It also means a person who can think out of the box, create an unusual solution, and can be strongly motivated by an exceedingly odd and powerful curiosity that is related to an exploratory behavior.” Selected Works of Chia Yi [Kelly] Chen, MFA, 2017–2020

Good design is always extraordinary. A good designer must know how to think out of the box. For me, designing is about solving problems, and I like to explore more different solutions. How to combine the concept of rationality with the perceptual look and feel is what I study on the road of design.

Approach The main source of research material is my own environment or habitat. I mentally and physically recorded things that I saw, heard, touched, and smelled as I went about my daily routines. These recordings then fueled my writing and designing a 32page book—similar to a journal but with more depth. The look and feel reflected a central theme or concept that I developed on my daily observations. It has many subtexts and side subjects, but there is a solid overarching concept that I convey to the reader.

Objective I often feel some gloomy darkness in my heart, but this journal is a record of how I cope with it.

Approach I chose impulse buying as a problem that I want to solve with a graphic design solution. After a lot of research, I came up with a solution: creating a “cooling system.” I developed a system for people to reconsider their order in a different mood. This system will automatically hold the order you place and ask again after a day to make sure uses need those things instead of shopping emotionally. This project investigates how research and audience understanding create successful interactive projects that enhance users’ experience with a brand.

Objective Impulse buying can cause a lot of money, people spending money on the things they don't even need. FreezR is an app that helps impulse buyer establish a healthy shopping behavior.

Objective San Francisco has well-known bad traffic, including vehicles and public transportation. The reason why the traffic in SF is so terrible is myriad. Taking public transportation can help alleviate the problem, but unfortunately people prefer to drive on their own for many reasons. This MFA thesis aims to understand this phenomenon's context and further develop a solution using graphic design.

Approach According to my research, there are many reasons people would rather drive their own car instead of taking public transportation, such as the complex transportation payment system, inadequate customer ser vice support, the inconvenient deposit system. As a graphic designer, I want to start with the transportation payment system as a solution to the problem. I develop a more convenient and sophisticated payment system. Moti is a brand that improves people’s commuting experience in the San Francisco Bay Area. The main goal is to encourage people to take public transportation and reduce car usage to prevent congestion. It provides opportunities for an easy and united way to use transit, which aims to encourage people to take public transportation and further eliminate cars on the road to prevent congestion. I choose a bold, saturated color as the core colors to let people have a more vivid memory of the brand.

Background

San Francisco has well-known bad traffic, including vehicles and public transportation. The reason why the traffic in San Francisco is so terrible is myriad. Taking public transportation can help alleviate the problem, but unfortunately people prefer to drive on their own for many reasons. As a student, my main way of commuting is by bus. Commuting is an indispensable part of my daily life, but I have thus found many inconveniences in the public transportation system. For instance, the complex transportation payment system, inadequate customer service support, the inconvenient deposit system. And then I thought if public transportation became more convenient and more intuitive, wouldn't that encourage people to use public transportation instead of driving? This idea eventually inspired this thesis project.

Engage Moti uses a bold, vivid, popping visual system to catch people's eyes. The key element, the circle, represents the concept of the whole, one-stop service. It also represents the intuitive and smooth user experience Moti will provide. Through promotion, the use group will be further expanded and public transportation will become the first choice for commuting.
