My Momma Told Me... Not a week goes by that a concerned parent brings their child to see me for an ailment and the visit starts with “My mother says I should…” If personal experience with the specific illness eludes them, they resort to the next resource: treatments they learned from grandparents, aunts and uncles, etc. It certainly takes the proverbial village to raise our children! However, over time science has taught us there are many “Old Wives Tales” that do not work. Be aware, nothing replaces TLC of parents and family! That said here are a few of the more common myths we hold onto.

Butter that burn

Butter and heat have their place in the home, but together only in the kitchen. Even after the heat source has been removed from the burn, the skin continues to maintain local heat at the site of the wound. This promotes ongoing damage to the injured site. Applying cool (not cold) water for 15-20 minutes helps stop the heat penetration. You can then apply aloe vera for comfort. Burns that blister should not be opened. Rather, a clean dressing should be applied to protect the wound while healing. Location and size of the burn dictate when you should

seek medical care. If you have concern about whether or not to seek medical attention, go! Better to be told not to fret rather than “we needed to see that sooner”.

Ice that nosebleed

Ice alone applied to the backward tilted, bleeding nose may not be enough to stop the flow. It may even cause blood to go down the back of the throat causing irritation and vomiting. Rather, lean the head forward slightly and gently pinch the soft part of the nostrils just below the bony part. Do this for about 5 minutes while breathing through the open mouth. Once the bleeding has stopped an ice pack may certainly come in handy to keep swelling controlled if injury caused the bleed.

The Green Goblin strikes again

Nothing creates greater fear in the hearts of parents and daycares than the presence of the Green Goblin: green nasal discharge. Many visits are made to seek antibiotics for the treatment of “the sinus infection”. Science has looked at this stuff under the microscope and determined it is, more often than not, caused by a virus. Important fact here: there are countless varieties of virus that cause rhinorrhea, aka the Green Goblin, and they mutate to

make sure they live long and prosper. Again, being a virus, antibiotics do not kill them. Rinse the nose (many times a day) with a saline solution (salt water spray or drops) and flush or blow out the slime via the nose. This is the best approach. Keep your child well hydrated – enough fluids to make them go to the bathroom several times a day. It never works as fast as your patience and good nature require. However, if fever and worsening symptoms appear after several days, check things out with your pediatrician. Over time, secondary infections can occur. These are just a few of the entries in the Book of Wives Tales. Space does not permit more. There are also many tried and true home remedies that warrant discussion. Perhaps we can discuss those next time! Tavi Slevinski, Board Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, has lived in Pensacola, Florida for over 35 years. Montessori School of Pensacola Hosts Greater Pensacola Chamber Breakfast

Montessori School of Pensacola is hosting the June Chamber Greeters Breakfast. Local Chamber member businesses are invited to attend. The event is June 29 from 7:30-9 a.m. at the MSP campus located at 4100 Montessori Drive. This is an opportunity for businesses to network, as well as see the MSP campus and hear from alumni students and families about their experiences.

GSTC Hosts Aviation Technician Education Council (ATEC) Meetings

George Stone Technical Center will be hosting a Best Practices Meeting in its Testing Center on June 5 at 10 a.m. Representatives from regional schools (from Pensacola to Panama City, to Dothan and Birmingham and down to Mobile) will be discussing best practices and sharing ideas for improving training programs throughout the region. Representatives will also discuss recruitment strategies in a regional scope. This will include around 20 school reps (including Haney Technical Center in Panama City, The Alabama Aviation & Technical School in Ozark, Ala., Coastal Alabama Community College in Mobile, etc.) and industry partners such as VT MAE, Box Aviation and others. Following lunch, an informal meeting of the ATEC (Aviation Technician Education Council) will be held for representatives from all of the aviation schools and business partners attending the morning Best Practices Meeting. Shown, the latest addition to the “Hangar” at George Stone Technical Center is a EC-120 helicopter. It was recently donated to GSTC by Brown Helicopter at Ferguson Field. This aircraft will allow the aviation program instructors to teach maneuverability and functionality of flight controls, gear box to engine ratios, and operation of helicopters.

Take Stock in Children of Escambia County Awards $300,000 in Scholarships

Take Stock in Children and the Escambia County Public Schools Foundation awarded $300,000 in scholarships at the May 29 “Graduation & Unsung Hero Celebration” at Skopelos at New World. Sponsored by Cox Communications and the Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart, the event honored 21 graduating seniors who received four-year tuition scholarships and laptop computers. Also recognized were the volunteer mentors who met weekly with their students. The 2018 Take Stock in Children graduates are: from Escambia High: Diamond Franklin; Northview High: Jason Fischer, Kayla Galvan and Lari McCann; Pensacola High: Latavia Grace, Aaliyah Medley, Markita Sapp and Joshua Van Fleet; Pine Forest High: Lina Foust and Brianna Walker; Tate High: Olivia Brown, Devin Searcy, Taylor Smith and Sabra Stewart; Washington High: Armelle Delouis, DeMarcus Harris, Clay Johnson and Brooke Nemeth; and West Florida High: De’Shawn Brundidge, Dezmond Booker and Savon Johnson. Take Stock in Children was established in 1995 as a non-profit organization in Florida that provides a unique opportunity for deserving low-income students to escape the cycle of poverty through education. Students receive college scholarships, caring volunteer mentors, college readiness skills, and hope for a better life. Students are selected through a need-based application process in middle school, and comprehensive services continue through high school and include the students’ transition into college. Each student is matched with a volunteer mentor who meets with the student weekly at school. Scholarships are funded through a unique public-private fundraising model in which local scholarship donations are matched by the Florida Prepaid College Foundation when scholarships are purchased each year. BTW Students Raise Money for Covenant Hospice

