As I mentioned a few months ago, cleaning out and organizing our attic space has been on our to-do list for a hot minute. Well, I am proud to say we finally have a well-organized space, at least for now. What started as a daunting task was a really fun trip down memory lane. We found all sorts of homemade ornaments, childhood toys, and crafts the girls made in school. It filled my heart. One of my most favorite items is a storybook the girls made me that had cutout photos of us put into a fairytale story. The pictures of me were horrible, but I could not love it any more if I tried. I don’t think children understand the joy that a parent gets when they receive a heartfelt, handmade gift from a child. Even now that our children are older, I still encourage them, and even Brad, to write me a note, draw me a picture, or make me something rather than spend money on me. To me, the thought behind the gift is what makes it a cherished item. With that in mind, I enjoyed this month’s feature by Sarah Lyons, Gifts Kids Can Give on a Small Budget. She shares with us some super cute ideas that have a personal touch. Now that the holiday season is in full swing, I was excited to pull out the Christmas décor! I tend to decorate the inside of my home the same way every year. The front porch, however, is a different story. That décor depends on what plants may or may not have survived this long in my planters. I try to take photos so I can look back at the hits and misses so I don’t have to rethink it every year. While looking back on the photos, I naturally ran across some pics of the family during the holidays. I found pictures from the annual Knighton Family Ginger Bread House contest, dinners with family, and even photos of the girls all sleeping in the same bed on Christmas Eve, a tradition they refuse to give up. Yes, another sappy moment that warmed this momma’s heart. Does your family have some tried and true traditions for your celebrations? Whether you have a young family just starting with holiday traditions or have older kids and are looking to add to your holidays, Kimberly Blaker has some great suggestions in her feature, Holiday Traditions For You and Yours to Treasure. If your tradition must-dos include family outings, you will find an abundance of joyful holiday events in this year’s Holiday Happenings Guide. This guide is filled with many activities perfect for creating memories with your loved ones. Parades, nativities, concerts, holiday movies, and ice skating are some of the excitement in this year’s guide. Make sure you flip over to the Family Calendar for even more December events. Whether you are decking the halls or just taking in the sights and sounds of the season, please remember those less fortunate who may be struggling financially or emotionally. Make it a family priority to give back this holiday season. It doesn’t matter if you have a thousand dollars to give or just a smile; you never know how a simple act of kindness may turn someone’s day around or even change their life. May God bless you and your family with peace, joy, and laughter this holiday season.

The Importance of Risky Play for Children In 2023, Ellen Sandseter, PhD and her team of Norwegian researchers determined the importance of “high risk” play. They found that children across the globe engage in six types of risky play. The first is climbing (trees, furniture, and walls). The second is chasing speed (swings, fast slides, and soaring downhill on bicycles). The third is engaging with dangerous tools. These tools fluctuate by culture, but children across the world play with items that are potentially dangerous. The fourth is hazardous elements. If you are a parent, you know how challenging it is to keep your children away from fire and water. The fifth form of risky play is rough and tumble. This category includes chase, wrestling, and tickle fights. The final type of risky play is getting lost. Young children love to play hide and seek while older children enjoy escaping the watchful eyes of adults. As a parent, it is important to allow
Eastern Shore Parents I December 2023
your children to engage in risky play for a variety of reasons. Risky play increases resilience by exposing children to scary situations. Risky play allows children to experience things that scare them in a gradual and fun manner. Children who overcome fears encountered in play develop a resilience that allows them to successfully handle fear in real life situations. Risky play helps children develop flexibility. When children engage in risky play, they are willingly placing themselves in situations they can not control. Risky play allows children to adapt to unpredictable scenarios and become comfortable with being uncomfortable. Risky play helps children remain calm during physiological arousal. Our bodies experience the same physiological reactions to excitement and fear. In the face of both emotions, our hearts race, our palms sweat, and our breathing becomes
8
shallow. Children who experience these symptoms through play can normalize the ebb and flow of physiological arousal. Children exposed to risky play know that a rapid heartbeat does not always suggest something to fear. Risky play develops executive functioning skills. If you stand back and watch children engage in risky play, you will notice their innate ability to assess danger. Observational studies have repeatedly shown that children naturally evaluate situations and progressively transition from lower risks to greater risks. While doing this, children are learning to plan, gaining experience, and completing challenging tasks. Risky play builds emotional and physical strength. Risky play challenges both the mind and body. When you allow children to push themselves in play, they feel pride in facing what is difficult. Even if they only reach the lowest limb, point out how proud you are that they overcame their fear and started climbing. Rates of anxiety in children and adults are skyrocketing. Anxiety is contagious, but calm is also contagious. Despite your own fears, the best thing you can for your child’s anxiety is allow them to gradually engage in risky play. Follow your children’s lead and encourage every attempt they make to face what challenges them.

