Is it just me or has this been the shortest summer ever? Maybe it seems short after having a 5-month summer last year. Or maybe it is because we are all finally out and about having a great time. Time definitely flies by when you are having fun! After all of the chaos and strangeness of the 2020-2021 school year, I think we can all get excited about going back to school with a lot more normalcy. Not only that, our household has the added excitement of having a senior this year! Getting ready for senior year can be a lot of fun, but it is also a stressful time. Some students are vigorously prepping for ACTs/SATs and getting college applications ready, while others are researching what career path they may enter after graduation and deciding if it is on to additional career/technical training or heading straight into the work force. Each scenario is exciting and almost all of these require some sort of resume or application. In this competitive world we live in, sometimes a resume filled with extracurricular activities may give a student an advantage. Is shows the reviewer a more well rounded picture of the applicant. While filling up your resume may be a nice side effect to participating in extracurriculars, it is not the only benefit to enjoying a variety of activities. As Cheryl Maguire explains in this month’s feature, 5 Benefits of Multiple Extracurricular Activities, there are many reasons to get your child involved after school, at any age. From preschool to high school, registering for after school activities has always been a big part of the “Back to School” season and we want to help with that process. Each August we publish an extensive list of after school activities available in the area. Having three children with ever changing interests, I am grateful for the variety of opportunities offered. Whether your children love team sports, performing arts, scouting, fine arts or individual sports, you are sure to find just what you are looking for in this year’s After School Activities Guide on page 23. Multiple activities can get expensive, so make sure you also check out any clubs your school may offer. This is another great, and inexpensive, way to get involved! Registration fees aren’t the only things that can get expensive this time of year. We all know the shock of getting to the checkout line to find out just how much “a few” school supplies can cost. Fortunately, Sarah Lyons give us some helpful cost saving tips in Don’t Break the Bank on Back to School, on page 18. If you are blessed enough to afford a few extra supplies after your savings, make sure to donate supplies to the school or other backpack drives and help those who may not be as fortunate. Also, check with your school to see if there are any other items (clothing, shoes, snacks, etc.) that some of the students may need. Every child deserves to be fully equipped and ready the first day, and every day, of school. Go out, soak up the last few days of summer break, and get re-energized to head back to school! We wish everyone a wonderful school year!

why God gave parents to children. The role of parents is to shape children into productive members of society. However, when we make judgements without being curious we tend to intervene and correct behaviors when they aren’t necessarily wrong. Here are some practical ways to choose curiosity first: by Beth Long, PhD, LPC, BCBA

“My Parents Don’t Even Try to Understand Me!” In 1987, DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince recorded a hilarious song that captures the tumultuous relationship between teenagers and their parents called, “Parents Don’t Understand”. I am quite certain that at least one poet of every generation has pinned similar lines, which leads us to the wise kid statement of the month: “My parents don’t even try to understand me”. These words are spoken by every child at least once, but typically 1,000,000 times before the age of 20. If your child has never said these words to you, wait until they are a teenager. As most of my teenage clients point out, we truly do not understand the pressures of being a teenager in the 21st century. What all children truly need is for their parents to be compassionate towards them. Compassion requires us to listen without being judgmental. Unfortunately, our intense love for our children makes this almost

Greater Pensacola Parents I August 2021

impossible. When we are conversing with our children we want to jump in and correct every irrational thing that they say or do. Our judgement of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in that moment is counter intuitive to what they want and need from us. How do we resolve this age-old problem? We attempt to be initially curious instead of quick to judgment. The definition of curiosity is “a desire to know and learn”. Every parent wants to intimately know their children, but we hinder that possibility when we choose to form a judgment before being curious. Curiosity listens, judgment interrupts. Curiosity asks questions, judgment lectures. Curiosity attempts to understand, judgment limits the possibility of a different perspective. If we want to truly understand our children, we have to learn to bite our tongues and be curious. Biting our tongues is a good idea, but let’s be honest, sometimes our children’s thoughts, feelings, emotions, and behaviors are foolish and require intervention. That is

