A RTISTS W HO H AV E RECENTLY SETTLED IN AUSTR A LI A From Africa to the Far East, from the traditional to the contemporary, from the emerging to the established, Emerge Festival is a colourful celebration of Victoria’s many rich and undiscovered refugee and emerging cultures. An initiative of Multicultural Arts Victoria, the Emerge Festival promotes diversity, social inclusion, respect and the breaking down of racism. Throughout the gloomy months of June and July, Emerge Festival will present a colorful array of visual art, dance, forums, ancient crafts, exotic foods and ceremonies, climaxing in a huge street party in and around Fitzroy Town Hall. Emerge Festival commemorates the United Nations World Refugee Day and celebrates Refugee Week: Restoring Hope in Australia with a series of amazing performances all around Melbourne from May 18th – July 31st 2013, showcasing the contribution emerging and refugee communities are making to contemporary arts and culture.

restaurant will host a cultural stage featuring traditional artists from Sudan & Ethiopia. Local traders will open their doors to create a vibrant cultural marketplace packed with tasty authentic foods, exotic fashions, crafts and homewares, cooking classes & Ethiopian coffee ceremonies. Refugee speakers and others will talk about the current issues and how the government needs to change policies to protect the rights of people seeking asylum. The current policies are not working, they violate human rights, and they are expensive. The Refugee Advocacy Network is calling for an end to off-shore detention and for community options to support people while their claims for refugee status are being determined. This unique solo exhibition features paintings and sculptures created in African and Australian woods including masks, land animals, birds, jewellery and decorative household objects. Nickel Mundabi Ngadwa was born in the Democratic Republic of Congo. He lives with his wife and three children in Shepparton where he is an active member of the Congolese and artistic community. Now in its fourth year, the 2013 Heartlands Exhibition features paintings, drawings, mixed media and photographic works by refugee artists entered in the Heartlands Refugee Art Prize. With a total prize pool of over $20,000, winning artists will have a unique opportunity to further their artistic output and career aspirations, as either emerging or established artists. VRRR recipients represent many different cultures and age groups, and work in a variety of fields. Many dedicate time to voluntary work within their own local community or the
community at large. A lot have taken on leadership and mentoring roles, and provide support to others who are marginalised or disadvantaged. All hold a common commitment to bettering their own lives and the lives of others, often despite having suffered extreme hardship and trauma. RIGHTEOUS: RIGHTS AT THE ROUND TABLE
Righteous: Rights at the Round Table is a youth human rights program produced by Multicultural Arts Victoria. This year the program will include four forums for youth from Shepparton, Swan Hill, Brimbank and Dandenong to creatively explore contemporary human rights issues through discussion, storytelling, role play and spoken word. The forums will be facilitated by Hip Hop and Spoken Word artists L-FRESH the LION and Elf Tranzporter and will be filmed, edited and displayed online for our youth to continue the discussion.