“Christmas in the Fort” Events
Rotary Youth Club Boosts Literacy Program Thanks to Grant
The City of Spanish Fort cheerfully kicks off the holidays at the Community Center with the annual Christmas Tree Lighting & Movie Night at 5 pm on Sunday, December 4th. Light refreshments will be served and live music will lead the community in Christmas carols as the City’s tree is joyfully brought to life with lights. Afterward, families are invited to join the City of Spanish Fort and Spanish Fort Public Library for a short family holiday film. On Saturday, December 10th, “The Spirit of Christmas” Parade will take place at The Eastern Shore Centre (30500 AL-181) at 6 pm. The Parade is led by the prestigious Daphne-Spanish Fort Air Force JROTC Color Guard and Cadets, followed by the award-winning Spanish Fort High School Marching Band and cheerleaders, Miss Spanish Fort High School, and the Grand Marshal. Adding to the holiday cheer are local civic groups, dance troupes, floats decorated by church and business organizations, and more! Of course, The Spirit of Christmas Parade would not be complete without a visit from the jolly old elf himself, Santa Claus, arriving with a little assistance from the Spanish Fort Fire Department! Last but not least, children of all ages are invited to bring their adults to The Community Center at 6 pm on Thursday, December 15, for; ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas Book Reading. Children are encouraged to wear their favorite pajamas and bring their coziest blanket to snuggle while we sing Christmas carols and listen to our favorite holiday stories. The final story, Clement Clarke Moore’s beloved Christmas classic, ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas”, will be read by a special guest from the North Pole! After Storytime, families have a chance to share their holiday hopes with Santa before enjoying cookies and warm cocoa. Applications to participate in “The Spirit of Christmas” Parade can be found at Spanish Fort Community Center or on our website. For more information, contact the City of Spanish Fort at 251-626-4884 or visit www.cityofspanishfort.com/christmasinthefort.
Improving reading comprehension scores for afterschool club members has become an even deeper mission in the last two years, and new funding will help underwrite an additional reading coach for the Fairhope/ Point Clear Rotary Youth Club. The Fairhope/Point Clear Community Foundation awarded $6750 to underwrite a literacy specialist this fall from the Baldwin County Literacy Council. Reading coaches are specifically working with 3rd graders lacking proficiency at grade level, and in danger of being retained in 2024 under the new Alabama Literacy Act. As with students across the county, standardized testing in Baldwin County reflects the learning gap caused by school closures and virtual learning during COVID-19. Alabama reading scores have improved this year, but still could see dozens of students in the Fairhope area alone held back next year under the new state policy. Meanwhile, the Club is launching its Holiday Tribute program again to grow academic support programs, and to ensure no child is turned away based on inability to pay. For donations honoring a friend, business colleague or loved one, the club will send a card designed by a club member acknowledging the gift. Find out more or donate online: rotaryyouthclub.org. Preventing Burn Injuries In and Around Your Home Hey guys, today we are going to talk about burns, one of the most devastating types of preventable injuries in kids. Did you know that every year, nearly 4,000 deaths occur in the U.S. from fire and burn injuries? Each year, over a half million people are treated in the ER for burns and 25,000 get admitted to burn centers. Injury is the leading cause of death for children in the U.S., and fires and burns contribute significantly. Burns are grouped into three major categories. First-degree burns damage only the outer layer of skin, while second-degree burns damage the outer layer and the layer underneath. Finally, third-degree burns damage or destroy the deepest layer of skin and tissues underneath. All burns can cause swelling, blistering, scarring, and, in severe cases, shock and even death. They also can lead to infections because they damage your skin’s protective barrier from bacteria. Today, we will address some of the major causes and, of course, some prevention strategies. Be sure to put outlet covers on any electrical outlets within a child’s reach and throw out electrical cords that are frayed or damaged. If you use a space heater, then be sure there are no flammable objects near the
Eastern Shore Parents I December 2023
heater itself, and be sure it’s turned off if you leave the house. Teach children to never go near a space heater or even to try to turn one on/off. Ensure you store matches and lighters in a locked cabinet or where children can’t reach them, and never leave candles unattended. Blow them out when you leave the room! Smoking is a leading cause of illness in addition to fires, burn injuries, and death. If you can, for your health and your child’s, stop smoking! If you cannot, then be sure not to smoke in bed and get rid of used cigarettes carefully. Before putting a child, especially infants and toddlers, into a car seat, touch it to see how hot it is. Hot seatbelt straps or buckles can cause second-degree burns on small children, so cover the car seat with a towel when you park in the sun. Keep children from playing near the stove or oven! Do not use a microwave oven to warm baby bottles. The liquid may heat up unevenly and scald your baby’s mouth! Be sure to unplug hot irons, such as clothes or curling irons, and keep them up on a counter out of a child’s reach. Monitor kids near open flames and never leave them alone near fires, bathtub, or hot stove.
14
What about hot water burns? First, set the temperature on your water heater to 120º F or use the “low-medium” setting. Any water set hotter than this can cause burns in two to three seconds! Test the water temperature yourself before your children get into the tub or shower, and don’t let young children touch the faucet handles during a bath. Make sure you turn the handles of pots and pans toward the side of the stove, or even better, use the back burners of the stove. Use extra precaution when carrying hot liquids near kids, and don’t allow kids to carry them for you. Finally, smoke detectors have been shown to significantly reduce the incidence of death and injuries from fires! Be sure to test your fire alarms twice yearly and ensure all sheets and curtains are made of flame-retardant materials. Lastly, have a family plan in case of a fire in your house so everyone can get out and meet in the same place!