The Student Government Association at Booker T. Washington High in Pensacola raised $8,000 this year to donate to Covenant Hospice.Representatives from Covenant Hospice came out to the school to receive their check at the end of the school year. “These students have raised an average of $6,000 annually from their 5K run for charity over the last 13 years. This year was the BIGGEST amount we have netted,” said teacher Pamela Hicks. In 2016, BTW’s SGA was named the Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, West Florida Chapter.

Escambia Competes in Rover Challenge

Results from the 2018 Rover Challenge are in! This year, competing against 95 other teams from a total of 12 countries, the Escambia High School Engineering Academy finished fifth overall and fourth in the high school division. The competition included some of the world’s top high schools and universities, including Auburn University, LSU, Purdue University, Texas A&M, the Ohio State University, and numerous international engineering, technical, and aeronautical schools. Congratulations to Mr. Deloge, drivers Ashton Floda and Sadiq Muhammad, and the rest of the Rover crew!

Montessori School Students Welcome Summer Break with Field Day

Elementary students at the Montessori School of Pensacola celebrated the start of summer break with a fun field day full of activities with water and popsicles and smoothie treats. Middle School students made the smoothies for the younger students and volunteered to help facilitate the different activity stations. Students loved the relays and fun challenges, like picking up marbles out of a baby pool full of water. This is an annual end-of-year tradition at MSP.

Blessed Star Campers Get Hands-On Earth Science Lesson

Blessed Star Montessori School campers had a recent hands-on lesson about the properties of various items such as geodes, petrified wood, sand dollars and crystals. The campers had a chance to touch all the specimens and look at them using a loop for closer examination. They then created their own personal book of properties, where they drew pictures of each and they noted distinct characteristics about each specimen.

PHS Junior Offered Scholarship for Science Project

This year, the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, the largest pre-collegiate science fair in the world, was held in Pittsburgh May 13-18. More than 1,800 students representing 81 territories and countries were present, and Pensacola High School junior Alexander Pope was one of them. This PHS junior represented the West Panhandle Region of Florida with a device he designed to monitor environmental status of mesocosums (biological systems that contain the physical features and organisms of an ecosystem but are restricted in size or scope for use in conducting scientific experiments). He created a sensor device that could measure the air and water quality of several molecular species to determine environmental quality for living organisms and built the algorithm to record the data on computer via wifi. The title of this project was “Monitoring Environmental Status of a Mesosocum using an ESP32.” Pope won the Presidential scholarship awarded by his school of choice! The Florida Institute of Technology awarded him full tuition for all four years of college. The scholarship award is worth more than $161,000 and he gets to attend the college he has been hoping to attend. Pope plans to start there in the fall of 2020. Escambia Musicians Perform at Carnegie Hall

Congratulations to the Escambia High School musicians who had the amazing experience of performing at Carnegie Hall! Soloists included: Sophia Bonanno, oboe; Skyler McLeod, flute and piccolo; Nicole Corleone, clarinet; Samuel Wilkes, alto saxophone; Clara Bonnlander, French horn; and Alyssa Norman, trumpet. They were directed by Douglas Holsworth and Dustin Hicklen.

GBMS Students Win Parking Lot Design Contest

Story by Brady Goodman, Dolphin Echo Staff Writer Students at Gulf Breeze Middle and other local schools participated in an event to design a parking lot for the Ascend Performance Materials Center. The event took place at the Ascend Performance Materials Center in Cantonment, Fla. At the end of the competition, Gulf Breeze Middle’s Team Star Car won with its exceptional parking lot design. “Ascend was seeking a new parking lot design to help keep the Pensacola nylon plant one of the safest facilities for employees and visitors,” explained Erin Tracy, GBMS gifted teacher. “There had recently been an increase in hazard reporting for the parking lot near the administrative building. The proposal’s purpose was to evaluate all options to redesign the parking lot/traffic flow (auto and personnel) resulting in the lowest number of possible interactions or ‘touchpoints’ between foot traffic and automobiles.” Other schools that participated were Simms Middle, Avalon Middle and Jay High School. From a teacher’s perspective, Tracy said, “This event provided students with an exciting opportunity for connecting STEAM concepts with real world experiences.” Challenges tackled by the kids in the event included green spaces, providing the proper number of handicapped/disabled parking spaces, adding an appropriate number of lights, signs and speed bumps with the effect of changing the flow of traffic. From GBMS, 24 teams entered the contest originally, and out of the seven schools that participated in the final county-level contest, three were from GBMS. To be involved, students had to: create a company (name, logo); create a sketch/model of the design including dimensions, scale and materials needed; take photos of the design process; supply detailed data displaying the efficiency of the design; formulate a price proposal; and put together a marketing plan for the finished design. From planning to designing, the event helped kids take STEAM ideas and make them into a real-world solution. Judges were engineers from Ascend that helped the students. East Hill Student Chosen For Science Convention

