DEAKIN EDGE  | UBUNTU UBUNTU is a philosophy based on inter-connectedness, or humanity towards others. The word has its origins in the languages of Southern Africa, but is used in cultures across Africa to refer to humanity, compassion, generosity of spirit, and respect towards others. It is based around the concept of “I am, because you are.” The Ubuntu Stage aims to harness this sentiment, and delivers an opportunity for young people from Victoria’s culturally and linguistically diverse communities to come together to express themselves creatively.

MULTIFAITH MULTICULTURAL YOUTH NETWORK (MMYN) The Multifaith Multicultural Youth Network (MMYN) was established in September 2007 to provide advice to the Victorian Government, on issues and initiatives that affect young Victorians from culturally, religiously and linguistically diverse backgrounds. The MMYN is comprised of young people from a range of faiths, cultures, ages, geographical locations, and life experiences. The MMYN meets four to six times a year, and as well as highlighting key issues facing young Victorians, members have the opportunity to develop youth-led projects which respond to some of these issues. Members of the MMYN have played a pivotal role in the establishment and coordination of the Ubuntu stage.

BODHI TREE – FIELD OF ENLIGHTENMENT The Bodhi tree is sacred to all Buddhists. The Buddha sat under its branches in meditation and achieved enlightenment. The Bodhi leaf is a symbol of peace and a reminder of the collective impact we can share by supporting one another. Share your own thoughts of peace, or a wish for yourself or another, by adding a leaf with your message to the growing field. The Bodhi Tree - Field of Enlightenment will be on display on the Federation Square steps. The Bodhi Tree - Field of Enlightenment is brought to you by the Buddha’s Light International Association of Victoria in conjunction with Nick Rennie of Happy Finish Designs.

RANGOLI ART COMPETITION Rangoli is a traditional Indian form of folk art, often created to celebrate festive occasions. Intricate patterns are drawn on the floor with chalk or flour and filled in with coloured rice, dried pulses, or flowers. Five community groups have been invited to participate in a rangoli competition at Viva Victoria. Watch the creation of the rangoli masterpieces in the St Paul’s Court area.

KIDS’ ACTIVITIES A dedicated space for kids, with free face-painting and interactive activities. Children can make jewellery and flags from recycled materials; create their own piñatas; and create a rangoli design. They will also be entertained with African musical workshops, and Indigenous story-telling. The kids’ activities area is located in the main plaza.

Young people were asked to visually interpret themes of cultural diversity and harmony. The results provide a fascinating and beautiful insight into our multicultural society as seen through the eyes of youth. Visit the Yarra Gallery for Art of the Urban Pharaoh - Masterpieces Lost. Egyptian graffiti art that sprang up in post-revolutionary Egypt was censored and painted over. What the government didn’t want you to see has been captured by photographer and graphic designer, Ossama Boshra.
