Making the Vision Real 2014–15 INVESTORS REPORT

DEVELOPING LEADERS WHO INSPIRE GROWTH IN PEOPLE, ORGANIZATIONS AND MARKETS. THIS IS KELLOGG.

The world increasingly needs brave leaders who understand the power of business to create positive impact. Leaders who are agile and resilient, high impact and low ego, visionary and purposeful. To be effective, they must be able to navigate across sectors and boundaries, effectively collaborating regardless of the challenges they face. That is our purpose at Kellogg: Educate, equip and inspire brave leaders who build strong organizations and wisely leverage the power of markets to create lasting value. Guided by clearly focused initiatives — and energized by your generous support — Kellogg has made critical investments toward achieving that vision. Our progress has been real and significant. In these pages, you will see firsthand the impact your support has had on the school’s performance, our community as a whole, the practice of business and the lives of individuals worldwide. We also offer you a glimpse into some very exciting plans for things to come. Because of your generosity, we’ve been able to make significant progress quickly, but there is still a great deal of work to do. We look for your continued support to help us maintain our momentum and to make Kellogg’s vision a reality.

Three differentiating qualities power the Kellogg experience and distinguish our approach to developing leaders who are prepared and primed for growth.

OUR UNIQUE THOUGHT LEADERSHIP

OUR EXPANSIVE GLOBAL FOOTPRINT

OUR DISTINCTIVE CULTURE

Kellogg takes a distinctive approach to research and teaching — foundational departments integrated with strategic cross-disciplinary initiatives. As a direct result of this approach, our faculty constantly delivers new and relevant insights for business practice and our graduates leave prepared to tackle the toughest questions, solve the most complex problems and excel in their careers.

With your support, Kellogg has built the largest integrated global network, enabling us to offer the broadest array of international learning opportunities. In this dynamic educational ecosystem, our students acquire the edge they need — international business skills and experience, a broader worldview, and an expanded way of thinking across borders and cultures. They graduate ready to lead effectively in the global marketplace.

Kellogg creates an environment that requires teamwork and encourages risk-taking among colleagues who are as supportive as they are driven. In this high-impact, low-ego culture, we shape brave leaders who understand that working together and challenging each other to think in new ways delivers the best results. It is this balance of business intelligence and social acumen that fosters a pay-it-forward culture, distinguishes Kellogg leaders and equips them for success in a complex world.

Dear Alumni and Friends, Kellogg just completed another year of significant fundraising, surpassing the $250 million mark. We are well on our way — and on target — to reaching our $350 million goal. None of this would have been possible without the commitment of our alumni and friends. As we head into the final leg of our 7-Year Plan for Transformation, we are beginning to feel the impact of our hard work and see the upward arc of Kellogg’s new trajectory. This year’s Investors Report gives us the opportunity to look back and celebrate the tremendous strides we’ve made and those who have helped make this vision a reality. With two years remaining in our capital campaign, we can begin to see the future we have envisioned together. We close this year celebrating some key accomplishments: • Topping off our new 410,000-square-foot global hub this fall, the most visible evidence of Kellogg’s progress. Construction is scheduled to be completed in 2016, meaning we are just over a year away from our new home. • Welcoming the most accomplished and diverse Full-Time MBA class to Kellogg. The Class of 2017 boasts enrollment of 43 percent women and a 724 average GMAT score, both record highs. • Expanding what is already the largest global footprint with new international courses and the broadest array of learning options to ensure our students develop the skills and insights required to lead and thrive in the global economy. • Reveling in the intellectual achievements of our world-class faculty, including Jan Eberly, named co-editor of the Brookings Papers on Economic Activity, and David Besanko, who received the Aspen Faculty Pioneer Award for his teaching on business practices that contribute to a more inclusive economy. These achievements would not have been possible without your commitment to Kellogg’s future and to ensuring that Kellogg will continue to develop brave leaders who inspire growth in people, organizations and markets. Thank you for your continuing support and for providing the momentum we need to make our vision a reality. All the best,

Sally Blount ’92 Dean, Kellogg School of Management

DRIVING innovation IN THE CLASSROOM AND THE MARKETPLACE.

THOUGHT LEADERSHIP

Teaching the new art of complex problem-solving

Leaders today require a new approach to problem-solving, one that depends on cutting-edge marketplace knowledge and insight across disciplines and functions. Kellogg has met this need with unprecedented curricular innovation — more than 25 percent of our course offerings are new within the past three years. We’ve also introduced “pathways” for students who want to build expertise in emerging areas and evolving industries. A pathway is an integrated, cross-functional sequence of courses designed to address a particular skill set or industry for which there is active student and recruiter demand. Current pathways include data analytics, entrepreneurship, growth and scaling, health enterprise management, real estate, social impact, and venture capital and private equity.