Jacquelyne Therrien, a 10th-grader at East Hill Christian School, is a delegate of the Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders in Lowell, Mass. June 29-July 1. The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who are passionate about science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM). The purpose of this event is to motivate and direct the top students in the country who aspire to be scientists and technologists, and to provide a path, plan and resources to help them reach their goal. Therrien was nominated by Dr. John C. Mather, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics and Science Director of the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists, to represent East Hill Christian based on her academic achievement, leadership potential and passion for science and technology. During the three-day Congress, Therrien will join students from across the country and hear Nobel Laureates and National Medal of Science Winners talk about leading scientific research; be given advice from deans of the world’s top tech universities; be inspired by fellow teen science prodigies; and learn about cuttingedge advances and the future of science and technology. The National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists offers free services and programs to students who have the desire to learn more about their future in science or technology. ECSD Announces 2018 Social Studies Teachers of the Year The Escambia County School District’s Social Studies Department and the local social studies council (EACSS) announce the 2017-18 Social Studies Teachers of the Year. Each recipient was nominated by her school for her outstanding work in social studies education. The winners are: Bonny Shiflett, Lipscomb Elementary; Nichole Beckius, Bailey Middle; and Robin Blalock, Tate High School. “Mrs. Shiflett (below left) brings history to life for her students through reading The Adventures of Rush Revere Book Series. She has also been instrumental in gaining many resources for our school, as well as the school district,” said Lipscomb Elementary Principal Susan Sanders. “When asked if she

would train other teachers in our district, she willingly accepted. As a result, she will provide professional development to other teachers at the beginning of next year. She is an inspiring, dedicated teacher and is a very deserving recipient of the Elementary Social Studies Teacher of the Year for Escambia County School District!” Jim Bailey Middle School Principal Janet Penrose said, “Nichole Beckius (at right) is a true Vision 2020 teacher. Her innovative style of teaching brings the world of history alive to her students. On May 17, the Montessori School of Pensacola eighth-graders graduated. The ceremony was held at the MSP Montessori Drive campus and was followed by a catered dinner. Fifteen students are moving on from MSP to high school this fall. Some have been attending MSP since they were 16 months old. The graduates presented speeches about their time at MSP, many citing their internship experiences or their time on the Heifer International Ranch as pivotal moments in their educational experiences.

For an end of the year field trip, Blessed Star Montessori students visited the Gulf Coast Exploreum Science Center. Students had a great time exploring the hands-on STEAM activities on the main level. They participated in many activities such as: making paper airplanes, creating parachutes which were tested in the wind tunnel, making boats out of popsicle sticks and seeing if they would float, and even testing their knowledge on a trivia game. The students split into two teams for the marble run challenge and worked together to create a marble run that would get their marble the furthest across the room. The students had a set time to create and test their marble run before the actual judging. They worked together to construct a structure out of PVC pipes and figure out how to support the structure so that it would not fall apart. It was a great hands-on lesson in team work and engineering. Later the students took a trip through the Human Body and Prehistoric exhibits. They enjoyed hands-on activities such as using medical tools to perform mock medical procedures. In the prehistoric exhibit, they enjoyed pretending that they were paleontologists and uncovering buried fossils. The trip wrapped up with an IMAX movie about the Galapagos Island, where the students learned all about the animals that migrated there and how they changed over time. It was a fun-filled day, packed with learning!

MSP Artists Enjoy Week of Creativity

Elementary students had a blast creating animal-, monster- and beast-themed crafts during a week of art summer camp onsite at Montessori School of Pensacola. The weeklong camp, taught by MSP art teacher Caitlin Vogel, kept children busy with multimedia projects. They created sewn monsters, papier-mache animals, T-shirts and more. The children worked together on these fun combination creatures by passing their papers around to each camper to add details to the creature. These collaborative works were popular with the children. The week culminated with an art show set up by the students for families and friends.

Pine Meadow Kindergarten Class Gets Special Visitors

Escambia County Sheriff Deputy Caraway has been working a day or two a week at Pine Meadow Elementary since schools have begun staffing with off-duty deputies, police officers or private security. He has enjoyed it enough to complete the School Resource Officer training! Mrs. Lassiter’s kindergarten class made a special connection with him because he says he had more questions about law enforcement from this group of students than any others. So, he decided to treat them to a special pizza lunch, and he arranged for a special visit from a K9 officer!

