School is out, summer vacation is finally here and my family is more than ready to rock this summer! From the looks of my social media accounts, the rest of you are too! After a year of limitations, places being closed, and mask mandates, getting out and having a very social summer seems to be top priority for everyone. My feeds are filled with families heading out to Disney, the beach, and various other destinations to make up for last summer. It is great to see everyone enjoying such happy times. While scrolling through social media is fun, if we don’t watch ourselves we can soon get caught up in thinking our vacation, holiday event, or party does not “measure up”. As parents, this is a common struggle. We often question our parenting and wonder if our best is enough. Sarah Lyons helps us navigate this struggle in When Your Best Doesn’t Feel Like Enough on page 48. It is common to compare someone else’s family vacation with your own, but when you really break it down, the best memories are often made during the simplest of times. We still laugh that the one time we went to Disney our kids kept asking to go back to the hotel pool, yet when we talk about our favorite vacation it was a simple trip to the beach where we played board games all night and laughed until we cried. Nothing can compare to great family memories like that and that is what is most important. The time spent, not the money spent. So what kind of fun activities are you looking forward to this summer? If you are looking for some family fun close to home then make sure you check out the Summer Fun Guide on page 52. Here you will find an extensive list of area amusement parks, zoos, bowling alleys, skating rinks, libraries, and many more summer outing suggestions. One of my favorite summer activities growing up was Vacation Bible School and I could not wait for my kids to join in on the fun once they were old enough. They loved it too. So much so that they were sad when they aged out. If your family also gets excited about VBS or if you are looking to try it out for the first time, you will find the Vacation Bible School Guide on page 50. And if all of those activities are not enough to keep you busy, then you will want to turn to the Family Calendar on page 64. Not only are we celebrating summer this month, but also celebrating dads. Maybe the dad you are celebrating would enjoy a family outing or he may just be looking forward to a nice, peaceful day napping in a hammock. However he would like to spend his day, make sure to recognize him for all of his contributions. In Dads Rock, Christa Melnyk Hines spotlights the important impact dads and father figures can have on families. Speaking of special dads, I want to thank my dad, my husband, and my father-inlaw for all the love and support they give my family. It means the world to me! And to all of the other dads and father figures out there, Happy Father’s Day to you too!

“What’s the Big Deal... I Just Get a Little Mad” I spend my days hearing concerned parents say, “This child has an anger problem.” That statement is almost always followed by a child saying, “I just get a little mad.” I then proceed to ask the parents several questions. 1. How do they display their anger (crying, tantrums, aggression)? 2. How long does the episode last? 3. Can you tell me the entire story of the last time they were angry (before, during, after)? The answers to these questions determine what we do next. Sometimes intense displays of anger require the help of a professional because the child needs to be clinically evaluated. Most of the time, the child simply does not have the skill of emotional regulation. Emotional regulation is when we deal with negative emotions in a healthy manner. The process of learning emotional regulation is lifelong. No human has perfectly mastered this difficult skill. Let’s be honest, we adults are not always the best models of it. I am far from having this skill mastered. A few years ago, my most important goal for a family
trip to NYC was to take the subway out to Coney Island, ride the Cyclone, and eat a Coney Dog. Unfortunately, the Pope was visiting and the UN was in session, so normal transit routes were altered. After trying several routes with no success, I sat down on the floor of a Brooklyn subway stop and cried. I should have been able to control my own disappointment over such a silly thing, but in that moment, I failed and failed miserably. Despite my emotional regulation disaster, my family was able to look past my meltdown, go to Coney Island, and make a beautiful memory. We have all experienced an eruption of our child’s negative feelings. This can look like “a spoiled child”, “bad behavior”, or an “emotional problem”. The simple truth is, they do not have the ability to stay emotionally regulated in hard moments. Here are some tips on how to teach your children this important skill. 1. Help them memorize the names and definitions of basic emotions. Do this through books, facial expressions, songs, videos, etc.
2. Instead of punishing an emotional outburst, have them repeatedly practice an appropriate response. Practice is the best teacher. 3. Make sure you are modeling appropriate behaviors when you react to life’s ups and downs. 4. Ensure you are encouraging everything that is positive. Kids who have anger issues sometimes feel over corrected or over criticized. They may not be, it may only be their perception. 5. After an outburst, laugh with them about their anger. There is a definite art form to this, but it is important to teach children to laugh at and learn from their mistakes. 6. Use a video from the internet to show an example of a tantrum, talk about how silly it is, and practice an appropriate response. 7. Be careful and say “no” only when necessary. Do not make a habit of changing your “no” to “yes”. 8. Let your children have their emotions (you have no control over it anyway). Just make sure you are not reinforcing their outbursts by giving into them for your own comfort or to avoid your own embarrassment. In life’s difficult moments be loving and wise. Sometimes the best response is to ignore the outburst, hail a cab, and go to Coney Island.

Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama Shows Appreciation for Hometown Heroes
Strength, resilience, togetherness, and the support of the community—that’s what Girl Scouts of Southern Alabama is all about. This is why they believe what better way to show community support and say thank you than through our Hometown Heroes program. We all know Girl Scout Cookies are yummy and mouthwatering, and who better to share them with than the men and women who proudly serve. With Hometown Heroes you can support different causes at the same time—a girl-led cookie business, active military personnel, teachers, local first responders, healthcare workers, and other non-profit organizations that are making a difference every day. With the help of the community, GSSA has donated over 11,160 boxes of cookies in the Mobile and surrounding areas. GSSA also made a very special delivery of 42,432 packages to Soldiers’ Angels, which will go to the troops overseas. "Our thoughts are with all of those working hard to keep our community healthy and thriving, says Karlyn Edmonds, GSSA CEO. "We hope that these cookies help spread a little positivity and cheer in the Wiregrass and to our fellow men and women overseas."

Megan Stewart Earns Girl Scout Gold Award
Baldwin County High School senior Megan Stewart has earned the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award available within the organization. Megan has been a Girl Scout with Troop 8306 in Bay Minette for 13 years. She earned her Bronze Award while in the 5th Grade at Delta Elementary as a Junior Scout and her Silver Award while in the 7th grade at Bay Minette Elementary as a Cadette Scout. On Saturday, March 13, she received her Girl Scout Gold Award. Megan began the process to earn her Gold Award when she became a freshman at Baldwin County High School while serving as a Senior Scout. She had to come up with a project and go before the Gold Award Committee to show where her project would meet five key elements: root cause, leadership, measurability, sustainability and national/global link. For her Gold Award project, Megan built an outdoor classroom at Camp Sid Edmond’s which is the Girl Scout camp located in Bay Minette. The outdoor classroom is a way that a large troop or multiple troops can sit together to work on projects or badges. She also incorporated a safety shed into the instructor’s platform to house all the swimming safety equipment. Megan’s original plan was to hold badge classes for the Cadette Wood Worker Badge. Due to Covid-19 and the restrictions that were set in place, she had to create a YouTube video of the class. Because the video is on YouTube any Cadette Scout in any troop or area of the world can follow the video and earn this badge. The link to her video is: https: youtu.be/rhxTTPtwHEI Megan is now an Ambassador Scout and senior at Baldwin County High School. She will be graduating in May and will be enlisting in the US Navy. Her future goal is to become an ER doctor. Megan is the daughter of Christine and Chip Stewart of Bay Minette. Her brother Charlie is an Eagle Scout who graduated from Baldwin County High School in 2019 and is a member of the US Navy.

Spanish Fort High School and Bayside Academy Students Win Chelsea Garvin Spirit Scholarships
The Original Oyster House awarded its 15th Annual Chelsea Garvin Spirit Scholarships to Carolina Triboni of Spanish Fort High School and Hannah Weiland of Bayside Academy. Triboni will study painting and drawing at Auburn University and Weiland will study architecture at Auburn University in the fall. In 2006, the scholarship was founded in loving memory of Chelsea Garvin, who was an exceptional employee, a volunteer Fish River Fire Department Rescue Diver and a talented artist. Tragically at age 19, Chelsea lost her life in a boating accident while volunteering. It’s called a spirit scholarship to encourage awarding a recipient who reflects the spirit of Chelsea. And both winners this year absolutely did. Triboni’s submitted artwork received the most votes from the scholarship committee, her application was engaging and her contribution of a 4-foot wall mural, her parting gift to the Spanish Fort High School art room, will inspire students for years to come. Weiland’s leadership as art guild president and Azimuth Circle designer as well as her role as yearbook editor confirmed she doesn’t hold back on her time or talent. The winning artworks will be displayed in both Original Oyster House locations for patrons and tourists to enjoy. The winners were given $1,000 each as well as restaurant gift certificates to see first-hand their artwork with family and friends.

