2018 Tama Bull Sale

Page 1

Welcome to the Inaugural Tama Cataloged Bull Sale! Once we decided to host a consignment bull sale to service east central Iowa’s cow calf producers, I turned to some great seedstock producers that I have been so fortunate to have met in this industry. I was overwhelmed with support and for that I will be forever grateful. Along the way, I have had the opportunity to meet some new progressive breeders, which shared our vision of what we thought a bull sale should be. We asked them to earmark some of their best for ‘our’ sale. When I say ‘our’ sale I mean it, I hope that this continues to grow with our consignors and prospective buyers. Cause let’s face it, we all know that if you offer what the customer wants, then they will be back next year with their neighbors. We all have a stake in the future success of this industry. Our mission for this sale was simple…to present you with all the information on a SELECT set of bulls that represent the best that our consignors produce, so that you can decide which bull(s) will go out and go to work for you. Over the years we have all learned that we can’t improve unless we are able to measure it. So, we have gave you as much information possible on these great bulls. We have already sorted the sale bulls to meet three minimum criteria: 1) Minimum 1,100-pound adjusted yearling weight 2) Minimum 11.5-square inch ultrasound ribeye measurement 3) Minimum 32-centimeter scrotal circumference measurement I sure hope that you will be able to join us on sale night, Monday, April 30 at 6 p.m. But if not, stop in on Sunday or Monday during the day to look at the bulls, I think you will be pleased with what you see. If you can’t attend the sale, remember you may bid online, by phone or by confidential proxy bid.

A S A V Priority son with a great dispostion. A really smoth shouldered bull. With the MGS being Connealy Final Product, this bull will be suitable to work on heifers.

236E is as wide based as you can make one. Plenty of muscle and comes from a cow that is long sided and nice uddered. There is more growth here than the genomic EPD's indicate.

Here is a herd sire for the Purebred, the commercial and the club calf breeder for sure. Big Money is an own son of Daddy’s Money who was the Grand Champion Bull of the 2013 American Royal and the NAILE. Big Money’s dam, Miss Beare 6Z, also produce the top selling bull in the 2017 Tama Livestock Bull Sale, fetching a $4500 winning bid, sold to J. Black Commodities, Muleshoe, Tx. Big Money really excels in his balance, structural soundness. This calf has been our favorite Maintainer of the entire Maine calf crop since he hit the ground. An actual BW of 79#, couple that with his calving ease numbers on both top and bottom sides of his pedigree makes him an excellent choice on heifers.

Interpreting the Ultrasound Data The ultrasound traits measured are rump and rib fat, ribeye area, and % intramuscular fat (IMF). The ribeye image is collected between the 1213th ribs where the rib fat and ribeye area are measured. The IMF images are evaluated between the 12-13th ribs as well, but in longitudinal images instead. In fact, a minimum of four IMF images are collected and the values are averaged. This value would be correlated to the marbling trait for quality grade. The rump fat image is collected between the hooks and the pins of the animal and gives another indication of external body fat. Ultrasound data can be evaluated similarly to other performance traits. Ultrasound EPD's should be the best indicator of an animal's carcass trait potential. Like other performance traits, find the breed average of each trait and compare that to the animal's EPDs in question. Above average means the offspring are likely to have a higher than average value of a given trait (depending on the accuracy value). To increase values of a certain trait in your herd, choose the higher EPDs for that trait. Another method of reporting ultrasound data is in ratios, 100 being average. The ratios of any given trait take into consideration the average of the contemporary group (animals of the same sex managed together with the same diet and environment). An animal with a ratio above 100 for a given trait would have a higher than average adjusted value for that trait. Again, if you are looking to increase a trait's value, look for a ratio over 100. Ratios do not have the benefit of utilizing ancestral information as EPDs do, but can still be a meaningful tool within the contemporary group. Age adjusted values or the actual values may be reported in some instances along with EPDs or ratios. Like other performance data, actual values are more of an indication of management or age of an animal. For instance, a 600 pound weaning weight is not an indication of an animal's performance without knowing if 600 pounds is above or below average in its contemporary group. Likewise, ultrasound values, adjusted or actual, do not indicate the potential of an animal. It is unfair to compare one ranch to another based on actual or adjusted values. That would only be differentiating management practices or feeding programs. Actual values should be adjusted and adjusted values should be evaluated within contemporary groups. Ultrasound has become a useful tool in evaluating live animals for carcass traits. The ultrasound measurements correspond to the carcass traits evaluated to determine Yield Grade and Quality Grade. Perhaps the greatest advantage of ultrasound data is that the dams, as well as the sires, can be included in an individual's EPD's. by Becky Hays, Manager, UltraInsights Processing Lab