4

1. Listen without offering your opinion. A lot of times kids will hear their own flawed logic when we give them a safe place to verbally process their thoughts and feelings. 2. Validate feelings without validating behavior. You can hold and comfort your daughter when you tell her, “No”. She needs firm boundaries, but it is okay for her to be sad about them. 3. Do not always correct or disagree with their irrational thinking in the moment. You can always initiate a conversation about why you disagree later. 4. Learn to appreciate the differences between yourself and your children. Take personality tests with your family and educate yourself on the variety of perspectives in your home. 5. If your child’s opinion is contrary to yours, consult with adults you trust to understand your child’s viewpoint. 6. Make a list of family rules that are nonnegotiable and allow for some “wiggle room” in the areas not covered by those rules. Dr. Beth Long received her education in Counseling Psychology from Chapman University. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Board Certified Behavior Analyst. Beth has worked in six unique clinical environments across the country and currently owns Works of Wonder Therapy in Montgomery. Peacock Family Make Significant Contribution to Gulf Coast Kid’s House

Bayou Hills Run, City 5K/10K Championships

John and Jerre Peacock recently made a $25,000 donation to Gulf Coast Kid’s House to further their mission of ending child abuse and healing families impacted by abuse. “It takes a truly amazing person and family to turn a tragedy of losing a son into a legacy of giving,” said GCKH Executive Director Stacey Kostevicki. “We are so grateful to the Peacocks and their seemingly endless generosity.” The Peacock family has been longtime supporters of GCKH, supporting it through personal donations as well as proceeds from the Panhandle Charitable Open Golf Tournament, which was retired in 2019. The Panhandle Charitable Open benefitted numerous local charities and was held in honor of the Peacocks’ late son, John Ryan Peacock, and Ashley Offerdahl, late child of co-chairs Nels and Abbie Offerdahl. Through their hard work and determination, the Peacock family has donated nearly $350,000 to the GCKH mission in the last 13 years. In honor of their contributions, GCKH has named its Child Protection Team wing in honor of the Peacock family. At GCKH, the Child Protection Team provides forensic and medical interviews to victims of child abuse and neglect in our community. GCKH’s mission is to end child abuse and heal families through collaborative intervention, family support and prevention education. Pensacola Catholic Graduate Receives Special Award

For the past 38 years, a very special award has been bestowed on a member of the Pensacola Catholic High School graduating class at Commencement Exercises. This award, named the Pro Deo et Patria, recognizes a graduate who dynamically and consistently exemplifies the spirit and ideals of Catholic High School. The ideals are summarized very succinctly in the school motto, “Pro Deo et Patria,” translated from Latin to mean “For God and Country.” Each year, the faculty and senior class members, by means of a vote of each individual, select a member of the graduating class to receive this honor. Among the many awards given to graduates each year, this is perhaps the most meaningful and cherished because it recognizes someone who has chosen to live by the ideals and core values of Catholic High School—Selfless Love, Commitment to Excellence, Personal Integrity and Commitment to Service—to do all For God and Country. This year’s recipient, Joseph “Joey” Baroco, was presented the Pro Deo et Patria Award by Principal Sister Kierstin Martin.

Cordova Park Student Wins Essay Contest

Autauga County Schools

Emily Roberson, a fifth-grader at Cordova Park Elementary, was the 2021 Escambia County winner of the annual essay contest sponsored by Florida Retired Teachers Association (FREA) and EREA. Students were asked to describe a meaningful experience with a grandparent. Roberson’s essay is titled “Blessing the Elderly” and begins: “My grandmother and I came up with the idea to make pillows for the elderly two years ago. My great-grandmother was living in a memory care center, and we noticed how much the people living there needed a personal touch. We came up with a plan to make pillows for the residents.” Roberson goes on to explain how they made the pillows and delivered them to the Memory Care Center. “We stood back after we gave them out so we could watch their reactions,” she says. “Some were holding their pillows tightly or hugging them. You would have thought that we had given them a million dollars.” As the winner of the contest, Roberson received $50, a framed certificate, and a bouquet of roses from EREA. She is shown with her teacher, Julie Glucroft, as well as Barbara Beck and Ruth Sneed, the literacy cochairs for Escambia Retired Educators Association (EREA).

