The Blue jar

In her search she told the people, with whom she dealt, that she was looking for a particular blue color, and would pay any price for it. But although she bought many hundred blue jars and bowls, she would always after a time put them aside and say: “Alas, alas, it is not the right blue.

“It is all nonsense when learned people tell you that the seas have got a bottom to them. On the contrary, the water, which is the noblest of the elements, does, of course, go all through the earth.

“And there, on the other hemisphere, a ship sails, with which I have got to keep pace. We two are like the reflection of one another, in the deep sea, and the ship of which I speak is always exactly beneath my own ship, upon the opposite side of the globe.

“In the end my ship will go down, to the center of the globe, and at the very same hour the other ship will sink as well - for people call it sinking, although I can assure you that there is no up and down in the sea—and there, in the midst of the world, we two shall meet.”

“Is it not a sweet thing to think that, if only you have patience, all that has ever been, will come back to you?

About the Designer Kelcie McCurdy was raised in Northwest Oregon where she spent her childhood riding horses and exploring the woods behind her house. In 2011 she moved to Chicago to pursue a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Fashion Design at Columbia College. She was drawn to fashion design because it allows individuals to alter the way others perceive them and the way they perceive themselves. Her goal as a fashion designer is to create clothing that combines fantasy with practicality. The fabrications and silhouettes she employs in her designs are dreamy and surreal while maintaining wearability. She often creates her own textiles by crocheting, dyeing, and embroidering fabric. For four years, she has worked alongside the owner of Chicago beauty store, Mojo Spa, as the assistant accessories designer. In April 2015 she was selected as a finalist in the Chicago Fashion Foundation’s Future of Chicago Design Competition, and had the opportunity to showcase one of her designs in a runway show at the Chicago Cultural Center. She is also an experienced journalist and has been published in Chicago Talks, Second City Style, and Echo Magazine.

About the Collection Kelcie McCurdy’s S/S 16 collection was inspired by the Danish fairytale, The Blue Jar, by Karen Blixen. In this story, a wealthy young English woman spends her life sailing around the world, searching for the perfect shade of rare blue china. The china represents her soul mate, a poor sailor who her father won’t allow her to marry. The collection captures her desperation as she sails from one country to the next searching for the one she loves. She slowly loses her former identity as she becomes one with the sea.
