A LETTE RFROM TH EP RI N CI PAL

Dear Kellenberg Memorial Family,

Kellenberg Memorial celebrated its 35th Anniversary on July 1, 2022. It is with a spirit of gratitude for God’s blessing on our foundation, faculty, students, alumni, and parents that we remember this anniversary. We have grown from being a school for grades 9-12 with 1,400 students to a robust middle and high school grades 6-12 with nearly 2,700 students registered for this fall.

Kellenberg has not only seen growth in enrollment over the past two years, but our campus has also expanded as well. Thanks to our first-ever capital campaign, we have added a retreat house in Islip, additional fields and tennis courts on Glenn Curtiss Blvd., state-of-the-art science labs in the Jim and Diane Rowen STEM Center, im proved bleachers on St. Matthew Field, and a resurfaced track. By the start of school this fall, students and families will be greeted with a beautiful new entrance on Glenn Curtiss Blvd.

Another area of growth is our curri culum. We have shifted the Biology, Chemistry, and Physics sequences to begin in freshman year, thus allowing for electives during senior year. Current electives in science include

Engineering, Geology, Astronomy, Health Sciences, Sports Medicine, Environmental Science, and Forensics. The Math curriculum has also been adapted to allow the opportunity to study Precalculus, Calculus I, Calculus II, and Statistics and Finance. Students also have the option of earning college credits for many of their junior and senior level courses. Finally, in the last issue of Heart and Mind you read extensively about the Writing Lab that is now a requirement for all freshmen.

We often speak of the education of the heart and the mind. We have made great strides in the curriculum and technology that directly impacts the mind. The education of the heart is more challenging and, in many ways, the more important aspect of Catholic education. COVID is not the only social issue we have had to address over the past two years. The social awareness of race, culture, and equality are also areas where we have been making changes, adaptations, and expanding our programs. This issue of Heart and Mind provides an in-depth look at a new club at Kellenberg Memorial High School called “One Heart, One Mind, Many Cultures.” This club is a direct

result of listening to many students and alumni who would like to see more opportunities for learning, dialogue, and sharing across cultural and racial groups. Two years ago, we opened a Student Life Office under the direction of Mrs. Jennifer Marr Mulligan ’96. Many sensitive conversations have taken place through mutual dialogue and active listening. Conflict resolution plays a big part in the office. It is a place where students can turn if they experience bul lying, bias, disagreements, and confrontations. Part of our Kellenberg Culture pro gram for freshmen further develops lessons on civility, order, and respect.

ents. Many excellent recommenda tions have come from this committee including bi-lingual tour guides at Open House, translated school infor mation available in Spanish and Creole, and a cultural survey of our

students so that they can flourish aca demically, socially, and emotionally.

We have further responded to the call for greater social recognition of multiple cultural experiences by ex panding our Advisory Board to include an Equity and Excellence Committee. Claudy Damus Makelele ’93, P’23,’26 chairs this committee. Our Assistant Principal for Academics, Mrs. Angela Watson Cameron ’03, is a member of this committee with several other graduates, parents, and alumni par

students which yielded a very interest ing fact that our student body traces its roots to 78 different countries!

To address the mounting socialemotional and mental health needs of our students, we now have two fulltime social workers, full-time guid ance counselors, and anticipate a school psychologist in the Fall. These supports play a key role in ensuring that we have met all the needs of our

Our efforts to be more sensitive and welcoming have only strengthened our already strong Catholic identity. We are all God’s children. We are all created in the image and likeness of God. As we deepen our Catholic roots at Kellenberg Memorial, we know that there will always be more work to be done. In our pursuit of educating minds and hearts, we rec ognize that educating minds is often the easy part. Educating hearts, especially to recognize and respect the dignity of each person from the moment of conception to the time of death, is a constant and ongo ing effort. Please keep us in your prayers as we prepare the next generation to be faithful Christians, loyal citizens, and loving spouses.

CELEBRATIONS OF FAITH

May Crowning

On May 20th, the Kellenberg Memorial family gathered together to celebrate the May Crowning by adorning the Blessed Mother with a crown of flowers. With the assistance of the Floral Park Fire Department, faculty member Mrs. Penny Riiska (pictured with Fr. Thomas Cardone, S.M.; her daughter, Courtney, and her husband, Billy) had the honor to crown Mary this year. She told The Phoenix newspaper, “I was very honored to have been asked to crown Mary for the May Crowning. It was special because Kellenberg is a Marianist school. I have always had a devotion to Mary, but it has certainly grown stronger as I have experienced the faith life here at Kellenberg. I know that my grandmother, who was very devoted to Mary, would have been so happy if she could have seen it. It was a beautiful day that I was fortunate enough to share with my family, students, and my Kellenberg family.”

