PUBLISHER / EDITOR ASSISTANT EDITOR WEB MASTER

MILESTONES L E T T E R F R O M T H E E D I TO R

Welcome to Vieques and thanks for picking up a copy of the Vieques Insider Magazine! We're excited to be entering into our third year of publication with this edition, a true milestone among many at the heart of this issue. Defined in many ways, milestone can mean a significant event in the development of a person, organization or nation. The timeline on pages 18-20 presents a brief outline of events from the Pre-Arawak era to Spanish Colonization to the Navy occupation and departure. These were milestones that helped shape the Vieques we know and love today. Milestone can also mean a physical location serving as a directional marker. The house on Vieques with ceramic cows on the front lawn (page 43) is just such a marker to residents. Las Vaquitas (the cow house) is an island landmark that gives locals a sense of place, and is just quirky enough to be memorable. Unique to Vieques, Las Vacitas is our “house with the cows”, and knowing about it kind of makes you a Vieques insider. Speaking of Vieques Insider, the magazine had a milestone event this summer with the launching of our new website. The site will now serve as a cultural archive of the rich diversity of island life here. As for island life, there are turning points every year as we move through the seasons. After a long, hot, summer dodging hurricanes while living for days without power, we look forward to the buzz of high season and the holiday festivities. Our holiday gifts are you, the visitors, bringing the outside world to the island. Your smiles, your enthusiasm, and your love for the island; these things tell us we live someplace very special. Enjoy all Vieques has to offer. And we will enjoy you!

Letter to the Editor

................................................................................................................................................. ................................................................................................................................................. ................................................................................................................................................. ................................................................................................................................................. My name is Brayden Thompson, I’m 11, and I’m from Virginia. I recently visited Vieques with my family over spring break. I was with my grandparents, mom, dad, sister, and an aunt, uncle, and cousin who live in Vieques. We stayed at an amazing house that even had a pool! This was pretty much our routine: Wake up, eat breakfast, get our bathing suits on, go to the beach, come home and get in the pool, eat dinner, then sleep. The beaches were beautiful! It was so fun being able to snorkel and see the creatures underwater! The food was very good as well. My favorite place to eat was Duffy’s (If you go, I recommend the chicken wings or nachos.), but we didn’t go to every restaurant/place to eat on the island. We also went to the Bio (bioluminescent) Bay. We went out on a kayak and saw single-celled organisms called dinoflagellates that light up. The whole trip was a great experience, except for one thing. There were so many stray dogs on the streets with no one to take care of them. I’ve never seen a stray dog in Virginia where my family lives. It was really hard for me to see all of the dogs without homes. This made me really sad. There was a certain dog though, that really affected me. It was a dog that only had three legs. It was getting around ok, but the fact that the dog only had three legs and didn’t seem to have an owner, made me feel really bad. And at every restaurant we would go to, the dogs would just stand there waiting for food. The dogs were really nice, and all they wanted was some love. There is a humane society in Vieques, and if every tourist donates just two dollars, the humane society would get about two hundred thousand Brayden and Lilly Thompson with their dollars for the dogs. Please help the dogs if possible. dog Remy in Virginia. Brayden Thompson

NAMES, IDENTITY, AND HISTORICAL IMPORTANCE During the time of the U.S. Navy occupation of Vieques the beaches were renamed based on colored flags placed on them for training exercises. Set in motion by elders and community leaders from Vieques the effort is underway to reclaim the former names of the beaches and restore their cultural significance and longevity. Internet sites and publications still use the Navy names of beaches and you will hear many islanders still using the English names as well. But while you are here, please paint the mental map in your mind with the original Spanish names. The English names are listed below for your reference to the pull out map on the inside back cover. Thank you for participating in this milestone effort by honoring and using the original Spanish names of the beautiful beaches of Vieques.

HISTORICAL NAMES / FORMER U.S. NAVY NAMES CARACAS / RED BEACH PLAYUELA / GARCIA BEACH PATA PRIETA / SECRET BEACH LA CHIVA / BLUE BEACH LA PLATA / ORCHID BEACH PUNTA ARENAS / GREEN BEACH CAMPAÑA / PURPLE BEACH MATIAS / YELLOW BEACH 16

Triglidae GURNARD OR SEA ROBIN

As you snorkel the waters of Vieques look for the Gurnard or Sea Robin. These bottom feeding fish get their name from large pectoral fins resembling wings that open when swimming. They also have spiny legs - three on each side - that allow them to "walk" on the sea bottom in search of food. This beautiful specimen was discovered under the Esperanza sugar pier during a snorkeling excursion with the summer Manta Camp kids!

