When I graduated high school, I was the salutatorian... a ranking my parents and I were assured wouldn’t be mine because I refused to take Calculus and Chemistry my senior year, unlike all of my honors/gifted classmates. In fact, the school was so concerned with how not taking these two classes would affect my GPA, my parents had to sign a waiver. Forget the fact that I already had enough math and science credits to graduate and my GPA was over a 4.0, not to mention that I had decided years earlier the path I wanted to take, and it did not include those advanced classes. In the end, the only thing separating me from our Valedictorian was my final grade in 10th grade biology. It was the only class I got a B in, and I was dang proud of that B. Back then, a lot of people questioned the choices I made. Are you sure you really want to study journalism? Why aren’t you applying to Valdosta or UGA? And my favorite, I can’t believe your parents are letting you do this. As if my parents letting me chase my dream was somehow life ruining. As if going to a school where I only knew a handful of people would hold me back in some way. As if creating a career based on helping people through stories was a terrible idea. Though I didn’t know it at the time, that situation set the stage for my future, and if I could go back and tell my 18-year-old self one thing it would be this: You are on the right path for you, one that will lead you to your people and your purpose. Your journey won’t look like everyone else’s, but all the detours you make along the way will be worth it when that dream you’ve always had is finally realized. In case you haven’t figured it out yet, this magazine is the realization of my childhood dream. Sure, it’s not 100 percent what I thought it would be like, and the path to get to this point was not what I anticipated at all, but the goal has always been to provide a resource for my community through positive journalism. This month, we are welcoming new families to the Wiregrass with our Newcomers Guide and feature article, Making the Move. You’ll find all the best places to eat, play, learn and grow, as well as tips on how to make the transition to a new home easier for everyone in the family. Our other feature, When Your Best Doesn’t Feel Like Enough, really speaks to me this month. The past couple of months have been difficult, and I needed the reminder to count my blessings. Because even though it’s been a lot harder to find the good lately, it’s still there. After a year of living in a pandemic, summer is finally here. Whether you’ve got little ones to keep entertained for a few months or graduates trying to make the most of their last summer before college, I encourage you to look for the good in every day. Even when you’re tired and your kids aren’t listening. Even when you feel like you’ve given your all and it’s still not enough. There is always something good. You just have to find it.

Summer Fun Parenting Ideas This was a tough school year—whether you chose for your student to attend virtually or in person. This past year we spent more time at home with the kids than ever before and, just like that, they’re back home for the summer! It’s a great time to hit the reset button and instill some new values (like eating healthy), introduce them to the fun we had as kids (anyone remember super soaker water gun fights?), and create new memories. In our family, we often took trips to the beach and mountains for fun summer getaways, which was always cool for fun memories with extended family members like grandparents and cousins, but you should also consider taking trips centered around your children’s interests. Give your daughter the background to become a scientist who will someday find

the cure for cancer. Help your son create a groundbreaking community service project to feed the homeless. Did your child struggle in science or history? Sounds like a trip to a science museum such as the McWane Science Center in Birmingham or the Wonderworks Experience in Panama City Beach is in order. You see, many of us learn by doing instead of listening to a teacher lecture. When we engage in hands-on learning, we get real life practice. Not everything has to involve spending money on a getaway. Most local libraries have a summer reading program where children can win prizes for reading an allotted number of books. You can also grow a garden with your kids. There are so many kits out there that don’t require the traditional yard space to cultivate herbs and vegetables. It doesn’t matter if you
4
have a green thumb or not—there are too many YouTube & TikTok videos out there to teach you what to do (and what not to do). And as I mentioned earlier, you’ll never know how to do it until you do it! Finally, sometimes we just need to unwind and let our hair down! How about a family water gun fight, a foam party, or slip and slide kickball? I promise you there is a ton of fun that can be had with the kids no matter the age group. The most important thing is to create fun memories for you and your children. Kishia Saffold is the owner of Kiddie Care Learning Center in Dothan and Enterprise. She has a Masters of Business Administration from Troy University and a B.A. in Communication from Alabama State University. She is a wife to Jeffery and mother to daughter, Kiera.

