Introduction to Nosework Step Two

So, you have heard about Nosework, and now you’re thinking, “What do I need to do that sport?” Well, if you have a dog (preferably a Keeshond) and your dog has a nose – YOU ARE 99% THERE! If you read our article in KeeshondWorld December 2011 and Our Introduction to Nosework in March 2012, you know that Nosework is a great game to play with your dog, teaching them to do what comes naturally – sniff out a scent. We are going to take you through the basics of teaching your Keeshond to search for food. I think we all know that it doesn’t take too much to teach our breed to search for food anywhere, anytime! In my Intro to Nosework, we talked about putting the boxes in a row, placing the food in one of the boxes and letting your dog search for the food. You are not going to make it quite so obviously for the dog from now on. Don’t let the dog see the box that you put out. Keep them crated until it is their turn to play.

Does his breathing change, does he snort when he finds the food? Does his head whip around when he starts to pass the food box and he gets a whiff? That’s the ideal that we look for, almost like a double take and a run straight back to the food box. Be sure to get in there right away, open the box and reward him for his efforts.

When you bring your dog out to do the search, give him 10-20 seconds to stand a look at the area he will be searching. Often the dog will catch a whiff of the food and will head straight to the food box. In a Nosework trial, you have a little time at the start line to let your dog get the lay of the land.

Sometimes the food will be in the first box, and the dogs will completely bypass that first box and head down the row searching. When your dog comes down the row, if he wants to skip the food box on the end (and has done this numerous times), walk down past the food box, and give your dog a chance to come by the box again.

You can start making different configurations for the boxes. Put out two rows of boxes, three rows of boxes, a semicircle, etc. You will find that different dogs have different searching methods. Some dogs will zigzag right and left, some will search straight up the row and some will be all over the place. Let your dog take the lead. It will be your job to try to remember where your dog has searched and where he has missed. Don’t talk to your dog while he is searching. You want your dog’s focus to be on the hunt, not on you. Observe how your dog goes up and down the rows (or around in a circle of boxes).

This is a great time to start videotaping your runs with your dog. There will be lots to learn about how your dog searches. The sooner you start observing your dog (as well as other dogs’ hunting methods), the better handler you will become. The key to success is that in the beginning, you know where the food is and you get in there immediately to reward your dog. Dogs are very much “it’s all about me”. They want the food reward and the quicker you get them the reward, the more eager they will be to play Nosework.

The next step would be to start adding some new distractions to the mix. Now you might want to use a food bowl. Add some chairs, a table on its side, baskets, orange cones, etc., anything you may have around the house, training facility or wherever you are working. There will still be boxes, but the food won’t necessarily be in the box. It may be on the floor behind the table (make sure the food is accessible and that nothing is going to fall on your dog. Be smart when you set up your searches – your dog’s safety is all important). He needs to be able hunt among these new components without getting hurt. One more thing to remember, your dog NEEDS to be successful to gain confidence in this game. They also will need to gain in endurance. That takes quite a long time. Don’t be impatient. It is natural for your dog’s interest to wane if the hunt is too difficult. My dog has been doing Nosework for almost three years. She has her NW1 title, and we have done our first NW2 trial (some parts were successful, and some not so much). The dogs we train with are just now gaining endurance for the hunt. They will hunt much longer now than they did at the early stages of the game. Please be patient with your dog. You want to challenge them, but not make it so hard that they want to give up. Find the middle ground.

Unlike other venues, going back and reinforcing a simpler game is always a positive step. So while you are doing a little more complicated search, going back to a simple line box search with an easy hide increases the dog’s drive. Right now, we are almost exclusively doing hides where we know where the hide is so that as soon as our dog finds the hide, we can get in there with a reward. Of course, we are working on scent, so the timing of rewards is all important. However, we still take a step back and do a hide with food on top, so the dog self-rewards. This cannot be stressed enough – anytime your dog is struggling, step back and do an easy hide, build confidence, drive, and have fun with your dog. For some of us in the dog world, OCD could stand for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, but when it relates to our dogs movement, we are introduced to a whole new world of graded lameness. With this in mind, one begins to wonder about the terminology, so simplified; Osteochondrosis – is a disturbance in the normal alignment of cells as they mature into articulating cartilage and can be seen as a ripple or thickening of the cartilage surface.