Fill Up or Top Off! The two gas stations on the island can run out of gas if deliveries are delayed. The gas trucks come on the ferry so it can be a long wait if you run out. So if the lines at the station are not long, stop in. When it is busy the lines form in one direction only and sometimes go around the block. If you see an empty spot at the pump, before pulling in, check to see if there is a line coming from the opposite direction. Go with cash; they don’t take debit or credit cards. Fix a Flat Pick one of these up at any convenience store or gas station on the island and save yourself a lot of trouble. Flats happen and usually not in the most convenient places. Just connect, inflate and go! It will only seal temporarily so call your rental company for directions on where to go to get it fixed. Leave No Trace Remember to leave the beach just as you found it. If you or your children dig holes or make sand castles, level the sand before you go. Don’t make huts from the palms for shade. Many beaches are turtle nesting beaches and baby sea turtles can get stuck, diverted by sand mounds or obstructions on their way to the ocean. Cell Service at the Beach If you hire a publico to take you to the beaches remember to arrange a pick up time before they drive off because cell service may not be available. A Twist or a Tap If your car won’t start when leaving the beach, before panicking, first check your battery cable connections. On rough roads they tend to bounce and loosen. Tighten them up or give them a tap and try again!

Vieques has the most number of beaches of all the municipalities in Puerto Rico.

Did you know?

If you love our natural beaches, here’s why: Most people who come to Vieques fall in love with its natural beauty, in particular its gorgeous awardwinning beaches. However, most folks don’t realize that they remain natural because they are within conservation lands managed by a consortium of organizations & agencies of Puerto Rico & the U.S.

• Sunbay Balneario (Beach Park) is managed by the Compañia de Parques Nacionales (National Park Company). • DNER manages the Puerto Mosquito Bioluminescent Bay Reserve which extends 9 miles out to sea, as well as Cayo Tierra and Cayo de Afuera, Media Luna, and Navio. Recently DNER

partnered with Vieques Conservation and Historical Trust to protect and conserve these areas. • The PR Conservation Trust manages Cerro El Buey Reserve which is a large area within the bunkers on the western end of Vieques. • A large portion of the island is managed by the

Vieques National Wildlife Refuge It is the 2nd largest conservation area in all of Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands after El Yunque National Forest (the Rainforest) and had the honor of being voted 4th most popular national wildlife refuge of all 564 refuges throughout the U.S. Third largest is St. John’s National Park in the U.S.

Virgin Islands that lies a hop skip and jump from us. The Vieques National Wildlife Refuge is part of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service. It is a sister agency to the National Park Service—both are under the U.S. Department of Interior. If you love nature, plan ahead to visit some of these natural treasures of the Caribbean.

H O L I D AY TRADITIONS

three kings' day The epiphany Jan 6th BY JOSÉ CARASQUILLO

As a child the night before Three Kings’ Day, I went out into the field, clipped the greenest leaves of grass, put them inside a shoe box, and then placed the box by my bed so that the horses transporting the Three Kings would have food once they entered the house. The North American counterpart tradition is to leave milk and cookies for Santa. But by late afternoon of December 25th Santa is on his way back to the North Pole while in Latin America and Spain, millions of children still await “el día de los Reyes Magos”. This is the day children traditionally receive holiday presents in Latin America. For many Christians around the world the holiday season doesn’t officially end until the 12th day of Christmas, also known as the Feast of the Epiphany or Three Kings Day. The holiday falls on January 6th and marks the adoration of the baby Jesus by the Three Kings. 24

'tis the season

lechón Lechón is the name for roast pig that has been cooked long and slow, in many cases overnight. Lechón is to Christmas in Vieques what turkey is to Thanksgiving in the States. The recipe is a simple one: pigs are covered in a marinade of salt, pepper, oregano and “sazón” - a local seasoning made from paprika, coriander, cumin, oregano, and garlic. They are then roasted on a spit in a giant concrete propane oven then finished over charcoal to give the meat that old-fashioned flavour. Because of the slow cook the juices stay intact, helping to keep the meat moist and tender. Outside exposure to the coals makes the skin brown and crackly, as unique a treat as the meat itself. The pork is then served with a variety of sides: rice and pigeon peas, pasteles (meat and ground vegetables wrapped in a banana leaf), yuca, and yams. Find Lechón at Rancho Choli (787-698-4464) in Esperanza or pre-order with Don Tito’s Lechónera (787-741-2898) just outside of Isabel II.