“I always knew my purpose in life was to be a teacher, and after my first year of teaching my own set of students, I know I made the right decision.” Ellen Tschetter is wrapping up her first year of teaching at Hidden Lake Primary School in Dothan. She says being a first-year teacher during a pandemic was not easy, but knowing that everyone else was also navigating through a pandemic for the first time made it a little more painless. “I was less nervous about being a firstyear teacher because my colleagues reminded me that this year is not a normal year and we will get through it together,” Tschetter says. “I wouldn’t have made it without my mentor teacher and grade-level teachers.” Jaci Coleson’s son was in Ms. Tschetter’s class. She nominated the second grade teacher for Wiregrass Parents Teacher of the Month. Coleson says, “My son was nervous to start this school year because of the many changes that have occurred, but she has made this year so easy for him and me! She communicates often throughout the week with us parents and is so sweet!” “When I heard that a student’s parent nominated me for this award, I felt appreciated and noticed for my hard work this year,” Tschetter says of the nomination.
She credits her former teachers, from Pre-K all the way through 12th grade, with her drive to become a teacher. Tschetter says each inspired her, made her love learning, and instilled in her a desire to do the same for other students. “Having the opportunity to witness growth within my students in such a difficult year has been the most rewarding part of being a teacher,” she says. “It’s rewarding to see students grasp a concept that we’ve been working hard to understand or when their faces light up when they make a good grade on a test.” Tschetter says her first class has taught her several things about who she is as a person and who she wants to be as a teacher. “I am a totally different teacher than I was at the start of this year. I have learned to roll with things and not fret about the small stuff.” She hopes her students remember two things when they move on to third grade: “to always be kind to others and that it’s cooler to be someone who includes rather than excludes.”
Ellen Tschetter received her bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Auburn University. She teaches math, reading, science, and social studies at Hidden Lake Primary School in Dothan.

Don’t Forget About RSV
15,
d ee d
om
Keep a close eye on your infant or child if he/she develops what seems to be a simple cold. Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) is a common respiratory virus that seems to have been forgotten because of COVID-19. Some of the most common COVID-19 symptoms mimic RSV: fever, cough, shortness of breath, headache, and fatigue. RSV is the most common cause of severe lower respiratory tract disease among infants and children under age 2 and is especially serious for infants under 6 months, premature babies, and children with immune system deficiencies or underlying heart or lung disease. RSV can lead to hospitalization or even become lifethreatening. In Alabama, RSV season runs OctoberApril, and we have seen a spike in cases since the start of spring. RSV is highly contagious, entering the body through the eyes, nose, or mouth via secretions from a cough or sneeze. An infected child is most contagious during the first 72 hours after infection. RSV usu-
ally causes mild symptoms like cough, runny nose, sore throat, and fever. However, it can progress to high fever, wheezing, severe cough, rapid breathing, and decreased oxygen levels. In these cases, the infant or child may have developed bronchiolitis or pneumonia. Infant symptoms are harder to predict. Rapid breathing and cough are common in infants, but some will show no respiratory signs and simply have decreased appetite, irritability, and low energy. Thick nasal secretions with RSV can make it difficult for infants to eat and breathe. Parents should take the infant or child to the doctor if he/she struggles to breathe or cannot take fluids. RSV is diagnosed with a nasal swab, with results typically available within minutes. There is no specific treatment and antibiotics are generally not needed. Tylenol or Motrin help ease symptoms along with plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration. There is a vaccine for RSV, Synagis, which works by providing antibodies and is
9
administered monthly during peak months of RSV season. Infants and children under 2 who are premature or have underlying heart/ lung conditions are candidates for the vaccine, which is almost always covered by insurance. A child who receives Synagis may still get RSV, but it may be more of a mild case with hospitalization avoided. Many prevention measures for RSV are simple: Wash your hands frequently, especially if you are taking care of an infant; keep surfaces clean; limit exposure to tobacco and other smoke; limit contact with people who are sick, and wash toys regularly. Dr. David J. Lozano joined Dothan Pediatric Healthcare Network specializing in pediatric pulmonology at Dothan Pediatric Subspecialty Clinic in January, 2018. He is certified in general pediatrics by the American Board of Pediatrics and is certified in pediatric pulmonology by the Pediatric Pulmonary Medicine Board of the American Board of Pediatrics. He is also certified by the Sleep Medicine Board of the American Board of Pediatrics.