26 Students Graduate from Eastern Shore Chamber’s Youth Leadership Program
Twenty-six local sophomores, juniors & seniors have graduated from the Eastern Shore Chamber’s Youth Leadership Program, an intensive seven-month program designed to develop and expand leadership skills by empowering students through seminars, workshops, hands-on activities, team building, community engagement and introductions to community leaders. Students received their graduation certificates Monday, May 19, 2021 at Daphne United Methodist Church. Throughout the program, students explore topics including law and government, business smarts, health and human services and the environment. Other activities include retreats and community service hours. “2020’s adversities created a leadership lesson itself for our program and its students,” said Eastern Shore Chamber Director of Workforce Development Christina Hellmich. “Because the pandemic forced us to alter the program, students were given the opportunity to learn leadership skills in a crisis situation.” Students work as teams to develop small group projects that address key issues they identify in the community, which they presented during graduation. “My favorite thing from this program is the opportunity I had to work with other leaders in my community to learn and practice the different ways that a person can successfully lead a group,” said graduate Ally Mavar. Students in the program select one individual student who stands out by showcasing the qualities of a leader throughout the program. The 2021 winner of the Spirit of Youth Leadership Award goes to Spanish Fort High School Junior Ford Turnipseed. The Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce would like to congratulate the 2021 class for their achievements: Frances Barnes, Caroline Beech, Avery Bramblett, Lyndsey Byrd, Nolan Crawford, Wilson Engeriser, Jacob Fontenot, Cameron Herzog, Ella Kate Hewes, Leighanne Higgins, Anna Hartsel Hope, Sarah Jones, Ally Mavar, McKenna McBee, Johanna Olvera, Belle Myrick, Abby Ott, LK Peacock, Kacey Porter, Madeline Shipman, Ellie Smith, Mary Everett Toombs, Noah Trull, Ford Turnipseed, Ben VanderHeydenk, Edward Witherington. The Eastern Shore Chamber would like to thank the Chamber Foundation’s Workforce Sponsor, Daphne Utilities, Graduation Sponsor Riviera Utilities and Program Sponsors Bayside Academy, Baldwin County Board of Education and Hot Wheel’s Skate Center. Poison Prevention and Your Home Did you know that more than 1.2 million children under the age of six swallow or come into contact with a poisonous substance every year! And that’s only the known and reported cases! As we have discussed before, a large portion of pediatrics is in prevention of illnesses, and poison prevention can be an easy way to reduce harm to your child. Today, we will talk about what is poisonous, some basic strategies on storage of medicines and other chemicals, as well as what to do if your child does ingest or get exposed to a poison. First, let’s talk about what some potential poisons are and where they are most likely to be found. First are medications. Prescription medicines are very common in homes and can be among the most dangerous. One of the most serious cases of medicine poisoning I saw was while in my residency, and involved an 18 month old child that ingested several different types of blood pressure and depression medications and had to be monitored in the ICU for days. When asked about the location of the medications, we found out they were “kept” on an end table by a recliner for easy access by grandma! But, other non-prescription medications are potentially dangerous as
Eastern Shore Parents I June 2021
well. Ibuprofen, aspirin, acetaminophen, vitamins, cold and cough medicines are all possibly dangerous when ingested by a child. But medicines aren’t the only danger. Paint, varnishes, cleaning supplies, and pesticides count, as does gasoline and other car care products. Other poisons include mothballs, weed killers, pest killers and older medications such as oil of wintergreen and camphor-based oils, and fumes from chemicals, space heaters or stoves. So what now? I put child safety locks on my cabinets, that’s good enough right? No! You know as well as I do that toddlers are quite amazing and how many times have you walked into your kitchen and found a “child-proofed” cabinet wide open? My best recommendation is to completely remove all of the above objects from reach. That means putting them in the garage or a high cabinet or the top of the closet and not under the sink. Also, when it comes to medicines, try to avoid calling medicine “candy” in an effort to get your child to take it. This opens the door for increased ingestion. Also, be aware of where your child is being cared for. While grandparents and other caregivers are a wonderful asset to have, the risk of accidental ingestion is increased at these locations.
14
OK, my child just took a swig of bleach or took a few baby aspirin that were lying on the counter. What do I do? If your child is unconscious, not breathing, or possibly having a seizure, then call 911 immediately. Do not give ipecac or any other medicine to induce vomiting. If it is a spill on the skin or in the eyes, then remove any clothing or hats and rinse for 15 minutes under tepid water. Do not apply any lotions or medicines to the skin or eyes. If it is an inhalation, then take your child outside into fresh air immediately and observe for respiratory distress. If your child is OK, then call 1-800-222-1222, which is the Poison Control Center. They will ask you questions about what your child took, so it is helpful to have the medication bottle in front of you. Sometimes, they will give advice over the phone, sometimes they will advise to go to the emergency department. Good luck and be vigilant! Robert L. Rux, M.D. is a Board Certified Pediatrician at Magnolia Springs Pediatrics. Originally from Mobile, he attended medical school at The University of Alabama School of Medicine (UAB) and completed residency at The Children’s Hospital of Alabama (UAB). ASMS Senior Becomes Only Cooke Scholar in State
Alabama School of Mathematics and Science (ASMS) senior Anna Peeples from Baldwin County has been named a 2021 Cooke College Scholar and is the only recipient from Alabama. The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation announced that 61 graduating high school seniors will receive the Cooke College Scholarship out of a pool of 5,800 applicants. The Cooke Foundation selected Scholars based on their academic ability, persistence, leadership, and financial need. As a Cooke College Scholar, Anna will receive up to $40,000 annually to cover costs associated with undergraduate education along with ongoing educational advising from Foundation staff and access to a network of active Scholars and Alumni. She will also receive opportunities for internships, study abroad, and access to graduate school funding. In the fall, Anna plans to attend Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania where she will study public health policy. “This scholarship will help me pursue higher education without the fear of the financial burden that comes with college. I am looking forward to the emotional and academic support the foundation offers their scholars to help them excel,” says Anna. During her time at ASMS, Anna co-founded a youth advocate risk prevention and education group for high school students under AIDS Alabama South (named TARP), conducted research and authored an article on the current sex education laws in Alabama, served as a National Youth HIV/AIDS Awareness Day Ambassador, completed an internship as a Teen Advocate for Sexual Health, and served as president of the Allies Club at ASMS. “Anna has been a committed advocate and scholar throughout her time at ASMS. She has consistently embraced opportunities to learn, educate, raise awareness, and equip others. We are proud to see that the Cooke Foundation has recognized Anna’s excellence and dedication by investing in her very bright future,” says Dr. John Hoyle, President of ASMS.

