HOSPITALITY

HOMEBREW HOTEL O4 YEAR FALL 2017

The Homebrew Hotel is located in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee at the intersection of Parkway and Pine Mountain Road. Pigeon Forge has a strong history of distilling moonshine, with multiple distilleries still located there today. In the 1830’s the Old Mill was built to stone grind corn, wheat and rye. In 2014, the Old Forge Distillery was built a hundred yards from the Old Mill using the grain from the Old Mill to make moonshine. This project is inspired by the distilling process of moonshine and the environment in which the site is located, connecting the interior and exterior. Moonshine is created by heating a mash mixture of corn, water, yeast and sugar to 173 degrees, it is then turned into an alcohol steam and is past from large copper stills through small copper piping to cooler water where it is then condensed back into a liquid. The liquid is then filtered through charcoal and then dispensed into a jug. The moonshine is then put into mason jars for packing. This process is used within this hotel by creating large open main spaces, mimicking the large stills and using long hallways or tunneling spaces for the connecting spaces, to simulate the copper piping between stills. The materials, ingredients and the history of moonshine are all the factors that influenced each part of this hotel. The materials chosen for the hotel are local to Pigeon Forge. The furniture used throughout the project was chosen due to the round shape to reinforce the concept and bring more of the shape of the stills and pipes into the space.

3form Varia Ecoresin Naturals Field is used to create the walls within the entry circle of both the standard and the suite rooms. This material was chosen because of it’s ability to be formed to any design as well as its translucent nature. The choice of pattern within the polyethylene was selected to comply and translate the concept up into the room design.

HEART OF MIDTOWN INTERNSHIP SUMMER 2017 GENSLER, ATLANTA

Experience transformation in the heart of Midtown through a glimpse of the three part project that was given to the interns at Gensler, in the Atlanta, Georgia office, during the summer of 2017. The project was to develop design proposals for refreshing and activating storefronts in Midtown, and implement them into a mixed use development proposal for the AT&T campus. The first part of the project was to redesign the Midtown storefront guidelines. The challenges faced in this stage of the project was to create strict enough guidelines that unified Midtown, while allowing each brand to express themselves. The second part was to use two retailers in Midtown as examples of how the new guidelines could be used to unify Midtown. The two retailers were ACE Hardware and SAVI. They both had storefront properties that were not used to the fullest advantage. Our challenge during this phase was to incorporate the owner’s wishes while adhering to the new guidelines we redesigned to achieve the best overall storefronts for the company’s and Midtown’s brand. The third part was to develop a mixed use proposal for the AT&T campus. The current site is in close proximity to public transit, however there is low foot traffic due to the elevated plaza. Our intent was to unify the local community by offering a welcoming retail experience. Developing a strong sense of brand, offering ample retail space and bringing green spaces back into the city were our main goals for this phase.

PLAYING WITH THE SENSES 03 YEAR SPRING 2017

This project began by a two week charratte sponsored by Crossville Tile to design a tile system based on self given criteria. The concept was how light interacts with depth and perception. The tile system is designed as a kit of parts that contain the same modular repeated by stacking and shifting. The kit consists of a metal frame that a reflective tile slides into on four sides of the octagon shape. A glass colored tile is then inserted into the center of the shape. When light interacts with the system, light bounces around the interior within the reflective tile and emits the light as the color of the glass tile insert. This project is located in the storefront retail space in Evolve apartments on Cumberland Avenue in Knoxville, Tennessee. Cumberland Avenue is one of the most circulated streets in downtown Knoxville. The site is located on a extremely populated street by not only people but restaurants, hospitals and businesses. After studying the site and discovering the diverse sensory simulating environment, I developed the interest in how different stimuli effect the human experience. Sensory Processing Disorders, or SPD, are extremely common in children. SPD is the inability to react to certain stimuli or being too overly stimulated. SPD often accompanies Autism, ADHD, ADD and OCD. There are less then five Sensory Processing Disorder Centers in the United States and none being close to Tennessee. Designing a center for children with Sensory Processing Disorders requires spaces that stimulate their senses to feel a particular way. This design allows a child to be stimulated by color and light. Each space within the design uses a designated color to stimulate a child to feel a certain way to provoke a certain activity within each location.

