A LETTER FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Friends of Kellenberg Memorial, As we enter into Kellenberg Memorial High School’s thirty-third year, I am thankful to see how the school has flourished over the past three decades. It is clear by reading the features in this magazine that, thanks in great part to the dedication and talent of our gifted faculty, staff, and administration, the members of our student body are thriving academically, spiritually, and socially. The goal of the Marianists upon founding Kellenberg Memorial High School in 1987 -- to provide an unparalleled Catholic education of the hearts and minds of the youth of Long Island -- remains unchanged to this day. We are incredibly proud of the over 13,000 Firebird alumni who are using their faith and intellect to set the world on fire. Now, as we look to the future, we remain committed to ensuring that a Catholic education in the Marianist tradition is available to countless generations of Future Firebirds. French writer Antoine de Saint-Exupéry once wisely said, “A goal without a plan is just a wish.” We are keenly aware that in order to ensure success in the future, we must constantly be planning in the present. To that end, we have established an Advisory Board comprised of talented alumni, KAPA members, and friends of Kellenberg

Memorial (see page 19). Strategic planning has allowed us to develop a strong “Vision for the Future,” which we have already begun implementing. The purchase of Stella Maris in Islip, NY earlier this year has greatly enhanced the day retreat experience for our current students. We are keenly aware that in order to ensure success in the future, we must constantly be planning in the present. a fresh, modern space for our student athletes to prepare for practices and competitions. Our track was completely resurfaced using a new rubberized polyurethane material, providing an enhanced experience for athletes, physical education classes, youth sports participants, and community events. The aging bleachers overlooking St. Matthew field have been removed
and will be completely renovated and expanded this summer. This summer will also bring the complete renovation of the first of six science labs, transforming each of them over time into state-of-the-art spaces for students to learn using hands-on scientific research. Curriculum enhancements are also being introduced, including newly added courses in math, science, and engineering, as well as expanded opportunities for students to earn college credit with local colleges and universities. The story of our school is one that is still being written, and the next chapter is being planned carefully. Kellenberg Memorial’s “Vision for the Future” represents the upcoming renaissance of our campus and programs, as well as the greater future of our school. I thank each and every member of the Firebird Family who has been a part of the writing of the story of our school, and who I know will continue to contribute to the future chapters as they unfold for Kellenberg Memorial. Sincerely,
Brother Kenneth M. Hoagland, S.M. Principal

32ND ANNUAL COMMUNION BREAKFASTS On April 7th and April 14th, Kellenberg Memorial’s sixth through ninth grades and tenth through twelfth grades, respectively, gathered to celebrate the school’s 32nd Annual Communion Breakfasts. On April 7th, families attended Mass and then enjoyed breakfast and reflections from Mrs. Patti Ann McDonald and Sgt. Conor McDonald, an alumnus of the Latin School. They spoke about the life and legacy of their husband and father, Detective Steven McDonald. The speaker at the Palm Sunday Communion Breakfast on April 14th was Jennifer Hubbard. Jennifer is a monthly contributor to Magnificat, recipient of two Catholic Press Awards, and an inspiring speaker. Her youngest child, Catherine Violet, was a victim of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting. Jennifer and her husband established the Catherine Violet Hubbard Animal Sanctuary® in memory of their daughter that serves as a safe haven for animals. Having spoken to audiences across the country, Jennifer shares her personal journey of recovery in the wake of her darkest hours. Above: Latin School Chaplain Father Daniel Griffin, S.M. ’02, Assistant Principal for the Latin School Miss Maria Korzekwinski, and Sgt. SPREADING OUR WINGS THE VISION FOR THE FUTURE OF KELLENBERG MEMORIAL

ellenberg Memorial is a thriving Catholic school in the Marianist tradition which instills core values of Civility, Order, and Respect in its students. Over the past 30+ years, Kellenberg Memorial has sent forth over 13,000 Firebirds, transforming the world through hearts and minds nurtured through their Kellenberg experience. Kellenberg graduates go on to top tier colleges and universities and become global leaders in finance, law, medicine, technology, education, civil service, and engineering. Many Firebird alumni choose lives of service to others by entering into religious life or becoming members of the armed forces, police departments, and fire departments. Increased enrollment over the years is clear evidence that the Marianist approach to education has caught fire. Since its opening, Kellenberg Memorial has been in a constant state of forward progress. Some of the more significant changes over the past three decades have included:

• The addition of peaceful gardens and ponds in the courtyards and beautiful woodwork to transform brick and mortar into an atmosphere that educates • Launching the Brother Joseph C. Fox Latin School for sixth, seventh, and eighth graders • The introduction of 1:1 technology where all students and teachers utilize iPads • The development of a technology-enabled curriculum • The expansion of STEM-related electives and cocurricular activities
With valued input from the members of the Advisory Board, Kellenberg Memorial continues to evolve while remaining committed to offering an unparalleled Catholic education of the heart and mind, which includes a rigorous college preparatory curriculum offered alongside a vibrant apostolic program, a wide range of student clubs and activities, and a strong athletics program.
Saint Pope John Paul II once wisely stated, “The future starts today, not tomorrow.” In order to ensure that countless generations of Firebirds receive an equally innovative Catholic, liberal arts education rooted in the Marianist tradition in the future, the administration of Kellenberg Memorial is taking bold steps today. A dedicated, dynamic Advisory Board has been established in order to guide and assist the administration as it strategically plans the steps to be taken to shape the vision for the future of the school.

CURRICULUM ENHANCEMENTS
• The school’s six existing science labs will be renovated in order to create dedicated, state-of-the-art spaces for students to learn by doing scientific research in a handson, collaborative, and integrated environment rooted in inquiry and discovery. • Six additional classrooms will be constructed, enabling the renovated science labs to be utilized solely for their designated purpose of scientific instruction. • The liberal arts curriculum will expand to include newly added courses in math, science, and engineering, as well as provide additional opportunities for students to earn college credit with local colleges and universities. • Investment in faculty will include dedicated lab faculty, enhanced professional development, and additional resources in college placement. 16
HEART & MIND
“With new and updated facilities, Kellenberg’s capabilities to better prepare students for science careers will greatly increase. A key element of science is research, and I believe that with renovated labs, students will be better equipped with experience to participate in science studies and careers. Additionally, new labs will undoubtedly benefit the school’s Science Olympiad team, which relies on practicing for competitions in a lab setting. The labs will foster learning, as well as a greater preparation for college and science careers.”

STUDENT ACTIVITIES
• A newly constructed, multi-purpose building will be added to the west side of the school building. It will extend onto a currently under-utilized practice area on Saint John Field. • The building will house two basketball courts, practice spaces for the Dance Team, Cheerleading, and Blue and Gold, as well as a weight-training area, small bowling alley, two-story rock-climbing wall, and golf simulator. • A music center will be constructed on the lower level, giving the band and orchestra rehearsal space with proper soundproofing and acoustic treatment. • A new art studio facility will be created above the newly renovated girls locker room. • The new multi-purpose building will ease the overburdened main school building and provide appropriate homes for many student activities, including homeroom competition days and various apostolic events.

“I think having earlier practices will definitely lead to improved athletic and academic experiences for student athletes. Having practices so late is difficult on many levels. You have to carpool because you miss your late bus, you aren’t home for dinner with your family, and carving out time for homework is hard. Having early practice times available due to more gym space would be a great benefit for many student athletes!”

APOSTOLIC FACILITIES “For me, the retreat house has allowed for a beautiful visual of God’s greatness. During the school year, it’s easy to get caught up in the madness of all our work and activities. Going to Stella Maris has allowed us to focus in on what’s truly important, our faith. Although the retreats in Emmanuel have demonstrated this, leaving the school campus includes leaving the stress behind, which is especially important for the still newly adjusting freshmen. My favorite asset to the retreat house is the large room for group discussion. You have an amazing view of God’s creation which truly places us in a spiritual and meditative mindset. I believe this room helps the freshmen reflect on themselves and has allowed for very productive discussion!”

