GETTING ENOUGH EXERCISE? Federal physical activity guidelines recommend that adults get at least 150 minutes of moderate or 75 minutes of vigorous exercise each week, in addition to muscle-strengthening activities at least twice a week. But according to the new NCHS report, which drew on five years of data from the National Health Interview Survey, only about 23% of adults ages 18 to 64 are hitting both of those marks. Another 32% met one but not both, and almost 45% did not hit either benchmark. Those numbers fluctuated somewhat depending on gender, occupation and home state. More men (roughly 27%) than women (almost 19%) met both guidelines, and both genders saw slightly higher percentages among working adults (almost 29% and 21%, respectively). The authors also added that people working in managerial or “professional” positions were more likely than individuals in production roles, such as assembly and manufacturing, to meet the standards. However, the report looked only at leisure-time physical activity, so adults who log exercise through active jobs or commutes were not included in the findings.

7 BENEFITS TO EXERCISING DAILY 1. Exercise controls weight Exercise can help prevent excess weight gain or help maintain weight loss. When you engage in physical activity, you burn calories. The more intense the activity, the more calories you burn.

2. Exercise combats health conditions and diseases Regular exercise helps prevent or manage a wide range of health problems and concerns, including stroke, metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes, depression, a number of types of cancer, arthritis and falls.

3. Exercise improves mood Need an emotional lift? Or need to blow off some steam after a stressful day? A gym session or brisk 30-minute walk can help. Physical activity stimulates various brain chemicals that may leave you feeling happier and more relaxed.

4. Exercise boosts energy Regular physical activity can improve your muscle strength and boost your endurance.

5. Exercise promotes better sleep Regular physical activity can help you fall asleep faster and deepen your sleep. Just don’t exercise too close to bedtime, or you may be too energized to hit the hay.

6. Exercise puts the spark back into your sex life Regular physical activity can improve energy levels and physical appearance, which may boost your sex life. But there’s even more to it than that. Regular physical activity may enhance arousal for women. And men who exercise regularly are less likely to have problems with erectile dysfunction than are men who don’t exercise.

7. Exercise can be fun... and social! Exercise and physical activity can be enjoyable. It gives you a chance to unwind, enjoy the outdoors or simply engage in activities that make you happy. Physical activity can also help you connect with family or friends in a fun social setting. HELLO! Spring 2019

DECORATE YOUR LIVING ROOM 1 4 3 2 5 1. REFRESH BOOKCASES, ADDING SEASONAL COLOR.

Redecorating bookcases or bookshelves is not something I do every season, but it can be the easiest way to refresh the look of a space.

2. BRING IN PLANTS.

I love using unexpected containers, like white round bowls, for potted plants. Potted succulents and greens bring spring to your space all season long!

3. CHANGE OUT YOUR WINTER PILLOWS FOR SOFT PASTELS.

Trading out some winter whites and holiday reds for some pops of baby blue, soft pink and a single bright yellow pillow was just enough change to satisfy a spring look.

2. THE CENTER PIECE

.

Open up your curtains so light goes into your dining room. Another way to bring more light is having some bigger mirrors hung so light can bounce off and bring in more light. When making homemade spring centerpieces, you can use something you already have around the house as your vase: a glass or ceramic pitcher, an old enamel coffee pot, tin watering can, etc. Choosing an item you have in your home will give your centerpiece a personal touch. To give the room a more nature like feel, use fresh flowers either from your garden or at a local flower shop. Use candles of different sizes to give vaiety in heights to your center piece.

The colors can very. In our example above, the color scheme is very warm with pops of vibrant colors. Adding a pop of red, yellow, and pink can give your dining room apring feel in an instant.

4. WALL DECOR

Decor on your walls can be simple or spontanious. Try a mirror or some wall art using similar color choices from your center piece.

5. LARGE PLANTS OR SMALL TREES

Something that can bring more life and color to your dining room can be a large potted plant or a small tree in a corner of your dning room. It makes your room feel

WINDOW GARDEN Lettuce Home-grown lettuce is far superior—in both taste and vitamin A content—to the store-bought alternative! Lettuce is cool-season crop that grows well in the spring and fall in most regions. Lettuce seedlings will even tolerate a light frost. Temperatures between 45°F and 65°F are ideal. Because lettuce grows quickly, the best approach is to plant a small amount at a time, staggering your plantings.

