Knowing how to advertise on Facebook is your first step in starting a Facebook campaign. You should do your homework before ever starting your first campaign and putting money into it that will soon be eaten up with CPM or CPC costs. But if you've never had any experience, how are you supposed to know the right way to advertise? That's a good question. It seems like a catch-22, almost. It's like a graduate fresh out of college looking for work but gets frustrated because every job they apply for requires two or more years of work history. Fortunately, you don't have to have on-the-job experience under your belt to learn what to do and what not to do when it comes to knowing how to advertise on Facebook. You can look at case studies, contact other internet marketers who have used Facebook, and even just do a little bit of online research to glean information that can help your first campaign. Here are a few pointers to get you started. First, let's take a look at the market that Facebook appeals to. Generally speaking, you're not going to be advertising to a lot of people who are 60 and above. Sure, your grandma might be on Facebook, and so might your best friend's great uncle. But will that be your main focus? Probably not. In general, Facebook is for kids and adults aged 13 and above. Technically speaking, Facebook's terms and conditions prohibit anyone younger than 13 from creating a Facebook profile. Sure, it happens, but they're not supposed to create one. Thus, don't try to sell to the 6-12 year old crowd, either. Think of your crowd as divided up into these types of groups: 1. The 13-17 year old crowd with school, starter jobs and relationships on their mind. This group likes to have fun, so marketing online games, video games, pop music, rap music, hip clothing and teen nightclubs to them works pretty well. 2. The 18-35 year old crowd with college, a new career, marriage, young children and shopping on their mind. You can divide this group into 18-24 year olds and 25-35 year olds as well, if you need to, since the former group might be into more of the nightclub scene while the latter group will be more serious. Young parents fall into this group as well, so keep that in mind when marketing. 3. The 36-45 year old crowd with kids leaving the house and with retirement in their sights. These groups are likely professionals or experienced moms and dads. Promoting baby stuff might not

work, but advertising for a new laptop, cruise tickets and college advice for upcoming high school graduates probably will. Facebook lets you further divide your groups by gender, relationship status, location and more. This is an advantage to advertising on sites like Google that might only guess about this information by looking at their overall web history and Google account information. You'll find you have a pretty good edge on targeting when you learn how to advertise on Facebook.