Osteochondrosis dessicans – is a disruption in the articulating cartilage that may develop into a flap, which can further dissect away from its underlying subchondral attachment leaving a lesion behind and a floating piece of cartilage in the joint.

Common sites are the shoulder, elbow, stifle and hock joints. Although other synovial joints can be involved, these four sites are the most common when lameness is involved. It can affect one joint only, be bilateral and or affect multiple joints. Known causes have shown that; Heredity – is having a predisposition through either paternal or maternal lines. Conformation – skeletal abnormalities causing repeated microtraumas.

However, Rapid growth, Trauma and Dietary factors have also been considered as causative factors. But some current studies do not support these previously accepted findings with some having created a hot debate amongst known authors. Consequently, heredity and conformation are the two most noted causative factors and certainly an area where we as breeders can easily recognise and therefore, make the crucial decisions in our breeding programs to stamp out this insidious disease!

Always the gentlemen, Colonel and Scout travelled cross country in the RV with my peeps, Beth, Carissa and Sutter to attend the National in Oregon. Feeding Your Puppy "Nutrition is never black or white, but many changing shades of grey"

Part A: Kibble Introduction Growth is a complex process involving metabolic changes, environmental influences, genetics, nutrition and unknown factors. The eventual size of the dog is determined by its genetics, but the age it reaches its adult size can be in part controlled by nutrition. The only nutritional trial to follow Labs from weaning to death was done by Purina. Although flawed, this trial gave us insight into in the role that nutrition plays in growth. They took two groups of puppies and fed one group all the food they could eat in a 15-minute period per day, over their lifetime. The second group was fed 25% less. The initial diet was Purina Puppy Chow; the adult diet was Purina Dog Chow. The onset of hip dysplasia and arthritis was delayed in the second group; the second group lived significantly longer.

Caloric Intake:

As a Small Animal Nutrition professor at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine, I have witnessed many changes within the pet food industry over the past 14 years. These changes have not always been related to the improved nutritional value of pet foods. To increase their market share, the multinationals that manufacture pet foods are buying smaller profitable companies and have developed sophisticated marketing strategies that are centralized around the humanization of our pets.

Period 2 moderate growth: 16 weeks to 24 weeks (113 to168 days) (4 to 6 months) Period 3 slow growth: 24 weeks to 52 weeks (169 to 365 days) (6 to12 months)

No matter what diet you choose you must feed the appropriate number of calories per day and monitor the weight and body condition of the puppy. Ideally, if you look at the puppy from above it should have a waist, the hipbones and ribs can be felt. The skin should be moveable over the hips and ribs with some fat. The ribs and hips should not be hidden or covered by a layer of fat. The growth of a puppy can be divided into three periods: Period 1 rapid growth: 8 weeks to 16 weeks (56 to112 days) (2 to 4 months)

The table (Table1) below reflects average daily caloric intake based on research studies done on the impact of nutrition on the growth of large breed puppies. In the Purina study, only the average caloric over the 3 periods was given and this was 1483 Kcal/day. The average caloric density of the large breed puppy research diets reviewed is 3700 Kcal/1000g. There is very little difference in the overall caloric intake among the research diets, the commercial diets and the Purina study. To determine the number of calories your puppy needs in a day based on its actual body weight you can calculate for: Period 1: the number of calories per day by: Actual BW in kg x 80 Kcal/kg BW Example: 13 kg pup at 4 months suggested caloric need is: 80X13=1,049 Kcals / day Period 2: the number of calories per day = Actual BW (kg) x 70 Kcal/kg BW Example: A 17 kg puppy’s suggested caloric need is 1190 Kcals per day Period 3: the number of calories per day = Actual BW (kg) x 60 kcal/kg BW Example: A 21 kg puppy’s suggested caloric intake is 1260 Kcal per day