pasteles Pasteles are sometimes described as Puerto Rican tamales, the difference being they are made with root vegetables instead of corn. Making them is labor intensive work which is why they are traditionally done during the holiday season. Fortunately, many restaurants here on Vieques serve pasteles around the holidays.

tembleque

BY SCOTT APPELL

The Oxford Companion to Food describes custard as “a mixture of milk and eggs thickened by gentle heating”. Although accurate for most custard, there are completely dairy-free desserts called “custard” produced by cooks from various cultures in Asia, the Mediterranean, Italy and Mexico. On Vieques, one such custard is called tembleque, a heated and stirred coconut custard. A mixture of coconut milk (not a true dairy milk), cornstarch and sugar with a pinch of salt, it is rigorously whisked on a stovetop until thickened. The Spanish name refers to its wiggly, jittery consistency when it is cooled and removed from the mold. Enhanced with a sprinkling of ground cinnamon it is delicious. Watch for it on local menus. ¡Buen provecho!

Our traditional homemade version of eggnog combines coconut, spices and of course, rum! No holiday festivity would be complete without this delicious, creamy concoction. the easy recipe 2 cans (12 oz. each) Evaporated Milk 1 can (15 oz.) Cream of Coconut 1 can(13.5 oz.) Coconut Milk ½ cup Sweetened Condensed Milk ½ cup white rum (optional) 1 tsp. vanilla extract ½ tsp. ground cinnamon, plus more for garnish, if desired In bowl of blender, add evaporated milk, cream of coconut, coconut milk, sweetened condensed milk, rum (if using), vanilla extract and ground cinnamon. Blend on high until mixture is well combined.Pour coconut mixture into glass bottles or containers. Transfer to refrigerator. Chill until cold. To serve, stir or shake bottle well to combine. Pour coquito into small serving glasses. Garnish with ground cinnamon and cinnamon sticks, if desired.

Many visitors think that Vieques is a sleepy, laid back island where you can lay in your hammock on the beach without a care in the world. For the most part, this is true. But petty theft is everywhere and your vacation can end badly without some precaution and common sense. Follow some safety tips and always be aware of your surroundings and belongings. ALWAYS lock the doors where you are staying. Period. First floor, second floor, every door.

DON’T leave a cell phone or iPad charging next to an open window. Never leave house keys next to a window.

DON’T take valuables to the beach.

NEVER leave valuables unattended.

DON’T lock your car at the beach. Leave it open with nothing in it.

USE COMMON SENSE when walking around at night. Never walk on the beaches alone after dark.

The speed limit on the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge is 5-25 MPH depending on location so please pay attention to the signs. Failure to do so could result in a fine. Speeding creates washboard bumps on the gravel roads, which lead to more accidents and limits road travel for locals who do not drive large trucks or rental SUVS. Hikers, joggers, cyclists, horseback riders, wildlife and many others use the roads. Please slow down when passing others on a road and be considerate of others. Also note that the closing time of the FWS gate is 6:30 pm (October 1st to March 31st).

granola Y good mornin'

BY: AMY GORDON

take home a taste of Vieques

ou can't pack sunshine and ocean breezes in your suitcase, but you can still start your day Vieques-style when you get home. Since it opened in 2014, the restaurant at El Blok has been known for its outstanding homemade granola. Originally, this sweet treat was available only to hotel guests, but now all visitors and locals are welcome to partake. The chefs at El Blok make granola several times a week using a recipe that includes organic honey from the main island of Puerto Rico, oats, cinnamon, brown sugar and fresh coconut. Each batch takes hours to bake; if you smell sweetness at the top of the Malecón in the early morning hours it's probably that day's granola, which has been cooking in the oven for most of the night. El Blok is open for breakfast daily so stop in to enjoy a bowl in the eco-wise hotel's open air restaurant. If you can't get enough there, pick up a bag to bring home. The team at El Blok will even ship you more when you run out – just call and ask.

When venturing out to the watery wonders of Vieques you are better off not doing it on your own. Trying to save a little money or being a hero can put you and your loved ones in harm’s way. The charters and tours available here are inexpensive and educational, and the captains and guides on Vieques are professionals. Their familiarity with local water and weather conditions will help determine the best time and location for your tour. Plus, all the necessary equipment and expertise is supplied for a fabulous day.

