but we are working to make this a more “normal” year for our children. Our team is aware of the continuing changes of COVID. We watched last year as the numbers after Fourth of July grew only to fall again after Labor Day and then spike again as we moved into the winter holidays. We are seeing the same type of evolution again this year with numbers climbing after Fourth of July as we head into the start of school. While we expect to have a more normal start to school we are also monitoring the situation. We have plans in place for us to return back to mask, temperature checks or even distance learning if we need to. While I don’t want to overreact I am ready to act if the need arises. You know who else is eagerly awaiting you and our students? Our staff. I cannot brag on our almost four thousand employees enough. I wish I could take you through a day as a custodian, cafeteria worker, counselor, teacher or principal, building and grounds workers, academics team, HR Department… the list goes on and on. These people are warriors. They are trendsetters, they are who make things happen and we are lucky they are ours. For the system as a whole, we have continued with business as usual. We just completed the construction of the new 9th Grade Academy at Fairhope High School. A second 9th Grade Academy is under construction at Daphne High School. It is the intention and vision of the Baldwin County Board of Education and Superintendent Eddie Tyler that every high school in the county will have a separate wing for 9th graders as they transition into high school. Some will be freestanding while others will be incorporated within the current high school buildings. Our newest elementary school, Stonebridge Elementary is also currently under construction and expected to open next school year. It’s going to be a beautiful school and the best part about it, it will be paid for thanks to our Pay As You Go Program where new construction is paid for rather than bringing the costs to our taxpayers. Remember, we are partners. We have to in order to survive those things “coming at us” every day. We will make it through. We will persevere and we will be successful. I leave you with a saying that continues to be a mantra of my staff: “Relationships before rigor, grace before grades, patience before programs and love before lessons.” -Dr. Brad Johnson Maybe next year we can leave a few things out. Until then, I’ll let the old coach come out a little, let’s get ready to roll!

Some students were even given the chance of taking their sketchbooks around the galleries for inspiration and across Bancroft Street to visit the Mosher Castle grounds! Registration for next summer will go live March 2022 at www.esartcenter.org.
Campers had a great day learning about robots at the Fairhope Educational Enrichment Foundation Summer Camp! The students designed their own robot using the engineering design process. They also learned about the Mobile Bay bar pilots. They turned our Beebots into ships and navigated through the Mobile Bay channel.
BMES Campers Tie Dye Shirts the Natural Way
Summer campers at Bay Minette Elementary learned how to make their own tie dye shirts using natural options. Charlotte Roberts from Alabama Cooperative Extension System taught the campers about the various fruits, vegetables, and flowers that can be used to create vibrant tie dye designs. After learning all about these options, the campers got to create their own shirts. Roberts visits the camp weekly to talk with the students about healthy habits, and the importance of taking care of nature and learning life skills through hands-on learning, such growing plants and vegetables. Foley ES Teachers Participate in Ag in the Classroom Training
Ag in the Classroom was an amazing opportunity for educators to learn the importance of teaching not only the What and Where, but Who is behind the work, how AL farms provide resources, build sustainability, and why Alabama commodities are vital to our everyday life. Foley Elementary teachers were honored to be accepted into the program! They were inspired by teachers who shared their lessons, ideas, and ways of implementing Ag in the Classroom. They toured @blueribbondairyllc and @whippoorwill_vineyards and had an amazing lunch @lazenbyfarms. The teachers laughed a lot and built many connections and friendships. A huge thanks to @alfafarmers for hosting an eye-opening learning opportunity they can take back and share with the future of Alabama!

Local Student Participates in Rural Health Scholars Program at UA
Fairhope resident Kyla Shaw participated in the Rural Health Scholars Program at The University of Alabama this summer where she learned about the need that rural communities have for more doctors and other health care professionals. Kyla spent five weeks on the UA campus taking college courses for credit and learning how to prepare to enter the health profession education and training. The Rural Health Scholars Program aims to provide opportunities for rising high school seniors from rural communities in Alabama to pursue careers in medicine and other health care professions. Students take college courses, participate in seminars with practicing health care professionals and visit health care facilities. The mission of the college is to improve and promote the health of individuals and communities in rural Alabama and the Southeast region through leadership in medical and health-related education, primary care and population health; the provision of high-quality, accessible health care services; and research and scholarship. The Rural Health Scholars Program is part of the college’s nationally recognized Rural Health Leaders Pipeline and offered in collaboration with Alabama Area Health Education Centers. AHECs were created by Congress in 1971 to increase the quantity, diversity and distribution of health care professionals, especially in rural and underserved areas.