32

RENDERED SECTION PERSPECTIVE TILE SYSTEM CONSTRUCTION

The tile system is a kit of parts created with aluminum and tile. The tiles have grooves cut into the sides to easily slide into the metal frame. The center tile slides into the grooves cut into the two tiles across from each other. They are then stacked on top of each other and staggered.

FRAMED MICRO-CLIMATES 03 YEAR FALL 2016

This project began by research on the Viperfish, a bioluminescent organism. The two main things I extracted from my research were the layers of the fish’s skin and the layers of the bioluminescent organ. The Viperfish’s skin consists of two layers, the first being the scales and the second is a translucent coating over them. The bioluminescent organ, a photocyte, consist of four layers and is used to attract prey. I began the design process by taking the shape of the bioluminescent organ then abstracting and extruding it. I then studied the thickness of material and how light can penetrate material based on varying depths. I continued the iterations by adding a variation in height to the extrusions to create more depth and add a topography to the surface. This became the design for the herbarium. After studying the site, The Whitney Museum in New York, I realized how the Whitney could interact with the High Line and it’s surroundings. I researched the plants and trees growing on the High Line and incorporated them within the herbarium. The herbarium consists of pod-like micro-climates concentrated towards the top to be in the sunlight. The pods toward the bottom contain a seed library to the plants growing above. A ramp goes through the middle of the two layers of the system to allow user interaction with the both the top and the bottom. The herbarium system is the main focal point within this design, which determined the rest of the program within the space. The spaces closer to the herbarium became the public zones and the areas furthest away became the private zones.

RESIDENTIAL

KERAMIKOS 02 YEAR SPRING 2016

The concept behind this project was to design a three-story plus mezzanine live-work space devoted to a given crafts person and their apprentice. My client was a ceramicist who wanted to create volumes that are not large in scale but feel monumental and significant, while being simplistic. This porous wall was inspired by the pure form of the ceramic work, as well as my client’s interest in simplicity and minimalism. The system was designed for a multiuse. It allows for the display of the client’s pieces, offers shelving for supplies while working, and allows slight visibility to what lies behind to draw in walk-in customers. The first floor is a multi-function space combining a gallery and a workspace. In the storefront are glass shelves filled with the client’s work. Just beyond is the porous wall that allows for more display space and contains the workspace. Through the back door connects to the apprentice’s living quarters. The second floor is a secondary work space to allow my client to sketch ideas. It also serves as a public living space. At the front of the second floor is a frosted glass floor that allows slight visibility from the gallery space below and allow light in from the storefront. The third floor is a private living space that has a balcony at the same location of the glass floor to allow the client to see if someone walks. The mezzanine level was designed for the client’s kids.

SEEKING TRANSFORMATION 04 YEAR FALL 2017

The concept behind this project was to write a poem from words or phrases found in Vogue magazine. From the poem I abstracted a few key words to focus on which were Impressionist and Sicilian instruments. I then transformed the text into image.

Expression of Noise

62

Taken from Ballet by Leonid Afremov

Seeking a transformation to mark the new beginning of a new chapter (728). Glamorous figures of fascination(250) pass by while I’m enduring the mass of people that swarm around me. Experience changes all of us(250), nervously chewing her nails(458). I remember vividly(250) the joyous and beautifully real(302) people who possessed a certain radiance(312). Draped in floor-length evening dresses(404) made of Impressionist tulle over silk printed with watercolors of local flora(414). Tenderness and timeless(320). Guest were serenaded by musicians playing ancient Sicilian instruments(414). There was an unmistakable charge in the air(462). The atmosphere(288): Magnificent(334); Iconic(340); Ageless(340). As the morning sun filtered into the space(462). Misty eyed nostalgia(232). The art of seeing and reseeing(624). The mythic woman rendered in images(307), the beauty of ruin and organic texture(320). He would literally erase your face(458). Bluring the boundaries(624), portray an emblem of victory(308); a defiant stance(308) and attitude(308). Be a strong voice(619). Rooted in memory(380). Life only goes in one direction – forward(232). [kr]