Communion Breakfasts

Each spring, every grade level at Kellenberg Memorial gathers for Communion Breakfasts during Lent. Firebird families celebrate Mass together and then gather for breakfast and camaraderie. The annual Communion Breakfasts are just one of many ways that Kellenberg Memorial encourages families to explore and grow their faith lives together.

UNITED IN CHRIST: New Club Celebrates the Firebird Family’s Mosaic of Cultures

The Student Life Office at Kellenberg Memorial High School rolled out a popular new club in the 20212022 school year which explores the mosaic of cultures that make up the heritage of the Firebird Family. The One Heart, One Mind, Many Cultures Club is dedicated to developing positive student opportunities which engender a closeness with Christ and promote the awareness of, and appreciation for, diverse cultures. The mission of the club is to promote meaningful dialogue, cooperative spirits, and open hearts to help foster relationships that are rooted in Christ.

—Romy Limonta ’22

Serving a school community of over 2,600 students, Kellen berg Memorial’s Student Life Office aims to build a cooper ative synergy amongst the student body, faculty members, and administration. With the ultimate goal of supporting students’ growth as Christians, while educating the mind and nurturing the heart, the introduction of a club ded icated to fostering knowledge and respect of the many cul tural backgrounds of the Firebird Family was a natural extension of growth.

“This club gave me the opportunity to travel around the world without leaving my home. It gave me a deeper appreciation of not only my culture, but other cultures as well. This year was the first year of the club, and I can’t wait to see what I’ll learn next!” —Katelyn Takes ’23

Assistant Principal for Student Life Mrs. Jennifer Mulligan ’96 shares, “Kellenberg Memorial is always looking to em brace each and every one of our students. Our goal since the doors opened in 1987 has been to educate not only the minds of our students, but also the hearts, through COR (Civility, Order, and Respect). When we love and respect

others, every student feels valued and accepted. Our teachers are successful in educating our students and celebrating diversity through interactive and dynamic lessons. On a student level, the One Heart, One Mind, Many Cultures Club has worked with stu dents peer-to-peer to embrace all the wonderful cultures that em body our students through song, dance, history, trips, art, culinary exploration, and more. It has been an exciting year of discovery, love, and acceptance.”

The One Heart, One Mind, Many Cultures Club hit the school year on the ground running by creating a survey to dig deeper into the various backgrounds encapsulated within the student body. The survey found that the Firebird Family represents a total of 78 na tions worldwide! Next, the members of the club went about plan ning activities to take place throughout the year which would shine a light on a number of different heritages and the accompa nying cultural celebrations associated with each one. Assistant Principal for Academics Mrs. Angela Cameron ’03 explains, “The club successfully highlighted several cultural celebrations and historical events throughout the year including Hispanic Ameri can Heritage Month, Chinese New Year, St. Patrick's Day, Black History Month, Women's History Month, Haitian Flag Day, June teenth, and more. Through exploration of and discussions on a

diversity of backgrounds, viewpoints, cultures, hobbies, and more, the students continue to find unity.”

Rooted in the knowledge that all of God’s people throughout the world are connected through Jesus’ promise of our salvation through repentance and faith, the One Heart, One Mind, Many Cultures Club organized a special way to honor Mary, Mother of God, during the month of May. Students recorded videos of them selves explaining the apparitions of Mary across the globe. The vi deos contained stories of Our Lady of the Pillar, Our Lady of Good Health, Our Lady of the Good Event, and Our Lady of Gietrzwald. These pieces gave insight into how people around the world praise Mary, while also highlighting the Firebird Family’s love and devo tion to Jesus, through Mary.

Saint Maria Elizabeth Hesselblad once said, “The Lord has called us from different nations, but we must be united with one heart and one soul.” Every member of the Firebird Family has his or her own unique story representing a thread in the fabric of our cul tural mosaic. It is when all of these individual threads are woven together and strengthened in the Body of Christ that the tapestry of life truly reflects the vibrancy and utter beauty of God’s con stant love for all of His people.

MR. DOUG CIOFFI ’97

When and how did you end up teaching at Kellenberg Memorial?

I started teaching at KMHS in September of 2001. I submitted my resume and got a phone call in August about an open posi tion. So my first year I taught American History to the eighth grade and Scripture to the ninth grade.

What have you taught and moderated/ coached during your time here so far?