Parents want to do the best they can when it comes to their kids. The majority of our time and effort goes towards supporting and taking care of our children. We work hard to make sure our kids are happy and healthy. Why do we often end up feeling like our best efforts still aren’t enough?
Here are some tips that can change your perspective and help you realize that you are enough for your kids. Stop the comparisons The biggest trap parents fall into is comparing yourself to others. This is unfair because no two parents are the same and no family situation or child is the same. What works for you may not work for another family and each family’s values, dynamic, and interests are different. Because of this, comparisons are not worth worrying over. In the age of social media, it can be hard not to think everyone has a picture-perfect life but it’s important to remember that social media only shows you a picture, often staged and filtered, and is not a true reflection of their daily lives.
Reality check Sometimes we all need to give ourselves a reality check. Remember, all
I choose the activity I enjoy more, my kids get quality time with me that we both enjoy. Be honest with yourself about your expectations for your kids and for yourself. Do your best with what you have and enjoy it along the way.
siblings have conflict, all kids throw tantrums, all houses get messy, and all parents get tired. Things are never perfect for anyone. It is wise to remember this when you start to get down about a situation that is making you feel like you aren’t enough. Reaching out to a friend, you will often find that they too experience similar situations. It is nice to have the camaraderie that comes from knowing that they are experiencing the same battles in their life too.
One way to change your perspective from negative to positive is to start counting your blessings. It is so easy to focus on negatives when the great things going on in your life are passing you by. Start by listing five blessings per day. Write them down. When you are feeling down go back and read them and you will most likely feel an attitude boost in no time.
Do what you love
Your child loves you
Some people are great at interior design, some love craft projects, others have culinary skills, and still others are efficient and organized. We may strive to be the best at all of these things to our families, but it usually doesn’t work out that way. Focus on what you love and enjoy those things with your family. There is no reason to beat yourself up over things you do not enjoy. Sometimes when I feel like my best is not enough it is because I put too many expectations on myself. I do not enjoy craft projects, so why do I feel the need to do them with my kids? I do enjoy cooking and having my kids help me. If
One of the most important things to remember is that your kids love you. Even when you are tired, overworked, overlooked, and feel like your best is not enough, your kids will love you anyway. They love spending time with you. They love your gifts and quirks. They may not always act appreciative or show their love in an obvious way, but they do love you. The consistency, support, and love that you show them every day does not go to waste. It is enough. WP

Strabismus (Crossed Eyes) A Common Eye Disorder In Children As a parent, you are the first to notice when something doesn’t seem right with your child. Strabismus is a common condition in children in which the eyes do not properly align with each other. You may notice that your child’s eyes look in different directions at the same time. He/she may close one eye or tilt their head when looking at an object to bring objects into focus. The condition may be constant or intermittent in nature. Causes of strabismus can include nerve injury or dysfunction of the muscles controlling the eye or sinus issues. It can affect boys and girls at an early age. If you notice your child’s eyes are moving inward or outward, or has difficulty focusing on objects, and/or the eyes seem to be crossed, seek a thorough examination from a Pediatric Ophthalmologist. Sometimes referred to as “crossed eyes,” strabismus can be corrected with early treatment, but it is important to catch it early. Several treatment options exist to align the eyes that
our team at Eye Center South can perform. Those options include the use of eyeglasses or eye patching, eye exercises, eyedrops or surgery. Surgery is performed in an outpatient surgery center, and most children resume their daily activity within 2-3 days. It should be noted that strabismus is different from amblyopia (also known as lazy eye). Amblyopia can be caused by unequal refractive errors, crossed eyes, misaligned eyes and more. The most common technique for lazy eye is patching, where a patch is placed over the good eye to encourage the development of better vision in the eye that is experiencing difficulties. Like strabismus, amblyopia can affect children at a relatively young age. Patching should begin as early as possible and can be effective for children at almost any age. If the child is old enough to understand, we suggest parents explain to him or her the reason the patch is being used. It may be helpful to demonstrate the patching on a doll or a Teddy bear.
The good news about eye issues that are common in children is most are treatable when detected early. At Eye Center South, we have the experience and knowledge necessary to help diagnose and treat children with any eye challenge. Our physicians and staff are committed to providing the highest quality, compassionate care for you and your family. We specialize in surgery and diseases of the eye for all ages and work closely with your optometrist to provide the best vision outcomes. Learn more at www.eyecentersouth.net or call 800-467-1393.

