DEAR KELLENBERG MEMORIAL FAMILY,
The focus of this issue of Heart & Mind is Marianist LIFE! Generally speaking, we can identify Marianist Life as a manner of living influenced by Marianist Educational Philosophy. More specifically it is a leadership program in which our students are trained to assist us in creating a Marianist culture in our school. For the past two summers, our students have participated in the Marianist LIFE Training Program in Texas. Our Marianist LIFE students introduce student body Masses, speak on retreats, and set the Marianist tone for new students during orientation programs. Please enjoy the article on page 10 to better appreciate the work and influence this program has on Marianist Life within our school.
In this letter, I would like to share with you a broader context of what Marianist Life means for the Kellenberg Memorial Family. Our Founder, Blessed William Joseph Chaminade, encourages us to nurture faith in Jesus Christ from “the cradle to the grave.” This was Mary’s vocation, to nurture Jesus from His beginning in the manger to His death on the Cross. As Marianists, called to continue Mary’s vocation in the world, we walk with our Kellenberg Memorial families literally from cradle to the grave. Occasionally I will ask Father Thomas on one of his busy weekends, “Are you hatching, matching, or dispatching today?” It is not unusual for our priests in the Kellenberg Memorial Community
HEART & MIND 2
“By educating the mind and the heart, the school can form people who in turn can work at changing the very structures of their society to ensure a community of justice and reconciliation.”
— Blessed William Joseph Chaminade
to be baptizing a child or officiating at the wedding or a funeral of a person connected to Kellenberg Memorial. For us, it is a privilege to be able to be connected to Kellenberg Memorial families during significant points in their lives. Our founder’s unique charism emphasizes family spirit, urging us to create an inclusive community that nurtures faith and love. The Kellenberg Memorial Family continues to grow through our commitment to accompany our students and their families in good times and in bad.
In my role as Principal, I attend many wakes and funerals of Kellenberg Memorial parents, friends, and graduates. Marianist Life is never clearer to me than when I see the compassion and support that our faculty, students, and alumni provide for each other during a time of mourning. This past summer saw the passing of four graduates from the classes of 1993, 1999, 2009, and 2022. What overwhelmed me the most surrounding these wakes and funerals was the love and support of fellow alumni who remained dear to the deceased over time.
Again, we see a similar type of support given to fellow classmates when a
parent passes away. The response of classmates and team members gathered around a fellow student whose parent or grandparent passed away is truly consoling and heartwarming. This is what our founder, Blessed William Joseph Chaminade, meant when he said that our missionary work extends from the “cradle to the grave.” Marianist Life is not just a time that spans one’s enrollment in school. Marianist Life is truly a way of life that extends beyond a high school education and shapes the core of each individual.
We have been witnessing over the past few years the second generation of Firebirds passing through our doors. What a testimony to the positive influence Kellenberg Memorial has had on our graduates when they choose to send their children to their alma mater.
Not only have we seen alumni return to Kellenberg Memorial when enrolling their children, but we also see many returning alumni join our faculty and staff. Kellenberg Memorial alumni teaching second-generation Firebirds guarantees a consistent Marianist Philosophy that permeates the entire school.
In December, we had a visit from the General Administration of the Society of Mary. Our Superior General and his assistants visit once every five years. The purpose of the visit is to support, encourage, and review our Marianist Life in community and in school. The report from the General Administration could not have been more positive and energizing for us. You are invited to read a report summary written by Bro. Timothy Driscoll, S.M., Provincial of the Province of Meribah, by visiting tinyurl. com/3m4333yu at your convenience.
In closing, I would like to extend my gratitude and blessings to all who have and continue to fortify the mission of educating the hearts and minds of the students entrusted to our care. Marianist Life is stronger than ever thanks to all of you.
To Jesus through Mary,
Brother Kenneth M. Hoagland, S.M. Principal

TRIUMPH OF THE CROSS
On September 14th, the Firebird Family gathered outside for Kellenberg Memorial’s 30th anniversary of the celebration of the Triumph of the Cross. Fr. Daniel Griffin, S.M. ’02 blessed crosses that were distributed to the student body and the Gregorian Consortium provided a beautiful backdrop of prayerful music. Amaya Cigliano ’25 told The Phoenix newspaper, “I think the Triumph of the Cross is such an integral part of the spiritual life at Kellenberg. It’s the perfect way to start out the school year.”
