Solidification of Dental Technology ne thing we know about history is that it can be read, but the future is written by the ones with imagination. A vast amount of knowledge is secured in our mental faculties throughout our lifetime. How this knowledge transforms into material is through education. Education derives from the Latin word “educo,” meaning to draw from within. Everything we see today was once a thought; someone had a vision which was not supported by what was already here but rather by what could come. Thought mixed with feeling and moved by action has provided us the comfort and convenience of what we call life today. A new year is in front of us; let us plant some seeds and nurture our crops so we can reap our harvest in spring. The dental technology industry is positioned to make its way into what we can call ‘The Age Gap.’ This process can be vividly seen as dental technologists in the industry head towards retirement. It is not only important but necessary for one to share their experiences with the new age of dental technologists who will be the future of dental technology, provide patientcentred care services, and maintain our craft by expressing the importance of supervision by a registered dental technologist. The ADTO has made it clear that as regulated healthcare professionals, our collective voice has reached not only other associations in the province but also associations and colleges across the nation. The solidification of dental technology means dental technology professionals

across Canada can be represented the same way by dental technologists who are for dental technologists. This collective voice can provide us with a position at the table with other national associations to make the necessary decisions which impact dentistry as we move forward. The analytics from our surveys in four different provinces, including Ontario, British Columbia, Alberta, and Quebec, all came back with the expected results of ‘highly in favour’ by dental technologists. As we march forward with the cooperation of other associations, we can see a bright future for the dental technology industry, which exemplifies professionalism in who we are and what we do. The continuous value we provide has been received well by our members and will only improve as the ADTO continues to get constructive feedback; we can pave the way for our members on what is important for them today. We are extremely excited for 2024 as we plan for better benefits, education, and social gathering platforms for you to do business and make relationships. On behalf of our Board of Directors, I would like to wish all individuals involved in the dental industry a bright future full of health, wealth, and a kick-ass smile.

Invest in Your Staff he summer has now wound down, and the fall is in full swing heading into Christmas. I was reflecting upon how much I love making single centrals for picky doctors and patients, and I was also reflecting upon a model from a PVS impression, wondering why it looks like stretched taffy from the Halloween bag and RX’d for a 5-unit bridge – “just do the best you can guys!” Our profession hasn’t changed in my 30+ years as a tech. These challenges will never change, but how we deal with these challenges can always change. Change begins in your heart with desire. I always encourage other techs to see these common frustrations as opportunities. We all know that inaccurate impressions that are wrong and missing information given for high-demand single centrals are struggles to profit from. However, in the big picture, leading a doctor professionally to get better results from their end and ours will always be a winner. It all begins with education and support. Labs that will win in today’s market will have the best education and support for clients. It’s that straightforward. All staff must have the same knowledge base and desire to achieve this. Investing in your staff should be just as important to an owner.
T
Here are three of the best opportunities to invest in your staff: 1. Order food for your employees for a webinar after work. 2. Bring in a corporate technician for a ‘lunch and learn.’ 3. Sign your staff up as members of the DTABC for $105.00 (plus tax) a year.
This gets them FREE access to the Pacific Dental Conference ($305.00 value) and brings them into the community of dental technology. They will be kept informed and updated on changes in the field and learn about any opportunities to upgrade their skills regularly by email. They will also have access to all benefits in the Assistant Category. This coming March, we have worked with the PDC organizers to bring in some of the best in CAD/CAM, dentures, and business development from Atlanta, GA – Dr. Andrew Currie, DDS, and Brian Lindke, CDT. Andrew and Brian are masters and educators in fullarch implant dentistry. Make your 2024 focus on investing in the education of ALL technicians in your lab. It is so economical to do it through the DTABC. Easy registration on the website at www.dtabc.ca under Dental Technician Assistants – register now to attend the 2024 Pacific Dental Conference for free! It will be the best business investment (ROI) for everyone’s professional growth. I am looking forward to seeing you all at the PDC! God Bless you all!

Strategies for Dealing with Seasonal Affective Disorder in the Workplace Kiljon Shukullari, HR Advice Manager, Peninsula Canada
n many parts of Canada, the bleak winter months bring darker, shorter days and icy temperatures. Although the change in weather may impact everyone’s mood negatively, for some, the winter blues can lead to significant mental health challenges. Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) affects 2-3% of Canadians in their lifetime, making it a subject matter that must be addressed. Employers should commit to raising awareness, reducing stigma, and promoting mental well-being.
I
Understanding Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) SAD, commonly known as seasonal depression or winter blues, is a form of depression that follows a seasonal pattern, typically arising in the fall and winter. The prolonged winters in Canada intensify the effects of SAD for extended periods of time. Causes of SAD Several factors contribute to the onset of seasonal depression: 1. Lower serotonin levels due to reduced sunlight can contribute to fatigue and depression. 2. Reduced sunlight exposure disrupts the body’s internal clock and can lead to depressive symptoms. 3. Changing circadian rhythms and melatonin production during darker winter months impact mood regulation. Identifying SAD symptoms Recognizing the signs of SAD is crucial for employers aiming to support affected employees. Common symptoms include persistent low mood, lack of energy, difficulty concentrating, changes in sleep patterns, alterations in appetite, weight gain or loss, and social withdrawal. Strategies for Supporting Employees with SAD: 1. Flexible work arrangements. Offer flexible work schedules that allow employees to have maximum exposure to natural light. Consider remote work options to create a comfortable environment and accommodate peak energy levels. 2. Create awareness. Share information about seasonal depression through email, newsletters, and internal communications. Provide resources on coping mechanisms, mental health impacts, and details about available support services. 3. Wellness workshops and programs. Implement mental-health-focused wellness programs, incorporating fitness classes (virtual or in person), mindful 10
WINTER 2023
sessions, stress management workshops, and educational webinars on mental health topics. 4. Offer Employee Assistance Programs (EAP). Make EAPs readily available, providing mental health resources, counselling, and support services. Communicate the availability of these services to ensure employees know how to access them when needed. 5. Encourage breaks and exercise. Promote regular breaks and exercise to prevent burnout. Encourage short walks or stretching breaks and consider offering discounted gym memberships or organization exercise sessions. By proactively addressing Seasonal Affective Disorder in the workplace, employers can create a supportive environment that promotes the mental well-being of their staff. Implementing these strategies will not only enhance employee morale during the challenging winter months but also contribute to a healthier and more productive workforce.