Central Baldwin Education Foundation (CBEF)
Central Baldwin Education Foundation (CBEF) was created to encourage academic excellence in the Central Baldwin area schools by providing funding that is not available through traditional local, state or federal sources. The Foundation provides opportunities for teachers and staff to develop innovative projects through grants; to invest in programs and enrichment activities that have a positive impact on student success; to encourage a continued interest in and support of public education through a network of businesses, individual and community involvement; and to seek and cultivate funding sources for educational excellence. Each year, CBEF hosts two fundraisers, one of which is the Honeybee Festival & 5K in Robertsdale, AL. The Honeybee Festival has grown significantly throughout the past few years due to the tremendous community support and leadership from the Board of Directors. We’re looking forward to another great year! The two events will fund numerous teacher grants and scholarships for our feeder pattern. NBCEE Supports North Baldwin Schools
In 2008, a small group of dedicated individuals with a huge passion for education formed an organization called the North Baldwin Coalition for Excellence in Education (also known as NBCEE) as a way to support the schools in north Baldwin County and to supplement the programs offered by the school system. The organization and the work continues today with the same passion for education and a mission which it’s had from the very start - “to enhance the educational experience of all the students in the Bay Minette feeder pattern by providing financial support and other resources to supplement district wide programs.” NBCEE accomplishes this mission through three core focus areas – Teacher Grants, Summer Enrichment Camps, and Teacher of the Year recognitions. Since 2008, the Teacher Grant program has provided more than $120,000 to local teachers for a wide variety of creative and innovative classroom and school projects. And it is made possible because of a long-standing, truly collaborative relationship with our community organizations of Heritage Junior Women’s Club and Bay Minette Rotary Club, and our community members. These two organizations organize a popular annual community event, the Chilly Run/Chili Cook-off held each February at the Bay Minette Kid’s Park, where 1 mile and 5K runs are held, local businesses and schools compete for coveted awards and bragging rights, and community members gather to eat all-you-can-eat chili. The proceeds of the event go directly to benefit the NBCEE Teacher Grant Program. In the spring of each year, NBCEE accepts applications from teachers at each of the eight public schools in north Baldwin County. The applications are judged by an independent, objective and unbiased panel and winners are awarded their grant during an exciting, surprise “prize patrol” visit to their classroom in the last month of school. Each summer, NBCEE sponsors and organizes Summer Enrichment Camps for children of all ages, and to date, approximately 3,000 youngsters have attended an array of camps at several of our local school locations. Summer Camp offerings are posted on our website, www. nbcee.org, usually by the end of May each year. In March of each year, NBCEE recognizes each
of the Teachers of the Year from our eight schools at a Bay Minette City Council meeting. Through annual fundraising and sponsorships, NBCEE awards each of them with gift, along with a gift bag which is made possible by the generous donations from local businesses and community members. The North Baldwin Coalition for Excellence in Education foundation works with all eight schools to provide additional resources and enrichment opportunities for students and faculty, as well as annual Teacher Grant allotments. In addition, the education foundation sponsors summer camps for children ranging from conservation and engineering to sewing and cooking. To learn more about the North Baldwin Coalition for Education and our programs, to make a donation, apply for a sponsorship, or to get involved, visit our website at www. nbcee.org and like us on Facebook.

