Katherine Cooper GM at Spenard Roadhouse

Spenard Roadhouse has had a busy summer and weekly sales are very close to those we saw in 2015. Food cost is still doing awesome + bar cost is expected to be within goal by the end of the year. Staff retention is high + we have seen a lot of in-house promotion throughout the past year.

We recently celebrated our first year of operations and we really enjoyed our temporary status as Best New Restaurant - voted by both PRESS and ADN readers! Sales have stabilized as the novelty of a new restaurant wears off, but we continue to expect a $6 million year. South enjoys very low staff turnover and we are working every day to identify challenges and find solutions. Currently we are very focused on labor and we are making good progress. We love our sister restaurants and always enjoy seeing your friendly faces at South, so don’t be a stranger!

Sacks is excited to announce the addition of Executive Chef Shana Whitlock! Shana comes to us as the former owner of Torchon Bistro. Shana has an extensive culinary background and strong leadership skills, we are excited to have her as part of the Sacks team. Sacks has experienced a number of wins in creating an new prep team and developing our new bar program. We are focusing on driving sales and re-introducing Sacks to our community.

What’s your favorite hobby? Running. Right now I’m training for my marathon, which is my first marathon ever so I’m super excited.

What’s your favorite hobby? I really like to cook. I’m creating my own recipe book right now so that’s in the works where I focus a lot on improving cooking If I fail once I’m just gonna keep going until I succeed. That’s something I do on the side. I do really like in the summer time I’m more active, so I like to go hiking and do that kind of stuff.

What’s an interesting fact about you? I lived in Germany for three years and that’s where I went to high school before I came over here to go to UAA for nursing. My parents are military. What’s your favorite part about working at Snow City Cafe? I love my coworkers, everyone is so cool and so nice to me. My manager Brett is amazing. He always gives me my time off when I need it. Everyone else is super understanding and know that everyone has birthdays and weddings and school to go to. It’s really nice that everyone understands that people have lives outside of work.

What’s an interesting fact about you? I like to work, work, work and enjoy what I’m doing, but then book a ticket and go somewhere and travel all I can because you never know what could happen and I don’t want to just be cooped up in one area all the time, so I do a lot of traveling. What’s your favorite part about working at Spenard Roadhouse? I used to eat here a bunch before I started working here. I used to work at Brewhouse and a lot of my friends came here and they just talked it up like it’s a great place to work. Which I didn’t doubt it all as my sister worked at Snow City. When I started working here it was different and it’s more family oriented. That was definitely something I was looking for. When I come to work I actually enjoy being with the people that I work with. They all have such different personalities, which can be really entertaining at times.

What’s your favorite hobby? Outdoor stuff. I like to play frolf and I also like to go camping, fishing, hunting and hiking. Going on a hunting trip here just next week for black tail deer. It’s in Kake, Alaska. I’m flying to Juneau and then you just take a quick plane from over there. There’s no natural predators, so all the deer over there are nice big deer and there’s nothing to thin out the population so there’s just more and more every year.

What’s your favorite hobby? Dancing. I have been dancing for over 25 years and I’m a teacher over at Alaska Dance Theater. Mostly ballet, I’ve also gotten into Afro-Brazilian and Cubanese as well and other workshops around the United States. I have actually done the Nutcracker a few times, I’ve danced with ballet school in San Francisco, I’ve danced with OBT Company up here, they’re from Oregon, they’re amazing. So I’ve been with a few different groups on the northwest coast.

What’s an interesting fact about you? I once proposed to Gwen Stefani. They had this contest up here and No Doubt was coming up for a concert and I like to think I’m king of eloquent with words. They had this radio contest where basically whoever wrote the best proposal would win free tickets to the concert. As part of that I also got to meet her in person and say my proposal to her. It was pretty sweet.

What’s an interesting fact about you? I like fires on the beach by myself. I don’t invite anybody else. I just go out on the beach and burn some wood by myself. Solo camp trips.

What’s your favorite part about working at South? I love that it’s part of a greater family. Laile’s awesome, she takes care of the employees. We have a kickball tournament coming up on Labor Day which we’re gonna win… It’s cool ya know there’s little parties and stuff and you can go to any other store and it feels the same way and when we all get together it’s fun. You feel that not only here in the building, but I feel like it goes outside of that too to all the restaurants together.

What’s your favorite part about working at Sacks Cafe? I love the freedom that the management gives each of their employees and I enjoy how they prop us up to think for ourselves.