Florida’s Top Elementary and Middle School Physical Education Programs are in ECSD Schools

Beulah Elementary and Ferry Pass Middle School have been named SHAPE (Society of Health and Physical Education) Florida’s top Elementary and Middle School Physical Education (PE) programs for the state. Beulah Elementary has Todd Aulger, Whitney Voeltz, and Karen Sawyers serving as their PE Teachers. Ferry Pass Middle has Dustin Brenton, Kris Lapata and Candy Prince serving as their PE Teachers. This prestigious award is only given to one school at each level in the state each year. A program is selected based on the quality of instruction, adherence to a rigorous and well-rounded curriculum aligned to state and national standards, implementation of special health and wellness events and programs, family and community relationships, and student/teacher interactions. “We have many schools with incredible programs that are raising the bar and changing the perception of physical education,” said Casandra Waller, ECSD Specialist for Physical Education Health, Wellness and Driver Education. “This is not your old-school PE anymore, and these two programs in particular are amazing examples of what the new physical education looks like. On behalf of our entire district and community, we are proud and thankful for what the physical education teachers have done to provide optimal experiences for our students.” Matthew Taylor, assistant principal at Beulah Elementary, said, “Our coaches do an excellent job at planning structured games that challenge students’ athletic ability while motivating them to learn how to persevere when unable to do something. These skills help our children become better students and more productive citizens of our community.” Just last year Escambia County celebrated when Samantha Harrison at Booker T. Washington High School was named as the SHAPE Florida High School Physical Education Teacher of the Year. “As a district and department, we are pushing the envelope in physical education,” said Waller. “Our physical education teachers are stepping out of their comfort zones daily to implement new activities, incorporate technology and get all students involved in learning how to live a healthy lifestyle. Their goal is to make physical education fun so students will want to take their class and then they can teach them lessons about the importance of fitness and proper nutrition (disguised as fun).

Pensacola Music Teacher Nominated for Music Educator Award

Pensacola’s own Joshua Kaye was nominated for the GRAMMY Music Educator Award 2019 by the PTA at Hellen Caro Elementary and now has been certified as a Quarterfinalist! Kaye has been chosen from 2,800 initial nominees and now takes his place among the 188 music teachers, from 177 cities, who will move on to compete in the Semifinalist round. “I am honored that the PTA at Hellen Caro has recognized my hard work and dedication to music education, and I appreciate all the support I have from our students and their families,” said Kaye. In addition to being a State Certified Music Educator with more than 24 years of experience, Kaye is a regular instructor at Autism Pensacola’s Kids Camp. He regularly plays the guitar, bass guitar, drums, percussion, piano, mandolin & banjo professionally. His resume includes being an OPS Adjunct Professor for the University of West Florida teaching guitar, drums, piano and banjo, and he has been a solo performer, and pit musician for musical shows. Blessed Star End of the Year Presentations

During presentations of their final projects for the school year, Blessed Star Montessori students reenacted many of the ceremonies that took place during Medieval times. Students in the picture are reenacting a knighting ceremony. After the presentations were finished, everyone enjoyed a Medieval-style dinner. It was a wonderful display of what the students have learned about the Middle Ages up to this point.

Escambia County schools are asking parents of all new students, especially incoming pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students, to go ahead and register for the 2018-19 school year now! The first day of school will be August 13, and that day will arrive in no time. “Early registration helps schools plan how many classes they will have and how many teachers they will need,” explains Dr. Patti Thomas, ECSD’s Director of Elementary Education. “If your child will be five years old by September 1, 2018, we would like you to go ahead and take care of kindergarten registration as soon as possible. If your child will be four by September 1, it is time to register for pre-kindergarten as well.” If your four- or five-year-old student HAS attended a school district pre-kindergarten class this year, or has participated in any school district services (such as speech therapy, physical therapy, etc.) check with your neighborhood school or the source of those services to find out what you need to do next. If any students in your family are new to Escambia County public schools, you will need to follow these steps: Step one: Complete and submit the online enrollment application either at home or at the school. Because It’s Your Special Day, Too! For my son’s first birthday party, I began planning weeks in advance. I chose decorations that were precious. I made sure the cake was delicious. I asked a friend to take pictures because I knew I’d be too busy to capture it all. I made sure to invite dear friends and family while being extra careful not to forget anyone who might feel sad to miss this momentous occasion. The big day arrived. My son turned one and I began a to-do list one mile long to prepare for this big party! It was truly a wonderful time. We were surrounded by loved ones and my little guy smiled so big when he finally had his chance to tear into that cake! Giving Your Child a Love for Books in a Screen-Filled World

the 200th time. But it’s those cherished favorites that will always comfort and entertain. (If we go for a third book, Mommy gets to pick. Otherwise we’d never rotate our library.) Find a quiet, special space. We used to read in the rocker next to her crib, but on those nights she didn’t want to go to bed, she put up a fight just to enter her room. Then we used to read on the couch, but there are inevitably distractions -- the basketball game is on, the dog is barking at the neighbors, there’s music on the stereo. So I created our own special reading space on the bed in the guest room. It’s stocked with pillows and blankets, and I light some candles and lay out the book selections on the bed with us. It’s our insta-special reading spot! (It sure doesn’t take much with a toddler.) You can do this anywhere you have enough room for two.