*Note: These calculations represent the average for puppies of that weight and may not be accurate for each individual puppy. They represent a starting point as a result you must always monitor your puppy’s body condition if the puppy is becoming too thin feed more if too fat feed less. Make gradual rather than rapid changes in food intake. ** Note: The above calculations are less than the average suggested by the feeding recommendations on the commercial puppy diets ** *Note Commercial treats. Rawhide chews, pig’s ears all contain fat and calories that can cause your puppy to become fat. Unfortunately, if you cut back on the puppy’s diet you could be creating a nutrient deficiency. Always cut back on or change the treats first! Puppies do not recognise special treats as such; all they recognize is that through treats you are rewarding them with attention. So give them the attention without unhealthy treats. You can substitute walks, play time, and if you feel treats are necessary use pieces of raw apples, carrots, squash or the diet you are feeding the dog so long as it does not exceed what the puppy needs in a day.

FEEDING YOUR PUPPY

Body Condition Scoring: Body Condition Scoring is really very simple. It uses a scale of 1-9, with 1 being very underweight and 9 being very overweight. A body condition score of 4-5 is considered ideal. To work out your puppy’s individual body condition score, you need to do three checks: • • •

Rib Check: Run both your hands, palms facedown across your dog's ribcage on either side Profile Check: View your puppy standing from a side-on angle, this is best done if you are level with your pet Overhead Check: Look down at your standing dog from an overhead angle

In an ideal body condition, your dog's ribs can be felt without excess fat covering; the waist should be easily visible when viewed from above (giving an hour-glass shape) and the INSERT TEXT OR LOGO HERE. abdomen should be tucked up towards the pelvis, when viewed from one side. Keeping a close eye on body condition and working to maintain an 'ideal' score throughout all stages of your dog's life, can also decrease the risk of weight associated health problems such as arthritis, heart disease and even diabetes. Calculating how much to feed your puppy Once you determine how many calories your puppy needs then you must determine how much food your puppy requires. For this you will need to find out how many calories are in 1000g or a cup of the food you are feeding. This information may be on the label, on the company’s web site or phone the company.

Example: Your puppy (Eore) is 16 weeks old and weighs 16kg and is in Period 1: Eore’s caloric requirements are 16xx80=1280 Kcal/day The diet has 3700 Kcal/kg or 3.7Kcal/g; You must feed 1280/3.7=345g of the diet per day if there is 105 g of diet in one cup you must feed 378/105=2.3 8oz measuring cups per day. Best to divide into 2 meals or more per day. •

You do not need to weigh your puppy every day but once at the start of a period and once in the middle, to adjust the caloric intake.

Your puppy must have free access to fresh water during the day and night Protein: Unfortunately, for most dog foods the nutrient breakdown on bag label gives you only the guaranteed analysis that is either the guaranteed minimum or maximum but not the actual nutrient percentage. You may be able to get this information from the company’s web site or their hot line. Research indicates that a protein percentage in the diet on a “Dry Matter (DM) “basis (no moisture) of between 14 and 35 supports the growth of large breed puppies.

FEEDING YOUR PUPPY

In a Great Dane study protein percentage below or above these values are detrimental. In Purina’s study, the protein content was 26 %. In the study I did of commercial puppy diets, the average protein content of 50 puppy diets was 30%. There is no reason to feed a puppy more than 30% Protein on a dry matter basis (27% at 10% moisture or 6.6% at 78% Moisture) I recommend looking for a diet that has between 24 and 30% Crude Protein on the label of a dry diet and 5 to 6.6 on the label of a canned diet. The fat percentage in the research diets averaged around 10% DM. In the Purina study the fat percentage in the diet was 11%DM. The average for the 50 puppy diets was 15 %, 4 to 5% above requirements. This is related to the facts that fat is a cheap but concentrated source of calories and fat increases the palatability of the diet. Calcium: A puppy requires between 4 g and 8 g of calcium per day. Less than 4g may be considered low; less than 2 g deficient. Above 8 g may be too much. Thus a puppy diet with between 1 and 1.5% Ca (DM) is appropriate. In the Purina study, the Ca was 1.2% and the average for the 50 puppy diets was 1.3 %. The maximum Ca is 2%. These values are based on a diet that has no moisture. The amount of Calcium on the label for dry food should be no less than 0.9% and no more than 1.5%; for canned no less than0.22% and no more than 0.4%