Every year Fairhope High seniors vote on prom king and queen. This year history was made as Fairhope High had their first African American couple win. Jaylin Bracy and Maryann Miller expressed what winning prom king and queen and what making history for Fairhope High School means to them. Prom King Jaylin Bracy stated that ¨being able to win Prom King 2021 of Fairhope High School was so honorable to me. It was a very seizable moment for me because I had no idea so many people had love for me. Throughout my senior year, I always told myself to kill my fellow peers with kindness no matter what and it totally paid off in the end. When Coach Berry paused for that long second, my nerves were terrible, but as soon as he announced my name and I heard the crowd go happily insane, the feeling of shock took over my body and I could do nothing but drop my jaw and freeze! I could not believe he had said my name. I always used to have mixed emotions about Fairhope High School, but ever since winning king on prom night, Fairhope has extremely shown me where my home will always be!¨ Prom Queen Maryann Miller exclaimed, ¨if I’m being honest I didn’t really think I would win, but boy was I shocked when Coach Berry called my name. The anticipation was the worst part because he took FOREVER to announce the queen. I have been on the homecoming court every year since I was a freshman and when the time came to announce homecoming queen, I didn’t get it. I was happy to be selected by my peers to get another chance to become a queen. Prom was a night to remember and a memory that I will cherish the rest of my life knowing I made history at Fairhope High School.” We are so proud of Jaylin and Maryann for making history at Fairhope High School and for being amazing students and citizens. Congratulations to the 2021 prom court and the King and Queen! (Article and photo by Josie Conway.)

