DESIGNER STATEMENT Fashion and Style has made me what I am today. Great people from the creative industry such as Tim Walker, Annie Leibovitz, Stefan Sagmeister, Terry Richardson, Alexander Mcqueen, Martin Margiela, Mugler and so on has inspired me a lot since I am still a kid. Remember browsing through design books at the bookstores, doodling out designs that I have seen has brought me here today as a designer that is style oriented as well as fashion driven. I have a very random thinking process. Usually I will do some brainstorming sessions while having time with friends, asking about their opinion and ideas. Besides that, I will drop by bookstores to flip through books of different genre so that I can see things from a different angle. I spend most time on online researching, looking for works that have been done before by other people and take it as an advice. Even though working from idea to execution is my basic working style, sometimes I would like to do work the other way round, deciding the art style and direction and merged it together with my design concept. Graphics are more engaging to audiences as every design needs to be persuasive enough on its first impression. I will always bring along with me my tablet and sketchbook with me wherever I go. It is very important to me as I always write and sketch down ideas and details I see. Magazines are always my main source of inspiration. I am willing to spend my money on magazines that are filled with colourful pages of photo spreads and inspirations. My room is filled with stacks of magazines and every magazine is so precious that I will not even cut or tear it, not to say sending it to the recycle bin. To me, an issue of magazine is hardwork of a group of editors and designers pulling together what they can offer and presenting it to the public, providing all sorts of information in paper form. The part that amazes me the most is the fashion spreads in fashion magazines. Flipping through fashion editorial of every magazine issue is just like giving me surprises and the by looking at the way the whole team coordinates the latest trends and style with a very unique concept makes me excited of every magazine on newsstand.
Since then, I have decided that I want to be in the creative industry. It all started when I just graduated from high school, when studying design is an unachievable dream where your family background has totally no connections to it. Eventhough I have been taking art lessons since 4, and has joined so many competitions that I can’t even recall, enrolling into an art college is still one of my dreams. Thanks to my supportive parents, I had a chance to join one of the best colleges in the creative industry. I found my path when I was in photography class, where I was amazed by how a small camera device can seize the moment. My passion for fashion was also discovered when I get to know some friends who are already working in the industry. Without any formal education on fashion, I started taking random photos of friends when they are dressed up. Practicing photography was really my weekly activity as I always bring my camera with me wherever I go. In 2011, I started to know more friends who are in the fashion industry, knowing people and names that I always read on magazines, I have never thought that I will know them in real live. Starting to venture into fashion was really interesting and fun! People always ask me that why am I even in graphic design when I’m so into fashion. I am not only having my love for fashion but also the love for beautiful things and I believe that I can make use of my graphic design skills in the fashion industry when I graduate. Being a student, I am glad that I had a chance to work with industry professionals and learn from them. During semester breaks, I started to work closely with modeling agencies, fashion designers to work on test shoots where I get to learn and brush up my skills. It was the end of 2011 when I started to get noticed by some local magazines and designers that I was being hired to do shoots and campaigns for them. To be good in photography, I practice fashion styling by collaborating with other photographers in the industry. Fashion styling allows me to understand the latest trend and style and also learn about how different photo angles can change the look of the garment. Besides that, I also practice photo touchups, photo manipulation and editorial layouts. I apply my graphic design knowledge on these tasks so i can fully utilize of what i have learnt throughout these years as well as making myself a better photographer with graphic design skills. All these trainings has made me what I am today and I am sure that it will bring me further and prepare me for the real industry. I hope i can do well in the near future and move closer to my goal of becoming one of the good designer & photographer in the industry.