Baldwin County Education Coalition Making a Difference in the Baldwin County School System
The Baldwin County Education Coalition’s mission within the community is to engage community shareholders in public education and to advocate with one voice for the success of every child in Baldwin County. The Coalition is an independent, nonprofit, nonpartisan citizens’ organization who recognize education as the single best investment for economic prosperity and as the very core for addressing social challenges such as poverty and crime. The Coalition encompasses eight local education foundations that serve communities across Baldwin County, and is strengthened by the value brought to the communities and the shared vision for creating world class schools. The Coalition works collectively to increase the level of support for Baldwin County Public Schools by mobilizing financial and volunteer resources, as well as in-kind services. Highlights of these services include: • Providing program grants and funding that align with the district’s strategic plans for academics – close to $300,000 towards Guided Reading and The Leader in Me. • Inform, engage and connect citizens to our public schools to create awareness and support – 80 community meetings with 1,642 people informed. • Hosting Annual Gulf Regional Innovative Teaching Conference providing over 1,000 local educators with innovative professional development to increase competencies and strengthen instruction. • Hosting Annual Teacher of the Year Banquet to recognize each school’s (48) outstanding educator. • Advocate with a collective voice on issues concerning our public schools at the county and state levels – six referendums in nine years to stabilize funding for Baldwin Schools. Born out of need for emergency funding and recognizing the strength in a united voice, the Coalition was formed by the education foundations to advocate for a penny sales tax referendum. Our efforts to help stabilize funding for our public schools resulted in five referendums over a seven-year period with voters demonstrating a much better appetite for sales tax. The first full year of the penny tax brought in approximately $23.6 million in revenue in 2011, compared to $42.6 million in 2019. Each foundation provides programs and services to meet the specific needs of the schools in their local communities, while the Coalition focuses on systemic initiatives and best practices that improve student achievement and impact every child, hence our motto: One Voice. Every Child. Our collective impact is $1.2 million annually, much of which is made possible through the very generous support of the business community. One thing is certain, the Coalition remains united and will continue to mobilize resources to ensure little stars have bright futures. As always, we are Baldwin Proud and Community Strong! Summer is winding down and kids are preparing to start a new school year. This signifies an exciting new start for kids, but for parents, it can mean spending a lot of money on school supplies and new clothing for fall. Families with children in elementary school through high school plan to spend an average of $696.70 this year on back to school shopping. (National Retail Federation) That’s a lot of money, especially for parents of multiple children. How can you buy the items your kids need without breaking the bank on back to school shopping?
Here are some ways to save! Eastern Shore Parents I August 2021

Take inventory It doesn’t make sense to purchase items you already have around the house. “We reuse items like notebooks, binders, and pencil boxes.” says Carrie Miller, mom of three. “I also save all the pencils from class parties, birthday parties and other giveaways to use the following year.” Before you start back to school shopping, take inventory of what office and school supplies you already have that are new or gently used. Go through the kids closets and remove items that are two small and make a list of what needs to be replaced. Can any items be passed down to younger siblings? Consider shopping at second hand store or consignment sales for gently used items to save on clothes, shoes, and coats. Backpacks and lunchboxes that are in good condition can be reused. Once you know what you need, make a list of what needs to be purchased and stick to it.
Do your research It’s hard to know if you are getting a good deal on back to school supplies and clothing if you do know how much they cost to begin with. Once you know the average cost of an item it is easier to do your research and make sure you are getting a good deal. It can be easy to get caught up on saving on small items like glue and pencils, but it is wiser to focus on big ticket items which can mean more money saved. Saving $50-100 on a tablet is worth the effort of driving across town to shop compared to saving 10 cents on glue. “Shop around!” says Emily Rodriguez. “Last year I added all the items needed to my online cart at Walmart, Amazon and Target. I was surprised Target came out well under the other two. I was glad to save the money.”
Take advantage of discounts For retailers, back to school season is the biggest money maker, second only
to the Christmas shopping season. To bring in customers, they are willing to offer discounts, free shipping for online orders, price matching, in store coupons, and other deals to get you to shop in their stores. Take some time to shop around and find the best deals, sign up for email coupons and deals, and most importantly, don’t forget to use the coupons when you make your purchase. Many states, including Missouri, offer a tax free weekend in late summer. This is a great time for families to take advantage of a discount on clothing, shoes, and other items needed for school.
Buy later When you are looking at the long list of supplies that schools hand out, determine what they need right away and what can be purchased at a later time. You will be able to get school supplies at clearance prices if you simply wait until September. This is also a great time to stock up on commonly needed items for the following school year. “Purchase items in advance when possible.” says mom Fia Swartwood. “Clearance sales after school starts are a great time to stock up on paper, spiral notebooks, folders, and writing utensils.” Many families feel the need to buy their children a new fall wardrobe when school returns, but it’s perfectly reasonable to delay purchasing new clothing as temperatures are still too warm for fall and winter clothing when kids start school. This gives parents a chance to buy items over time or as needed instead of purchasing everything at once. “I shop clearance items after every season and guess on sizing for the following year.” says Katlyn Purkapile, mom of three.
what we treat
Leave the kids home As a mom of six, my biggest money saving tip for back to school shopping is to simply leave the kids home. I arrive at the store with a list of school supplies needed. If my daughter were with me she would ask for the sparkliest unicorn notebook, which costs twice as much as the plain pink one I would pick. It’s faster and more efficient if I shop for the supplies alone. When picking out clothes, back 41