When I opened the gates to screen time for my 2-year-old daughter, I was planning to limit it to airplanes and sick days. But with TV and tablets came a whole new colorful world that hooked my tot instantly, and her new word -- “cartoons!” -- became a constant refrain. Almost overnight, her obsession with books and our sweet ritual of reading became a distant memory to her little toddler brain. Screens offered something much more exciting. I was worried. For me, books are more than fun and educational. They’re a family tradition. My own lifelong passion for reading was sparked by my mother’s nightly read-aloud sessions with me and my sister. I want my kid to treasure that magical reading time as much as I did growing up, despite the irresistible pull of singing animals, animated princesses, and sweeping soundtracks. So I had to dig deep to come up with extra-special reading experiences to compete with all that sparkly screen entertainment. My hope is that these tips and tricks will cultivate positive and passionate literacy habits she’ll have the rest of her life.

Keep the selection fresh. Hit the library regularly, and check out stuff by their favorite authors or in their preferred genres. Libraries are key, since you never know what they’re going to like, and you don’t want to shell out bucks for books they won’t touch. Need recommendations? Check out some of Common Sense Media’s fave books for toddlers. Find print books with sensory experiences. You can load up your Kindle or tablet with digital books when traveling, but let them enjoy the tactile experience of turning pages and touching different textures. My kid loves books with an interactive element, such as flaps and dials or scratch-and-sniff spots. Her favorites include Mama’s Pajamas, which has an array of different fabrics, and Dance, which uses cardboard levers to make different animals dance. Keep ‘em all over. We keep a few books in the car and a stack by the potty, and she gets to take one to bed every night. It may be overkill, but it gives her an opportunity to connect with books at every step. Studies have even shown that having lots of books at home can give kids a big boost in school.

Make it a daily ritual. Every night, without fail, before my daughter heads to bed, we read at least two books together, usually more. On the nights she’s wound up and super resistant to sleep, this routine puts her in a mellow mood and helps her relax. By the time I turn the first page, she’s already heavylidded and sucking her thumb.

Resist the begging with clever excuses. When my kid gets really stuck on something and wants to do nothing but watch Frozen, I tell her Elsa and Anna are sleeping. She accepts that without question. A lifelong love of reading is a gift you can give to your kids that they will carry forever. One day she’ll thank me!

Teach Them While They’re Young Q. My wife and I want to begin teaching our son how make a budget and live on one. He’s 16, and he has a part-time job and a hand-me-down car. Is this a realistic idea?

A. Your son is at a great point in life to learn how to make money behave. Even in his situation, when he’s still living at home, there are plenty of things he can include in a budget. There’s gas for his car, along with maintenance and insurance. He’ll need to save a little money — maybe even for college — and I’m sure he’ll want some spending cash, too. Sit down, and teach him how to make a written budget by figuring out the upcoming month’s income and expenses ahead

of time. Also, make sure he knows how to properly balance and reconcile his bank account. It’s still your responsibility to provide him with the basic necessities at this point. But I love your willingness to teach your son how to handle money intelligently. The sooner he learns some basic money management principles, the sooner he’ll be able to handle his finances responsibly in the real world!

Controlling Your Cash Q. I work long hours, and I make pretty good money. The problem is the money from my paychecks always seems to disappear before the end of the month. I know part of the problem is grabbing quick meals between extra shifts, and eating out a lot after work, because I’m usually too tired to cook when I get home. How can someone who has very

little free time start gaining control of their finances?

A. No matter how little free time you think you have, or how tired you are, you must make time do a written budget every month. This is essential. Making a budget for the month ahead isn’t a lot of hard work, and it really doesn’t take long. When you give every dollar a name before the month begins, you’re taking control of your money instead of allowing a lack of it to control you. Start with the income you know is predictable. If that isn’t possible, look back over the last few months and find the minimum amount you brought home during a month over that period of time. This will be the basis for your budget. Once you’ve established a baseline income, you can write down and prioritize bills and other expenses. Just remember, restaurants are not a priority! When you make a prioritized spending plan, and start telling your money what to do ahead of time, you’ll have the ability to do what’s important with what you’ve earned!

Regardless of where you fall on the birthday party spectrum, the bottom line is that everyone wants their child to feel celebrated and special. After all, they will only be that age once. Here are a few ways to celebrate beyond just the birthday party.

Childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s birthday parties have gotten so complicated. Play genie and grant your birthday boy or a girl a Yes Day. While a genie only gives three wishes, you will be granting your child an entire day of yes. Ice cream for breakfast? Yes! Skipping school in the lieu of a day at the beach? Yes! The only rule on Yes Day is that there are no rules. But before you let your child’s imagination run wild, wise parents may want to set a few parameters, such as that the requests need to be reasonable and, in our family, are not to include the acquisition of pets.