Denise Wilson Bayshore Christian School
Sponsored by:
When talking with Denise Wilson, our Eastern Shore Parents Teacher of the Month, she described her teaching style a little differently than most teachers would. Her style, she shared, is simply engaging her students in discussion. “We have a lot of good conversation in my classes, and it’s where our best learning takes place,” said Denise. “I try to approach things in a variety of ways for those who learn differently. I’ve also been known to give a ‘mom talk’ or two on occasion.” Denise has more than 20 years experience teaching in a classroom and she also homeschooled her twin daughters, Ruthie and Maggie, from Kindergarten to eighth grade. They are now seniors at Bayshore Christian School where Denise is currently teaching. “I currently teach 10th grade Debate, 11th grade American Literature and 12th grade Rhetoric,” Denise shared. “I love teaching high school! I get paid to spend time with amazing teenagers, to read good books with them and help them write and speak persuasively and with integrity.” Some of Denise’s favorite moments in the classroom are when she and her students
Eastern Shore Parents I December 2023
spend the day together in laughter. Her goal in the classroom isn’t necessarily grades but rather focusing on each student’s journey. She hopes they find the beauty and practicality in everything they are learning. “What I hope to pass on to my students, beyond their academics, is that they are created, known and loved by God,” shared Denise passionately. “What I pray for each of them is that they will trust Jesus and follow Him all the days of their life because He is faithful, He is good and they need Him. I pray somehow they see that in me, despite all of my flaws.” Denise explained that her students have also taught her a thing or two — the biggest lesson being that she doesn’t have to have all the answers. “They just want to know I’m real and that I’m trustworthy,” said Denise. “That, and if I try to use their slang terms I will just look silly so I probably shouldn’t!” Denise has been married to her husband David for 24 years. The family lives on a small farm in Foley and they enjoy spending time with their animals, cozy fires, gardening and time with their friends and family. They are active members of Eastern Shore Presbyterian Church in Fairhope and are grateful for their church family.

Foley Sister Cities Hosted its Inaugural Oktoberfest 5K/Fun Run and Special Guests
Foley Sister Cities hosted its inaugural Oktoberfest 5K and 1-mile fun run on the morning of in October. Proudly sponsored by Ascend Performance Materials, Riviera Utilities, Riverview Turf, WAS and many more. This inaugural event hosted more than 100 runners and walkers. This event helped raise funds for eleven students who plan to travel to Hennef, Germany, in May 2024, and to spread cultural awareness of German Heritage. Runners dressed in German attire had an opportunity to win prizes. Runners enjoyed all things German, from brats to beer post-race. Linda B. Spangrud, Executive Director said, “I cannot thank enough everyone involved, from sponsors, volunteers to runners, for participating in making this first race a giant success. We surpassed our goal; it definitely takes a village.” Tuesday, following the race, Foley Sister Cities Commissioners and the City of Foley welcomed its first guests from Hennef, Dominique Müller-Grote, Director of the Office for Culture, Public Relations and Volunteering for the city of Hennef, and Stefanie Göllner. They were welcomed with a reception and greeted by our commissioners, students, parents, and local officials. In addition to the welcome reception, Dominique and his wife enjoyed some of the staple local stops including a sunset dolphin cruise. But the highlight of their trip was visiting all four Foley Schools and some of the local companies. Cooper Watkins, one of the Foley High School student delegates said, “I enjoyed talking to our German friends, and look forward to seeing them again in Germany. This will be an experience I’ll never forget.” The Foley Sister Cities Commission is a non-profit that promotes long-term, global people-to-people relationships through the development of international leadership, friendship, and understanding. There are many opportunities to get involved including international holiday awareness and cultural experiences. If interested in getting involved please view our Facebook and visit www. foleysistercities.com. 25

