Hussar 4-H Beef Club Show and Sale
Tuesday, May 31st, 2022 Hussar Arena, Hussar, AB Show Time- 2:00 pm
Sale Time 6:00 pm
Concession will be open from 1-7:30pm Welcome back! Here is a recap of what we have been up to for the last couple of years since we were unable to host a traditional show and sale due to the pandemic. In 2020, we finished our 4-H year online and sold our steers privately. In 2021, we had a combination of online and in-person activities; and held our sale online via Rosehill Auctions. These were challenging years for our club, but we are absolutely THRILLED to be back in person this year for a live show and sale; and hope you will join us! This year has not been without challenges due to the substantial increase in feed costs for our members to have their steers fed and finished, BUT they will be ready for you on May 31! For 62 years, Hussar 4-H Club has taken pride in the members that have built their skills as cattlemen and women, community leaders, public speakers and volunteers. In that time, our club has continually grown and evolved....and this year we are doing just that again! Here are some exciting things about our show this year: 1. 2.
3.
We are starting the first class to show in the ring at 2:00 pm sharp IMMEDIATELY following the Grand Champion “Slap”, the ring will empty, with the sale to Start at 6:00pm. Final championship class to sell first and random pre-drawn sale order to follow
On Offer: 19 Steers 1 Fundraiser Steer
Buyback and rail price will be available on sale day. Hooks are available for all sale steers.
We hope this format suits you as buyers and welcome you to come see some of the show, meet the kids, and enjoy our hospitality. We appreciate your support and encourage splitting calf purchases between businesses or whatever makes it work for you. Your advertising dollars are well spent at the Hussar 4H Show and Sale, and we will make sure they go as far as possible. Your name as a buyer will be used throughout Strathmore, Drumheller, Brooks and Bassano newspapers, during the sale, online and on air. Make sure to stop by and ask any of our members about their projects, they’ll be happy to answer questions. See you on the 31st! If you have any questions leading up to sale day, please contact:

Meet our members…
Hayes Armstrong
Hello, my name is Hayes Armstrong, and this is my 5th year in the Hussar Beef Club. My calf’s name is Mac, and he is a Red Angus/Hereford cross. Mac has been a big calf from birth. However, he doesn’t act his weight like some steers who really like to throw their weight around. Instead, Mac is more of a timid teddy bear that just likes to have some fun. When we were halter breaking him, he kept “cuddling” by rubbing me up against the post, all in good nature of course. Hopefully when time comes to leading him in the show ring we got all the cuddles out and he doesn’t find a special corner! A special thanks goes out to my last year's buyer, Trochu Motors, and hopefully I can see all of you in person at the show and sale this year!

Will Armstrong
Hi, my name is William Armstrong but I like being called Will or Wilber. This is my 3rd year in 4-H and my first year in intermediate. My Red Angus/Hereford cross is named Stew. Stew is a home-grown steer that loves to be combed on the front right shoulder. Stew is a little stubborn to move around but overall, he is a good steer. I love 4-H because I love animals and 4-H is a great way to spend time with them and to get to know their personalities. Stew is a nice calf to have because he is not a kicker, he is not a bucker, and he is not a timid calf. I would like to thank Lance Farwell for buying my calf last year and I’m excited to see all of you in person at the show and sale.

Brody Hale
Hi, I am Brody Hale from Dorothy Alberta, I am 15 years old and attend grade 10 at Wheatland Crossing School. This year is my 7th year in Hussar 4-H club and I am a senior member. I chose a homegrown Black Angus calf this year because I like the bull he was sired from. I named my calf Chips and at weigh in he was 752lbs. Chips is always first to the feed trough and loves his grain. Chips has been a bit of a handful to work with and likes to be a challenge but we are getting things sorted out. Besides 4H my other interests are hockey, rodeo and ranching. I would like to thank Lochie Mckinnon at Bow Slope Shipping for purchasing my calf last year.

Hi My name is Jayna Hale and I am in Grade 11 at Wheatland Crossing School This is my 8th year in 4H and I am a senior in the Hussar 4H Club. This year I chose a homegrown Black Angus calf and I call him Leo. In November at weigh in Leo hit the scales weighing 624 lbs, which I am sure he will double by sale dayhe loves his grain! Leo was a bit of a handful at first but he is slowly realizing getting brushed and petted is a good thing. Aside from 4H I keep myself quite busy travelling across Alberta as a professional trick rider and also playing ringette in the winter. I am grateful to 4H for the many great experiences and opportunities it has provided me over the last 8 years. Belva Kaiser
My name is Belva Kaiser, and this is my first year in the Hussar 4-H Beef Club. This year I named my calf Jim. Jim calf is a Black Angus/Simmental cross and weighed in at 712lbs in November. Some of his favorite things include fresh bedding, bananas, feed in general and getting out. His least favorite things are probably cats and his halter. He's a bit hesitant to let me put it on but when it comes to being led around he does a good job. 4-H has brought me many opportunities such as improving on public speaking, meeting new people and expanding my knowledge on the cattle industry. Some of the things I enjoy outside of 4-H include volleyball, badminton and hunting. I am very grateful for the leaders, volunteers and donors within the 4-H community that help to make this experience possible.

Landon Schelske
Hello, my name is Landon Schelske and this is my 8 th year in the Hussar 4-H Multi Club. I am the club vice president this year. I am a grade 11 student attending Bassano School. My favorite part of 4-H is not only the skills you learn but also the day to day chores of raising a market beef project. I am also very active in the junior show circuit attending as many female shows available in a year and then adding them to my growing purebred herd. This year I am raising a Simmental steer named Larry and he weighed in at 716 lbs back in November. I selected him last fall and am enjoying watching him progress through the 4-H year. Other then 4-H, I enjoy are working on my junior show string, checking cattle, hunting, golfing and day to day chores around the ranch. I would like to extend a big thanks to S&H Insulation and Rob Sutherland for purchasing my steer last year. I look forward to our show and sale being in person and I hope you can join us..