LET’S GET OUR FEET WET the choices abound Number 1 on the must do list is the BIOLUMINESCENT BAY. Vieques’ own natural wonder, the micro organisms (dinoflagellates) glow in a spectacular aquatic light show when disturbed. The Milky Way above and the bio Bay below will leave you reeling in a dazzling display of nature's grandeur. SNORKELING introduces you to an underwater world of color and shapes dancing in spectacular seascapes. The variety of sea life

and corals will astound even the most experienced snorkeler. Find variety in the types of snorkeling tours offered as well. Snorkel offshore reefs from a chartered sail or boat excursion, hard to find reefs that require a guide and a kayak, night time snorkel tours, Hookah tours, which allow you to breath through a hose connected to the surface, and night time tours; all fun and exciting forms of snorkeling newly available on island.

Want to stay under longer? Our SCUBA DIVING operators supply top of the line equipment with experienced and certified guides who emphasize safety. Classes are offered that range from beginner introduction classes to advanced open water trips. PADDLEBOARDING can be an exercise in tranquility or just plain exercise. The usually calm waters make this fast growing sport a pleasurable family activity.

39

If you want to explore the mangroves, see the Bio Bay or head to open water, you will find a KAYAKING tour to accommodate your interests. Consistent breezes - compliments of the trade winds - create a variety of SAILING opportunities available on both the North and South shores. Captains will often sail together at the request of larger groups.

Need an adrenaline rush? You can find JET-SKI RENTALS in Esperanza. (Please use extreme caution around other watercraft, snorkelers and our fragile reefs.) Or, board a POWER BOAT for a quick trip to the vibrant offshore reefs or book a FISHING TRIP for that catch of a lifetime.

SMALL ISLAND, BIG HEARTS

for the lov e o f animals

A look at the island organizations helping our furry friends BY: AMY GORDON

For a relatively small island Vieques is packed with big-hearted people who work hard to improve life for the island’s animals. Four local nonprofits focus on a variety of ways to help our pets and wildlife, from creating safe havens to finding loving homes to fostering an understanding between the island’s people and its animals.

VIEQUES HUMANE SOCIETY AND ANIMAL RESCUE ................................. JUNTOS ................................. BIG FAT CARIBBEAN RESCUE ................................. VIEQUES ANIMAL SANCTUARY

Whether you’re here for a short visit or an extended stay there are several ways you can do your part. “This is a real place where tourists can help the animals,” says Mary Anne Mather, Board Secretary of the Vieques Humane Society and Animal Rescue. Consider donating your time, resources and expertise while you’re here and even after you’ve gone home.

41

VIEQUES HUMANE SOCIETY AND ANIMAL RESCUE Started in in the early 1980s by a group of animal-loving islanders, the Vieques Humane Society and Animal Rescue offers a comprehensive solution to animal care. Their Santa Maria shelter houses upwards of 100 animals at any time, including cats, dogs and even a few horses. VHSAR also operates a re-homing program with partner organizations in the United States to find loving, off-island homes for animals in need. In addition, the non-profit runs spay and neuter clinics and provides a low-cost veterinary clinic that’s open to all animals on the island. “We offer opportunities for the island community to provide responsible care for their own animals,” Mary Anne Mather explains. Between 2013 and 2015, VHSAR spayed and neutered about 1,000 dogs, and the organization found homes for 214 animals in need between December 2015 and September 2016.

HOW CAN YOU HELP? VHSAR operates a thrift store in Mambiche, and all proceeds benefit the organization’s great work. Several on-island fundraisers throughout the year, including bingo nights, hurricane pools, concerts, cooking competitions and an art auction at the Siddhia Hutchinson Gallery, allow VHSAR to raise money and build awareness. You may have seen Miss Fuzzi for sale at local stores; this adorable children’s book is based on one of the organization’s best success stories. VHSAR also produces an annual calendar complete with photos of local residents and their lovable pets; the 2017 edition is on sale now.

The VHSAR is currently home to 95 dogs, 36 cats, and 3 horses.

OUR BIG FAT CARIBBEAN RESCUE Laurie Mosher conceived of the idea for Our Big Fat Caribbean Rescue in 2013 after her adopted sato (island dog), J. Edgar, passed away from prior neglect. “After his death, I vowed to help as many satos as I could,” she explains. She does so by coordinating rescue trips to bring dogs from Vieques to Canada, where they can then be adopted into forever homes. What started as a one-woman operation has flourished, thanks in part to devoted volunteers and collaborations with the VHSAR and the Hamilton Burlington SPCA in Canada. Laurie transports about seven dogs each month, and to date, 87 dogs have been flown off island and adopted. 42

“I have been doing this for a little over two years, and it’s the best thing I do,” says Laurie.

HOW CAN YOU HELP? OBFCR pays for the flights, medications, kennels and microchipping, which can add up to some high costs. The organization holds two fundraisers in Hamilton, Canada each year; a “nine and dine” golf tournament and a softball tournament. Interested volunteers can contact OBFCR about setting up local fundraisers in their own communities. For details, more information or to make a donation visit www.viequesrescue.com.