What’s the Best Game Console for Kids? If your kids are at the age where you’re considering buying a game console, now might be the right time. Whether you want the immersive virtual reality of the Sony PlayStation or the portability of the Nintendo Switch, today’s consoles offer more realism, interactivity, and flexibility than ever before. The question still remains: Which console is best for your family’s needs?
Best for Families with Young Kids: Nintendo Switch/Switch Lite With games such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons, Super Mario Party, and Ring Fit Adventure, as well as cool activity packs such as the Labo Toy-Con Variety Kit, Nintendo maintains its position as the best option for families to use together. The Switch works both as a stationary console that plugs into your TV and a portable gaming device with two built-in controllers and a touchscreen. The recently released Switch Lite, on the other hand, uses the same games as the Switch, but it’s strictly a portable station that’s designed only for gaming on the go. While the Switch library does offer its share of mature games, the consoles include parental controls so you can help your kids regulate their use. Check out the Best Nintendo Switch Games for Kids.
Best for Tweens and Families: Microsoft Xbox One S and Sony PlayStation 4 These may be the basic systems from Microsoft and Sony, but they’re still very powerful and run all of the games that you can get your hands on. One of
Microsoft Xbox Series X, Microsoft Xbox Series S, Sony PlayStation 5, Sony PlayStation Pro, Sony PlayStation VR If your kids are really passionate about games, then these machines are the best -- if not the only -- choices. At the high end of the price range and advanced features are the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5, which are ultrafast and provide super-realistic graphics.
Microsoft unveiled two systems in November 2020: the Xbox Series X, and the smaller Series S. While both can play the latest titles, the Series S was designed to be all-digital -- without a disc drive -- while the Series X was designed to be the most powerful game console ever made. Both benefited from Microsoft’s dedication to backward compatibility, meaning any game bought for any Microsoft console can be played on either machine. Check out our favorite Xbox Series X/S Games for Kids. Sony’s most powerful system to date, the PlayStation 5, launched in November 2020, as well, becoming one of the most sought-after systems that holiday season. It could play both PlayStation 4 games and the latest releases for the system, and could present visuals in 4K resolution, meaning players received jaw-dropping visuals as they played the latest releases. Keep in mind that, though there are plenty of games for each console designed for tweens and younger, the vast majority of Xbox and PlayStation games are intense and mature. But there are still plenty of titles to get players’ hearts pumping, whether it’s the manic rhythm of Just Dance 2021, the off-road racing of Dirt 5, or the stadium-rocking noise of FIFA 21. Sony has the edge for virtual reality with its PlayStation VR headset designed to work with the PS4 and PS4 Pro. PSVR provides a totally immersive, virtual reality game experience. There’s a number of impressive games for the headset, like the anti-bullying-themed Concrete Genie, the colorful and entertaining links of Everybody’s Golf VR, and the soaring adventure of Falcon Age. For more game suggestions, take a look at our list of Thought-Provoking and Nonviolent Games for Tweens and Teens, Nonviolent Games for PS4, Nonviolent Games for Xbox One, and the best video games for teens.

the big advantages is that you can often find these machines bundled with a few games to play along with the system. Xbox One S is a better choice for families who already own a lot of Xbox games, as it will play some Xbox 360 titles. If you’re tired of discs cluttering things up, consider the Xbox One S All-Digital Edition console which stores all your games in the cloud. The PS4, by contrast, provides access to older PS3 games through its digital store and its PS Now service. Of course, violent games such as Resident Evil 3, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Wolfenstein: Youngblood are available for each, but so are family-friendly titles such as The Lego Marvel Collection, Madden NFL 21, and The Jackbox Party Pack 7. Plus, both systems contain parental controls with customizable family settings to control screen time and purchase limits, as well as content filters to block inappropriate games for kids.

Whether across the country or just across town, moving is a big adjustment for everyone in the family. Children, in particular, can feel overwhelmed and uprooted because they are rarely in control of the decision to change homes, neighborhoods, or schools.
Here are some tips to help parents support their kids through the transition. Wiregrass Parents I June 2021

Talk it over
As early as possible, start preparing your child for the move by letting them know where, when, and why you are making the move. Let them know you understand that this may be upsetting or scary to them, but it is also an exciting and a fun adventure you will do together. Give them the opportunity to talk through their feelings and make sure they know they have permission to be sad, angry, excited, or scared, sometimes all at the same time!
A Better Morning starts with these 3 steps
Take a tour
When house hunting try to involve kids as much as possible. This will help them feel a part of the decision. Let them tour possible homes with you and give their opinions. If this is not possible, let them be a part of the decisions after you have it narrowed down to a few contenders. Give them the chance to pick their bedroom and play spaces. Some kids may enjoy decorating or adding new pieces to their room while others prefer keeping the familiar things from the previous home.
Maintain routines
Once the move is complete, it is important to maintain similar routines as in the previous house. This will help kids feel safer in their new environment. Parents should also be aware that regression in potty training, behavior, and sleep are totally normal for kids to go through when they are experiencing significant transitions in their lives. Try to be consistent and patient while they adjust to their new surroundings.
Foster friendships
One of the most positive things
Start your day with 16-32 oz. of water! Yes, even before your coffee.
Take at least 1 minute being mindful - meditation, breath work, journaling, or even a little yoga stretch.