Strawberries

Growing strawberries indoors may be an easier option for some people. Indoors allows you to control such factors as light and temperature. The best way to start is in containers which hang from the ceiling. Be sure not to over crowd the plants if planting in a planting pot. Strawberries need at least six hours of sun per day, which can be provided by sun exposure or by using indoor plant lighting. Water strawberry plants daily to keep the soil moist.

Herbs Just about every dish tastes better with fresh herbs -- and there’s no better way to get fresh herbs than to grow them yourself in an herb garden. From classic herb favorites such as basil, rosemary, mint, and thyme to lesser-known herb varieties.

______________________________________________________________________ PREPARATION Step 1

In a medium bowl, combine all of the ingredients except the lettuce and toss together. Taste and adjust seasoning.

Step 2

Warm a large flour tortilla for about 10 seconds in the microwave or over a burner, just until flexible. Lay it on your work surface and cover with lettuce leaves, leaving a two-inch border all the way around. Place half the chicken mixture over the lettuce in a strip on the bottom half of the tortilla. Spoon some of the juices from the bottom of the bowl over the lettuce.

Step 3

Fold the bottom edge of the tortilla over the filling. Fold in the sides, then roll up, squeezing the tortilla so that the roll is compact. Place the roll on a piece of plastic wrap. Fold in the sides of the plastic over the ends of the wrap, and roll up tightly to secure. Repeat with the remaining tortilla, lettuce and filling. Refrigerate for at least five minutes and for as long as 24 hours.

Concrete landscaping stones and metal firepit ring Masonry adhesive Rubber mallet

1. OUTLINE YOUR FIRE PIT

3. FILL YOUR FIRE PIT

______________________________________________________________________ Lay out the bottom ring of your stones in the grass where you want the fire pit to be. If you are going to use a metal ring you can use that to build a few stones around to find your circle. Remove a few stones so you have space between them, and then spray paint to mark where the outside of the stones would hit. Remove those remaining stones and complete your painted circle.

2. DIG YOUR FIRE PIT

Use your digging tool to dig out your circle 6 deep. Depending on where you live, this will be an easier or more difficult task.

Once you have a 6 hole dug, youll want to pour your gravel into your hole until the gravel is level with the ground. The gravel will give your fire pit an important drainage are when it rains.

4. BUILD YOUR FIRE PIT

Place your first ring of stones around the edge of the gravel circle and use the rubber mallet to tap the stones flat and even with each other. If using a metal ring you can keep that in the middle to make sure you are fitting your stones right up against the ring. When placing the second row of stones, place some masonry adhesive on the bottom of each stone and stagger the placement of the second row. Use the rubber mallet to even and tighten the stone placement. HELLO! Spring 2019

MAKING A PYRAMID GARDEN WOOD CUTS:

Cut down some planks that are 9 cm wide and 1.9 cm thick to 1.9 meters long for the base tier so that the tier inside the slip joints is a 1.8 mtr X 1.8 mtr square.

1: START ASSEMBLING

The corner slip joints for the first (base) tier are positioned 5 cm from the end of each plank and this measurement is used for the corners of all of the tiers. The slots for the tier above have been set at 20 cm in from the slots from the tier below, and again this measurement has been used throughout the construction of this planter. Only the slip joint slots at the corners of the lower tier need to be half the plank’s width in depth, this is to allow all four sides to sit firmly on the ground. All of the remaining slots used in this planter have been set at a depth of 1/3rd of the planks width. Note that that the 1/2 depth slot is 5 cm from the end of the plank, and the 1/3 depth slot for the second tier is 20 cm in from the inside edge the first slot: It is important to remember that on all the slip joints you are working inwards so that you keep the dimensions and the slots in the correct place.

Spring 2019 HELLO!

Thorax Fluffy

Thorax Shiny and Smooth

Wasps and honey bees can be mistaken for one another because both insects are capable of giving painful stings. While honey bees can attack when provoked, wasps are naturally and more aggressive predators. Identifying the difference between honey bees and wasps is important in order to administer proper treatment of wounds and appropriate pest control. Wasps and honey bees are both members of the Hymenoptera order of insects. However, their physical bodies are different. Honey bees measure around 2.54 cm long. Some have entirely black bodies, while others are black or brown with orange or yellow striations. Honey bees are hairy, while wasps usually have smooth and shiny skin. Wasps are narrowwaisted, have four wings and may be brightly colored, with black and yellow patterns. Wasps and bees also differ in lifestyle and habits. Honey bee colonies can have populations over 75,000, while wasps’ colonies tend to have fewer than 10,000 individuals. Queen wasps build a nest for their colony, while worker honey bees create and maintain hives. Unlike most wasps that hibernate during the winter season and build a new nest the following autumn, honey bees do not hibernate, as they live on food reserves and heat accumulated by thousands of workers. Wasp species cannot produce honey, but all species of honey bees are capable of producing and storing sizeable amounts of honey within their hives. While honey bees can sting only once and die after attacking, a single wasp is capable of stinging multiple times. A honey bee is able to sting a person or predator using its stinger. Honey bee stings