Start A New Tradition

We have a tradition that my parents started – the birthday chair. The birthday child wakes up to find his place at the breakfast table decorated with streamers, balloons and other goodies, like small snacks, lip glosses, light-up buttons announcing their age, etc… My children love the birthday chair and it’s a birthday must, even when we’re traveling. If you don’t have a tradition to carry on, it’s not too late to start one. You can deliver a special breakfast in bed, fill the room with balloons, or make a crepe paper “door” that your child has to burst through. Who knows, years from now, your child may be passing that tradition down to their children.

Plan A Trip

At first blush, a birthday trip sounds hard (and costly) to implement. But there are plenty of ways to gift a trip. You can take the whole family to a special destination, you can do a birthday getaway with both parents or you can make it a solo parent trip, for some quality one-on-one time. Finally, you can ask the grandparents to play tour guide. Because trips are harder to pull off, pick a set birthday for the celebration. The trip can take place when your child turns double digits, is sweet 16, or when you feel comfortable with them flying as an unaccompanied minor (if you’re sending them off to grandma and grandpa).

Give Goody Bags To The Parents

Even if you decide to go the traditional birthday party route, you can still shake things up a bit. I attended a recent birthday kid party where there were goody bags – for the moms. It was brilliant. After all, parents handle the RSVPs, buy the presents, and schlep the kids to the parties, why shouldn’t we be the ones to go home with the loot? GPP

My youngest two children, a girl and a boy, have birthdays that are three weeks apart. For their early years, when parties included primarily neighborhood friends, I combined their parties. Princess and Knights

Every little girl wants a princess party and every little boy needs to release some energy. Encourage your guests to dress up or provide costumes to wear when they arrive.

Games:

1. Cross the Moat – Start with a large board or a few 2 x 4’s and keep getting smaller as the game goes on. You can have your moat over a small swimming pool or simply sitting on the ground. 2. Cup Stacking Castle – Work as a team or as individuals to make the tallest and sturdiest castle. You can limit the amount of cups each team gets or set up guidelines like it must have 5 cups on the base. 3. Find Cinderella’s Shoe – Ask all the girls to take off their shoes and drop one in a bin. The girls will sit on chairs and the boys will have to grab one shoe and see who it belongs to. This is a good way to partner them up for the Cup Stacking Castle.

Craft:

Depending on their preference, the kids can decorate their own armor, mask or tiara as found on Oriental Trading. They also have some great castle crafts.

Pirates and Mermaids Similar to the Princess and Knight party, Pirates and Mermaids has something for everyone.

Games:

1. Sink the ship – Cut a pool noodle into slices to form circular boats and add a toothpick sail. Order bouncing balls in bulk to serve as your cannon balls. The guests serve as pirates and try to sink the ships with cannon balls.

2. Mermaid Race – Players will wear one leg of a pair of panty hose to cover both feet and legs. They will race on their bellies or backs as mermaids on land to see who gets there first. 3. Treasure Map – Find the treasure by following a map with clues. Set up in the party space or get the neighbors involved in a scavenger hunt.

Craft:

Use an empty Gatorade bottle to create an I-Spy bottle. Alternate filling the bottle with small toys and either colored sand or rice.

Games:

1. Neon Glow Tag – Have the kids wear play clothes that can get paint on them. Supply everyone with a clean white t-shirt. Break the group into teams and arm them with a paintbrush and neon glow paint. Set up boundaries and encourage the guests to splatter as much paint as they can on the other players. For safety reasons, supply the kids with neon sunglasses. 2. Color shut down – This is like old maid with glow sticks. Purchase several glow sticks and paint the bottom of one of them black. The kids will hold the glow sticks in their hands and try to make color matches by picking sticks from other players without getting the “old maid” painted bottom. 3. Glow in the Dark balloon volleyball – Cut the end off a glow stick and pour the contents in a latex air filled balloon. Tie off and have the kids try to keep the balloon from hitting the ground.

Craft:

Make glow in the dark play dough or bubbles. Both are made simply by adding neon non-toxic paint to your favorite DIY bubbles or play dough recipe.

Little Baker

Kids love to help in the kitchen, but these cooking projects can be made outside on the patio or inside at the kitchen table.

Activities:

1. Dirt pudding cups - Everyone loves getting dirty. Use crushed Oreos (have the kids make them with rolling pins in Ziplock bags) and layer in cups with premade chocolate pudding. Don’t forget to add the gummy worms! 2. Too pretty to eat – The guests can decorate white bread with paint brushes and food coloring. When they are done, toast in toaster or in oven and return them to the kids to spread with jellies, butter or peanut butter. 3. Play with your food – Guests can design mosaics with dried colored beans, colorful fruit pizzas or make cars or boats out of bell peppers. The fun is only limited to their imaginations.