Summary: The Ideal Large breed puppy diet should have a caloric density of approximately 3700 Kcal/1000g. This may be on the bag label, on the product’s website or obtained through the companies hot line. You will need this value to calculate how much food to feed per day. The Nutrient Analysis should indicate: (most puppy diets fall into this area as do almost all of the life stage diets. Special large breed puppy diets or veterinary therapeutic are not necessary. •

A caloric density between 3500 and 4000 Kcal per 1000g (kg). For diets over 4000Kcal/1000g the protein, calcium and phosphorous % must be higher because you will be feeding the puppy less of this diet. As these diets often contain a higher % of fat which if over fed can lead to obesity.

A Crude Protein of between 24% and 30% of DM {A kibble diet (22% to 33%) a canned diet (4.8% to 6%)}

*Grain free diets are an option but in my experience they are not any better than diets with grains. *Grain free diets contain carbohydrates from fruit and vegetables which when heat processed will likely have the same digest ability as that of the grains. *Research is very limited in this area; mostly these recommendations are based on opinion rather than facts.

When is it necessary to start on an adult food? By a year of age your puppy could go on an adult formula, but the majority of adult diets are similar in nutrient content to what is in a puppy diet. **When you bring your puppy in for a health check or a vaccination, bring in a zip lock bag with the amount of food you are feeding the puppy per day, plus the label information on the diet you are feeding (an empty bag will do) and any information on the treats you are feeding your puppy. Your veterinarian can make sure you are on the right track to having a healthy puppy.

Book Review

Cheryl Smith, who dedicates this book to her Keeshond, Sundance, has put together a wonderful guide for dog lovers who want a garden. But it’s also a terrific book for a gardening enthusiast who would like to share life with a dog. She takes a commonsense approach to combining the two successfully. “This doesn’t mean you can’t have the beautiful borders and winding paths you desire, just that you need to think about where your dog will be permitted unsupervised access, where you will be together, and if there’s anywhere the dog won’t be allowed at all.” And she stresses flexibility because of their individuality, “whether talking about the gardens or the dogs.” Ms. Smith does suggest the importance of researching your dog’s breed characteristics…for example, moles and Jack Russell Terriers will result in the dirt flying. However, giving equal weight to the other side, she suggests you honestly assess your garden style – collector of one-of-a-kind plantings, a formal garden or Japanese garden, rock, cottage/English country garden or wildflower meadow or naturalized woodlands before starting. In each of the nine chapters, the author offers practical ideas, plans and suggestions for planning, planting, growing and enjoying life with your dog in the garden of your dreams. Plus there is a Climate Zone guide and a reference section with other gardening, dog and training titles, along with gardening websites and dog websites. She includes an essential chapter on avoiding pests and poisoning your pets, including a listing of toxic and annoying (since some can cause problems without being poisonous) plants. And don’t skip the section on Good Garden Behavior with a training tips and ideas on channeling canine activities to appropriate garden etiquette. If you have questions, I’ll bet you’ll find the answer in this easy-to-read book. Well worth the read!

Kees To Agility by Sunny (as dictated to 2-legged secretary, Jocelyn Tipple)