SEVEN NEW COURSES IN GROWTH AND SCALING

THE MOST ROBUST DATA ANALYTICS CURRICULUM

Developing a cross-functional skill set to meet the challenge of growth Achieving growth, today’s most challenging business imperative, ranks among Kellogg’s top priorities in thought leadership and curriculum innovation. Informed by business leaders and alumni who confirmed that growth requires a cross-functional skill set, Kellogg has rolled out seven new growth-focused courses since 2014, offering a comprehensive — and distinctly differentiating — approach to growing and scaling a business successfully.

Teaching managers how to reap the rewards of big data and analytics Big data doesn’t make decisions; leaders do. Rather than train data scientists and technologists, Kellogg teaches business leaders how to harness the power of analytics for sound decision-making. Among our newest analytics courses is the science-based Visualization for Persuasion, a powerful combination of empirical evidence and the latest breakthroughs in cognitive science, computer science and graphic design that helps students master the data visualization skills and tools they need to showcase their ideas and convictions to persuade and convince.

CURRICULAR INNOVATION STARTING FROM THE CORE

Evolving the finance curriculum to meet marketplace realities To address the evolving role of MBAs in finance, faculty members in the Finance Department have revamped core courses and introduced new advanced classes to place a greater emphasis on valuation. For example, Global Entrepreneurial Finance equips students with tools to value privately held ventures based around the world — organizations for which there is typically incomplete data compared with publicly held firms.

THE YEAR IN REVIEW

In this unique experiential learning opportunity, Kellogg students team with counterparts at ESADE Business & Law School in Barcelona and Hong Kong University of Science and Technology to consult with international organizations on growth strategies while they strengthen their own understanding of international markets and learn to manage cross-cultural teams across time zones in a real-world, real-time business environment. The first participants tackled challenges, such as sustainable water use, growing a global sales force and launching products in emerging markets.

Students in the newly launched International Business Strategy Lab work with international companies to solve pressing challenges at the intersection of the public and private sectors. One Kellogg team traveled to Quito, Ecuador, where students worked with industry experts on a growth strategy to produce international-grade stevia for the Ecuadorian government, an initiative that led to the creation of 10,000 new jobs.

Exploring economic trends in emerging markets firsthand Two new Executive MBA Program experiential courses dive into the most pressing issues facing emerging economies: “TechVenture India” and “Global Marketplace: Consumer Growth in Brazil.” Students began with market-focused classes on campus and then traveled to those destinations to visit leading companies, study at local universities and meet with top business leaders.

REALIZING THE

vision OF OUR FUTURE home.

GLOBAL HUB

As Kellogg’s new 410,000-square-foot global hub materializes dramatically against the backdrop of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline, what was once a shared vision has become reality thanks in enormous measure to the unprecedented generosity of our alumni and friends. The building embodies Kellogg’s energy and spirit, combining the physical and virtual in new and unexpected ways to inspire innovative forms of learning and community interaction. The first of its type, the building exemplifies the next-generation business school — a flexible, multifaceted space that enables spontaneous idea sharing, experimentation, reflection and celebration.

FLEXIBLE AND ADAPTABLE TO OPTIMIZE LEARNING

ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY TO IMPROVE EDUCATION AND BUSINESS PRACTICE

DESIGNED TO PROMOTE COLLABORATION AND COMMUNITY

AT THE INTERSECTION OF SUSTAINABILITY AND BUSINESS STRATEGY

The new building is designed to maximize flexibility over time. As teaching styles and research evolve and as technology advances, classrooms and faculty spaces can easily be reimagined and reconfigured. Walls can be moved, reshaped and rewired in ways that will allow us to optimize learning and inspire innovation for years to come.

All classrooms and faculty spaces will be outfitted with state-of-the-art technology to foster new forms of learning and idea generation, creativity and virtual collaboration. Global interconnectivity will bring the world of business to our doorstep and extend our thought leadership throughout the international marketplace.

We’ve intentionally varied the sizes and configurations of workspaces to encourage experimentation and engagement — whether it’s case studies, discussions, brainstorming or group breakouts. Open and inviting, the light-filled communal spaces will stimulate dialogue and debate, promote spontaneous idea sharing and foster social interaction.

Our new home will stand as both a global hub of growth-minded leadership and a role model of exemplary stewardship of the world’s natural resources — a key concept in strategic business thinking today. On track to achieving LEED Gold certification, the building will be one of Northwestern University’s most eco-friendly, reducing energy consumption to at least 30 percent below local code requirements.

