Darting through the city: Manhattan Rhapsody Fall 2024 - Spring 2025 | Thesis

Merit Scholarship

Using the concept of ''Manhattanism" to examine urbanization under accelerated capitalism, focusing on congestion challenges. By studying vertical typologies, it aims to redefine urban density, addressing social and political issues in crowded environments and proposing innovative architectural solutions for the evolving demands of modern life.

2050 future layering city urban synergy

Mixed-use zen wellness center

Young people navigate fast-paced lives, particularly in art districts where creativity and human interaction thrive. Yet, spaces dedicated to mental health and well-being are scarce. This new micro-architecture blends urban activators with office and residential layers, drawing inspiration from tea culture to create synergy. Acting as a zen wellness center, it introduces a slower rhythm to city life — inviting people to live, pause, socialize, and meditate. By layering urban functions, the design seamlessly merges the city with architecture, extending and enriching the urban experience.

Reversed Public & Private Affordable Housing Indistinct Boundries

Humans are species that create their boundaries and keep them enclosed to people they are more familiar with. As such, housing spaces have tendencies to clearly distinguish private and public spaces. This co-living project aims to reverse the roles of private and public to engage human interactions.

This project is tailor made for young couples with a busy lifestyle. The amenities on site includes shared bathrooms, kitchens, workspaces and socializing areas. As such, it is much easier for busy people to connect as they will not even have to leave their home.

Evolution of Floor Plans: Minimal Dwelling Co-living

Minimal Dwelling

A 45-degree rotated grid structures the space, with a modular framework defining zones and allowing quick reconfigurations. A central patio offers fresh air and a private outdoor retreat, enhancing the interior experience.

Enter to access the patio on the left or indoor spaces ahead. Privacy increases from storage to workspace, sleeping, and dressing areas. Flexible design lets users adapt spaces to changing needs.

Liugong Canal Next Culture Landscape

City Typology and Urban Phyto-purification System

By exploring the mobility process (casting technique) of the Liu-gong Aqueduct and analyzing its durability, we revisit the longburied water canal. Two sections are selected as design and redevelopment targets — one reimagined as a new urban typology, and the other demonstrating how the canal can function as a city-wide water purification system. The focus is on the Lugongzhen Park section, incorporating phyto-purification. Through these two design approaches, we explore ways to actively preserve and extend the canal’s value.

SITE PLAN

Site Plan Nowadays, Scale:1/1800

For years, the park has been used for vehicle parking, contributing to urban heat island effects and worsening air pollution. Meanwhile, the deeply buried Liugong Canal has deteriorated into a foul, polluted waterway.

Emergent aquatic plants in a multi-level phyto-purification pond and gravel layers will purify water and air, completing urban wastewater treatment's secondary stage.

Post-pandemic Ecological Innovation Park Environmental Sustainability

This ecological industrial park, dedicated to promoting 24hour healthy architecture, is designed to sustainably respond to our changing planet, fostering a symbiotic relationship between natural and urban environments. By integrating passive design, smart technology, biophilia, and thermal comfort strategies, it creates opportunities for users to engage in a more balanced lifestyle, enhancing well-being and quality of life in the post-pandemic era.

I participated in the R&D phase, conducting research and developing strategies for ecological architecture and thermal design methodology. Based on site analysis and research findings, I adjusted the massing and designed the primary hybrid office space, incorporating flexible design to adapt to day and night layouts.