To date, 72 dogs have been placed in forever homes by Our Big Fat Caribbean Rescue.

JUNTOS Five years ago a group of forward-thinking animal advocates established Juntos, an outreach organization that promotes humane education on the island. Through the non-profit a humane education-certified teacher works with young students to promote an understanding of animals and the environment. In fact, one local middle school recently became a humanecertified school. The subject is an essential part of the students’ curriculum, and there’s a section in the school library devoted entirely to books on the subject. When school’s out, Juntos runs a week-long summer camp. So far, the organization estimates it has reached roughly 1,600 Viequense kids. In addition to its in-school presence Juntos participates in outreach visits to the island’s many barrios. “We call it completing the circle of care,” says Andrea Kaufman, local veterinarian and Juntos Board Secretary. Working with Puerto Rico’s department of social work, Juntos representatives educate residents on the right way to treat animals. “We want to expand the barrio visits as much as we can,” says Andrea. Juntos hopes to soon declare the island’s first humane-certified barrio, where community members can tout their pride about their collective treatment towards animals and the environment.

HOW CAN YOU HELP? Juntos encourages interested volunteers to offer their time and resources, be it grant writing, teaching, legal expertise or other services. Stores across the island carry clothing and other items adorned with the Juntos logo, and all proceeds benefit the organization’s efforts; show your support by buying something and sporting it when you get back home. Juntos works with the Vieques Rotary Club on events to raise money, including an annual ticketed dinner party and high-end auction that is always a crowd-pleaser. For details, more information or to make a donation visit www.juntosvieques.org.

Juntos outreach programs visit the island's barrios and educate the community on the proper treatment of animals.

VIEQUES ISLAND ANIMAL SANCTUARY Oftentimes older or infirm animals are unlikely to get adopted, but that doesn’t mean they are less deserving than their spry counterparts. Hard-toadopt animals can find a forever home at the Vieques Island Animal Sanctuary. This kindhearted organization aims to eradicate animal homelessness across the island. Run by Wendy Price, VIAS offers food, medical care, and shelter and refuge for a menagerie of dogs, cats, fish, birds, turtles, rabbits and horses. The sanctuary sits on several acres where animals can coexist and live out their days in a loving and safe environment.

HOW CAN YOU HELP? VIAS is always in need of supplies that help keep the operation up and running. Consider donating animal food, medicine, veterinary care, shelter and fence repair, horse feed, bird seed, chicken feed, cat litter, stainless steel food and water bowls, chain link, rejas, tin, plywood, metal poles, cement blocks, sheets, towels, chew toys, houses and beds for dogs, wind generators and solar panels.

Older and hard to adopt animals find a caring, safe forever home at the Vieques Island Animal Sanctuary.

For details, more information or to make a donation visit www.viequesislandanimalsanctuary.zohosites.com. 43

hen you’re driving on Rt. 997 between Esperanza and Isabel II keep an eye out for a pink house that has become an unexpected Vieques icon. Known locally as The Cow House, or Las Vaquitas in Spanish, the home gets its name from the two cow-shaped lawn ornaments that decorate the front yard. On an island with unnamed streets and no traffic lights Las Vaquitas is an important landmark. You’ll often hear locals say, “Turn at the Cow House,” or, “Go past Las Vaquitas,” when giving driving directions. The cows are even identified (as cows) on the Vieques Island Map, but where did these storied cows come from? Owner Lucy Asencio Diaz bought her first cow from a woman in Monte Santo four years ago. The cement sculpture was so heavy that it took four men to help her get it into and out of the car! Lucy found the

second cow a few years later when she was traveling in Las Piedras on the main island of Puerto Rico. She stumbled across a cow that matched hers perfectly, and when she told the seller her story, he sold it to her on the spot. Each cow is roughly two feet tall, and Lucy keeps them looking sharp by bleaching and scrubbing them every once in a while; then she recreates them with oil paints. She even puts water out or tethers the statues with a rope. Why? Because it makes her laugh and she gets a kick out of it! And, how else to give visitors proper directions? She loves that her vacas have made it onto the official map, and she hopes to add a bull and some calves to the mix soon. Want to see Las Vaquitas for yourself? The house is about halfway between the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge and Isabel II. When you see two cow statues in the yard, you’ll know you’re in the right place.