OVER DELIVERING

results that count Guided by passion and expertise, visionary Henry Bullock ’80 has built Menlo Equities into one of the West Coast’s premier commercial real estate companies

THE YEAR IN REVIEW

In early 2000, while much of the world was still caught up in the dot-com frenzy, Henry Bullock was preparing for the bubble to burst. He sold nearly 35 percent of Menlo’s 6-million-square-foot portfolio and refinanced the rest, “putting us in a position where we were able to weather the storm.” Menlo survived the downturn and went on to become one of the premier commercial real estate firms in the western United States. Bullock, the chairman and founder of Menlo Equities, is attuned to macroeconomic trends and financial markets, dating back to his experiences prior to launching Menlo in 1994. Bullock spent nearly two decades in real estate lending and debt and equity raising, first at Wells Fargo and later as a managing partner at The Shidler Group. In 2006, Bullock’s capital markets’ prescience enabled him to predict the now historic economic downturn. He downsized the firm again — from 7 million to 1.5 million square feet so he could “put the cash back in the pockets of our investors.”

Why I give to Kellogg

ellogg challenged us K to think critically and creatively and to approach problemsolving from multiple perspectives — invaluable skills that I continue to hone and that serve me well today.

—HENRY BULLOCK ’80

“Getting in early and knowing when to step out is a cornerstone of our investment philosophy that has enabled us to exceed our target returns by more than 10 percent over our 21-year history,” he says. Since its founding, Menlo has acquired or developed more than 100 properties for a total cost of approximately $2.7 billion. The firm focuses on meeting the real estate requirements of global firms such as Apple, Yahoo, Sony and Panasonic. Rather than take the company public, Bullock prefers the flexibility of a “lean” company, one that manages nearly $2 billion in assets with 25 employees. “Public companies come with several more layers of management and bureaucracy, not to mention costs,” he says. “It’s a lot more structured and a lot less entrepreneurial.”

POWERFUL EDUCATION,

powerful couple

Jay Cohen and Laura Cox, both ’88, cherished their time at Kellogg. Now they want to give back — to help the next generation of Kellogg graduates and beyond

36

THE YEAR IN REVIEW

Two of the best years of Jay Cohen and Laura Cox’s 35 years as a couple were spent attending and graduating from Kellogg together. Kellogg holds a special place for Cohen and Cox. Both agree that their education changed the way they view business and interact with people. “Intellectually, it was perfect for me, especially since I was always focused on going to business school after undergraduate,” Cohen said. “It was a dream come true.” The relationships they developed and lessons learned at Kellogg bore fruit over the years. Cohen started a wealth management firm in the San Francisco area, Cohen Capital Management Inc., and Cox has built a career in nonprofit leadership. She now serves as executive director of Bridge the Gap College Prep, a Marin City, California-based nonprofit that prepares low-income, at-risk children for college.

Why we give to Kellogg

lot of other donors gave A money to Kellogg to make it the institution it is, and we benefited from that. So now it’s our time to give back to Kellogg.

— JAY COHEN ’88 AND LAURA COX ’88

“The skills I had from Kellogg and the business skills I accumulated over the years really gave me the confidence to make the transition into the nonprofit world,” Cox said. “Without that background at Kellogg, I wouldn’t have been able to do that.” Cox and Cohen each took something unique away from their time at Kellogg. For Cohen, the focus on working in groups at Kellogg immediately gave him an advantage that continues to strengthen his career. Cox said she treasures her improved ability to think strategically and consider the whole picture of a business, from the competition to the company’s internal core. “That’s what Kellogg gives to someone coming in,” Cohen said. “They come in with a framework of what they’re going to do and they come out with a full breadth of skills that will stay with them forever.”

HIGH RISK,

high reward Bob Eckert ’77 employed business basics to pull Mattel from the brink

THE YEAR IN REVIEW

Never skip the on-campus interviews. Bob Eckert didn’t, when Kraft Foods came to Evanston, and it landed him his first job out of Kellogg with the then-Chicago-based company — a first step that launched Eckert toward a highly successful executive career. In 1977 Eckert took an entry-level marketing research position at Kraft. Twenty years later, he became president and CEO of the food industry leader. Trading food for toys, he relocated from the Midwest to the West Coast in 2000 to head Mattel as chairman and chief executive. “Had it not been for Northwestern, I wouldn’t have been hired at Kraft and, had it not been for my experience there, I would not have ended up at Mattel,” said Eckert, who retired in 2011 and joined private equity firm Friedman Fleischer & Lowe last year. “Attending Kellogg was one of the most significant decisions of my entire career.” When Eckert landed at Mattel, the company was in dire financial straits. The costly failure of a major acquisition — an educational software company — had the firm in the red. “Joining Mattel was a turnaround opportunity,” he said. “It was definitely a high-risk, high-return career move for me, especially since I didn’t know the toy industry.”