Daphne Utilities 2023 Grant Day
Daphne Utilities was happy to celebrate with these amazing teachers during Grant Day 2023. The following teachers received grants from Daphne Utilities: Daphne East Elementary - Mrs. Henry: Butterfly Garden. They aim to create a vibrant and educational outdoor space where students can learn about the life cycle of butterflies, their importance to our ecosystem, and the value of protecting them for future generations. This project aligns with our school’s mission to foster curiosity, environmental stewardship, and hands-on learning experiences. Daphne Middle School - Mrs. Hunt: Hidden Figures Study. The purpose of the novel study is to cover some difficult concepts while celebrating how far we have come throughout history and leadership. A few of the themes which will be taught in conjunction with the book include racism, gender discrimination, the aerospace industry, the lives of African American women working in the space industry during the 1950s and 60s, courage and perseverance, the value of hard work and sacrifice, personal growth, scientific and societal progress. Daphne High School - Dr. Tipton: Window Wildlife. Students in grades 9-12 will select native plants and will place these in stock tank garden beds outside classroom windows for birds and beneficial insects. They will also place window bird feeders on the windows of teachers who want one. Daphne Elementary - Mrs. Evans: Hydroponic planting. This project will provide students an opportunity to see plants grow from start to finish as the unit will be in the most prominent location of the campus, giving them an instant connection to our natural world and environment that they may have never seen before. A hydroponics unit will allow students to have hands-on learning experiences, with countless possible lessons in math, science, nutrition, economics, and STEM. W.J.Carroll Intermediate School - Mrs. Johnson: Hydroponic Tower Garden. At W.J. Carroll, we collaborate to build a school family atmosphere, work together with students as leaders to make a cohesive student-led school community. With around 450 students of diverse backgrounds, adding an indoor hydroponic community tower garden to our school would bring each grade level together in a shared education process like they have never experienced. They will end the project with a salad party! Belforest Elementary School - Mr. Ellis: You can learn a lot from a chicken. The Baldwin County Technical School built an incredible chicken coop for 1100 students to enjoy hens being housed at Belforest Elementary School, but they are in need of a “chicken yard.” There are so many activities they could generate that align STEM standards and the environment. They even have a Gardening Club that is interested in using the fertilized soil from the chickens in their gardens. Eastern Shore Parents I December 2023

Baldwin County High Flag Football Honored by City Council
Bay Minette City Council honored the Baldwin County High School Flag Football team on its historic first season, which included a play-off berth in the Area 1-2 Regional Tournament. The Lady Tigers boasted a near perfect regular season, dropping only one game to the Daphne Lady Trojans. In the play-offs, The Lady Tigers faced off against the Alma Bryant Hurricanes and suffered a loss to end the season. The Hurricanes went on to face the Lady Trojans, who ultimately won the Region and now advances to the Alabama High School Athletic Association’s Elite Eight State Tournament. This region encompasses both Class 6A-7A teams. This marks the first season for Flag Football in Baldwin County and only two schools fielded teams: BCHS and Daphne, both ultimately landing spots in the play-offs. That’s even more impressive considering most of the teams they faced were seasoned players as Mobile County has participated in the sport for a few years now. The Lady Tigers are a young team with no senior members. The team is comprised of five each from the junior, sophomore and freshmen classes, and five middle school athletes. Coaches include Glenn Ray, Michael Hill and Tabetha Davis. Team members include Talajia Brown, Mikayla James, LaMya Hicks, Taleiya Stanley, Madisyn Williams, Payton Davis, Ryann Wallace, Allison Siggers, Karsyn Barnett, Zyanna Adams, Stori Palmer, Payton Boyington, Jada Gray, Jamie Vinson, Emma Robinson, Zaniah Hooks, Shilya Kirkland, Sydney Rogers, Layla Stanley and Charlee Cox. Being passionate about several things keeps Stephanie Nematzhonov busy and often pulled in several directions. “I am secretary of our church, I run a cottage food business from my home, I am a Beauty Consultant for Mary Kay, and I host a weekly Speaking Club for English students in Kazakhstan, where my husband is from,” shared Stephanie. “My family, friends, and church are all important to me, so I do what I can to ensure that each area is nurtured.” Stephanie and her husband, Sher, recently celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary. “The first movie my husband and I saw together was ‘A Night at the Museum.’ We loved it so much that we married in the Museum of Natural History in NYC, in front of the Easter Island statue. We watch the movie together as a family every year on our anniversary,” Stephanie explained. Together, Stephanie and Sher have a 10-year-old son named Abraham. They are
very proud of him and agree that he excels in math and science, has hilarious jokes, and loves everything spacerelated. “Abraham could give any NASA employee a run for their money,” she shared. As we close out 2023 and head into the New Year, Stephanie wanted to give our Eastern Shore parents a healthier alternative for a delicious meal. “I am calling this recipe ‘Baked Impasta’ because it uses hearts of palm noodles as opposed to traditional ziti,” she said. “Last Thanksgiving, we resolved to start eating better. I am officially down 50 pounds just by making some simple changes in ingredients, like using Greek yogurt instead of sour cream. Although I still enjoy making pasta from scratch occasionally, we have found we enjoy the texture of these noodles, and it makes a world of difference in the carbs and calories without sacrificing flavor.” Hearts of palm noodles are made from one simple ingredient - the center of a cabbage palm tree. They are typically found in the gluten-free section at your local grocery store. They are described as neutral tasting and cook quickly, making them an excellent alternative for weeknight meals.
• 8 slices provolone • 1-1/2 to 2 cups shredded mozzarella • 2-14 oz can of hearts of palm noodles, rinsed and drained
Directions: 1) Preheat the oven to 350* 2) Add one tablespoon of vegetable oil to a large skillet and heat to medium-high. Add ground turkey and onion and cook until browned. (If using meat with a higher fat content, you will need to drain it.) 3) Stir in marinara sauce, yogurt, garlic powder, dried minced onion, Italian seasoning, salt and pepper to your liking, bring to a simmer and cook for about 10 minutes. 4) Gently stir in hearts of palm noodles. 5) Spoon half the sauce mixture in a 9x13” oven-safe dish. Layer 4 slices of provolone and half of the shredded mozzarella. Add the remaining sauce, then layer the remaining provolone and mozzarella. 6) Bake uncovered until the top is lightly browned and the cheese is melted about 20-25 minutes. Let rest for 10 minutes before serving. Serve with a green salad for a lowcarb, lower-calorie take on a family favorite!
Baked Impasta Ingredients: • 1lb ground turkey (could sub ground lamb, beef or chicken) • 1 yellow onion, diced •1 /2 of a 24 oz jar of marinara sauce • 1 cup non-fat Greek yogurt • 2 teaspoons garlic powder • 2 teaspoons dried minced onion • 1 teaspoon dried Italian seasoning salt/pepper to taste Eastern Shore Parents I December 2023

