ECHO: Cemetery Expansion in Venice, Italy Team Project: Fifth Year
San Michele’s historical perimeter makes a bold introduction to visitors as they pass the gated wall, providing privacy and confinement to the burial grounds within. The ideology of this wall continues into the expansion, now acting as an organizational device, as well as a permanent remembrance element, echoing what was once there and the memories tied to the past. The wall provides necessary linkage to programmatic segments while offering opportunities to reflect, strengthen and inspire users, as they find peace and acceptance. Through remembrance and honor, one finds harmony along the site, as it molds itself into the rich Venetian context and the calmness of the lagoon. Utilization of light, water, landscape, and a play on individual versus group spaces, will promote a sense of peace and enlightenment for the living, as they experience a lingering trace of their loved ones.

Rampart Disaster Relief & Nature Center Team Project: Fourth Year
The views of Rampart Reservoir, Pikes Peak and the majestic rolling hills are celebrated through different parts of the program. Two arched wings form a protective courtyard which is used for overflow space in the event of a disaster. The joint of these two intersecting wings creates a blended area for observation and learning, as the Nature Center integrates itself onto the walls, while also framing views of the site. The curvature of the roof emulates the surrounding landscape through the elegant manipulation of the rolling mountains. Three distinct zones were created to accommodate the nature center, disaster and an atrium connecting the user to the natural surroundings of the site. The entire design process responds to the reoccurring wildfires in the Colorado area.

ACSA Steel Bridge Competition Team Project: Third Year
Two Architecture students collaborated with an Interior Design student to create a design for a bridge, including inhabitable program through the use of steel construction. Together the team designed an elegant connection between two neighborhoods, responding to both the history of the railroad as well as the residential community of the modern city. Arches provide support and the physical linkage while suspending a museum. Two main arches provide support for the bridge and enclosure. As users enter the elevated paths, they gradually ascend toward the center where the museum is located.

114th Stewardson Competition Individual Project: Fifth Year
The proposal offers a space of transition between the urban context of Berlin and the peaceful Tiergarten. A platform rises to suggest an inviting serene pavilion; a space for users to enjoy an collection of light, water and nature. Light is captured through the open concept as well as what is open to skylight. Warm shadows constantly shift throughout the space from the wooden and aluminum rod structures. These features are positioned horizontally, to provide a sense of privacy and/or enclosure. Water is weaved into the design as reflecting pools and moving water surrounding the user, always offering a calm, serene space nestled into the urban context. The pavilion acts as a transition between spaces, giving users the opportunity of experience, whether it be passing through or deciding to stop and let the space entertain them with its tranquil environment.

Bicycle Factory
Individual Project: Third Year Built adjacent to the Reading Viaduct, a bicycle factory mends itself to the wall giving new meaning to the abandoned site. The building acts as a factory for design and production for bicycles, while accommodating the community with a bike shop and access to learning the process of bike design and development. Other than specific program, the building also presents users with the opportunity of entering up onto the Viaduct. A perforated screen continues upward from the existing stone wall demanding a close relationship between occupants and the viaduct. Access can be found both from the Viaduct as well as street level.

PHEED Education & Community Center Individual Project: Third Year
PHEED (Philadelphia Health, Energy, Education and Diversity) adapts to the existing William S. Peirce Middle School incorporating new use and a centralized hub for the community, promoting healthy living and learning styles. The building offers a series of subtracted pieces which allow for more light, ventilation, and communal space. Raising the market above street level promotes hierarchy as well as a gathering space for the community. The wide, monumental set of stairs from the sidewalk create an intriguing entrance to the covered outdoor space presenting a sense of subtraction and solidity surrounding the occupants. More light enters through the light well into the central spaces. The facades appear very solid from afar due to black metal sheets, however, cutouts can be seen which allow light to pass through the set back facades while also integrating the solidity and mass of the rest of the building.

Old City Art Institute
Individual Project: Second Year The form of the design is sculpted to reflect the function of the building. Programmatic elements include exhibition space, art labs, classrooms, and a cafe. Terraced roofs invite users outside where beautiful views of Philadelphia are revealed. The building is located in the lower portion of Old City bringing it close to Penns Peak.

Aurelian Wall Reactivation
Individual Project: Study Abroad: Rome, Italy - Fifth Year The Aurelian Walls encase the city of Rome and have existed since before the Roman Empire. As the city has developed, the walls have been forgotten and abandoned in some sections of the city. The task was to create a design which communicated intimately with the historic wall, engaging people with the past, reviving the respect and recognition of this prominent feature of the city. The structure becomes the spine running parallel to the wall, becoming the elevated pathway arching across the site. The repetitive rhythm acts as a screen which still permits light and views to cross over from either side.

Sketches
Independent Explorations: Study Abroad: Rome, Italy - Fifth Year During my time studying in Rome, I was encouraged to sketch how I saw the city both in terms of organizational and aesthetic qualities. Studying facades, plans, form, and positioning of buildings and other spaces around the city, helped provide a fuller understanding of the spatial organization and reasoning behind the intent. The parts I enjoyed most were, Palazzo Farnese, Pompeii, Jubilee Church, Vatican City and Campidoglio.