PRAISE & WORSHIP
During the fall and winter, many liturgical celebrations took place on campus, including Masses for the Marianist Martyrs, Thanksgiving, All Saints Day, Feast of the Immaculate Conception, and Founders Day. Additionally, students took part in a rosary prayer service, an Advent prayer service, a memorial prayer service for Pope Benedict XVI, an Evening of Recollection, as well as midday prayer before each lunch period.

A FEW MINUTES WITH MRS. LIDIA (ARIAS) MARTEN
When and how did you end up teaching at Kellenberg Memorial?
I graduated from Molloy College in May 1996 and I sent my application to all the private, Catholic schools. I knew I definitely wanted to teach in a Catholic school to be part of a faith-based environment. Kellenberg was the first to call me for an interview and I got the job. So I’ve been here for 26 years now, and I love it here just as much as the day I started. I truly feel that I was meant to be here.
What have you taught and/or moderated/coached during your time here so far?
I have served as an assistant moderator for the Junior Art Guild, and led Sodality for many years. I was a guidance counselor at one point and I also do computer lab supervision once a week. I was the assistant moderator of the Spanish Club and then after Mrs. Albano retired I became the moderator. I do SMART, the after-school program at St. Martin’s. I am one of the moderators for the Culinary Club and chairperson of the Spanish section of World Languages. As far as teaching, I have taught every level of Spanish at some point during my time here. Wherever they need me, I go. I love getting to know a different side of the students in after-school activities. Sometimes I will have a student who is so quiet in class and then they really open up at the Culinary Club and I just love that.
What is your favorite thing about teaching at Kellenberg Memorial?
One thing I love is the structure. Everything here - in the classroom and out - is so well organized. I think that makes my job easier, and I also see how well the kids respond to the routine here. I also love being able to incorporate prayer into the school day. It allows me to relate to the kids on a different level. For example, I teach Spanish 4 and 5 and it’s advanced literature and reading. We always
find a way to connect what we are reading with our faith. Recently, we were reading a classic piece of literature criticizing Spanish society in the Middle Ages. One of the characters was questioning how to go on living and I asked my students, “What would you tell her?” The kids come up with beautiful religious answers saying, “God will open doors for you,” and “God will watch over you.” Especially during their senior year, you can tell how much they have grown in their faith lives during their time here.
What is so unique about an education that impacts both the heart and mind?
I asked my students to write a paragraph about what they want to do with their futures and one of my students said she wanted to be a Spanish teacher like me. She is now a wonderful ESL teacher who is making a big difference in people’s lives. She came back and showed me that paragraph that she had saved, and I cried because it was so special. To me, that is what makes an education of the heart and mind special. Also, I find that teaching a second language to students is very rewarding. When I came to the United States from Paraguay over 30 years ago, I didn’t speak any English. So I went to Molloy for an ESL
program and I had an opportunity to enroll as an undergraduate student. I used to record the classes because I didn’t understand what was going on. By my second year, I knew I wanted to be a teacher. So I was learning English at the same time that I was earning my teaching degree. It was very difficult, but it was so worth it. On the first day of classes I always tell my students that I want them to know that I truly have empathy for them as they learn a second language. I also want them to see that speaking more than one language is so rewarding.
What do you hope to instill in your students?
I want them to learn Spanish, but first I want them to know how important holding onto their faith is. I hope my students leave my classroom and know that if they see things in this world that they do not agree with or think are wrong, they have the power to work to change those things. I remind them to be wise and make their own judgments and to always listen to both sides of an issue. I hope that when they leave here, they always think of others first and treat people the way they want to be treated. I encourage them to hold on hard to their faith, because they will be challenged in college and throughout their lives.
What does the phrase “Firebird Family” mean to you?
When I was brand new here, people went out of their way to welcome me, learn my name, and make me comfortable. My first year, I was Jim Krug’s assistant for Triple A and he was so incredibly nice to me and taught me so much. Mrs. Rosemarie Albano was my mentor, and I owe it to her that I have become the teacher that I am today. It is unique to find a work environment as nurturing as it is here. I also find that wherever I go, I find someone who has a connection to Kellenberg. The community and family feeling here is so strong and extends well past the campus boundaries.