Why I give to Kellogg

ellogg transformed K me from a young hungry student into an accomplished business professional. The school shaped the trajectory of my life, and for that I support Kellogg the best I can with my time, talents and treasures.

—BOB ECKERT ’77

But Eckert knew the consumer goods business from his days at Kraft and he set out to refocus Mattel on its core products. Under his watch, the company outperformed its competition and generated more than $8.2 billion in cash flow. Eckert credits Kellogg with teaching him succinct communication skills. He employed one-word themes — from “Refocus” during his first year on the job to “Lead” — to motivate Mattel’s global workforce and shareholders. “Simplicity makes concepts more memorable,” he said.

FROM THE

ground up After a successful corporate career, Jeff Hoye ’95 acquired C&J Cladding, a small automated welding company

In 2006 Jeff Hoye resigned as president of Western Hemisphere operations for Corus America Inc. Corus Group PLC was one of the world’s largest integrated steel producers. Attractive job opportunities in Texas lured Jeff and his wife Carrie away from the Chicago suburbs to Houston. Upon arrival, though, Hoye had a problem: his new employer was being sold, and Jeff was jobless. Hoye saw three options: move back to Chicago and continue a corporate career, go into consulting or buy a business. He chose the latter and, in March 2007, he and a partner became co-owners of C&J Cladding, a specialty welding company serving the oil and gas industries. The two entrepreneurs grew the mom-andpop business from 12 employees to 50 and tripled production capacity. In eight years, C&J’s revenue grew from $5 million to $20 million, with strong margins. “My partner and I designed and built the organization to grow the company and sell it. We focused on fundamentals of quality and technical partnership with our clients, and hired employees with an orientation toward teamwork and a good work ethic. Growing the business was hard work, but a lot of fun.”

Why I give to Kellogg

ellogg gave me the tools K and confidence I needed to assess the risk/reward of acquiring and running my own business — and succeed. My Kellogg education led to a gamechanging experience for Carrie and me. Now we want to help future entrepreneurs succeed. — JEFF HOYE ’95 WITH WIFE CARRIE

Last October, the privately held Ellwood Group Inc., a steelmaker and forging company, acquired Hoye’s company. Staying on as commercial director, Hoye is ensuring a smooth integration of the two entities. The career transition has allowed Jeff and Carrie to focus more on community service, supporting agencies that transform lives, particularly for the impoverished. The couple serves on several boards and their giving focuses on the transformational impact of education. “There are so many deserving organizations. By focusing our giving on education, we feel we are making the greatest impact.”

ALWAYS IMPROVING,

always leading

As he prepares to retire from Boeing in 2016 after a successful decade at the helm, Chairman Jim McNerney reflects on a lifetime of leadership lessons

THE YEAR IN REVIEW

Jim McNerney always gravitated toward big jobs in top American companies facing the challenge of increasing global competition. Similarly, his contributions to Kellogg “support its ongoing efforts to adapt and improve in a more competitive educational environment and to continue producing better, more capable leaders to ensure our country’s long-term success.” McNerney’s career spanned time with Proctor and Gamble and McKinsey & Company, nearly two decades in senior leadership roles at the General Electric Company, the top job at 3M, and most recently, a decade-long run as chairman, president and CEO of The Boeing Company.

Why I give to Kellogg

I believe that supporting Kellogg, as it adapts to the profound global changes in both education and business, is important. —JIM McNERNEY

When he joined Boeing in 2005, the company was struggling to find its way forward after a series of mergers and acquisitions, some high-profile ethics missteps and some tough business challenges. His job was to build on the strength that already existed at Boeing. Now that he’s stepped down from his roles as Boeing president and CEO, he has had time to reflect. “In the past decade, we defined, built and nurtured a culture that emphasizes both individual accountability for getting one’s job done and a shared responsibility for the company’s overall success,” he said. “The credit goes to Boeing employees and all they have accomplished by embracing this culture every day.” Years of experience allowed McNerney to mature as a leader. His advice for Kellogg graduates is simple: Always keep improving. “Leaders today must be able to acclimate to a consistently fast pace, sharpen their intellectual curiosity and analytical capability, strengthen communications and leadership skills and learn to run toward problems, not away from them,” he said.