Peruse the greeting card section around Father’s Day and you’ll find the shelves bursting with stereotypes about dads. While we may love to poke fun at his expense, we have more reasons to appreciate dear old Dad besides how handy he is with a wrench. Supportive dads and father figures positively influence a child’s development. Here’s how.
Emphasize education. Fa-
Did you know? •Fathers, who help around the house, are more likely to raise daughters who envision a broader range of possible career options for themselves. Fatherhood is linked to lower blood pressure, lower rates of heart disease and longevity. Fathers, who help with caregiving, feel more patient, empathetic and flexible.

They also jump in during the lunch hour to help peel open those stubborn half-pint cartons of milk, offer clean-up assistance, and dine with their kids. “Eating lunch with your son or daughter offers a unique insight into your kids’ friends and what they talk about, what they think is funny and how innocent their minds are,” Clark says. Some dads even stick around

But most importantly, I believe it is vital for Model healthy relationships. worthy of being loved,” says psychologist and researcher Omri Gillath, Ph.D., University of Kansas. Research suggests that children, especially boys, who have a positive relationship with their fathers are more likely to have higher quality romantic relationships as they enter adulthood, Gillath adds. Both boys and girls, who experience positive relationships with their dads, are also less likely to engage in first-time risky behaviors like substance abuse and premature, unsafe sex.
What if Dad is absent? For many families, dads simply aren’t in the picture either due to divorce, death or other reasons. Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t raise a well-adjusted child. According to the 2016 Census Bureau, while the majority of children live in two-parent homes, 23 percent are being raised by single mothers. Single moms can give their children the benefit of a father figure by seeking male role models within their extended family, at school, or in the community. “There are good dads and men in the public eye, too, who you can point to and talk about what makes them admirable and a role model,” Limbert says.
Teach emotional management. Boys can learn how to manage emotions like anger from their fathers while girls can gain self-confidence and the expectation that they deserve to be treated with respect. “It’s important for fathers to be okay expressing and allowing a full range of emotions from both their daughters and sons,” says parent coach Tom Limbert, author of Most Valuable Dad. “By acknowledging and allowing vulnerability, anger, sadness in yourself and in your children, you open up a supportive dialogue that will help children grow to have healthy relationships and emotional well-being.” Fathers also teach their youngsters socialization skills and self-control through rough-and-tumble play like playful wrestling, tumbling, and chasing. This kind of rough-housing, especially with their sons, encourages kids to take risks, learn how to manage back and forth interactions and recognize body language