He is a home-grown steer that likes being led around and I’m super excited to show him this year at our show and sale. Apart from showing my steers, I like to show my heifer projects at many junior shows in the summer. I also like to head down to the river every now and than and do some fishing. In the winter, I keep myself busy by going to the ski hill and having fun with friends. Huge thank you to Russ Muenchrath for buying my steer last year. I hope many of you can make it to our show and sale this year.

Marika Sevcik
Hello, my name is Marika Sevcik. I am an intermediate in the club and this is my third year in 4-H. I've had a lot of fun this year already. My favourite parts are working with my calf Cheerio, learning new things and getting to spend time outside. He basically acts like a puppy so I randomly named him Cheerio. Cheerio is a Clubby and his starting weight was 725 pounds. Aside from 4-H, I am very passionate about sports like softball, ringette, basketball or any other sports you can think of.

Marshall Sims
Hello, my name is Marshall Sims and this is my first year being a part of 4-H and I have enjoyed every moment of it! I am the treasurer for our club this year. When meeting my steer this year I quickly learned about the virtue of respect, and how little I had gained with him. He gave me a shot to my knee and due to his inability to put up with anything, I figured Sam Elliot would be a fitting name. Sam weighed in at 822 pounds at weigh in and is a homegrown steer. Since gaining his trust, Sam has led like a dream and I really look forward to showing him this year at our show and sale. Over the past few years I have really taken a liking to the country lifestyle. I really enjoy riding horses and showing cattle at junior shows. I also love to play the guitar and snowboard whenever I can. I really look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our show and sale this year!

Jason Slemko
My name is Jason Slemko, and this is my eighth year and final year of 4-H. I am the Wheatland District 4-H Junior Council President this year. I am currently attending Grade 12 at Wheatland Crossing School and I enjoy hanging out with friends and working on the farm, as well as playing multiple sports such as hockey, badminton, volleyball, and basketball. After I graduate, I am going to the University of Calgary for a Bachelor of Science in Astrophysics. This year, my calf is a Black Simmental named Po, who weighed 716 pounds at weigh-in. He is named Po because the markings on his face make him look like a panda. He loves being scratched, combed, and hanging out with his buddy, Bob. 4H has taught me how to care for and build a strong relationship with an animal, as well as valuable life skills like public speaking and record keeping. However, the most noteworthy thing 4-H has taught me is that no matter how difficult the task, with a lot of hard work and effort, anything is possible. I am excited to have a normal show and sale this year and I am looking forward to seeing all the steers and people. Huge thanks to Gregory Harriman and Associates for purchasing my steer last year!

Fundraiser Steer
Our fundraiser calf this year is being raised by Jacquelyn and Marli Sandum. He is a Simmental steer weighing in at 716 lbs. They have named him Harry and have enjoyed halter breaking him. In 2020 the funds were donated to Wheatland Hospice and this past year the fundraiser proceeds were donated to the Hussar Ag Society. This year, the club will be donating the proceeds from our fundraiser steer the family of Casey Collett. Casey is battling cancer and has been seeking treatment outside of Canada. We hope the funds raised can help with the enormous costs to the family. Kali Collett is a former member of the Hussar 4-H Horse Club. The fundraiser steer is always a great contributor to many worthy causes throughout the years and we are looking forward to continuing this legacy. Thank you to the Sandum Family for taking on the project this year.

Looking for another option? You can be a proud supporter of 4-H without having an actual calf to contend with. The rail price/buy back system is perfect for those buyers wishing to invest in our youth and their community if you are unable or choose not to have the steer processed! As a buyer on sale day, you could sell your calf back to a processing plant for “Rail Price”. That price will be available the day of the sale and is based on current market price. The price is based on the hot carcass hanging weight of the steer, also called the dress out percentage. Let’s break down it down using numbers on the previous page for comparison. SELL WEIGHT 1300 LBS
PRICE $ 4.00
CALF COST $ 5200.00
DRESS OUT WEIGHT 806 LBS
DRESS OUT % 62%
RAIL PRICE $ 2.50
CASH BACK $ 2015.00
ACTUAL COST TO YOU $ 3185.00
As you can see above, sponsoring 4-H in your community can happen! If you are interested in having it processed for yourself, please check out the breakdown on the previous page for some great information and to see just how much you could be saving over current grocery store prices, not to mention having a freezer full of the best beef available while supporting youth in agriculture and the community. We do have hooks available for all sale steers if you would like to utilize this option. As well you have the option of making your own arrangements if that suits you better. Please do not hesitate to talk to a member today for more information! Looking forward to having you join us for our show beginning at 2pm and our sale beginning at 6pm, Tuesday, May 31.
FAN FAVOuRITE
Try your hand at being a judge! We will be bringing it back again for you to decide who your favorite calf is. The Hussar Sales Association and the 4-H Club would like to extend an ENORMOUS thank you to Corey Sandum for her years of service. Corey was an integral part our organization for 14 years. She selflessly volunteered her time and talents to help members, leaders, parents, and buyers. Corey worked quietly behind the scenes while her 3 kids were members. She never sought acknowledgement or praise, but she certainly deserves both. The Hussar Show and Sale would not be what is today without her many years of work and dedication. We wish Corey all the best in her future endeavors.
