GO WEST YOUNG MAN
Keith Piper Fourteen black and white photomontage and text panels. Hand developed gelatin silver print mounted on board. 558 mm x 355 mm each Panel May 1987 This series was originally commissioned by the Ikon Gallery, Birmingham as part of their ‘Community Touring Programme’ in 1987. These black and white photomontage panels were further developed as a series of laminated hand tinted A2 photocopies that toured to various community venues throughout Birmingham and the West Midlands in 1987-1988. Original gelatin silver print series was purchased by the Tate in 20081.
The narrative structure of ‘Go West Young Man’ was further developed into a computer animation produced by Piper as part of the ‘Animate’ series funded by the Arts Council of England and Channel 4 in 19962.