cues like when rough play should end.
Enhance empathy. Outside of their school life, Clark connects with his children through sports activities like coaching his oldest son’s baseball team, volunteering with community organizations like the March of Dimes and the American Heart Association, and by spending leisure time
together. “We enjoy being outside as a family, whether that is taking bike rides, attending sporting events or enjoying community events,” Clark says. Researchers at McGill University, found that children raised by attentive, actively involved fathers exhibited higher levels of empathy as adults. “The best things dads can do is to simply be present and offer their attention and interest in their children,” Limbert says. “Obviously it would be helpful to be empathetic and supportive as well, but primarily—without complicating it —it’s all about being present and engaged.” ESP Freelance journalist Christa Melnyk Hines’ husband Jason is a fantastic dad to their two school-age sons. What’s the Best Game Console for Kids? If your kids are at the age where you’re considering buying a game console, now might be the right time. Whether you want the immersive virtual reality of the Sony PlayStation or the portability of the Nintendo Switch, today’s consoles offer more realism, interactivity, and flexibility than ever before. The question still remains: Which console is best for your family’s needs?
Best for Families with Young Kids: Nintendo Switch/Switch Lite With games such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Super Mario Party, and Ring Fit Adventure, as well as cool activity packs such as the Labo Toy-Con Variety Kit, Nintendo maintains its position as the best option for families to use together. The Switch works both as a stationary console that plugs into your TV and a portable gaming device with two built-in controllers and a touchscreen. The recently released Switch Lite, on the other hand, uses the same games as the Switch, but it’s strictly a portable station that’s designed only for gaming on the go. While the Switch library does offer its share of mature games, the consoles include parental controls so you can help your kids regulate their use. Check out the Best Nintendo Switch Games for Kids.
Best for Tweens and Families: Microsoft Xbox One S and Sony PlayStation 4 These may be the basic systems from Microsoft and Sony, but they’re still very powerful and run all of the games that you can get your hands on. One of Eastern Shore Parents I June 2021
the big advantages is that you can often find these machines bundled with a few games to play along with the system. Xbox One S is a better choice for families who already own a lot of Xbox games, as it will play some Xbox 360 titles. If you’re tired of discs cluttering things up, consider the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition console which stores all your games in the cloud. The PS4, by contrast, provides access to older PS3 games through its digital store and its PS Now service. Of course, violent games such as Resident Evil 3, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Wolfenstein: Youngblood are available for each, but so are family-friendly titles such as The Lego Marvel Collection, Madden NFL 21, and The Jackbox Party Pack 7. Plus, both systems contain parental controls with customizable family settings to control screen time and purchase limits, as well as content filters to block inappropriate games for kids.
Best for Tweens, Teens, and Serious Gamers:
Microsoft Xbox Series X, Microsoft Xbox Series S, Sony PlayStation 5, Sony PlayStation Pro, Sony PlayStation VR If your kids are really passionate about games, then these machines are the best -- if not the only -- choices. At the high end of the price range and advanced features are the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5, which are ultrafast and provide super-realistic graphics. 46
Microsoft unveiled two systems in November 2020: the Xbox Series X, and the smaller Series S. While both can play the latest titles, the Series S was designed to be all-digital -- without a disc drive -- while the Series X was designed to be the most powerful game console ever made. Both benefited from Microsoft’s dedication to backward compatibility, meaning any game bought for any Microsoft console can be played on either machine. Check out our favorite Xbox Series X/S Games for Kids. Sony’s most powerful system to date, the PlayStation 5, launched in November 2020, as well, becoming one of the most sought-after systems that holiday season. It could play both PlayStation 4 games and the latest releases for the system, and could present visuals in 4K resolution, meaning players received jaw-dropping visuals as they played the latest releases. Keep in mind that, though there are plenty of games for each console designed for tweens and younger, the vast majority of Xbox and PlayStation games are intense and mature. But there are still plenty of titles to get players’ hearts pumping, whether it’s the manic rhythm of Just Dance 2021, the off-road racing of Dirt 5, or the stadium-rocking noise of FIFA 21. Sony has the edge for virtual reality with its PlayStation VR headset designed to work with the PS4 and PS4 Pro. PSVR provides a totally immersive, virtual reality game experience. There’s a number of impressive games for the headset, like the anti-bullying-themed Concrete Genie, the colorful and entertaining links of Everybody’s Golf VR, and the soaring adventure of Falcon Age. For more game suggestions, take a look at our list of Thought-Provoking and Nonviolent Games for Tweens and Teens, Nonviolent Games for PS4, Nonviolent Games for Xbox One, and the best video games for teens. www.easternshoreparents.com

Parents want to do the best they can when it comes to their kids. The majority of our time and effort goes towards supporting and taking care of our children. We work hard to make sure our kids are happy and healthy. Why do we often end up feeling like our best efforts still aren’t enough?
Here are some tips that can change your perspective and help you realize that you are enough for your kids. Stop the comparisons The biggest trap parents fall into is comparing yourself to others. This is unfair because no two parents are the same and no family situation or child is the same. What works for you may not work for another family and each family’s values, dynamic, and interests are different. Because of this, comparisons are not worth worrying over. In the age of social media, it can be hard not to think everyone has a picture-perfect life but it’s important to remember that social media only shows you a picture, often staged and filtered, and is not a true reflection of their daily lives.
Reality check Sometimes we all need to give ourselves a reality check. Remember, all siblings have conflict, all kids throw tan-
trums, all houses get messy, and all parents get tired. Things are never perfect for anyone. It is wise to remember this when you start to get down about a situation that is making you feel like you aren’t enough. Reaching out to a friend, you will often find that they too experience similar situations. It is nice to have the camaraderie that comes from knowing that they are experiencing the same battles in their life too.
Do what you love Some people are great at interior design, some love craft projects, others have culinary skills, and still others are efficient and organized. We may strive to be the best at all of these things to our families, but it usually doesn’t work out that way. Focus on what you love and enjoy those things with your family. There is no reason to beat yourself up over things you do not enjoy. Sometimes when I feel like my best is not enough it is because I put too many expectations on myself. I do not enjoy craft projects, so why do I feel the need to do them with my kids? I do enjoy cooking and having my kids help me. If I choose the activity I enjoy more, my kids get quality time with me that we both enjoy. Be honest with yourself about your expectations for your kids and for yourself.
49
Do your best with what you have and enjoy it along the way.
Count your blessings One way to change your perspective from negative to positive is to start counting your blessings. It is so easy to focus on negatives when the great things going on in your life are passing you by. Start by listing five blessings per day. Write them down. When you are feeling down go back and read them and you will most likely feel an attitude boost in no time.
Your child loves you One of the most important things to remember is that your kids love you. Even when you are tired, overworked, overlooked, and feel like your best is not enough, your kids will love you anyway. They love spending time with you. They love your gifts and quirks. They may not always act appreciative or show their love in an obvious way, but they do love you. The consistency, support, and love that you show them every day does not go to waste. It is enough. Whether across the country or just across town, moving is a big adjustment for everyone in the family. Children, in particular, can feel overwhelmed and uprooted because they are rarely in control of the decision to change homes, neighborhoods, or schools.
Here are some tips to help parents support their kids through the transition. Eastern Shore Parents I June 2021