Curbing Your Teen’s Selfishness

Some parents feed their teen’s selfishness into adult years by continuing to rotate their life around them. I tell parents that at age 15 it is time for them to begin aggressively helping their teen get over a selfish mindset. Instead of always wanting to be “served” by mom and dad, older teens need to do things for themselves and also learn to serve others. After all, they are potentially only a few short years away from having to live totally unselfishly as parents themselves. Should this selfishness be allowed to grow during the teen years it will only accentuate into other problems after they leave home. So how do you put an end to your teen’s selfishness? First, you need to put on the brakes! Stop doing everything for your teen. Quit jumping every time he says “frog.” His control over your life and the life of others in your family is to cease, beginning now. Review the negative habit patterns you established in your home in the early years, and let it be known in a gentle way that you’ll no longer be doing a lot of the things that you had been doing to help them as a younger child. Break the news to them in this way: • I’ll no longer be doing your laundry. • I’ll no longer get you out of bed in the morning. • I’ll no longer accept childish whining from you. • I’ll not be doing what should be your chores, like cleaning your room or bathroom. I’ll no longer nag you about what you need to accomplish. • I’ll no longer pay for gas or give you spending money unless you earn it. Get my point? You have got to stop doing some things, so that your child can start learning to do some of these things for

themselves. You stop and get out of the way, so he or she can start. If you don’t do this, your teen is not being required to grow up. And I see a great number of kids today that remain immature into early adulthood. That happens not because of forces of nature or culture, but because parents enable it. So the first step is to just stop. Can you do that? And I mean both parents, not just one. The second step then is to have a discussion with them about why you’re stopping. It doesn’t have to be a deep philosophical discussion about their need to learn responsibility. I would leave it as a simple, “Because you now have the ability to do it for yourself and I don’t want to do it anymore!” Any comments beyond that will only stir up further fruitless discussion. Let your teen know that you’re not doing “it” (whatever “it” is) because you don’t want to do “it” any more. You’ll be amazed how it will put him in a position of not being so demanding of you, and will put you in a position of not having to do everything for them. Sometimes it is best to let teenagers know that they will have to start these new responsibilities “this summer,” or, “when school starts,” or, “when you turn 15,” or, “the first of the year.” That way you prepare them for the change that is coming. Don’t drop it on them overnight. Maybe even work side by side with them for couple of weeks as you make the transition, but be clear when your assistance will stop and that you’ll not do it yourself during the transition period. They have to help. Again, here’s what to tell them: • They’ll be doing their own laundry and if not, they’ll have nothing to wear. • The alarm clock you are putting in their room is so they can wake themselves and get to school on time. If not, they’ll get in trouble at school. 43

• That you expect respectful talk and no more childish whining. • That you’ll help in emergencies, such as typing their homework if their fingers are broken (use a little humor). This is something one adult would do for another if they needed the help. • That you’re not going to nag them any more. You’ll ask once and that’s it. Then, they’ll have to suffer the consequences if they don’t do it in a timely fashion. • That they’ll have to begin earning some money to pay for their own gas for the car. You may pay for the insurance and some upkeep; but that’s it. • That they’ll have to clean their own room. If they want to live in a dump, that’s their choice. If they want a clean bathroom, you’ll purchase the cleaning materials, but that’s all. • They’ll have to change burned out light bulbs, wash towels, and scrub their own toilet. Say you can’t do those things for them because you can’t breathe when you’re in their room for the smell of the dirty shoes, socks and shorts. I’m sure that when you present these things to your son or daughter, you’ll get to see their selfishness in action. They won’t like it and may even throw a tantrum. If so, then it only says that you should have started this process sooner. They’ll drop the ball a few times and have to suffer the consequences as a result, but be sure not to rescue them from their selfishness nor lessen the consequences. Doing so will only cause selfishness and immaturity to continue. It’s a common phrase I use with kids: “I owe you nothing, but want to give you everything.” This phrase allows me to communicate a “counter” to their selfishness, and promotes a concept of respect.

Jurassic World:

MPAA Rating: PG Overall: B Violence: C+ Sexual Content: A Profanity: B Alcohol / Drug Use: C+ The beloved Parr family picks up right where we left off a little over a decade ago. The Underminer (voice of John Ratzenberger) has attacked the city and the Supers’ attempts to save the day have failed... once again. And, again, that means they are considered a threat to the populace. So much so that the government has given up on their funding, and has fired Rick Dicker (Jonathan Banks), the civil servant who protected superheroes when all went wrong. Holed up in a one-star motel, Bob Parr (voice of Craig T. Nelson), wife Helen (voice of Holly Hunter), daughter Violet (voice of Sarah Vowell), son Dash (voice of Huck Milner) and toddler Jack-Jack (voice of Eli Fucile) are dealing with the prospects of homelessness, unemployment and family friction. Yet, there’s still hope for this incredible family. Promoter Winston Deavor and his sister Evelyn (voices of Bob Odenkirk and Catherine Keener) have a long history with Supers and feel they must be allowed to work within society. Using their marketing skills, the pair of siblings launch a PR plan that puts Helen, aka Elastigirl, on center stage as the ideal superhero. On the downside, studies have revealed Bob is far more likely to cause collateral damage during his rescues, leading to negative headlines. So the envious husband is left at home with the kids. Essentially flipping the former story into a Mr. Mom scenario, the movie dives into action sequences with Helen taking on a bad guy who uses TV and other screens to hypnotize the population (a tad ironic, coming from Disney, which is fast becoming the largest media company on the planet). Meanwhile Bob deals with domestic drama. Violet’s crush on Tony (voice of Michael Bird) is being hampered by a need to keep family secrets. Dash is frustrated with trying to learn new math from an old school dad. And after dozing off when reading a bedtime story to his son Jack-Jack (whose abilities are not completely known), the youngster wanders off and has a raucous encounter with a backyard racoon. The divide-to-conquer scenario is similar to the first installment, only last time it was Bob who went off to hunt the villain. In both movies, the most entertaining and engaging part of the script is watching the antics happening at home. In this case, compared to the complex and abstract depiction of the foe faced by Elastigirl, switching back to Mr. Incredible dealing with the pressures of suburbia comes as comic relief in more ways than one. Likely to attract audiences of all ages, parents may be surprised by the intensity of the violence in this movie. A secondary character is shot at point blank range (we see the gun fire but don’t see the bullet’s impact) and mom’s discovery of the villain results in a frenetic scene of Taser-like electrocutions and bright flashes that may cause sensitive audience members discomfort. Also unexpected – and unnecessary – are a few mild profanities, including terms of deity, that just don’t fit the usual Disney/Pixar tone. So do the positives outweigh the negatives? Fortunately, yes, but not to the same extent as the original. The Parr’s still works together, both on and off the job, and the conclusion reinforces the benefits of everyone doing their part. Likewise, there are many humorous moments, especially when Bob visits Edna Mode (once again voiced by writer/director Brad Bird) to get some parenting advice and respite care. However, the film’s unnecessary violence and profanity, along with a complicated plot, makes it far less suitable for children. Perhaps most troubling is the overarching sense that the Parr family’s problems may represent Pixar’s own family troubles. We certainly hope this studio’s stellar track record of incredible family movies may recover and return to its former glory. Greater Pensacola Parents I July 2018

Fallen Kingdom MPAA Rating: PG-13 Overall: BViolence: C Sexual Content: A Profanity: B Alcohol / Drug Use: B “I’m talking about man-made cataclysmic change,” warns Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) as he testifies before Congress about the implications of cloned dinosaurs. “You don’t know what it looks like ‘til you’re standing at the gates.” If you ever wondered how playing God with the genome of extinct dinosaurs could lead to cataclysmic change, you clearly haven’t watched the first four movies in the Jurassic Park series. But that’s okay – Jurassic Park: Fallen Kingdom graphically illustrates the deadly consequences. As the movie opens, Jurassic Park is in ruins and cloned dinosaurs roam freely on Isla Nublar and in the surrounding ocean. This pastoral paleontological paradise is now under threat because Mount Sibo, the heretofore dormant volcano, is on the verge of a major eruption which would produce an “extinction event” for all life on the island. Instead of seeing this as a “do over” for the mistake of re-introducing prehistoric animals to the modern ecosystem, dinosaur activists, led by Claire Dearing (Bryce Dallas Howard) are pressuring Congress to fund protective measures for the endangered animals. “An entire generation has grown up in a world where dinosaurs are living, breathing,” begins Claire’s earnest pitch, “But now they’re going to have to watch them go extinct. Or not.” Claire’s determination to save the dinosaurs is matched by Benjamin Lockwood (James Cromwell), who was responsible for cloning the animals and establishing Jurassic Park. Lockwood has found a new refuge for the endangered reptiles but needs help to round them up quickly. His assistant, Eli Mills (Rafe Spall) asks Claire to persuade her old partner Owen Grady (Chris Pratt) to return to Isla Nublar with her, restart the computer tracking system on the island, and help them rescue as many creatures as possible. Once Claire, Owen, veterinarian Zia Rodriguez (Daniella Pineda), and tech wizard Franklin Webb (Justice Webb) reach their destination, the action starts and never lets up. The volcano erupts, dinosaurs and people are shot with tranquilizer guns, humans try to outrun rampaging dinosaurs, and everyone tries to outrun the lava exploding out of the volcano. The action slows down slightly on board ship but picks up again once they arrive at their surprise relocation site. Claire, Owen, Zia and Franklin uncover treachery, greed and (spoiler alert) a plot to genetically engineer “weaponized dinosaurs” – creatures of surpassing strength and power who respond to human commands. The geneticist enabling this conspiracy has even produced a prototype dinosaur named the Indoraptor, which is designed to hunt, track and destroy. It should come as no surprise when this dinosaur, which looks like the Jurassic version of a meth head, escapes its cage and proceeds to hunt, track and destroy. Parents considering Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom for family viewing should take the PG-13 rating very seriously. The relentless violence and deadly peril faced by the characters make this movie unsuitable for small children. Adults may find themselves irked by paint-by-number action sequences, lazy writing, and plot holes big enough to push a T-rex through. However, teenagers looking for frenetic action, chase scenes, lots of excitement, and entertainment that brings back memories of imaginary adventures with toy dinosaurs, will likely enjoy escaping into this thrill ride in a neo-Jurassic world. 52