LEADING AT BAYSIDE Every experience in the Lower School is an opportunity to grow. Excitement is part of the process as students explore new concepts, face new challenges, and discover new talents. Fourth grader Eva Solomon presented her presidental candidate speech to the Lower School student body during their election assembly. Fourth grade represents the Lower School in Bayside’s Student Governement Assosciation. A male and female candidate are elected to office as co-presidents. This year, 21 students ran for office and read their speech to their constituents. This is one of the many opportunities to grow confidence and prepare for the learning opportunities that await them in Middle School.

Nothing is more heartwarming than a gift made by a child. Handmade gifts are affordable, fun to make, and can be given to parents, grandparents, teachers, and siblings.
Here are some gifts that are sure to make someone special smile this holiday season. Prints
All you need is a child’s cooperation, some paint, and a little creativity to make a gift that will be cherished for years. Handprints, fingerprints, and even footprints can be used to make a variety of crafts and art. Websites like Pinterest are full of ideas of how to make a handprint into a picture of Santa, a Christmas tree, reindeer, or snowmen. There are literally hundreds of possibilities. Try putting your child’s prints on an apron, ornament, tea towel, oven mitt, or T-shirt to give to a special someone. Make sure to follow the directions on the paint to ensure that the design lasts for years. As a bonus, your kids will love getting messy during the process.
Tasty Treats
Kids love to help out in the kitchen, so why not put together some tasty treats for some sweet people in your life? Get the kids involved in the holiday baking and put together a plate of cookies the kids can help deliver to a neighbor or friend. Putting a homemade cookie mix into a mason jar also makes an easy gift that kids can help with. Finish the jar with a holiday bow and instructions and it’s ready to be delivered.
Frame It
Photos make a favorite gift for any proud aunt, uncle, parent, or grandparent. Get kids involved in picking out favorite photos from the past year and putting them into a collage with handmade drawings or a poem. Try making a scrapbook page that can be framed for a special gift. Picture frames can be made with decorated popsicle sticks, clay, or an existing frame can be painted or decorated with mosaic tiles, buttons, or other craft supplies. Affordable
frames can be found at local thrift stores or the dollar store.
Personalized Gifts
Nothing is more thoughtful than a gift made to fit the recipient’s personal tastes. Talk to your child about their favorite hobbies and tailor the gift to their interests. For example, use permanent markers to decorate golf balls for the golf lover in your life, decorate a plain coffee mug for the coffee lover in the family, have your child create a special bookmark for the bookworm you know, or use fingerprints to decorate wooden utensils for your favorite chef. Kids can also use scrapbook paper, stickers, craft supplies, and cardstock to make custom stationery. Making personalized gifts also helps teach kids to be observant of others interests that may be outside their own.
Utilize Beads
Beads are an affordable and versatile craft item that can be used for a variety of gifts. Small children can string beads on a pipe cleaner to make a candy cane or cross ornament. Older children can make personalized jewelry or key chains for loved ones. Pony beads can be melted to make into a suncatcher, mobile, or even a bowl. With beads, you can give your child some ideas and let their creativity lead them.
Spa at home
Do you know someone who needs some rest and relaxation? Try mixing equal parts white or brown sugar and olive oil for an easy sugar scrub that is a great gift for anyone who deserves a day at the spa. There are many recipes for homemade soaps, sugar scrubs, and bath salts available online. Many can be mixed together in just minutes and cost very little to make. This luxurious gift may be quick and affordable, but it is sure to make your recipients feel loved and appreciated. There is great value in teaching kids to give gifts to others. They learn to be generous, thoughtful, and experience the joy of giving. They also learn the important lesson that gifts do not need to cost a fortune to be cherished. Teach Them to Be Givers... And Be an Example Q. With all the commercials and marketing that accompany the holiday season, how can parents teach their young children about giving and putting others first at this time of year?