Electrifying Summer Programs at Montessori!

Campers made their hair stand on end while learning about the properties of static electricity at Montessori School of Pensacola’s summer camp. They experimented with balloons attracting bits of paper and also with their hair. These young scientists got to see how they could cause atoms to become unbalanced to create static!

Chris Gallman was a member of the Catholic High School Class of 1999 and a very talented member of both the basketball and track teams. In May of 1998, just days after he won the District high jump gold medal at the end of his junior year, and shortly before he was to leave for the State track meet, he died very suddenly and tragically of an undiagnosed heart condition. His death left the Catholic High community stunned and heartbroken. Gallman was a very special person—a talented athlete, a friend to all, rarely seen without a smile on his face and a kind word for everyone—the epitome of kindness and good sportsmanship. Shortly after his untimely death, there was a groundswell of desire from all parts of the CHS family—students, teachers, administrators and parents—all recognizing the unique goodness of Chris Gallman and asking to establish an award in his honor, to memorialize the goodness he stood for in his life at Catholic High, his sportsmanship, selflessness and compassion. These qualities became the criteria for the award that is given each year at commencement exercises. With the input of athletes in all CHS athletic programs, the entire CHS faculty, and the CHS coaching staff, the selection of the recipient for the Chris Gallman Sportsmanship Award is conducted each year. This year’s recipient, Darcy Sullivan, participated in three varsity sports throughout the year—cheerleading, soccer and lacrosse. In the award’s selection process, she was nominated by each of the three teams on which she participated as their senior team member best qualified to receive this award. This has never happened before in the selection process. Sullivan clearly demonstrated team unity and integrity, the same selfless attributes of sportsmanship displayed by Chris Gallman. Sullivan was presented the Chris Gallman Sportsmanship Award by Athletic Director and Coach Richard LaBounty.

Pensacola Catholic Tennis is ‘Tops’ in the Area

The Pensacola Catholic High School tennis team recently took top honors in all of the categories for the Spring AllArea teams named by sportswriter Eric Wallace in the Pensacola News Journal’s annual naming of local top athletes. CHS sophomore Justin Lyons was named Boys’ Tennis Player of the Year after a phenomenal season. Lyons finished the season with an overall record of 21-1 with his only loss coming in the FHSAA State Individual Finals. He swept the district and regional titles in singles and doubles. Lyons partners with CHS junior Patrick Ling for the doubles competition and together they had a tremendous year with an overall record of 16-3 and were named No. 1 Doubles Team by Wallace. Lyons and Ling were justifiably slotted number one and two respectively in the All-Area Boys’ Team. CHS freshman Gabriela Goyins was named Girls’ Tennis Player of the Year following a stellar year in competition. Goyins also finished with a record of 21-1 and, like her male counterpart, her only loss of the year was at the FHSAA State Tournament. She also took district and regional titles in singles and doubles competitions. Her doubles partner is CHS junior Maggie Eddins, who was also named to the All-Area Girls’ Team. Catholic High’s Geoff Watts was also named All-Area Tennis Coach of the Year. Coach Watts has been the tennis team coach at CHS since 2006 and also teaches English.

Escambia County Public Schools, UWF Launch Free Podcasts for Parents

East Hill Christian Teacher Retires

East Hill Christian School teacher Sylvia Wright has been with EHCS for the past nine years. She is leaving a legacy of faithful service in a career of teaching middle and high school math for the past 41 years. The students, staff and faculty will miss her but are excited for Mrs. Wright as she transitions into retirement.