Tu Papa, Eddie

Dear Marley You are only 16 months old at the moment, but one day you will be a man and will read this letter. I want you to know that when I had the idea to start the Flamboyán Trees road project I had two things in mind. First, I wanted you to have something beautiful and inspiring to always remember me by and to show you that dreams can come true if we put our heart and soul into them and don’t give up. Second, I wanted to add even more beauty to the island I adore and call my home.I hope it will be something for you and everyone to enjoy every time you drive through the tree tunnel. You are my inspiration for the future; and I hope you feel that my love is as big and bright as the flamboyán trees will be one day in their full, floral splendor. And as you drive down that road I hope you think of your father and smile. Your father, Eddie

ddie Ras has planted 175 flamboyán trees on both sides of the road called La Recta de Marta. The road cuts across the island from 997 into the hills of Los Chivos, a route Eddie grew up taking to and from his house every day. In fact, Marta was the name of his half-brother’s grandmother. A naturalist at heart, Eddie and his wife, Sarah Rose, watched the road become a dump site, and they would spend hours cleaning up the trash. His vision was always to beautify the road by using flamboyán trees to form a flowering umbrella across it, creating a shaded, romantic esplanade. When their son Marley came into the world a year ago Eddie was determined to make his dream

48

a reality and teach his son by example. With support from friends and Mayor Victor Emeric, he set himself to the work. It wasn’t easy, and when 36 of his saplings were vandalized Eddie’s heart was broken just a little. Replanting with larger branches, he is even more determined to realize his dream. When Marley reaches 5 years of age and is old enough to appreciate the beauty, the road will be ablaze with color. Eddie hopes the project will be adopted by the whole community and the baby trees will be taken care of into adulthood. He envisions domino tables, an exercise path and communal benches in the area, and that it will become the most romantic esplanade in the Caribbean.

Plant the Seed Watch it Grow By Scott D. Appell

You can appreciate the efforts and vision of Eddie Ras if you are lucky enough to be visiting Vieques in late June through July. It is blooming time for the flamboyán, and our Isla Nena is ablaze with color.

O

fficially called the Royal Poinciana (flamboyán is the local name), this native of Madagascar is one of the most beloved of tropical and subtropical ornamental trees due to its innumerable masses of large flower clusters. Blossoms range from bright yellow through orange-red to vivid cerise, and the branches grow outward as well as upward.

If, like Eddie Ras, you love the tree and would like to grow your own from seed it’s remarkably easy, provided your soil is not as “rock hard” as Vieques and you live in a completely frost-free area of the States; Southern Florida or California come to mind. Upon pollination, the flowers are followed by 12” to 20” hard, dark-brown, machete-shaped seedpods. The seeds can be planted. First though, know your Customs rules. The seeds and/or pods of the flamboyán are legal to bring back to the U.S., but you must declare them. To germinate the seeds you’ll need a bit of coarse sandpaper. Rub a pointy end of the seed on the sandpaper with gusto: the idea is to wear a bit of the extremely tough seed coat away. Horticulturally, this process is known as scarification. Then soak the seeds for several hours in a glass of water. If the seeds float, discard them. If they sink, you’re ready for action. Interestingly, an alternative technique is to place the seeds in a bowl with almost-boiling water – 165˚F, to be exact – leaving them to soak for 24 hours. Plant them half-inch deep, flat side down in a 4” pot filled with a light organic soil mixture, and keep slightly moist with a minimum temperature of 70˚F. They will germinate in as little as 3 days! Remember they can become 50 feet tall and 150 feet wide, so you’ll need plenty of garden space! They’ll blossom in 3 to 5 years. Additionally, this tree may be propagated by cuttings but I mean cuttings the thickness of your arm and as tall as you are! This ability is colloquially called “quick stick” because the branches are stuck in the soil.

The seeds are individually encapsulated horizontally; ready to slide out upon the pod’s maturity.

Eddie used the "quick stick" method to plant La Recta de Martha, although the name makes him chuckle. There was nothing quick about his work. QUICK STICK METHOD

Hundreds of hours were spent planting La Recta de Marta. Eddie’s method for planting in the rock hard earth was to dig a 5inch hole and then fill it with a gallon of water to soften the next layer of earth. 49

