President s Message June 2015 Summer is here! In November of last year I wrote “with immeasurable efforts and limitless support the phase one financial goal for our Crestwood Community Parkland Redevelopment has not only been met but surpassed! Meeting this goal is reason for every one of us to celebrate!” As a community we have much to celebrate as we continue to receive donations for the next phases of our Parkland Redevelopment. The Parkland Redevelopment Committee is focused on building a Community League Park for all, with the hope of celebrating our 100 th birthday in our “new” gathering place. We continue to work on traffic calming measures within our Community. We have received a grant allowing us to implement energy saving measures in our Hall and the surrounding area; with consideration being given to viable solar options. Soccer is in full swing, and we’ve fielded more teams than the previous year! A sure sign that we’re in for a great season filled with many fun experiences and love of sport. We have not received any information (as of print) regarding the snow blading pilot project. We’ll be sure to update the CCL website with any update. Our neighborhood landscape continues to evolve, and with the many changes to building bylaws etc. we can expect to see permit requests for split lots and “narrow houses’. If you have any questions or concerns please contact the city, or email me. We’ll do our best to answer any questions. In September, we have some ‘no charge” time slots at the hall open to accommodate any Crestwood community groups that are looking for space. Please email your CCL Programs Director for more information. I would like to take this opportunity to extend a very heartfelt thank you to Sandra Davis for her many years as our Crestwood Community League Social Director. Sandra has worked tirelessly to provide us all with many amazing events throughout her term. Christmas parties, formals, fund raisers, BBQ’s, kids parties; Sandra selflessly has done it all. Sandra will continue to work with the Parkland Redevelopment Committee, and is willing to train and mentor anyone willing to take on the role as Social Director. Please call or email me personally if you have any questions. Thank you Sandra, we are all so grateful to you for setting the table for us to come together and celebrate as a community. Please consider volunteering for our board. There are a few positions open. We meet every second Thursday of the month and we don’t meet in the summer. Have a safe and sunny summer, Dave
Winter Parking Ban survey A Winter parking ban survey hit your mailbox the week of May 11 asking you to use a computer to fill it out. We are asking those of you without a computer to call 311 or Andrew Knack at either number to express your opinion on the winter parking pilot and the survey 780-267-1442 (780) 496-8122 office

PARKLAND REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT Project Update i i
i i
The CPRC has been awarded $250,000 from the City of Edmonton’s Neighborhood Parkland Development Program (NPDP)! The site development plan for Phase 1 is currently being developed by the City of Edmonton. It will be shared with the CPRC at the end of May. It will include refined budget estimates so that fundraising targets can be revisited. The Community Facility Enhancement Program (CFEP) grant application for $125,000 was submitted to province of Alberta; the CPRC is awaiting a decision. The CPRC will consult with the community regarding Phase 1 in the coming months.
The CPRC has launched a new website to keep residents up to date on project information, fundraising and community consultation –

PARKLAND REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT Upcoming Events Community consultation for Phase 1 of the park redevelopment (the playground) is expected soon and will continue into the fall. We need your input so watch for advertising of events on Crestwood’s Facebook page, the CPRC website (www.crestwood100years.ca) and signs at the community hall.
Fundraising As the details for each phase are finalized the costs associated will become more exact. The costs for completion of Phase 1 will be refined by the City of Edmonton by the end of May. This will enable the CPRC to better establish fundraising targets and develop plans to ensure funds are in place to undertake the redevelopment. Based on preliminary estimates, by raising at least $169,000 through community donations (individual, corporate or foundation) and $100,000 from the Crestwood Community League, the committee will be able to leverage these funds for government grants (city and provincial) to raise the $1.22 million total necessary for Phases 1 and 2. If additional funds are raised, elements of Phase 3 can also be constructed.
So far, we have raised over $232,000 in community donations! Additional funds are still needed for future phases.
MAKE YOUR DONATION TO THE REDEVELOPMENT PROJECT TODAY! Donations over the course of fundraising will be cumulative – this allows for monthly or annual contributions to be appropriately recognized. Donations may be made by cash, cheque (Crestwood Community League Building Society) or on-line. On-line donations can be made at www.crestwood100years.ca.

Crestwood Community League 5th Annual Crestwood Big Bin Event 2015 May 2. 9 am – 5 pm Final report Statistics Five shifts of volunteers over 9 hours helped to load 8560 kg of waste into five bins and ECO designated waste. (no tonnage avail for Eco) Partners City of Edmonton Capital City Cleanup BFI‐‐‐ Progressive Waste Out of Site Hauling Edmonton Waste Management Thank you to Diana Steele, Rod Matheson, Brian Cooke, Betty Grynoch, Angelee Zon, Sheila Crotty Elizabeth Stephen, Doug Densmore, Kyla Feschuk and Laurie Hepper for volunteering for this event. The main jobs are to check memberships upon lot entry and sell memberships to Crestwood residents not having one. The other job is to supervise the lot and make sure traffic flows counter clockwise and does not jam up. Our lot is too small to have more than three vehicles maneuvering at once, but people understood and things went smooth. Our Crestwood School volunteers: Alan Han & Oliver monitored the four ECO stations set up making sure that the items being dropped off were placed in the correct zone. The volunteer hours these young people worked were very important to the smooth running of the event and the Event Planners job was much more relaxing not to mention the ECO load up went smooth at the end of the day. Thank you so much. The ECO load up crew at the end of the day was Doug Densmore & Laurie Hepper helping Jason and from OUT O F SITE hauling load up. Load up was finished by 6 pm just in time for the hail storm to wash down the parking lot. This year we tried two bins in tandem to fill as the wait times to trade full bins last year was exacerbated by Road construction in Sherwood park and the construction is still creating delays for this year. While this constricted the lot a bit it allowed us to move to an empty bin if the truck did not get back in time. Loads are approximate only, volunteers may have missed counting some visits.

We had approximately 86 visits for disposal during the day. Almost everyone had something for the ECO this year. Although we did not get the announcement into the newsletter the Sign and Website and Facebook page had mention of the event had listed items acceptable for drop off. We sold 15 memberships that day and many memberships were flashed from internet purchase. We did have some treasures re‐‐‐owned by diligent volunteers. The amount of items diverted to the ECO load up was significant and Jason was able to fill up his trailer and truck and the end of the day. Small electronics was a significant pile. We definitely had the ECO better sorted and defined this year to make the loading less time consuming. Everyone who used the service of local waste collection for Crestwood Community League Members was supportive of this being a yearly event and FOR Crestwood League MEMBERS ONLY. Many volunteers availed themselves of the BIN and ECO before or after their shift. The longest wait time was 5‐‐‐10 minutes and that was a wait while the bin transfer was taking place. Most of the day the loads came steady and were quite often waved immediately into the lot with no wait time. Sometimes we could get two vehicles unloading at the same time. We had people arriving on foot pushing and carrying items again this year. Many people came multiple times with loads dumped as they cleaned up inside their garages and homes. The yard waste was up again as spring came early and spring clean ups were underway. Next year the event is again in early May. Make a note to start your clean up early next year and even think about volunteering for 2 hours, it is a great service to the community and without volunteers it would not be possible to keep this event going. Again thank you to all the volunteers who helped to make this a great event. Many thanks again to Jason who generously donated Time, Energy and Equipment free of charge to the community to help with this day. If you have junk or stuff to haul give Jason a call.
