Core Principles

What is AI?

Artificial intelligence (AI) uses algorithms and machine learning to analyse large data sets, recognise patterns, make predictions, and provide recommendations. AI systems learn and improve from training, similar to humans For teachers, understanding this process is vital to recognise the benefits and precautions necessary for integrating AI into education.

Safeguarding Risks

Generative AI tools, such as text and image generators, introduce new risks to student safety. These include non-consensual creation of explicit media, online exploitation using AI-generated content, reinforcement of biases, and normalisation of harmful behaviours Enhanced safeguarding is essential for protecting children and young people. Find more information about how to use AI safely please see the cross-phase risk assessment.

KELLETT’S APPROACH TO AI

At Kellett, we embrace Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a powerful tool to enhance teaching, learning, and innovation while prioritising human agency, safety, and integrity. We empower staff and students to use AI responsibly and effectively, fostering an understanding of how it works, its benefits, and limitations. By promoting ethical use and transparency, we ensure AI aligns with our values of Kindness, Respect, and Integrity. While AI supports learning and innovation, human insight, empathy, and critical thinking remain central to its use.

Staff AI Guidelines

As a school, we are aware of how regularly and widely AI is being used by our staff. Below are some guidelines to ensure we are using this tool responsibly and safely; this will be reviewed periodically by the cross-school AI Working Party.

Always anonymise student, school or staff information in AI prompts. You should never input any personal details about students, staff or the school into any AI platform unless Kellett have a data protection agreement with the platform.

The more information you provide in your AI prompt, the better the outcome – include as much detail as possible.

Always review the content generated with the help of AI; be critical and make any necessary adjustments. AI tools trained on human data will inherently reflect societal biases and this must be considered by teachers creating content with it.

Be cautious with the tools you choose. Always check their data privacy policies or ask for advice before proceeding

Avoid becoming overly dependent on AI; treat it as a collaborator instead of becoming reliant on AI to handle all your tasks or create all your lesson materials.

Staff remain accountable for leading pedagogical and academic decisions. AI may inform choices but not determine outcomes.

Acceptable & Unacceptable uses by staff

Acceptable Uses of AI

Enhancing lesson plans with AIgenerated resources

Unacceptable Uses of AI

Using AI to replace direct teaching responsibilities

Providing personalised feedback on student assignments

Relying solely on AI for grading without human oversight

Using AI for administrative or menial tasks, such as scheduling

Incorporating AI tools to aid in differentiated instruction

Training students on how to use AI responsibly and ethically

Utilising AI to assist with language translation for ESL students

Employing AI to aid in generating quizzes and practice tests

Sharing sensitive student data with AI platforms without proper privacy measures

Allowing AI to make final decisions on student progress and outcomes

Using AI to cover up gaps in subject knowledge without improving your expertise

Depending on AI to handle all communication with parents and guardians

Using AI-generated content without verifying its accuracy and relevance

About the AI Working Party

The AI Working Party is composed of staff from all phases of the school with the intention of providing guidance and support for AI use at Kellett. AI holds huge potential for education and Kellett should be at the forefront of this new innovative field The working party can be approached for support and guidance