A. Christmas is a traditional time to give and help others. But even for adults, it’s easy to get so caught up the glitz that we end up forgetting to teach our kids how to give and why it’s so important. How do we make sure they learn the satisfaction of giving to others at an early age? Here are a few easy ideas. Send an extra snack with them to school. Then, at lunch they can give it to a friend. When they get back home, find out who they shared the snack with and talk about what happened. It can be as simple as that. Also, encourage your kids to pass
along compliments. Sharing a kind word with a classmate, or even their teacher, will go a long way toward brightening someone’s day any time of year. When you’re involved in giving or helping others in any way, take your kids with you. If you’re sponsoring a family through your church, or participating in a charity drive, let your kids be part of the buying and delivery process. When you make giving memories together, they’ll stick with your kids for years to come. If you really want to make the kids part of the process, you could let them pick a charity to help. If you give them a commission for doing jobs around the house, or if they’re
older and have a part-time job, they can start saving a percentage to donate. Another idea might be giving away old toys. Take some time to gather up all the toys they don’t play with and don’t want anymore. Search the closet together, and choose things to take to Goodwill or another charitable organization. Remember, you’re the adult. That means it’s your job to set an example and create teachable moments. So, this year give your kids nice gifts within your budget. But take time to create situations that allow them to participate in wonderful giving experiences, as well — because giving truly is better than receiving.

Whether you celebrate Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Eid al-Fitr, Bodhi Day, or the winter solstice, holiday traditions are a fun way for families to bond and create fond memories. The traditions you choose are limited only by your imagination in the way you and your family carry them out.
The following are a few fun traditions to consider! Eastern Shore Parents I December 2023

Customs for Gatherings Storytelling. Choose a theme such as ‘my most memorable holiday season’ or ‘the best thing that happened this year,’ and ask each person to share a memory. Record the storytelling on video or audio, then play it in future years as part of your memory-sharing tradition. Poetry. Hold a holiday poetry reading. Ask each person to bring copies of their favorite seasonal or holiday poems to pass out and read aloud at your gathering. White elephant. Rather than exchanging gifts or doing a drawing for a gift exchange, hold a ‘white elephant.’ Each guest brings a wrapped gift that anyone can use. Everyone then draws a numbered slip and takes a turn choosing either a wrapped gift or taking an unwrapped gift from another participant. If a player loses their gift, that person gets to choose another wrapped gift or take a gift from someone else. For complete rules and variations on this fun gift exchange, visit whiteelephantrules.com.
For Twosomes or the Whole Brood Cozy escape. Escape the holiday hustle and bustle, and enjoy a holiday retreat. Try a cozy cabin in the woods or another scenic setting. Then enjoy your togetherness near a roasting fire, flipping through family photo albums, enjoying holiday music, doing crafts, and other relaxing activities. Holiday countdown. Take a 3” by 3’ strip of ribbon and cut 24-paired slits from top to bottom. Thread each pair with a narrow ribbon and tie a sucker in each. Beginning December 1st, remove a lollipop each day through Christmas Eve, or the eve of the holiday you celebrate. Romantic evening. Couples often forget to take time out for each other during the busy holiday season. Plan an evening for two and reserve a table near a fireplace or a different romantic setting. When you return home, light some candles and your tree, listen to holiday or soft music, and exchange a special gift with each other. Then spend the evening reminiscing and sharing your dreams for the future. Cut your own tree. Take the whole family to a tree farm and make a day of it. Look for the perfect tree to compliment your home, or that fits your family’s taste. 51