I have taught a number of classes while here at KMHS, mainly in the religion and history departments. I have taught scrip ture, eighth-grade religion, and church history. Within the history department I have taught American History 8, Euro pean History, and American History I. I even taught one year of freshman typ ing. In terms of after-school, my life has been very busy. When I started 21 years ago, I got involved in the PREP program and have been assigned to five parishes over the last 20 years. The main activity

I was involved in early here at KMHS was Speech and Debate. For seventeen years I ran the program after Mr. Benintendi. I have lots of great memories and students from those years. Since 2009, I have been involved in the baseball program, most recently as a coach on the varsity staff. Go Firebirds! More recently I have been involved with the social media coverage of the school. I see myself as having my own AAA. I help to manage the ARK, ATHLETICS and ALUMNI social media. Photography has become a big part of my life at KMHS as well. I’ve been taking pictures for events and sports, as well as moderating the Latin School Photogra phy Club. After ten years on traffic super vision, I am back in the building on Mondays with my sophomore sodality. This year, I became a moderator of our newest club, One Heart, One Mind, Many Cultures, where we get to learn about

our students and their distinct heritages and backgrounds.

What is your favorite thing about teaching at Kellenberg Memorial?

There are so many great things about teaching at KMHS. Honestly, it is very hard to pick just one. The support from the Marianist Com munity and the administration is unmatched. They allow you to be who you are in the classroom and let you “spread your own wings.”

It is also so great to be able to share your faith with your students with all the great activities we have throughout the year. And lastly, the students here at KMHS are special. You really get to know your students on a personal level and they are so respectful and just a joy to be around.

What is so unique about an education that impacts both the heart and the mind?

Being involved in so many elements of the school allows me to really get to know and understand my students in the class room and after school. Not every lesson has to be the facts of a Civil War battle or on the Declaration of Independence. There are times when just a simple conversation in class about current events really or anything at all is more appropriate to truly engage the students. At Kellenberg I feel we all see our students, our club members, and our student-athletes as a whole. There is so much more going on at KMHS than just homework, tests, and quizzes.

What do you hope to instill in your students?

The first thing I always say in September is, “History is fun.” I want my students to come into class looking forward to the topic of the day. I also want them to feel

comfortable enough to participate and engage in the class. Where is the fun if every class is 38 minutes of me lecturing?

I want them to think about the events at hand, their impact, and their importance. I want my students to ask questions, chal lenge ideas, and understand why deci sions are made. And lastly, I always say how history is about perspective. There are many events that are not so clear cut.

It is like life. So many times there are moments where people view the same scenario differently... so let’s discuss, explore ideas, and at the same time be respectful of our fellow classmates.

What does the phrase “Firebird Family” mean to you?

This is easy because that is exactly what KMHS is... a family. Over the last twenty years I have made some of my greatest friends working at KMHS, not to mention the friends I made when I was a student. KMHS is my extended family.

Also, the support I get from my colleagues and my students is one of my favorite things about KMHS. There is a genuine concern for each other. The friendly greet ings before class, stopping by to say hello, or simply asking for a photo at homecom ing makes KMHS stand out.

COMING SPRING

COMING SPRING

Spreading Our Wings CAPITAL CAMPAIGN

This spring, Kellenberg Memorial kicked off the public phase of the school’s inaugural capital campaign, Spreading Our Wings. Many exciting improvements have already been completed as part of the Spreading Our Wings capital campaign. In 2018, we acquired 6 acres of waterfront land in Islip that is now home to our retreat house, Stella Maris. Our track has been resurfaced and the bleachers have been renovated and now feature a press box. A new parking lot has added over 200 parking spots. The property on the corner of Glenn Curtiss Blvd. and Hempstead Turnpike is now home to a brand new athletic complex featuring two turf fields and our six-court tennis center. In January 2021, we unveiled the Jim & Diane Rowen STEM Center. The space is a masterpiece of thoughtful design and innovation in the areas of science, tech nology, engineering, and math.

Work is nearly completed on a redesigned campus entranceway on Glenn Curtiss Blvd. The final project that will be made possible by Spreading Our Wings is the addition of a 60,000-square-foot arts and athletic center. Coming in spring 2024, the Firebird Center for Arts & Athletics will include two basket ball courts, practice spaces for the Dance Team, Cheerleading, and Blue & Gold. It will also feature a small bowling alley, rehearsal space for the band and orchestra, and a golf simulator.

Thank you to the generous donors who have already made a commitment to the campaign. Help us cross the finish line of this $10M cam paign by joining your fellow Firebirds in mak ing Kellenberg history by becoming one of our “1,000 Donors Giving $1,000.” Spread over three years, your gift of $1,000 breaks down to just $28 a month.