packs, and lunchboxes, it’s reasonable to bring kids along so they can pick out something to fit their tastes. Prior to shopping, give your kids a set budget and let them pick something they like that fits within it. In order to save money you may have to put in some extra effort in research, take the time to get organized, drive to more than one store, and forgo a few items to stay within a budget. It will be worth the cost savings in the long run, especially for families shopping for multiple children.

Bonus: Packing Lunches on a Budget The cost of individually wrapped snacks and premade Lunchables can really add up. Here are some ideas to save money when you are packing school lunches this fall. • Buy items like crackers, cookies, and canned fruit in bulk and pack into individual size containers yourself. Doing this ahead of time can give you the convenience of the prepackaged items with big cost savings. • Replace disposable bags and containers with reusable items to pack sandwiches and sides. • Use leftovers. Make a little extra food for dinner and send healthy, homemade items to school for lunch. • Make your own “uncrustables” and “lunchables” rather than buying the premade version. “I’m bored,” my 11-year-old daughter grumbled as she collapsed on to the couch. It was a rare unscheduled moment in her life. I cringed as I recalled what can occur when she has a spontaneous second. At the age of three, I assumed she was quietly playing with her toys only to discover the entire wall was covered with a new crayon drawn mural. We are both happier now that she is enrolled in art classes. She prefers being busy, which is why she partook in six different extracurricular activities this past spring. Her interests ranged from sign language class to swim team. Besides avoiding boredom (and messes) there are many benefits to having scheduled activities for your child. Research by NCES states that students who participated in after-school activities had better attendance, higher levels of achievement, and aspirations to higher levels of education.
Better Academic Performance
Even though my daughter was in six different clubs or sports, she received all A’s in her academic classes. By participating in extracurricular activities, a child is able to learn new skills which can be applied to the school setting. For example, my daughter was in the garden club and she used the information she learned about plants in her science class. Sports such as basketball, baseball and football use statistics, addition/ subtraction, probability, and geometry which can be applied to math class. A number of research studies found students who participate in extracurricular activities perform better in school. Douglas Reeves studied data at Woodstock High School and found students who were in three or four extracurricular activities during
the year had dramatically better grades than those who participated in no extracurricular activities. There was a study done by the College Board, which found high school extracurricular participation is correlated with higher SAT scores, SAT math by 45 points and SAT verbal scores by 53 points.
More Adaptable
If a child is participating in more than one activity, they will also experience more than one coach or teacher who will have different rules and expectations. They will have the opportunity to meet kids with a range of personalities and interests. These interactions will teach a child how to be adaptable to multiple people and situations. Maddi and Deborah Khoshaba’s training guide, Resilience at Work, discussed the importance of being adaptable and how when adaptable people lose their jobs they thrive due to their ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Being adaptable is a skill that can be beneficial both in the school or work setting.
Better Social Skills
Children will gain social skills both from the person in charge of the activity or sport and by interacting with their peers. They also have the opportunity to learn about teamwork by either playing a sport together or doing a group class such as a musical for drama. In my daughter’s book club at the end of their discussion of the book, they have social time. During one meeting, she didn’t read the book, but she still wanted to go to the club since she loved the social interaction with her peers.
Less Screen Time
Common Sense Media research states that, on average, teens spend over nine hours per day playing video games or watching TV. If children are participating in after school activities they will have less opportunity to be absorbed by screens.
Decreased Risk of Obesity
According to the CDC, obesity affects about 12.7 million children and adolescents for the past decade. If a child participates in a sport they will be more active which leads to better health benefits from being physically fit. Even if a child joins a club or an after school activity, rather than a sport, they will be more active than if they watched TV or played video games.
How to Balance Your Child’s Schedule
Sometimes, even for my daughter, you can have too many activities. I’m always cognizant of her energy level. If she needs to skip an activity once in a while, I let her. Or when I noticed she wasn’t enthusiastic about going to gymnastics anymore, we both decided it would be best not to sign up for the next session. Most importantly you want to make sure your child is happy and definitely not bored. ESP Cheryl Maguire holds a Master of Counseling Psychology degree. She is married and is the mother of twins and a daughter. Her writing has been published in The New York Times, National Geographic, Washington Post, Parents Magazine, AARP, Healthline, Your Teen Magazine, and many other publications.