International customs. Pick up a book on holiday customs around the world. Each year, choose a different culture or nationality for your theme. Then decorate and try new traditions accordingly. Shopping date. Make a date with your partner, and assist each other in selecting your holiday attire. Decide in advance on the formality so you choose complementary outfits and your shopping trip together remains agreeable.
Just for You Pamper yourself. Decorate the bathroom in holiday candles, fragrance, and holly. Throw on some holiday or other relaxing music. Then enjoy a long bubble bath and give yourself a full salon treatment. Include a manicure, pedicure, deep hair conditioning, facial mask, and body buff.
Traditions for All Stockings for adults. Fill stockings for your partner, parents, or grandparents to discover. Stuff them with treats, beauty products, postage stamps, lottery tickets, and other inexpensive or usable items.
Eastern Shore Parents I December 2023
Help a needy family. Deliver a box of groceries, or supply a family with gloves and hats. Ask your children to make room for their own new gifts by donating good, unwanted toys. Offer the toys to the needy family to leave from Santa, or wrap them yourself and leave them on the doorstep. Bake holiday treats. Nothing gets you in the spirit like baking Christmas cookies or making peppermint bark. Turn on some holiday tunes and get in the kitchen together. A special ornament. Buy a new tree ornament each year that signifies something important such as your baby’s first Christmas or solstice. If it’s your first season in a new home, find an ornament that represents it. Homemade wrapping paper. Get a roll of brown Kraft paper. Then cut holiday shapes out of sponges, dip them in holiday-colored paint, and stamp the shapes onto the paper. Use glitter and glue to add to the festive look.
Tradition Tips 1) Discontinue holiday traditions that have lost their appeal and usefulness or
52
that create too much stress. Talk to your family members or friends who share in the tradition, explain your feelings, and ask for input. They may feel the same. Even if they don’t, you can try to reach a compromise that satisfies everyone.
2) Don’t overdo it. It’s easy to get carried away with customs. Be selective and choose those that mean the most to you and your family. Most traditions require some investment of time, energy, or money. Taking on too many can cause stress and lead traditions to lose their appeal. 3) When you choose traditions, divide the responsibilities. Women often take sole responsibility for holiday activities, which can be overwhelming and interfere with their ability to really enjoy the season. So try not to strive for perfection, and allow men and children to help in the preparation. By keeping these tips in mind and being flexible, you and your family can enjoy holiday traditions for years to come. ESP

“What do you mean you don’t know where your new shoes are? You haven’t even had them for a week!” I screamed at my daughter as steam simmered out of my ears and my face burnt with rage. Did I lose my temper in that moment? Yes. Did I feel badly about it? Only partially. I was furious that my daughter had no idea where her sneakers were that I just ordered a few days earlier. She went to camp the previous day with them on, but now she had no idea where they were. It is just so frustrating to have something you pay a decent amount of money for vanish into thin air. On top of that, I discovered that they were missing two minutes before we needed to walk out the door to get to camp in the morning. Just a little bit stressful.