are quite painful and even life threatening to a small percentage of people who are allergic to the venom. Honey bees usually sting as a form of defense of themselves or their colony. The stinger is barbed and located at the end the abdomen. It is tied to the digestive tract of the bee as is the venom sac that produces the venom. When a honey bee stings, its stinger, the venom sac and other parts of the honey bee’s body are pulled out and left behind, killing the bee. Although the bee dies, its sting takes effect quickly, and, if the stinger is not removed quickly, the symptoms gradually increase as the venom sac continues to pump venom into the wound. Since the stinger is barbed, it often becomes lodged in the tissue of the animal. When a honey bee stings, it releases an alarm pheromone to alert the other workers in the colony. The result is other bees are recruited to the area to defend the colony as well. Wasp stings are common, especially during the warmer months when people are outside for longer periods of time. Wasp stings can be uncomfortable, but most people recover quickly and without complications. Wasps, like bees and hornets, are equipped with a stinger as a means of self-defense. A wasp’s stinger contains venom (a poisonous substance) that’s transmitted to humans during a sting. While a bee can only sting once because its stinger becomes stuck in the skin of its victim, a wasp can sting more than once during an attack. Wasp stingers remain intact. However, even without a lodged stinger, wasp venom can cause significant pain and irritation.

PICNIC SPECIAL EQUIPMENT ACTIVITIES FOOD

PICNIC SPECIAL

BRING THE RIGHT EQUIPMENT

1. A PICNIC BASKET

If your picnic food isn’t perishable, and you will be driving your car close to the picnic location, a traditional picnic hamper will be charming. If you plan to hike deep into the woods, a backpack style picnic carrier may be more appropriate. And if you’re bringing along a lot of food and beverages that should remain cold until served, a cooler may be best suited for your needs.

2. A PICNIC BLANKET

Unless you’re planning your picnic in a location that has picnic tables waiting for you, you’ll want to bring along a blanket to sit on and to spread out the contents of your picnic basket.

3. PLATES, CUPS, UTENSILS, & NAPKINS Depending on the occasion and location of your picnic, your place settings could be as casual as disposable plates, cups, utensils, and paper napkins, or you could bring along your best china, crystal, silver, and table linens.

32

Spring 2019 HELLO!

4. CORKSCREW OR BOTTLE OPENER

If your picnic includes a bottle of wine, imported sparkling water, or any other beverage that requires more than your bare hands to open, remember to pack the appropriate gadget for opening them.

5. ICE PACKS OR THERMOS

Remember to keep your food safe by packing ingredients with enough ice to keep it chilled until served. Likewise, if you bring hot food to your picnic, use a thermos to keep it at a safe temperature.

6. TRASH BAGS

You enjoy the outdoors, but leaving your trash behind is a bad idea. However, in addition to the bags, you’ll bring for your trash, you may also want to pack a few plastic bags to bring home the dirty dishes and glasses to keep your lovely picnic basket from getting soiled.

PICNIC SPECIAL

FUN ACTIVITIES

1. KITES

Kite flying is an outdoor activity framed by the great expanse of sky and attuned to the nuances of wind. A large body of research now attests to the mind/body benefits of spending time in nature. While much study has focused on green space, researchers (link is external) have also begun to look at the restorative power of blue space in the form of water.

2. MONOPOLY

A game dating back to 1903, Monopoly is a family multi-player classic, with a board, set pieces, two stacks of cards, and a bank of cash (the famous “Monopoly money”). Play is advanced by the throw of dice and the game is known to last for hours.

3. COLORING BOOKS AND COLORS

There are benefits to coloring. Your brain experiences relief by entering a meditative state. Stress and anxiety levels have the potential to be lowered. Negative thoughts are expelled as you take in positivity. Focusing on the present helps you achieve mindfulness. Unplugging from technology promotes creation over consumption. Coloring can be done by anyone, not just artists or creative types. It’s a hobby that can be taken with you wherever you go.

4. NATURE WALKS

Taking group nature walks is associated with a whole host of mental health benefits, including decreased depression, improved well-being and mental health, and lower perceived stress.