The Escambia County Public Schools Foundation has partnered with the University of West Florida to offer free podcasts to help parents support their student’s success in the new academic year. The seven podcasts are available on demand at ecsd-fl.schoolloop. com/podcasts. “Supporting today’s youth to realize school success is a lot to navigate for anyone, especially parents,” said Dr. William Crawley, dean of the College of Education and Professional Studies. “It is our hope that by teaming up with the Escambia County Public Schools Foundation, we can share our faculty’s expertise to make a positive impact on our community.” Kristie Kelley, executive director at the Foundation, added, “We are excited to partner with UWF for the second time in as many years. Last spring, we offered webinars to help parents navigate their child’s education during the pandemic. This fall, we are offering podcasts on topics the parents requested when that first series ended.” Podcast topics and presenters include: “Communicating with Your Child’s Teacher” by Rochelle Carmichael and Dr. John Pecore; “Establishing Routines” by Dr. Melanie DiLoreto and Dr. Holley Handley; “Helping Young Learners Read” by Dr. Elizabeth Bemiss and Dr. Kathleen Heubach; “Older Student Literacy Challenges” by Dr. Kathleen Heubach and Mercedes Musto; “Testing and Assessment” by Dr. Bill Evans and Dr. Aneta Walker; “Students with Special Needs” by Dr. Keri Fogle and Dr. Tim Morse; and “Preparing Your Child for College” by Dr. William Crawley and Dr. Jennifer Stark. “We are especially excited that Andrew McKay is hosting these podcasts,” said Kelley. “He interviewed teachers from the Escambia County School District and UWF faculty from the departments of teacher education and educational leadership and instructional design and technology.” The podcasts were recorded in the Pickens Multimedia Studio at the UWF College of Education and Professional Studies. Wells Fargo provided funding for both the webinars in the spring and podcasts this fall.

Animal Tales Visits MSP Summer Camp

Montessori School of Pensacola ended a week of summer camp with a special visit from Animal Tales. Animal Tales specializes in professional live educational animal programs committed to educate, entertain and inspire. MSP students love when John from Animal Tales visits with an engaging and fun presentation where students get to be involved. To go along with its dinosaur-themed camp, campers learned about some animals that still live now that are descendants of prehistoric dinosaurs. Campers were very excited to see how scorpions glow bluish-green under an ultraviolet or black light. go clo co era res ag up pe to ite mo Sa at eff tow pa ce aro Ro Ia ne ca su oth Summer is winding down and kids are preparing to start a new school year. This signifies an exciting new start for kids, but for parents, it can mean spending a lot of money on school supplies and new clothing for fall. Families with children in elementary school through high school plan to spend an average of $696.70 this year on back to school shopping. (National Retail Federation) That’s a lot of money, especially for parents of multiple children. How can you buy the items your kids need without breaking the bank on back to school shopping?

Here are some ways to save! Greater Pensacola Parents I August 2021

Take inventory It doesn’t make sense to purchase items you already have around the house. “We reuse items like notebooks, binders, and pencil boxes.” says Carrie Miller, mom of three. “I also save all the pencils from class parties, birthday parties and other giveaways to use the following year.” Before you start back to school shopping, take inventory of what office and school supplies you already have that are new or gently used. Go through the kids closets and remove items that are two small and make a list of what needs to be replaced. Can any items be passed down to younger siblings? Consider shopping at second hand store or consignment sales for gently used items to save on clothes, shoes, and coats. Backpacks and lunchboxes that are in good condition can be reused. Once you know what you need, make a list of what needs to be purchased and stick to it.