57E is a 3/4 brother 53E. If you are looking to have a pair of like bulls to make your calves uniform, here's your chance. Legend stamped this one with a 60 lb BW. The influence of Mulberry on the dam side will make females your neighbors will want in their pastures. 57E averaged about 4 lb of ADG after weaning. 57E was raised by a heifer, again showing the growth and power in this bull and the mothering qualities that come from Mulberry. These bulls will get the job done

53E is a 3/4 brother to 57E. He is a low BW bull by the popular Genex Legend bull. Legend is widely used for his calve ease and growth with the Red Angus power bull, Mulberry on the dam side, you will have some high demand females. A nice 76 lb BW and a wean weight over 600 lbs, followed by an ADG of 4 lbs. This guy is going to add pounds to your calves. Raised by a heifer, that did a fantastic job and that shows how much power and growth these bulls have

If maternal cow power is your goal, this bulls dam would be on the top of many lists. We purchased her from the Express Angus Ranch herd a few years ago because we wanted some of the time proven Royal Lass bloodlines in our herd. Maternal sisters to this bull remain in our herd as profitable dams themselves.

These two bulls (lots 46 and 48) come from the same cow family which has also turned out to be a very profitable family. We purchased Lot #48’s dam from the Kaefring herd in 2010 and she has never disappointed us. Daughters and Granddaughters, like Lot #46’s dam, continue to impress us as well as others in all categories including performance and phenotypically speaking.

When you’re in the business of producing seedstock and you find out there’s a bull sale 12 miles from home, and you’ve got to bring a good one. This guy touches a lot of bases, calving ease, mass, docility, and maternal power backed the legendary bulls Total Recall, Built Right, and In Dew Time. Total Cowboy stood 3rd in the March division of foundation bulls at the Iowa State Fair. Here’s a bull that offers a ton of potential to fit many different programs.

DEFINITIONS OF CATALOG INFORMATION: Birth Wt - Actual birth weight as reported by bull owner. 205 Wt -Actual weaning weight adjusted to the standard 205 days with an adjustment for age of dam. 205 Wt Ratio -- Within herd ratio compared to other bulls in the on-farm contemporary group. Wt. – Actual weight taken at yearling/ultrasound time. Adj. Yr. Wt. - The bull’s weight adjusted to 365 days of age and adjusted for age of dam using the respective breed associations or the standard test-station BIF formula. Scro CM - Scrotal circumference in centimeters. Ultrasound measurements - See attached page. Percent Retail Product - the amount of salable meat the carcass will yield assuming a 63% dress of the final weight and 2.5% kidney, pelvic & heart fat. Calculated using the standard BIF formula. REGISTRATION PAPERS: All sale bulls have been registered with their respective breed associations. Copies are available to review in the sale office for other EPDs or indexes published by the various breed associations. Registration papers will be transferred to the buyer by the sale management. EPD INFORMATION: An expected progeny difference (EPD) is prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform in comparison with other animals, of the same breed, in the evaluation. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. EPDs are provided by the national breed associations for each bull. The breed average EPDs are listing in the sale catalog within the breed heading. You may compare each bull with that average to determine his strength in each trait. Accuracy of an EPD is a measure of reliability. It is a function of the amount of information used in the calculation of a specific EPD. Based on this definition, yearling bull's accuracies will be moderate to low. Research, however, indicates that EPDs for young non-parent bull are 8-10 times more accurate for making selection decisions than adjusted weights and ratios.