VIEQUES

Avian Crossroads BY ROSIE DEMPSEY

Humans aren’t the only visitors flying down to Vieques. Sixty percent of all the birds here also live elsewhere—their numbers topping ours. Most come for the winter season, just like people. Others are “passage migrants” stopping over like a weekend visitor for a quick rest and grub. Migrators are part of a great diversity of birds who find protected habitats like the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge conducive to the good life. About 20% of all birds migrate immense distances along annual flyways. Of the 2000 migratory bird species worldwide, about 110 come to Vieques. They navigate, often along coastlines and mountain ranges, as if using GPS, except it is learned behavior or genetic programming–scientists are still figuring it out. One winter migrator to our shores is the Semipalmated Sandpiper, who summers on the U.S. east coast. “Semipalmated” describes this wading bird’s partially webbed toes. Now a year-round resident, the Egret is a signature sight on Vieques, so often seen standing on the back of a horse. It's full name is Cattle Egret or Garza Africana in Spanish, and it originally migrated here but is now a native. Its relatives, the Great Egret and the Snowy Egret, are natives too, and their numbers swell with winter migrators as they do for the Great Blue Heron. Many of our migrators are pollinators of wildflowers and other plants and the dispersers of seeds, while others contribute to the control of insects and rodents. Birds cover both ends of the food chain – predator and prey. And yes, big birds eat little birds. For a small island, Vieques has a long and rich ornithological history. The Taíno had at least 40 words for birds while their symbolic art often mixed bird characteristics, such as a long pointy beak, with the human form.

Outsiders have been cataloguing Vieques’ birds going back to the French naturalist LaBat in 1705. These historic records reveal that parrots and flamingoes were once common here. Today, a flock of flamingoes is a glorious, rare sight on Vieques. “We’re celebrating the centennial of the Migratory Bird Treaty that helps conserve birds that migrate across national borders,” says Mike Barandiaran, manager of the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge. He shared that there are plans to reintroduce endangered species like the Yellow Shouldered Blackbird and the Puerto Rican Parrot. Two Vieques birds have flourished enough to be removed from the endangered species list the Brown Pelican and the Peregrine Falcon. Mike also says we can look forward to more trails in 2017 on the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge. So keep your eyes peeled for our winged friends. They are such a visible part of the extensive wildlife that makes Vieques so special.

Daphne deJersey Gemmill first came toVieques 32 years ago to do a bird survey at the invitation of the Vieques Conservation & Historical Trust. Her passion and expertise were not lost on the Vieques National Wildlife Refuge, who funded some of her work and shared data as part of a close working relationship that began 15 years ago and continues today. Her book, “Birds of Vieques Island Puerto Rico,” is a photo-filled, accessible guide available at the Fort Marisol Museum, the VCHT, and the newly reopened TICATOVE visitors’ station. FOR OVER A DECADE THE PIER WAS OFF LIMITS TO THE PUBLIC AND HAD BECOME A SAFE HAVEN FOR SEA TURTLES. UNFORTUNATELY, FISHING FROM THE PIER IS HAVING DETRIMENTAL EFFECTS ON THE SEA TURTLES BELOW AS THEY AND OTHER SEA LIFE GET TANGLED IN THE CUT FISHING LINES. SOUTH SHORE BEACHES

to Navío. Go into the cave on the left side of the beach (if facing the water) for an excellent photo spot! There’s good surf so bring your boogie board! ........................................................

BEACHES ON THE VIEQUES FISH AND WILDLIFE REFUGE* For reference, Sol Food is parked right in front of the entrance to the FWS Refuge ........................................................

........................................................

ESPERANZA BEACH To the east and

CARACAS* From 997, turn into the FWS

SUNBAY Accessible by the gated entrance off 997, Sunbay is a one mile stretch of beach. Sunbay has lifeguards and bathhouse. The entrance is 5 miles from Isabel II and 0.7 miles from Esperanza (the Malecon). There is a $2 entrance fee. ........................................................

MEDIA LUNA Enter the gated entrance off 997 at Sunbay. Follow the dirt road at the end of Sunbay and travel 0.6 more miles to Media Luna. Great for small children, Media Luna is shallow. You can walk 30 ft out into the water and still be in waist deep water. Also, for a free “spa experience,” enjoy an exfoliation from the silky, fine sand. ........................................................

NAVIO Follow directions to Media Luna but pass Media Luna and take a left at the sign and go another 0.3 miles. The road is extremely rough and 4wd is required but you can also park at Media Luna and walk 60

west of the fishing piers in Esperanza. ........................................................

PLAYA GRANDE Leave Esperanza on 996 going west and come to a T (rt. 201). Take a left. Go 1 mile to where the road dead ends and take a left. Follow road to the bottom of the hill. Take a right onto dirt road to find a beach spot. Great beach for walking. Playa Grande is a turtle nesting beach so be sure to keep dogs on a leash and watch out for roped off nests. ............ ............................................