Hello. My name is Sunny, Shoreline’s Hangin Tuff NA, OAJ. My great aunt, Martle, used to write this column but she went to some place they call the Rainbow Bridge in February. (I hope there are many stinky things for her to roll in there - she liked that.) Her human secretary, Jocelyn, tried to get my older brother Ray to take over writing but he said he wasn’t much in for words and preferred action because he thinks he’s pretty hot stuff in agility. I’m a two year old puppy but I spent a little time with Miss Martle sitting on the porch sniffing the breeze, watching the birds and she told me a few things. I’m still learning a lot about agility, I have a few titles and I think I could learn a lot by interviewing the big dogs. Since this is my maiden voyage into interviewing, I thought I would interview my mama, Tuffie. I know, because she is my dame, I think she is amazing but you be the judge of that. She has 5 MACHs, Grand Championship, and titles in tracking, obedience, rally, and is a therapy dog. She has been invited to 3 AKC Agility Nationals and 2 AKC Agility Invitationals. Tuffie told me it wasn’t easy to get her human, Tawn Sinclair, to stop long enough to take a memo for this article but she did finally. Tawn and Tuffie, known around here as team T ‘n T, not only have a busy schedule competing in agility, obedience, tracking, conformation but they teach obedience and rally at one of the oldest obedience clubs in Southern California. Tuffie and Tawn embody the word “teamwork”. Because Tawn takes Tuffie everywhere with her to so many activities, has her help teach obedience and rally classes by being “demo dog” as well as sharing time with their family, T ‘n T’s team bond is one we all dream of having. When they work together, it is hard to decipher where one stops and the other one begins as they perfectly complement one another’s moves. Their relationship underlines the working companion dog ingrained in every Kees; able to suss out the job, work independently and in concert with their human, adapt to changing environments, be a family dog, and know when it is time to relax. Miss Martle told me that she thought Tuffie was special back when she first saw her and that watching her run agility made Martle smile. Whenever Martle spent time with Tuffie at a trial or overnight, she would follow her, stand next to her and beam. Miss Martle would approve of this interview.

Sunny - How long ago did you start agility? Tuffie - I have been doing agility ever since I can remember. My human started me out playing with tunnels and wobble boards from the time I could walk. It was always a blast. Mom started doing agility with my big cousin JD in 1998. She ran him and my cousin Solo and got hooked. She says she got better with each of us, so we could be better too. Now she runs me; my little sister, Tasha; your sister, Kelsey; and my little cousin, Ruby.

Sunny - Do you belong to a club or take regular classes? Tuffie - We go to agility classes at our friend Barbara Lombard’s house. She was on the World Team with her Sheltie, Turbo, and is a really good trainer ... even if she mostly runs those yappy Shelties. We also belong to the West Los Angeles Obedience Training Club, where my human teaches many Obedience and Rally classes. I get to be a “demo dog” a lot. That means I get to show the newbie dogs how it’s done!

Sunny - How old were you when you started competing? Tuffie - I started competing the first weekend I was eligible which was when I was 12 months old. I got my NA and NAJ my first weekend because I was really good!

Sunny - What kind of successes have you had? Tuffie - I’m seven now and I have accomplished a lot in agility, obedience, rally, tracking, conformation and therapy dog work. I have my MACH5, 2 legs on my UD, my RAE, my Tracking Dog title and my Versatile Companion Dog title. Just to show that talent and beauty go together, my human took me back to the conformation ring to get my Grand Championship! My whole name looks like alphabet soup! I have been the #1 Kees in AKC agility for the past two years and have been invited to the AKC Invitational twice and to the AKC Nationals 3 times.

I’d probably have more accomplishments but I took time off twice to have you and your brothers and sisters and your older brother Ray. That maternity leave takes a lot out of a girl, so I hope you appreciate the sacrifice I made for you!

Sunny - What is your favorite venue? Tuffie - I like all the agility venues, but my human likes AKC the best. She says that in USDAA we have to jump too high and she doesn’t want us to wear out too young. We don’t have much NADAC around although JD used to do that venue before it kind of disappeared around here.

Sunny - How long did it take to train your human? Tuffie - I am STILL training my human! She is better than she used to be when she would get lost on the course or get in my way, but I still have to check in and ask her where we are going since she isn’t that good at cueing me where she wants me to go next!

Sunny - What is your favorite part of playing the agility game? Tuffie - I LOVE everything about agility! I like the running, jumping, and balancing. I like the excitement and the noise and how everyone cheers at the good stuff and groans when things don’t go so well.

Sunny - What is your favorite "unsanctioned" agility move? Tuffie - I would NEVER do anything “unsanctioned”! I leave that to your Aunt Tasha and Sister Kelsey. Tasha loves to say, “I’ll be back where you want me AFTER I check out this tunnel! It makes my human really grumpy and then Tasha doesn’t get the special treats. Tasha is pretty stupid that way, but my human says she will be great someday. Yeah, whatever.