DEFINITIONS OF CATALOG INFORMATION CONT... Calving Ease Direct (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire's calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth Weight EPD (BW), Weaning Weight EPD (WW), Yearling Weight EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire's ability to transmit those weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. Calving Ease Maternal (CEM), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf daughters. It predicts the average ease with which a sire's daughters will calve as first-calf heifers when compared to daughters of other sires. Maternal Milk EPD (MM), is a predictor of a sire's genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf's weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability. Carcass Weight EPD (HCW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marbling EPD (MARB), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area EPD (REA), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Fat Thickness EPD (BF), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external fat thickness at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire's progeny compared to progeny of other sires. BREED SPECIFIC INDEXES & EPDs Angus $Value Indexes, are multi-trait selection indexes, expressed in dollars per head, to assist beef producers by adding simplicity to genetic selection decisions. The $Value is an estimate of how future progeny of each sire are expected to perform, on average, compared to progeny of other sires in the database if the sires were randomly mated to cows and if calves were exposed to the same environment. Weaned Calf Value ($W), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for pre-weaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size. Feedlot Value ($F), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post weaning merit compared to progeny of other sires. Grid Value ($G), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for carcass grid merit compared to progeny of other sires. Quality Grade ($QG), $QG represents the quality grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $QG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on improving quality grade. The carcass marbling (Marb) EPD contributes to $QG. Yield Grade ($YG), $YG represents the yield grade segment of the economic advantage found in $G. $YG is intended for the specialized user wanting to place more emphasis on red meat yield. It provides a multi-trait approach to encompass ribeye, fat thickness and weight into an economic value for red meat yield. Beef Value ($B), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for post weaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. Cow Energy Value ($EN), expressed in dollars savings per cow per year, assesses differences in cow energy requirements as an expected dollar savings difference in daughters of sires. A larger value is more favorable when comparing two animals (more dollars saved on feed energy expenses). Components for computing the cow $EN savings difference include lactation energy requirements and energy costs associated with differences in mature cow size. Total maternal (TM), An index that combines growth and milk information as a prediction of the weaning weight performance of calves from a sire’s daughters. As an index, this value is not reported with an accompanying accuracy. A greater TM value means a mother that returns comparatively higher weaning weights on her calves. TM Index = MK EPD + ½ WW EPD. $Cow, Represents the genetic value in dollars of profit of an animal when retained as a replacement female relative to other animals in the herd. A higher number represents more profitable genetics for maternal productivity. $Cow will serve producers in selecting bulls that will sire daughters with stayability and reproductive efficiency as well as other traits that lead to profitability in a production system, such as milk, calving ease, moderate mature weight and the ability of calves to gain. A female’s genetics also influence the performance of her calves in the feedlot and at slaughter, so traits such as feed efficiency and carcass value are also included in $Cow. Efficiency profit index (EPI), An economic selection index developed to aid producers in selecting for more feed efficient cattle that still have acceptable amounts of gain. The EPI provides slight negative pressure on intake, while keeping gain at a constant value. By selecting on this index, producers will be able to find those animals that gain the same amount as their contemporaries while eating less. Feedlot profit index (FPI), An economic selection index designed to aid producers in selecting sires whose progeny will perform in the feedlot and are sold on a grade and yield standpoint. Well ranking sires for FPI have higher marbling and carcass weight than their contemporaries. As a terminal index, little emphasis is put on maternal traits such as stayability and calving ease. HerdBuilder (HB), producers selecting bulls to develop profitable replacement females & maximize the value of non-replacement marketed progeny should incorporate the HerdBuilder Index into their selection decisions. Stayability, heifer pregnancy & CE plus marbling, YG & growth EPDs impact the HerdBuilder Index. GridMaster (GM), Use the GridMaster Index if your operation’s primary goal is maximizing profitability of feeders in the feedyard & on the rail. Marbling, YG, & growth EPDs are traits of importance in GM Index. Stayability (STAY), expressed as the probability that an animal’s daughters will remain in production to at least six years of age when compared to the daughters of another animal. A measure of sustained fertility that probably reflects traits such as fleshing ability and structural soundness. Yield Grade (YG), is measured in a carcass yield grade units/score at 475 days and low values indicate a lower yield grade. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW), pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. All-Purpose Index (API), evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI), evaluates sires for use on mature cows with all the offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield.
