Framing Problems How can we begin to understand the interconnectivity or marine defaunation if we don’t understand the connections between animals? What effect do our human actions have on the ocean and everything that lives beneath the surface?
Understanding the connections between marine animals
Opportunities Encouraging social learning through wonder & curiosity
Connecting exhibits for a cohesive experience
Our Solution Exploring the flora and fauna of the ocean through the eyes of a sea creature to learn about the interconnectivity of the California coastline environment. Timeline (log scale) of marine and terrestrial defaunation. If left unmanaged, the authors predict that marine habitat alteration, along with climate change (colored bar: IPCC warming), will exacerbate marine defaunation.

Allison, 9 Visits to Aquarium: Once every 2 years Reason for visit: School Summary: Allison visits the Aquarium with her school for a field trip. She doesn’t know much about Marine life and doesn’t have any big expectations. She is excited about seeing the seals and jellyfish. Allison has grown up in the Long Beach area. Goal: Allison’s teacher wants her to have a basic understanding ofmarine life in California. Our goal is to teach her about Marine Defaunationand give her a subtle and simple call-to-action.
Rob, 45 Visits to Aquarium: Once a month Reason for visit: Leisure and Learning Summary: Rob has studied marine biology and visits the aquarium often. He is interested in the changing exhibits. Rob goes there to get a close look at the marine life he loves and hopefully to come upon accurate and interesting information on these ecosystems. Goal: Rob wants a new experience every time he comes to the aquarium, and needs a reason to continue his membership and keep coming back (especially as an expert in the field).
Daniel, 25 Visits to Aquarium: Once every 2 years Reason for visit: Kids Summary: Daniel has two children and likes to take them to museums, zoos, and aquariums for learning opportunities. He wants to teach them about the marine life near home and loves to learn new things himself. He’s hoping to keep the kids busy and to keep himself entertained. Goal: Daniel wants his kids to learn about marine life, learn more about the ocean, have a fun-filled day of activities, and get a souvenir for the kids to remember their trip.

Content Models Using research from the Aquarium of the Pacific, we created a diagram specific to the animal avatars we chose. Each diagram shows how that animal is connected to everything in its own ecosystem. This helped us to define the flow and interactions in the interface —  every choice the user makes leads them to discover more and more connections.

Take Aways At the end of their journey, each participant gets to keep their avatar lanyard (or, of course, they can return and recycle). They also get a diagram specific to their journey throughout the aquarium, which shows the connections between their animal avatar and the things they learned about.
Kiosk Locations Each of these locations has an iPad stand which continutes the journey for each participant. Each iPad has information specific to the exhibit it’s sitting in front of and how your animal avatar relates to it.

The Interface The interface is always moving with minimal text — our goal here was to always keep our participant engaged. We also wanted to make sure we prompted them to look at the exhibits as well, which we achieved with voice narration.