play spaces. Some kids may enjoy decorating or adding new pieces to their room while others prefer keeping the familiar things from the previous home.
Talk it over
As early as possible, start preparing your child for the move by letting them know where, when, and why you are making the move. Let them know you understand that this may be upsetting or scary to them, but it is also an exciting and a fun adventure you will do together. Give them the opportunity to talk through their feelings and make sure they know they have permission to be sad, angry, excited, or scared, sometimes all at the same time!
Take a tour
When house hunting try to involve kids as much as possible. This will help them feel a part of the decision. Let them tour possible homes with you and give their opinions. If this is not possible, let them be a part of the decisions after you have it narrowed down to a few contenders. Give them the chance to pick their bedroom and
Maintain routines
Once the move is complete, it is important to maintain similar routines as in the previous house. This will help kids feel safer in their new environment. Parents should also be aware that regression in potty training, behavior, and sleep are totally normal for kids to go through when they are experiencing significant transitions in their lives. Try to be consistent and patient while they adjust to their new surroundings.
Foster friendships
One of the most positive things about
63
moving is the opportunity to make new friends. Parents can make moving easier by helping their kids meet new people. Host a playdate, get involved in sports or other activities, take a plate of cookies to the neighbors, and introduce yourself to other families at the neighborhood park. It can be hard for kids (and parents) to step out of their comfort zone, but once you have made some friends and acquaintances it is easier to feel at home in a new place. Parents should also encourage their children to continue friendships from their previous home as much as possible. Just because there is more distance between friends does not mean the relationship has to end. Moving is a challenge not just for the kids but for the parents too. Try to set an example for your kids by acknowledging sad feelings while keeping a positive attitude and embracing your new neighborhood. It can also help to explain that while the place you live may change, the important things won’t - your family will be together and you will always love each other no matter where you live. ESP

Spending, Saving & Giving Q. I was talking to a friend the other day, and I couldn’t remember what you said about the three good uses for money and why each is important. Would you go over them again? A. I’ve been doing this for a lot of years, and after all that time studying finance and teaching people about money, I can still find only three good uses for money— spending, saving, and giving. You should be doing all three while you’re working your way out of debt and towards wealth, and after you become wealthy. The kid in us likes the spending part of this equation, because it’s so much fun. The problem with most people is they can’t really afford the fun they have. You should have some fun no matter where you are on the financial scale, but it should be inexpensive fun in the beginning. Then,
the fun can get bigger, better, and more frequent once you’re out of debt and building wealth. The grown-up part of us likes investing and saving, because that’s what can prepare you for retirement and make you wealthy. After a while, though, investing can feel a little bit like Monopoly. You can be up, or you can be down. Sometimes the market fluctuates, but a mature investor will ride out the waves and stay in for the long-term. If you have quality investments with long track records of success, they will come back up. Start investing 15% of your income for retirement once you’ve paid off all debt except for your home and
you have three to six months of expenses saved for an emergency fund. The most mature part of you will meet the kid inside when you give. Giving is the most fun you’ll ever have with money. Every financially, mentally, and spiritually healthy person I’ve ever met has been turned on by giving. I’ve met and talked with thousands of millionaires in my career, and one thing all the healthy ones have in common is a love of giving. Someone who never has fun with money misses the point. Someone who never saves or invests money will never have any. And someone who never gives is holding on too tight. Do some of each, and enjoy the ride!
