Saturday Market of Chandapura is well known and is very famous around the surrounding areas. Its location attracts many people to the market. That is from Bangalore city to Tamil Nadu which is not only the neighbouring state but is also closely situated to the market. People not only get fresh fruits and vegetables but they also get groceires. Even cattle is sold in the market. The customers visiting this market are mostly the city dwellers. The commodities are highly priced in the city comparetive to the low price and fresh commodites available in the market.

STALL LAYOUT

Buit Stalls: The people have stalls built in by the governement. These stalls were divided into cells and equally parted for each vendor. These stalls are on rental basis. The stalls have well cemented raised platforms and have a roof to protect from the rain or the sun.

The Lack Of Storage Space: As the rent based system is a little tough for the vendors to pay and use two cells the stalls facing outside have ample space. The vendors extend the shop by adding a temporary tarpoline as their roof. This has been a successful way to store their goods.

Old stalls: The old stalls built with long stones as columns and asbestos sheet as the roof with muddy flooring are available. All these places are also on rental basis. The stalls are priced according the cell provided. The size of the space occupied here matters.

Open Space With Only Raised Platform: These stalls are surprisingly almost share a similar space by every vendor. The space here is divided with no physical barriers. They are temporarily made out of the tarpoline flooring or the tarpoline roof .

HIGHER PRICED STALLS

Stalls On The Path: These stalls are built on the path leading to the market. The road is wide enough to accomodate stalls made of tarpoline on both sides and a small tempo can easily travel in this lane. People here do not have a raised platform here. Manmade flooring and roofing.

Stalls On The Platform: These platforms are similar to the one befor but are priced higher in rent because of the placement in the plan of the market. These stalls are in the enterance of the market thus attracts more customers then any other stall placed in between. They are an easy reach.

NON RENTAL STORES

Stalls In The Ground Front Of The Market: Eventhough these grounds are not for putting up stalls they are used by the people. Bribes to the policemen are a common action. And people don’t mind paying compared to the profit they get in the market.

Stalls On The Main Road: Eventhough it is not allowed to use this space people put up the fruit stalls here. Only fruits are available here because of the high price and the profit they get from the highway travellers. The bribes are higher out on the main road then the stalls on the ground.

VEGETABLES The vegetables which are mostly sold in all the shops are tomatoes, potatoes, beans, bittergourd, drumsticks, raddish, carrot, brinjals, ladysfinger, garlic, onion, cauliflower, cabbage etc. All these vegetables are brought from Tamil Nadu. The people selling vegetables here are mostly from the nearby villages . Most of them are from the neighbouring state Tamil Nadu. The people grow and sell them in this market for a good price and profit. As there is no involment of middle men in this market the prices are very reasonable and they are also very fresh from the farm.

FRUITS Most of the fruits are transported from the Tamil Nadu or is from the Fruit Market a few kilometers away. The fruit market is a place were fruits are brought in wholesale. The wholesale is very cheap. But due to the presence of middle men the prices are very high on the fruits for the customers. But certain fruits which are farm fresh such as banana, papaya, custardapples etc are of lower in price.

CATTLE The cattle sold here are lambs and goats outside the market next to the main road ( NH 7). The lambs and goats are either taken for poultry for milk in the neary villages or its taken for meat. Certain lambs were also taken for sacrifice to god from here. They were sold by poultry owners. The proud owners of the goat transported their sheeps and goat in the truck. It was also a kind of matter of wealth and prestige for the people in the village. They were similarly counted like a property i.e like gold or lands that they posses.

DRY FISH The dry fish section had lots varities. This was prepared by the people who did not even eat the dry fish. It was only sold by the people as a profession. The dry fish was prepared at home in the six days available for them and brought on the seventh day for sales. This was a convineant profession because dry fish does not go bad in time. Fresh fish rapidly deteriorates unless some way can be found to preserve it. Drying is a method of food preservation that works by removing water from the food, which inhibits the growth of microorganisms.

TRANSPORTATION OF GOODS Cars, mopeds, auto were the common transport. Mopeds are the most common transport. The goods which are transported by trucks are usuallly by the vendors. There are huge number of trucks which bring in all the goods. They are made to stand in line outside the market on the road.

TYPES OF BALANCES Manual balance: This was commonly used balance in all the stalls. The weighing was done approximately with the vegetables or fruits with weights. There were diffferent weights of 1kgs, 500gms, 250gms and100gms.The red marker when comes in between shows that the weight is equal on both sides.

TYPES OF BALANCES Electronic balance: This balance was not used in all stalls. This balance gave an accurate measure of the commodities and people preffered to use this because there is no cheating and true amount can be calculated in this machine.

VENDORS

Thimmaya: He is a vendor who sold only tomatoes in the market. He works by travelling around in the cart selling the rest of the tomatoes which are not sold in the market. He still makes a larger profit in the market because of customers. He and his family are able to afford a proper living with their profits.