In the midst of my worst moments of anxiety and panic, I would focus incessantly on a physical sensation and fear that it was something serious and harmful. But, as I learned over time from several experts, my attention was directed on the wrong thing. What if I could shift my focus to something else—something more interesting and positive? As it turns out, scientists have discovered over the past several years the incredible power we have within ourselves to transform our brain, and therefore, our thoughts. In The WholeBrain Child, author Daniel J. Siegel M.D. explains how the brain physically changes in response to new experiences. “With intention and effort, we can acquire new mental skills. …when we direct our attention in a new way, we are actually creating a new experience that can change both the activity and ultimately the structure of the brain itself.” How does this work? Our new thoughts activate neurons in our brain, a process referred to as neural firing. This leads to the production of proteins that create new connections between neurons. So, with focused attention we can actually change the physical structure of our brain. This entire process is called neuroplasticity, a very exciting new realm of science that experts are trying to learn more about every day. Because our brain can change based on what we experience and focus on, we can alter the way we respond to and interact with the world around us. We can even reduce negative patterns and form new, healthier ones.
How We Can Change Our Brain
A collection of scientific evidence shows how focused attention can reshape our brain, Daniel J. Siegel points out. Brain scans of violinists, for example, show dramatic growth and expansion in regions of the cortex that represent the left hand, which is the main finger used to play the violin strings. Another study showed that the hippocampus, which is critical for spatial memory, is enlarged in taxi drivers. The magic of focused attention is that we can use it to help get over negative emotions like fear. We can redirect our attention towards something that relaxes us. “By directing our attention, we can go from being influenced by factors within and around us to influencing them. of the multitude of changing emotions and forces at work around us and within us, we can acknowledge them and even embrace them as parts of ourselves—but we don’t have to allow them to bully us or define us. We can shift our focus to other areas of awareness, so that we are no longer victims of forces seemingly beyond our control, but active participants in the process of deciding and affecting how we think and feel,” Siegel writes in his book. Fortunately, we have many effective tools to tap into to achieve more focus and create deep connections in our brain. We can use mindfulness meditation, yoga, Qi gong, breathing techniques, guided imagery, cognitive behavioral therapy, and even brain exercises to develop our focused attention. All of these approaches involve directing our attention to a specific object, image, sound, mantra, or even our own breath. In addition, Siegel developed a whole new technique called “Mindsight” to become mindful of all our mental activities, reorganize them, and then re-wire our brain. It goes a step further than mindfulness because it’s not just about being present in the moment, but about having the ability to monitor what’s going on and then to make a conscious change. This can have huge implications for those suffering from stress and anxiety.
Ways For Kids To Practice Focused Attention
Teaching our children this special trick of focused attention can help them in so many ways throughout their lives. By be-
ing aware of their emotions and learning how to shift their concentration, they will be empowered and feel in control of their thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations. From an early age, we can start to introduce some fun ways for kids to build up their focused attention muscle. Point out the positive. When faced with setbacks or unwelcome news, ask your children to find the positive in those situations. Paying attention to the positive rewires our brain for happiness and increases our awareness. Play listening and conversation games. Because of all their technology use, our children are missing out on really important skills like listening and how to hold an in-person conversation. Play games like whisper down the lane or verbal memory so that your kids can improve their ability to listen carefully. Creative arts. When our children are immersed in art—whether it be music, painting, writing, or drawing—they reach a state of flow, the sense of being completely engaged in an activity to the point of being in a near meditative state. When we are in a state of flow, we forgot about all our thoughts and lose track of time. Sign your kids up for an art class or music lesson, encourage them to spend time journaling, and bring out the karaoke machine to get them focused through creativity. Mindful play. Choose toys and games that require your children’s full attention,
such as spinning tops, dominoes, building a house of cards, brain teasers, or board games like Operation and Memory. Breathing exercises. One of the most basic and commonly used meditation approaches is deep breathing, which has been found to help return our breathing back to normal and alleviate unsettling feelings of stress and anxiety. Practice breathing exercises with your children so they can learn how to do it on their own when they are stressed. Yoga practice. Yoga offers so many incredible benefits to our children including a time for inner focus and to connect to their bodies. Enjoy doing poses together as a family and showing your kids that they can tap into the skills learned during yoga throughout their day to address the pressures and stress they endure. Enjoy nature scenes. Focusing on aweinspiring scenes of nature—whether in person or through pictures and videos—can engage our children’s attention. Schedule some outdoor time or sit down and watch a nature show or enjoy gorgeous photographs of our natural environment. Teach your children that just sitting quietly and staring at these images is relaxing and a helpful focus exercise. ESP Sandi Schwartz is a freelance journalist and mother of two. cybermaniac comes up with a dastardly plan: kidnap the son of LeBron James and force the NBA megastar to take on his digital team. Once again, Zoey and Ben find themselves trapped in another Minos escape room – this one starting off in an innocent-looking subway car. As in the first film, characters face extreme peril and violent deaths. Between the violence and profanity, this film is unsuited to family viewing. It’s also poorly written with flat dialogue and even flatter characters, rendering it unsuitable for anyone who enjoys interesting cinema. Photo ©Columbia Pictures