Do your research It’s hard to know if you are getting a good deal on back to school supplies and clothing if you do know how much they cost to begin with. Once you know the average cost of an item it is easier to do your research and make sure you are getting a good deal. It can be easy to get caught up on saving on small items like glue and pencils, but it is wiser to focus on big ticket items which can mean more money saved. Saving $50-100 on a tablet is worth the effort of driving across town to shop compared to saving 10 cents on glue. “Shop around!” says Emily Rodriguez. “Last year I added all the items needed to my online cart at Walmart, Amazon and Target. I was surprised Target came out well under the other two. I was glad to save the money.”

Take advantage of discounts For retailers, back to school season is the biggest money maker, second only to the Christmas shopping season. To bring in customers, they are willing to offer discounts, free shipping for online

orders, price matching, in store coupons, and other deals to get you to shop in their stores. Take some time to shop around and find the best deals, sign up for email coupons and deals, and most importantly, don’t forget to use the coupons when you make your purchase. Many states, including Missouri, offer a tax free weekend in late summer. This is a great time for families to take advantage of a discount on clothing, shoes, and other items needed for school.

Buy later When you are looking at the long list of supplies that schools hand out, determine what they need right away and what can be purchased at a later time. You will be able to get school supplies at clearance prices if you simply wait until September. This is also a great time to stock up on commonly needed items for the following school year. “Purchase items in advance when possible.” says mom Fia Swartwood. “Clearance sales after school starts are a great time to stock up on paper, spiral notebooks, folders, and writing utensils.” Many families feel the need to buy their children a new fall wardrobe when school returns, but it’s perfectly reasonable to delay purchasing new clothing as temperatures are still too warm for fall and winter clothing when kids start school. This gives parents a chance to buy items over time or as needed instead of purchasing everything at once. “I shop clearance items after every season and guess on sizing for the following year.” says Katlyn Purkapile, mom of three.

Leave the kids home As a mom of six, my biggest money saving tip for back to school shopping is to 19

simply leave the kids home. I arrive at the store with a list of school supplies needed. If my daughter were with me she would ask for the sparkliest unicorn notebook, which costs twice as much as the plain pink one I would pick. It’s faster and more efficient if I shop for the supplies alone. When picking out clothes, back packs, and lunchboxes, it’s reasonable to bring kids along so they can pick out something to fit their tastes. Prior to shopping, give your kids a set budget and let them pick something they like that fits within it. In order to save money you may have to put in some extra effort in research, take the time to get organized, drive to more than one store, and forgo a few items to stay within a budget. It will be worth the cost savings in the long run, especially for families shopping for multiple children.

Bonus: Packing Lunches on a Budget The cost of individually wrapped snacks and premade Lunchables can really add up. Here are some ideas to save money when you are packing school lunches this fall. • Buy items like crackers, cookies, and canned fruit in bulk and pack into individual size containers yourself. Doing this ahead of time can give you the convenience of the prepackaged items with big cost savings. • Replace disposable bags and containers with reusable items to pack sandwiches and sides. • Use leftovers. Make a little extra food for dinner and send healthy, homemade items to school for lunch. • Make your own “uncrustables” and “lunchables” rather than buying the premade version. GPP

“I’m bored,” my 11-year-old daughter grumbled as she collapsed on to the couch. It was a rare unscheduled moment in her life. I cringed as I recalled what can occur when she has a spontaneous second. At the age of three, I assumed she was quietly playing with her toys only to discover the entire wall was covered with a new crayon drawn mural. We are both happier now that she is enrolled in art classes. She prefers being busy, which is why she partook in six different extracurricular activities this past spring. Her interests ranged from sign language class to swim team. Besides avoiding boredom (and messes) there are many benefits to having scheduled activities for your child. Research by NCES states that students who participated in after-school activities had better attendance, higher levels of achievement, and aspirations to higher levels of education.