KELLENBERG.ORG HEART & MIND 9 FACULTY INTERVIEW
MARIANIST LIFE Empowering Servant Leaders
“Authentic, vibrant, and affirming.”
Those are the three words that Ms. Erica Duarte, coordinator of Marianist LIFE (Living In Faith Experience), uses to describe the national faith-formation program rooted in Catholic and Marianist tradition.
This past July, 12 rising seniors attended the Marianist LIFE South program at the Tecaboca Retreat Center in the hill country outside of San Antonio, TX. This was Kellenberg Memorial’s first group of students to take part in LIFE in person, as last summer’s program was held virtually. Kellenberg Memorial Chaplain Father Daniel Griffin, S.M. ’02 has helped coordinate the LIFE program since 2019 and was thrilled to have Firebirds take part in the fiveday, intensive program that is designed to train students to bring the Marianist charism back to their school communities. In addition to helping coordinate the LIFE program since 2019, Fr. Dan also serves as a Chaplain for LIFE South, which includes schools and parishes from California, Texas, Florida, and New York.
“The students gave up part of their summer to learn how to become servant leaders and how to help infuse the Marianist charism and spirit into the faith lives of their fellow classmates,” says Fr. Dan. “Of course, students constantly see the Brothers and teachers at Kellenberg living out the Marianist mission, but having their peers lead the school community in faith experiences presents a unique approach that has a great impact.”
While in Texas, students learned about the Pillars of Marianist LIFE (Faith, Mary, Mission, Inclusivity, and Community) and the basic tenets of Catholic Social Teaching through a combination of breakout sessions, peer mentorship, quiet reflection, team-building exercises, and prayer. They also strategized ways to bring what they learned back to campus with them.
Fr. Dan explains, “Kellenberg has always had a wonderful apostolic program. The ARK (Apostolic Response at Kellenberg) has been here for over 20 years, and even before that, there was always a very strong focus on campus ministry work. So we figured the best

MARIANIST LIFE
Empowering Servant Leaders
way to spread the Marianist LIFE message was to build onto apostolic activities already in existence.”
The Marianist LIFE Leaders engage their classmates in a variety of ways, including the creation of WITNESS Wednesday. LIFE Leader Zachary Vogt ’23 says, “One of the biggest takeaways from the LIFE program is that anyone can be a part of the Marianist faith community - not just those who have taken vows. We try to communicate that idea to our classmates by giving WITNESS talks. We’ve also been appearing on morning announcements on Wednesdays before monthly Mass to communicate a theme on which the community can focus and reflect. WITNESS Wednesday is a good reminder for everyone to be present and prepared to receive the Gospel message and apply it to their own lives.”
Marianist LIFE Leaders also provide a brief reflection before monthly school Masses, as well as promote and introduce XLT, Kellenberg’s monthly Eucharistic Adoration. They meet regularly to brainstorm new ideas for bringing the mission of Christ and Mary, the Blessed Mother, to the school community.
These student-led faith experiences are precisely what the Marianist LIFE Program aims to develop and help flourish. Ms. Duarte says, “Marianist LIFE is unique because it weaves faith formation, community building, mission, and leadership into one dynamic program that is driven and led by students. Empowering students to form and nurture communities of faith within their schools and parishes allows them to take an active part in Mary’s mission of bringing Christ into the world.”
Another unique aspect of the faith-formation program is that it connects students in Marianist schools from all over the country. Fr. Dan says, “It was really rewarding to watch the kids interact with students
(Continued)
from other Marianist schools. It was amazing when they realized they aren’t the only ones who stop and pray the Three O’Clock Prayer. Marianist LIFE shows our students that they are part of this special worldwide family of Marianists.”
Brother Patrick Cahill, S.M., one of the LIFE South Moderators echoes that sentiment, saying, “As a Marianist Brother, I personally found great joy in witnessing the ways our students connected with their peers from other Marianist institutions throughout the country. It delighted me to see LIFErs from Florida and Texas teach our students how to sing the Marianist Doxology in English and Spanish.”
Although every member of the class of 2023 was given the opportunity to apply to become part of the LIFE program last spring, only 12 students were selected after writing essays and being interviewed about their motivations and intentions for taking part in such an intensive faith-formation program.