I screamed, I yelled, I threw a fit. My behavior was definitely overblown as a reaction to a five-year-old losing a material item (I know, it’s just stuff!), but I also know that if she does not learn that this is a big deal, how will she ever learn responsibility for her belongings and the value of a dollar? I joked that she would have to find a way to earn the money to pay for new shoes. The bewildered look I got in return meant it was time to explore the best ways to teach young children responsibility so that I do not have to experience that stressful scene again.
Expectations
Are my expectations too high? According to child psychologist Cheryl Gilbert Mac Leod interviewed by Today’s Parent, young children are focused on so many things at once that it is common for them to lose their gear. We can expect children up to age six to lose their belongings at times. When they enter elementary school, they can begin to take on more responsibility and understand consequences for their actions. Set some rules with them about which items you will replace, how many times you will replace them, and any other sacrifices they will have to make such as doing chores to “earn” things or giving up certain privileges like screen time. Some kids may be naturally organized, but for the most part it is up to us to teach them how to keep track of their things and to realize the importance of responsibility. There are some simple practical solutions, but also some deeper, more life-long lessons that we can teach our children about responsibility, respect, and the value of a dollar.
Practical Solutions
Let’s start with some practical solutions to help our children keep better track of their belongings.
Set reminders based on their schedule. Talk to your children about their daily schedule and point out important actions to take throughout the day, such as putting their lunchbox back into their backpack after their lunch period, putting their clothes in their backpack after a swim lesson, and keeping track of their water bottle throughout the day. Ask them to double check that they have all their belongings before they leave school or camp at the end of the day. Forming these habits based on a consistent routine can be very effective and used in so many other situations down the road.
Label everything. Although it is a time investment up front, labeling your children’s belongings provides an insurance policy in case they do forget or misplace something. Hopefully someone will find the lost item and take it to the lost and found so that you can retrieve it later. You can simply use a Sharpie marker or purchase some name labels online.
Make a checklist. Work with your children to write a list of their key belongings— such as a lunchbox, sweatshirt, sunglasses, hat, homework folder—that they need to make sure they have before they leave the house in the morning and before they come home at the end of the day. Review this list over and over again with them until it is ingrained in their memory. Be sure to review the list together so that you are also checking that they have everything they need.
Prompt them with specific questions. Yes, we parents are known to nag, but it is necessary at times. Be proactive by asking them questions based on the checklist you created. “Do you have your hat and sunglasses for the day? Don’t forget to put them in your backpack when you are not using them.” Eventually, they will hear your questions enough that they will come up with them on their own.
Make it fun. Today’s Parent offers a really clever tip: try teaching your kids a catchy song, cheer, or acronym to remember their gear.
Lessons For A Lifetime
The simple act of my daughter losing her new sneakers at camp prompted some important lessons that she can carry with her for a lifetime. Although I did not handle the moment as calmly as I should have, my daughter got the message that she was irresponsible and her actions had consequences. First, she felt uneasy that I was scolding her--she prefers a happy mommy. Second, she needed to understand that I was not going to immediately hop on Amazon and re-order those same 45 dollar shoes just because she loved them. That day she wore her old, beat up, slightly-too-small sneakers that she was so happy to leave behind when the new ones arrived. And when I asked her how she was going to earn the money to 63
order new shoes, she realized that so much of what she has and loves costs money, and that needs to be earned by hard work. I knew that if I simply “came to the rescue” my daughter would grow up with an entitled expectation. There has been a lot of talk about entitled children lately. These children grow up feeling privileged because their parents believe that they should be happy all the time and never face consequences for their actions. Marsha B. Sauls, Ph.D., a licensed psychologist, explains that these children become belligerent, angry, lazy, selfish, incapable of planning ahead, and unable to understand how their behavior and choices impact others. Instead, I am trying to raise responsible children who understand that there are consequences for their actions. This means my children won’t always be completely happy. They won’t automatically get things just because they want them. It’s not just that I want my kids to be responsible for materials things; responsibility impacts so many aspects of their lives. If they learn to take care of their own toys and clothes now, then they will respect other people and their stuff, too. They will grasp the value of working hard to be able to pay for things, which will help them to manage their time and money more wisely. They will also begin to see the importance of helping people who do not have nearly as much as they do. Finally, they will feel empowered and develop self-esteem because they have control over their own behavior, which can help them achieve their goals and desires throughout life. Back to those shoes. I am happy to report that we found the sneakers in a bin in the hallway at camp. But now my son lost his sweatshirt... ESP

Unearned vs. Earned Education Preparing to Kick Off the New Year Informed I have been on the road frequently speaking at student and parent conferences. One of my favorite things about what I do, other than getting to meet parents and students, is learning new things. What do I mean by things? It can be anything really. Kids are hysterical and will teach you about most all “things” if you listen. What they like about school, what they don’t like, who their favorite influencers are, what their favorite games are, etc. I learn a lot about communities, a school’s history (I spoke at a school just this week celebrating 100 years!), and teachers are always a wealth of information. As I was getting ready to speak to a group of middle school students, a principal introduced me and mentioned to the students that they were about to receive an “unearned education.” He then explained the difference between earned versus unearned education. If you see that a stove is hot and touch it, you get burned and learn not to touch it again. This is earned education. When
you are presented with something or learn something without having to earn it...in this case, they were receiving education about social media from me...that is unearned education. I thought this was brilliant, and it got me thinking. As parents, we have the awesome opportunity to take advantage of unearned education about our kids and social media safety. What does that mean? How can we do that? What does that even look like? By nature, humans are reactive. Take social media education for our kids as an example. We tend only to want to get involved once something happens and we have to get involved. At that point, we have to learn how to navigate what has occurred and prevent anything from happening in the future. This becomes earned education, which is different from the education we want. It tends to come with issues. Someone may have gotten hurt because of a careless post, may be at risk because of contact with a predator, or may have a personal narrative to navigate

because of inappropriate pictures or content released online. Once these situations occur, the earned education can be painful, like touching a hot stove. But what if we become proactive and provide ourselves and our children with unearned education? What if we take action today to attend conferences and learn all we can about protecting our children online? What if we take some time to research and learn how to set restrictions, navigate social media apps, and do random device checks...before something happens? It seems to me that unearned education is much less painful, and maybe one would argue that it is a bit more beneficial than earned education. What if we, for the month of December, decide to learn a bit about social media and device safety? Then, when the New Year rolls around, we can kick it off with a healthy digital start without suffering some of the pain of being forced into learning. And the REAL positive of this unearned education...no one has to get hurt to earn it.