• The addition of a retreat house, Stella Maris, in Islip, New York. • Once renovated (including converting an existing stable into a new chapel), Stella Maris will provide additional space for all of our retreat programs and give students additional opportunities to focus on faith and discernment. • The property provides direct access to Champlin Creek. • Following the renovation of the existing boat slip and T-dock, the newly established Firebird Crew Club will use Stella Maris for practices.

Thanks to the support of current students, parents, alumni, faculty members, and friends, Kellenberg Memorial's 4th Annual Day of Giving was a huge success! We are incredibly pleased to report that $147,776 was contributed by 1,270 donors. This by far surpassed the overall goals of $87,000 and 1,000 donors for the day. Firebird alumni showed strong support for the Day of Giving, with the class of 2019 having the highest class participation, followed by the class of 2018 in second, the class of 2017 in third, and the class of 2003 in fourth. Thanks to the impressive capabilities of the members of ETV, Firebirds near and far were able to tune in and catch live streaming coverage of the day’s events. The talents of the Day of Giving’s veteran on-air host, Jordan Bernhardi ’17, were complemented perfectly by the addition of a new co-host, Kate Byrnes ’18. A FEW MINUTES WITH MR. JAMES KRUG
Mr. Krug teaching his class in 1996.
When and how did you end up teaching at Kellenberg? Brother Kenneth called me when a faculty member had a health scare and he needed someone to cover Church History classes for about a month. I was home on a break from my studies in Rome, and I was thinking of going back. Classes in Rome don’t start until October, so I figured it made sense to fill in at Kellenberg for September. But while I was filling in, another teacher became seriously ill, and they needed someone to teach English for the rest of the year. At the time I was trying to figure out what God’s plan was, and I figured, “Well, I guess God wants me here for a little while.” I ended up staying and loving it, so a “little while” became 25 years. What do you remember about the early years at Kellenberg? I graduated from Chaminade in 1987 and then went on to St. John’s University, where I studied Philosophy and History. At the time I thought I would either enter the priesthood or go onto teach at the college level. I had started a semester late because I was actually considering going to Catholic University. So I graduated in January 1992 and had the spring to think of what my next move would be. I ended up going on a trip to Europe, and I met someone who offered me a place to stay and a scholarship if I wanted to get my graduate degree in Theology in Rome. Things fell into place, and it seemed like it was part of God’s plan, so I went. I worked on my graduate degree in Theology at the Pontifical University of the Holy Cross. My classes were all in Italian, so I had to learn quickly by taking an immersion course. I was prepared to keep going to complete my degree, but I also realized I needed to make some decisions about what would be next in my life. I was considering joining a religious community in France, so I lived in Provence after connecting with the community through 26