The 2022-2023 Marianist LIFE Leaders are: Julia Baratta ’23; Colleen Bayley ’23; Joaquin Chungata ’23; Jimmy Ganosis ’23, Gabrielle Iadevaio ’23; Noah Jackson ’23; Micaela Maywald ’23; Matthew Meaney ’23; Kaitlin Messina ’23; Colin Reese ’23; Gabriella Sankovich ’23; and Zach Vogt ’23. Bro. Patrick Cahill, S.M. and Ms. Lauren Doodian ’12 serve as moderators, while Mr. James O’Brien serves as the in-school coordinator for the program. The continued guidance and curation of the program by Fr. Daniel Griffin, S.M. ’02 as Chaplain for LIFE South has been instrumental in putting Firebirds in the national spotlight of Marianist LIFE. Fr. Dan continues to inspire Kellenberg Memorial’s Marianist LIFE Leaders to bring the unique, universal charism of the Society of Mary to the entire Firebird Family.

MARIANIST LIFE Leader Lessons
“The thing I have enjoyed the most about Marianist LIFE is sharing our experiences with our peers. I love passing the mission onto the entire school while taking action to bring our lessons from Tecaboca to Kellenberg to make a change!”
JULIA BARATTA ’23
“During my time at Tecaboca, I was struck by the realization that we may all have different faith journeys, but as a community, we all can experience the truest form of God and grow closer to Him! In terms of bringing the message home, I have most enjoyed coming up with fun slogans
and themes for the monthly Masses and presenting personal stories and reflections to inspire and rejuvenate the faith lives of the student body.”
JIMMY GANOSIS ’23
“The biggest lesson I learned at the LIFE program in San Antonio was to never wish anything away. The lack of technology pushed us students to connect with each other and God, and to always live in the moment.”
COLLEEN BAYLEY ’23
“One thing I learned from being in Texas is to always be present. It is easy to always have your mind on the next goal or thinking about the future. But it is extremely difficult to be truly present in whatever situation you are in. Being in Texas helped me learn this through the meditation we would do before prayer services and not having access to our phones.”
JOAQUIN CHUNGATA ’23
“One thing I enjoyed the most is the impact I see our work having on the students. The younger students have been coming up to all of us asking how they can be involved and it’s truly wonderful to see them wanting to strengthen their faith, as well as the faith lives of their classmates!”
GABRIELLE IADEVAIO ’23
“The biggest lesson I have learned from Marianist LIFE is how to grow in faith as a leader. Learning about the faith experiences of other people from around the country has allowed me to better understand how someone else’s faith journey impacts them. This has taught me that as a LIFE Leader, I must understand that everybody is at a different point in their faith life, and it’s important to simply be there to guide them as best as possible. I believe that understanding others has allowed me to deepen my own faith and has given me the skills to help others just as I have been helped.”
NOAH JACKSON ’23
HEART & MIND 14
“What I most enjoy about bringing Marianist LIFE back to Kellenberg is having a whole new group of people to share our enthusiasm with. Coming back from Texas, we were all very excited, and it’s so great to see the students here excited with us.”
MATTHEW MEANEY ’23
“The biggest lesson I learned at Marianist LIFE this summer was even though we all shared the same faith, each individual I met was unique. Meeting new people from across the United States gave me the opportunity to learn new cultures and traditions.”
MICAELA MAYWALD ’23
“What I’ve enjoyed most about bringing what I learned from Texas back to Kellenberg is being able to guide younger students to become more adjusted to the Kellenberg routine, and seeing them become more involved in the school. Also working with the other LIFE Leaders and seniors has been a ton of fun.”
“I have enjoyed bringing different ideas and concepts we learned at Tecaboca to help do my part to inspire students at Kellenberg to renew their faith lives. With each new challenge during each month, I have enjoyed seeing how the lessons we learned from Marianist LIFE help Kellenberg students and faculty members alike become closer to God and one another!”
GABRIELLA SANKOVICH ’23
“I have definitely enjoyed seeing students’ faith grow even more at Kellenberg because of the lessons that we brought back from Marianist LIFE. It’s amazing to see the younger kids at school really identify with our new and creative ways of sharing the faith from our different promotion videos to giving WITNESS talks about our journeys.”
KAITLYN MESSINA ’23
“Bringing LIFE to Kellenberg Memorial has brought a new meaning to the school community. I have seen personal growth in myself, especially in the public speaking realm having to speak to an auditorium about my faith journey.”