Kadambi: She is a vendor who owns a small grocery store in Anekal. Every Saturday she sets a small grocery store in one of the cell. She and her son brings down all the goods in a moped. She also uses an electronic balance. She says that chandapura market has been quite profitable for her and her family.

VENDORS

Aadalarsu: Is a vendor in the market who grows vegetables in hs farm. He stays in the nearby village of Heelalige. He brings his crops in a bullock cart every saturday. He and his family work in the two acres fields and sell their crops for a living in the market.

Chinnapa: He is a vendor who sells various types of green leafy vegetables. He grows them in his farm and sells them in the market. He brings his son and his wife to the market every Saturday. The rest of the days he sells his commodities in the localities by carrying a basket on his head.

SUNDAY MEAT MARKET This market is set only on Sunday. This is exclusive meat market where chicken, pork, mutton and fish are available. The meat products like mutton, pork and chicken are sold in huge quanitites to the customers. There are stalls which are built exclusively for the butchers and are not for any other purposes. The fish has been brought from the nearby lake i.e the chandapura lake. One of the attractive point of this market is the live fish. These live fishes are killed and given fresh to the customer. The cleaninf of the fish is all done by the vendor. Compared to the cities the meat is sold in a very reasonable rate and is also very fresh. The customers point of interest is also considered i.e people’s choice of pieces are also considered.

MISCELLANEOUS COMMODITIES

The sweet stall is in the enterance of the market is very attractive and mouth watering. As there is a temple next to this sweet shop it is also convineant for people to buy sweets here and distribute as prasadam. But here they also produce for mass production especially for special functions. Three people manage the shop. Fresh sweets like jalebi, ladoo, mysore pak are prepared in this shop. There is a man always preparing mouth watering jalebis fresh out of sugar syrup.

Other commodity which we find common set up in small stools are the aggarbathi’s. They are prepared in the house by the family all day long. The fragrance is put on the stick and then packed. These are sold in the market. Varities are available and are for very low profit prices. The grocery stores are set up in a very few places but almost everything is available in this place. All the necessity cooking commodities are available and quite a good profit is made because of its scarcity.

The availablity of pooja products are in many places. As it is festive season sale of these prodcts are quite good. Beetle leaves are also brought by people who chew beetle leaves or pan store wala’s are their customers. There was only one stall selling utensils made of stainless steel. She sold a variety of daily use necessary utensils. The most important place in the market is the types of knives, sickles, various instruments for farming and cooking was sold. He was the black-smith. All the instruments which required the need of iron was made by the black-smith. He had made handles in wood for heating purpose instruments. Almost all the neceesary farming tools are available here. Even dosa and making pans were available.

ON THE OTHER DAYS OF THE WEEK On all other days of the week. The market is abondoned on all other days of the week with only stray dogs. Goats and cows graze around to eat the left over rotting vegetables. Few poeple use the cell to sleep. And few others laze over in the empty stalls.

MARKETS ROLE IN THE LIVES OF THE PEOPLE 1. Few vendors solely depend on this weekly market for some profit making. 2. Certain vendors work all week and set their buisness only on this day. 3. For poor vendors who are solely dependent on what they grow this market is a wonderful way of selling their cultivation without any middlemen involed in between. 4. Therefore this market can give wonderful profits to the vendors. 5. For the customers this is a one stop place. 6. The market is quite reasonabily priced. 7. People get fresh commodities here and can buy with no hesita tion. 8. Bargaining is a language followed in many markets. And in this market it is quite easily spoken language between the vendor and the vendee.

GOVERNMENTAL MEASURES The government has made a wonderful contribution in making this market a big success. This market has been happening successfuly for more than twenty years and this has been a very peaceful place with no fights due to the great understanding of the people. The government provided the poeple with stalls with good lighting system and also provided them with sanitary requirements. The rental based system with rates convineant for a vendor with daily profit is very good system. The cemented structures and roofing is something every market requires because of the climate and this factor has been convineantly satisfied for the poeple in the market by the government. Most of the time it is an understanding based sharing of space and this can rise to small or major conflicts. To avoid such situation there is a police station rite in front of the market. There is also a post office next to it where money orders or money can be saved from what they have earned. The governements contribution has been very well apprecited by the people but the demand for more cells because the market has been also expanding over time.

CONCLUSION The market is an asset to the economy and is also the measure of bringing the small scale buisnessman to sell their commodities with no loss. People benefit from both the sides as a vendee and a vendor. Therefore the sucess of the market is being rejoiced untill now by all the reglulars. Not only the normal citizens but as a government aided market it runs really successfully. Eventhough there are several complaints from the vendors on whats not right here and there, the government aid here is highly appreciable. Therefore such markets should be appreciated by all in the society and help in the upbringing of such markets. By supporting these kind of markets we support and help many families involed directly or indirectly. Therfore, the Chandapura Market is a huge example for a successlful asset to the society and is an example for many other markets which can be developed in future with more planing.