PLAYA NEGRA (BLACK SAND BEACH) Leave Esperanza on 996 going west. Come to T (201) and take left. Drive 0.1 mile and there will be a guard rail and small pull off on your left. Park here. [It is easier to turn around if you drive 100 feet more to Gallery Galleon and turn around in drive just past entrance to Gallery.] Walk down the path to the dried stream bed and follow to the right. It is about a 20 minute walk to the beach. If it has rained, stream bed will actually be a small stream. Bring bug spray and water.

Refuge at the Sol Food truck. Go aprox 2 miles to a sign for Caracas. Turn right and go aprox 1.5 more miles. No shade except for picnic gazebos in the grass area. Watch out for the sandburs! (see below). Be very careful where you step when you are in the grassy area and kids should wear their shoes down to the sand (or water’s edge). Note: Only park in the parking lot, and not in the cul-de-sac at the very end, to avoid fines. ........................................................

PLAYUELA* From 997, turn into the FWS

Refuge at the Sol Food truck. Go aprox 2 miles to the brown sign for Caracas. Turn right and go aprox 1 mile to brown sign for Playuela and Tres Palmitas. Turn right and drive 2 minutes to the sign and take the walking path to the left to get to the beach. A short walk and you’re there! ........................................................

PATA PRIETA* From 997, turn into

BLAYDIN BEACH OR MOSQUITO BEACH Follow direc-

the FWS Refuge at the Sol Food truck and go aprox 2 miles. Pass turn to Caracas and continue straight on dirt road for aprox 1 mile and turn right at Pata Prieta sign. After 0.2 miles, follow the road to the right to a small parking area with sign. Walk down the (slippery) gravel path to the left of the sign to the beach. Rough road so 4wd is recommended. Bring a beach umbrella as there is little shade! ........................................................

tions to the pier but right before going out onto the pier there is a small sandy road to the left that leads to a shallow beach. There are lots of starfish here so be very careful where you step! ........................................................

PUNTA ARENAS Follow directions

LA CHIVA* From 997, turn into the

FWS Refuge at the Sol Food truck and go aprox 2 miles to the end of the paved road. Pass the sign for Caracas and continue straight on the dirt road. La Chiva has numbered spots #1-21. At marker #15 the road splits so stay right if you want to explore La Chiva spots #16-21. ........................................................

LA PLATA* Follow directions to La

........................................................

Chiva but when road splits take left and go 0.5 miles to reach La Plata. ........................................................

EL PARQUE CEIBA Go west on 201 approximatelyg 1 mile past the airport and follow the sharp curve to the right.Go down a small hill and the Ceiba tree is on your right. Enjoy the Ceiba tree without climbing, marking or damaging the roots. ........................................................

NORTH SHORE BEACHES

ROMPEOLAS Follow directions to the Ceiba tree but pass the Ceiba and continue on the main road to the left.Take the next right at the empty concrete structure with parking lot and this road will take you to the pier. Rompeolas pier is 1 mile long so it is great for beginning joggers or walkers! Great snorkeling on the left side of the pier.

SEA GLASS BEACH Drive into Isabel II on 200 and make a left onto main street (Calle Muñoz Rivera). Almost at the end of the street you will see an intersection with a church on your right. Make a left here and at the next intersection make a right. Park on the street (not in the yellow!) and walk to the left of the gazebo down a path to the beach. ........................................................

to Rompeolas but go past turn for pier and drive aproximately 2 miles. You will come to a sign that says you are entering FWS Refuge. Drive 1 mile and come to a T / there are spots to the left and to the right with the best snorkeling to your left. Much of Punta Arenas has eroded away so, in many places, there is not a beach to sit on until further down on the right. No-see-ums tend to come out in the afternoon so make it a morning excursion and bring your bug spray! ........................ ................................

BUNKERS To see the hidden Navy bunkers follow directions to Rompeolas but keep straight past the turn for pier. Drive 2 miles and take the second paved road to the left. This road is a short loop that will bring you back to the same road.

IF YOU DON’T HAVE TIME TO EXPLORE THEM ALL, THESE ARE INSIDER FAVORITES!

..................................................

LA CHATA Drive by the ferry on your left and go up the steep hill to the right of El Yaté Bar. Go by the lighthouse on your left and take the next right down a steep little hill. Curve to your left and follow along this shoreline road. Pass La Lanchita on left and drive aproximately 0.35 miles to a left turn onto a small dirt drive with two palms and large rocks at the end. La Chata! Keep your eyes open for sea glass. Don’t be surprised if you are swimming with horses! Many people come here to exercise them. ........................................................

EL GALLITO Pass the W on 200 going west and look for a parking area and short peninsula on your right. The beach is on the right. Great place to be at sunset! Excellent photo spot!
