P
erson High School volleyball coach Hope Heverly relies on a core group of seniors that couldn’t be any more different. There’s an energetic hitter with an explosive serve that can do a little bit of everything — well. There’s a player playfully described by her teammates as ‘extremely sarcastic’ with a nasty cross court spike. There’s a quiet, outside hitter that seems to come up with a key block or spike just when it’s needed. There’s a self-professed goofball that patrols the middle who keeps everyone loose in the most stressful situations. There’s a motherly figure who takes charge on the court and serves the dual role of outside hitter and team psychologist.
‘It’s great having six seniors on the team because it brings such great leadership. We have lots of younger girls on the team and that brings stability on the court.’ Hope Heverly Person High School volleyball coach And there’s the intense one, who is the coach on the floor and gets the set in winning time. These six seniors, Liana Solomon, Callie Tuck, Paige Oakley, Jessica Goodwin and Karlie Long, and Taylor Cothran will play their final regular season game in Rocket Gym Monday when they host East Chapel Hill in a key PAC-6 match. “Each girl brings their own attri-
butes to the team which makes our team unique,” Heverly said. “It’s great having six seniors on the team because it brings such great leadership. We have a lot of younger girls on this team and that brings a lot of stability on the court.” The core group has seen plenty of success as a team, including a dominating sweep of reigning PAC-6 champion Riverside last week in front of a raucous home crowd. “We have the best fans in the world,” Goodwin said. “[In Tuesday’s match against Jordan] we were in the huddle and Coach was screaming and we still couldn’t hear her. When you look up and see the fans screaming and stomping on the bleachers, you can’t help but get excited.” The seniors will be honored before Monday’s game. The JV’s will play at 5 p.m., with the varsity matchup scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start. The Rockets will need to win this match to lockup a second-place tie with Riverside in the PAC-6 standings.
Liana Solomon “She brings a lot of energy. She’s a fighter and she always wants to win.” Karlie Long “She’s good at everything. She can draw, she can play the piano, she can sing, she’s smart, she can do everything.” Paige Oakley