about moving is the opportunity to make new friends. Parents can make moving easier by helping their kids meet new people. Host a playdate, get involved in sports or other activities, take a plate of cookies to the neighbors, and introduce yourself to other families at the neighborhood park. It can be hard for kids (and parents) to step out of their comfort zone, but once you have made some friends and acquaintances it is easier to feel at home in a new place. Parents should also encourage their children to continue friendships from their previous home as much as possible. Just because there is

more distance between friends does not mean the relationship has to end. Moving is a challenge not just for the kids but for the parents too. Try to set an example for your kids by acknowledging sad feelings while keeping a positive attitude and embracing your new neighborhood. It can also help to explain that while the place you live may change, the important things won’t - your family will be together and you will always love each other no matter where you live. MM: I would say we are authoritative, truthfully. We set rules and reasonable expectations in our home and if there is ever a need for punishment, we follow through as consistently as possible. I wouldn’t say we are strict, but we’re not indifferent to our children. We also try our best to be respectful of the big feelings our girls have. We do not ever punish our girls for their feelings, and we do not belittle them when they need help working through hard moments. WP: Father’s Day is coming up. How would you describe your husband’s relationship with the girls?
Megan McConvery
MM: Tanner has an excellent relationship with our girls. He’s incredibly nurturing and sensitive with them. When he’s home from the fire department, he’s addressing their needs just the same as I am. He hung the moon and stars in both of their eyes.
WP: On top of being a mom, you’ve been working while pursuing your nursing degree, and you’ve recently welcomed another daughter into the family...all during a pandemic! Whew, I’m tired just thinking about all that. How are you avoiding (or even addressing) burnout?
WP: Are you guys united in your parenting approach? MM: Absolutely. We had many talks about how we’d like to parent before we ever got pregnant, and while our parenting style has certainly evolved- we have always evolved together. We respect each other’s opinions tenfold. WP: Summer is officially here. What are you and your family looking forward to this year? MM: We are looking forward to a big family road trip we’re taking at the end of May! We’re going to New Jersey, New York, and back down to DC before we circle back this way. Additionally, my oldest will be home with me all summer and I am looking forward to taking her to the Wiregrass Museum of Art, the Carver Museum, Landmark Park, the DABG, and to her favorite place- Dothan Nurseries.
MM: This was a hard question for me to answer even for myself. Truthfully, I have not been addressing my burnout. I have been living in BurnOut City since I found out I was pregnant with Olive. Now don’t get me wrong - we were so excited for our second baby girl. No amount of exhaustion could ever change the joy we feel over being a family of four. My contingency plan for the summer is to focus on myself before the rest of my family- which sounds and feels selfish, but I cannot pour from an empty cup. I plan to address my own basic needs and grow from there with how I’m taking care of myself... so I can continue to take good care of my girls.
WP: This month we’re welcoming new families to the Wiregrass. As a lifelong resident, what would you say is the best thing about living here? MM: Oh, the food hands down. I love Southern food, and we are blessed in this area with some of the best Southern cuisine. WP: What’s something you hope your children are learning from you, even if it’s not a direct lesson?
WP: You decided to change careers and pursue your passion. What message do you hope your girls absorb from your journey?
MM: I want my girls to speak kindness to others and themselves, but to never lose sight of their own needs and to never be afraid of standing up for themselves and others. I don’t want them to be doormats. I am raising them to think for themselves, to be independent, and to love others as best as they can.
MM: I want my girls to see that life’s path is fluid. It doesn’t have to be straight and narrow, and it doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s to be fulfilling. I want them to trust their gut instincts and always do what makes them happy without worrying about what other people might think.
WP: If you could give your younger self a piece of advice, what would it be?
WP: You are very open about the way you’re raising your girls and your expectations for how others should treat them. What’s your main goal in this outspokenness?
MM: I would for sure tell my younger self to never bother with what anyone else thinks. I would tell her to be true to her values and to follow her dreams- not anyone else’s- and to avoid the “comfortable” option every now and then.
MM: Equality, mainly. It is not news that women are treated differently than men, by men, or even by other women because of their own internalized misogyny. I never want my children to suffer at the hands of outdated stereotypes or gendered expectations.
Megan McConvery is a nursing student and Nurse Tech II at Southeast Health Hospital. She and her husband, Tanner, have been married 6 1/2 years. They have