a French Benedictine priest I met in Rome. I needed to learn French if I wanted to join the community, and I ended up living with the priest’s parents near the community and studying French. I loved it there, but some family issues came up, so I returned after almost a year in France. I got the phone call from Brother Kenneth when I was home for the summer. Even for the first few years teaching here, I was still thinking about going back to Rome and continuing my studies. But when I started teaching Church History and became a guidance counselor, everything kind of clicked. Even though I hadn’t really considered teaching at the high school level, I realized that I loved what I was doing. I finished my graduate degree at St. Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers, NY. What have you taught and moderated during your time here? I have taught Church History, English, Senior Religion, and Scripture. Currently, I teach all Church History. I was Scoutmaster of our Boy Scout troop for about 20 years up until about three years ago. I am also the founder and moderator of the Catholic League here. It’s grown a lot over the years and is now called the Aquinas League. For many years we traveled to Rome for Easter. I believe those trips had a tremendous effect on the students who went. What has been the best part about teaching at Kellenberg? I really just appreciate being a part of the students’ lives. Hopefully, I’m passing on some of the faith to them. My faith has been such a great help in my own life, so to be able to pass that on is an honor and a privilege. What is so unique about an education that impacts both the heart and the mind? One thing I’ve found working here over the years is I think the kids know that we care about them. Hopefully they’ve felt that I care.
That’s always been a big thing - it’s not just that we come in and do our job and that’s it. We care about them, and it’s not just about filling their minds with a bunch of facts, but really to help them become the people that God is calling them to be - people that go out into the world then and make it a better place, a more caring place, a more loving place. What do you hope to instill in your students? I hope to instill in them a love for their faith. It seems like there are fewer and fewer people that make that an important part of their lives. Through their faith, I hope they become instruments of God in the world. Do you have any advice for students or alumni who are facing obstacles in their lives? I would definitely say that if they’re not connected with their faith that they should try to reconnect with God. Also, try to talk to somebody. Never keep it inside. You have to share it with someone. If it’s an alum, come back here to Kellenberg to talk. We still care. We don’t stop caring about you when you leave. This place really is truly a home to so many people. What does the phrase, “Kellenberg Family,” mean to you? The whole idea of the Brothers’ community is that they are a family. What’s awesome is that the life of being a Marianist family upstairs trickles down to everyone else here. So we have a strong model of what a family should be. We then take that and bring it into the classroom and every interaction with the students, and even into our own lives. I know as a dad and a husband, the Marianists have taught me so much about what family means. I’m hoping that I’ve been able to bring that into my own family. You’re never alone here at Kellenberg, and that’s what family is really about.

How and when did you meet? Ironically enough, we didn’t meet until our time at Kellenberg was coming to an end. We no doubt passed each other in the halls countless times over four years (we would later learn our senior lockers were positioned directly across from one another), but it wasn’t until a mutual friend and fellow Firebird invited a small group to a birthday celebration on the North Fork that we actually had our first real conversation. We clicked instantly, but high school was winding down and college would be taking us our separate ways. Despite being in different states, we never lost touch and reconnected in the summer of 2010.
Why are you looking forward to someday sending your children to Kellenberg Memorial? To this day we both get such a kick out of comparing our unique high school experiences. We left Kellenberg with totally different memories, but we both look back saying it was among the best four years of our lives. Like us, we want our children to want to stay after school. We want them to enjoy their classes, find lifelong friends, and feel like they are part of a family just as we did. We are confident that no matter what our children get involved with, they too will achieve success and happiness at Kellenberg.
When and where were you married? After a year and a half of planning, we were married on December 10, 2016 at St. Aidan’s Church in Williston Park. We were so blessed to have eight Kellenberg alumni standing by our side as prominent members of our bridal party. Neither of us had ever thought of having a December wedding, but looking back we wouldn’t change a thing... except for maybe adding a few degrees to the day! It was all smiles through the cold as we traveled to Red Hook for photos on the Brooklyn Bridge and for our unforgettable Liberty Warehouse reception.
What is one of the best lessons you each learned during your time at Kellenberg? “It is all what you make of it.” Like in life, the opportunities at Kellenberg were endless, but it was up to us to grab onto them. We loved our time there because we chose to partake in what the school had to offer and we chose to explore outside our comfort zones. If you were not involved at Kellenberg, it was only because you chose not to be. If you wanted the "full KMHS experience" you had to invest beyond the academic day. The same theory applies to our life now. You have to choose to find
happiness outside of your 9 to 5 job and you have to choose to be an active participant in the world around you. It may be extra work, but the fulfillment is well worth it. There are many Firebird alumni who have entered into the covenant of marriage together. What about your time at Kellenberg helped prepare you to make and keep the promise of being "true to your spouse in good times and in bad, in sickness and in health?" Without knowing it, our families gave our marriage the upper hand just by sending us to Kellenberg. We both have incredible parents who sought a high school that would further the faith and morals they worked hard to instill in us since birth. A Catholic education was so important to them and it would truly help define us. Thousands of students walk through the doors at 1400 Glenn Curtiss Boulevard every year. We come from all different walks of life, but at the core there is something fundamentally the same about all of us. Those shared values and priorities have helped lay the foundation for our marriage, and although still early, already shaped the parents we hope to be to our son.