Better Academic Performance

Even though my daughter was in six different clubs or sports, she received all A’s in her academic classes. By participating in extracurricular activities, a child is able to learn new skills which can be applied to the school setting. For example, my daughter was in the garden club and she used the information she learned about plants in her science class. Sports such as basketball, baseball and football use statistics, addition/ subtraction, probability, and geometry which can be applied to math class. A number of research studies found students who participate in extracurricular activities perform better in school. Douglas Reeves studied data at Woodstock High School and found students who were in three or four extracurricular activities during the year had dramatically better grades than those who participated in no extracurricular activities. There was a study done by the College Board, which found high school extracurricular participation is correlated with higher SAT scores, SAT math by 45 points and SAT verbal scores by 53 points.

more than one coach or teacher who will have different rules and expectations. They will have the opportunity to meet kids with a range of personalities and interests. These interactions will teach a child how to be adaptable to multiple people and situations. Maddi and Deborah Khoshaba’s training guide, Resilience at Work, discussed the importance of being adaptable and how when adaptable people lose their jobs they thrive due to their ability to adapt to changing circumstances. Being adaptable is a skill that can be beneficial both in the school or work setting.

or watching TV. If children are participating in after school activities they will have less opportunity to be absorbed by screens.

Decreased Risk of Obesity

According to the CDC, obesity affects about 12.7 million children and adolescents for the past decade. If a child participates in a sport they will be more active which leads to better health benefits from being physically fit. Even if a child joins a club or an after school activity, rather than a sport, they will be more active than if they watched TV or played video games.

Better Social Skills

How to Balance Your Child’s Schedule

Children will gain social skills both from the person in charge of the activity or sport and by interacting with their peers. They also have the opportunity to learn about teamwork by either playing a sport together or doing a group class such as a musical for drama. In my daughter’s book club at the end of their discussion of the book, they have social time. During one meeting, she didn’t read the book, but she still wanted to go to the club since she loved the social interaction with her peers.

Sometimes, even for my daughter, you can have too many activities. I’m always cognizant of her energy level. If she needs to skip an activity once in a while, I let her. Or when I noticed she wasn’t enthusiastic about going to gymnastics anymore, we both decided it would be best not to sign up for the next session. Most importantly you want to make sure your child is happy and definitely not bored. GPP

Bless Them, Just Don’t Enable Them Q. My husband and I are both teachers, and we’re on Baby Step 7. We’re struggling with things where our wills are concerned. Three of our four adult children aren’t being wise with their money, and my husband and I disagree on how to talk to them about it and how it may affect us re-structuring our wills. We don’t want to be judgmental, but at the same time we agree something needs to be said or done. A. Let’s say someone is working at my company, and taking my money in the form of a paycheck. Let’s also say this person isn’t doing a good job. If I don’t talk to them about their performance because I don’t want to be seen as judgmental, I’m not doing my job. I owe them the feedback necessary for them to become a good team member. Otherwise, they could just get fired one day without really knowing what

Greater Pensacola Parents I August 2021

happened because I refused to “judge” them. There’s a big difference between judging people and being judgmental. But it’s unkind not to share insights or suggestions for a better way of life with those you love most. Holding back and telling yourself the way someone behaves is just the way they’re made is wrong in most instances. Overspending and not saving money aren’t character traits— they’re decisions. They’re adults now, and they’re going to do what they want. They don’t have to understand or support your ways of handling money, but you and your husband have every right to tell them they have to start behaving in certain ways if they expect to receive your money when the time comes. If they’re misbehaving, and you give them money,

32

you’re funding that bad behavior. That’s not love, that’s enabling. And a big pile of money isn’t going to heal the bad things— it’s only going to magnify them. Sit down with your kids, and have a loving, clear discussion about the situation. Remind them that they’re adults, and you and your husband are no longer able to tell them how they have to live. But let them know in no uncertain terms, gently but firmly, they will not receive your money if they continue to behave in ways you both consider foolish or unreasonable. Let them know they’ll always have your love, just not your money, unless they begin behaving more intelligently and maturely with their finances. You can’t make them do anything, but you can ensure they understand you two won’t be sharing your wealth with people who can’t handle it and use it wisely.