When the consequences of her past life as a spy entangle her in a dangerous conspiracy, Natasha Romanoff must deal with the relationships she thought she had left behind. Like other Marvel features, Black Widow has lots of violent action pieces and minimal sexual content. The writing is less polished than other films in the franchise, but adult and teen fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe will probably enjoy watching Natasha’s backstory. Photo ©Disney+

After her father’s writings run afoul of the Nazis, nine year old Anna’s family goes on the run, first to Switzerland and then to Paris. Less a historical depiction of the rise of fascism and more an examination of the daily life of refugees, this touching film brings history alive for young viewers, with strong messages of resilience, persistence, courage, and integrity. Sadly the movie is subtitled, so viewers must be willing to read as they watch.

Is Your Home Lead Safe?
Most children get lead poisoning from paint in homes built before 1978. Keep paint in good repair and use a certified lead contractor to safely perform home renovations if your home was built before 1978. A blood lead test is the only way to know if your child has lead poisoning. Talk with your child’s doctor about testing, especially at the 1- and 2-year check-up, when children are at greatest risk. Lead poisoning can cause permanent learning and behavior problems. Follow these steps to stop lead poisoning: • Practice and teach good handwashing, especially before preparing food and eating. • Feed your family a low-fat diet high in calcium and iron. • Damp dust and mop, especially around windows and play areas, to remove lead dust. • Keep children away from areas with peeling or chipping paint.

Bless Them, Just Don’t Enable Them Q. My husband and I are both teachers, and we’re on Baby Step 7. We’re struggling with things where our wills are concerned. Three of our four adult children aren’t being wise with their money, and my husband and I disagree on how to talk to them about it and how it may affect us re-structuring our wills. We don’t want to be judgmental, but at the same time we agree something needs to be said or done. A. Let’s say someone is working at my company, and taking my money in the form of a paycheck. Let’s also say this person isn’t doing a good job. If I don’t talk to them about their performance because I don’t want to be seen as judgmental, I’m not doing my job. I owe them the feedback necessary for them to become a good team member. Otherwise, they could just get fired one day without really knowing what

happened because I refused to “judge” them. There’s a big difference between judging people and being judgmental. But it’s unkind not to share insights or suggestions for a better way of life with those you love most. Holding back and telling yourself the way someone behaves is just the way they’re made is wrong in most instances. Overspending and not saving money aren’t character traits— they’re decisions. They’re adults now, and they’re going to do what they want. They don’t have to understand or support your ways of handling money, but you and your husband have every right to tell them they have to start behaving in certain ways if they expect to receive your money when the time comes. If they’re misbehaving, and you give them money,

you’re funding that bad behavior. That’s not love, that’s enabling. And a big pile of money isn’t going to heal the bad things— it’s only going to magnify them. Sit down with your kids, and have a loving, clear discussion about the situation. Remind them that they’re adults, and you and your husband are no longer able to tell them how they have to live. But let them know in no uncertain terms, gently but firmly, they will not receive your money if they continue to behave in ways you both consider foolish or unreasonable. Let them know they’ll always have your love, just not your money, unless they begin behaving more intelligently and maturely with their finances. You can’t make them do anything, but you can ensure they understand you two won’t be sharing your wealth with people who can’t handle it and use it wisely.