Sunny - What is you favorite motivator; play, treats, love, glory, rolling in dead stuff...? Tuffie - I do love my special food treats, but I would do agility even if there wasn’t any food. I have so much fun and so does my human. When we finish running we are both doing the Happy Dance!

Sunny - Which one of your runs will go down in the annals of Keeshonden agility history (whether your human likes it or not)?

Tuffie - My most famous run got posted all over the Internet because It was my first MACH run and I was doing it while I was 5 weeks pregnant with you and your brothers and sisters! No one could believe that my human would be that nuts but I did two QQ’s that weekend and finished that first MACH. My human had thought we would never get that done, but since then adding up more MACHs has been a piece of cake! We are a TEAM!

Sunny - I hope to be like my mama, Tuffie, someday! We are extremely proud to announce that at almost 9 years of age, “Harvey” was taken out of retirement to gain the last points needed for the new title of “Supreme Champion”

Harvey was always a very “challenging” dog to show, not a single point came to his handler easily! Tragedy struck in 2008 when Cheri tore her Achilles tendon, Trevor took over showing Harvey and completed his Grand Championship title. Shortly after that, tragedy struck again and Harvey injured his shoulder which forced him into early retirement.

It was with immense pride, pleasure and a few tears, that Cheri & Harvey returned to the ring on August 20, 2012 to gain that final Supreme Champion title!

How to become a French champion? Four qualifiers can be attributed:

EXC. : Excellent (red card) The term is attributed to a dog which comes very close to the standard of the breed ... presented in excellent condition, the dog makes an harmonious and balanced set. It has the "class" and it has excellent posture. Its superior qualities dominate its little imperfections and it has the characteristics of its sex. TB: « Très bon » meaning Very good (blue card). The dog is perfectly typed, balanced in its proportions, and it’s in good physical condition. Some defects "venial" but not morphological, are tolerated. The qualifier can reward only a quality dog! B: « Bon » Good (green card) This designation is awarded to a dog with characteristics of its breed however showing defaults, only if they are not prohibitive! AB: « Assez Bon » meaning Pretty good (yellow card) The dog is "typed" but without possessing and, or, not in good physical condition. For Puppy class (dogs between 9 and 12 months), the judge can make an assessment - « Trèsprometteur » Very promising - « Prometteur » Promising - « Assezprometteur » Pretty promising Depending on the type of show, some certificates can be also attributed: CACS « Certificatd'Aptitude de Conformité au Standard » or Aptitude Certificate of Compliance with Standards The CACS goes to the best male and the best female after the first confrontation of the two "REVIEWS" Open Classes and Labour. RCACS : « Réserve du Certificatd'Aptitude de Conformité au Standard ». The RCACS goes to the dog/bitch classed second behind the holder of the CACS. CACIB : « Certificatd'Aptitude au Championnat international de Beauté ». The certificate is delivered after the first confrontation EXCELLENT in Champion Class with dogs that have obtained the CACS and RCACS. RCACIB : « Réserve du Certificatd'Aptitude au Championnat international de Beauté » The RCACIB goes to the dog/bitch classed second behind the holder of the CACIB. How to obtain the title of « Champion de France de Conformité au Standard ? It depends on the breed but, for keeshonden in France, you have to obtain:  The CACS of the « Championn at de France » (only one National exhibition each year) or the CACS of the National show of the breed (only one show organized by each kennel club each year, too)  The CACS in one of the « Special breed » show organized by the club (about ten each year)  The CACS in an international show where the CACIB is also attributed.  The 3 CACS have to be obtained with 3 different judges, including at least a French judge.  The TAN « Test d’Aptitudes Naturelles » or Test of natural aptitudes (no stressed and aggressive dog, walking in lead and without near the owner and somebody can examine the dog)  The exam of hip dysplasia with an official advice, necessarily A or B Then, you have 2 months to ask for the approval of the title of France Champion.