MANAGEMENT TIPS
Can You Fly Higher? Janice Wheeler, President, The Art Of Management Inc.
“Trust is more than just believing in someone’s reliability; it’s about knowing that they genuinely care about your well-being. Trust is the assurance that when you stumble and fall, there will be someone to catch you, offer a shoulder to lean on, and provide a comforting presence.”
wning and running a dental lab can be very challenging at times, with often weighty decisions to be made and lofty goals that may seem out of reach. At such times, the people around us can have an influence on what we do and how far we go. The answer to the question, “Can you fly higher?” depends on having the right support system ready and willing to support you.
O
As Josh Groban sang in “You Raise Me Up”: You raise me up so I can stand on mountains, You raise me up to walk on stormy seas, I am strong when I am on your shoulders, You raise me up to be more than I can be. 12
Finding and choosing your ‘shoulders’ can make all the difference in your pursuit of happiness, growth, and success. When it comes to selecting the right individuals or groups to trust for support, it’s crucial to seek empathetic and nurturing figures who will help you soar to new heights. Here are some key elements of a true and helpful support system: Trust In its essence, trust is the cornerstone of any meaningful relationship. It forms the basis of our human connections, and it becomes even more critical when seeking

help and advice. Trust is more than just believing in someone’s reliability; it’s about knowing that they genuinely care about your well-being. Trust is the assurance that when you stumble and fall, there will be someone to catch you, offer a shoulder to lean on, and provide a comforting presence. Empathy Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of another. When you’re seeking support, look for those who not only listen but truly understand your emotions and perspectives. Empathetic individuals

MANAGEMENT TIPS
can provide a comforting presence and offer advice and guidance without judgment. Non-Judgmental Attitude Support should come without strings attached or a judgmental attitude. Trust those who accept you for who you are and provide guidance without criticizing your choices. Effective Communication Communication is the foundation of any relationship. Seek people who can articulate their thoughts and feelings constructively. Effective communication ensures that your needs and concerns are considered and addressed appropriately. Encouragement and Positive Reinforcement The best support figures not only understand your dreams but also encourage you to pursue them. They provide positive reinforcement and inspire you to be the best version of yourself. They offer you the strength and guidance to soar to greater heights. Choose individuals who respect your boundaries, choices, and individuality.
Your Heroes As Bette Midler sang in the movie “Beaches”: Did you ever know that you’re my hero And everything I would like to be? I can fly higher than an eagle For you are the wind beneath my wings. The true heroes in your life will support and push you in the direction you want to go. They genuinely care about your growth and well-being. Choose individuals who are dedicated to helping you succeed in reaching your goals, no matter how lofty. They will be the wind beneath your wings. Reliability You may even make mistakes in flying high to meet your goals, but your support pillars will be there to catch you, help you back onto your feet, and push you back up. They will provide the emotional buoyancy to help you face challenges big and small with confidence. Navigating life’s challenges needs the right support network. Remember, you are not alone. Many people in your life are willing to be the wind beneath your wings, and it’s your task to identify and nurture these relationships.
Detrimental Advice Beware, however, that you may have to navigate well-meaning but detrimental advice. Some caring individuals unintentionally pull you down rather than lift you up. They have perhaps had bad experiences or calamities in their life for whatever reason and now try to prevent you from making similar mistakes. Sometimes, people may have good intentions but lack the understanding or awareness of your specific needs and goals. Their negativity can bring you down or slow your progress. Trust Your Instincts Ultimately, you know yourself better than anyone else. Trust your own intuition when evaluating advice. Make choices that align with your own values and goals. You can be your own hero, you know! In Conclusion Finding trustworthy support (the wind beneath your wings) is essential. Whether it’s family, friends, mentors, colleagues, or experienced consultants, these individuals offer trust, empathy, and unwavering support in your pursuit of happiness and success. Choose your heroes and soar like an eagle!
“The true heroes in your life will support and push you in the direction you want to go. They genuinely care about your growth and well-being. Choose individuals who are dedicated to helping you succeed in reaching your goals, no matter how lofty. They will be the wind beneath your wings.”

TANROOP NAGRA, SECOND-YEAR STUDENT AT VANCOUVER COMMUNITY COLLEGE
INTRODUCE YOURSELF! I was born and raised in Vancouver with an Indo-Canadian background that I am proud of. I’ve always had a passion for science and art, which led me to complete my associate degree in health science. That interest led me to pursue my current education in the science of dental technology at Vancouver Community College.
combined with the digital aspect. We have been learning to work on both our hands-on skills and how to digitally improve ourselves. Dental technology is advancing and dipping into using software to design crowns, dentures, etc. But we get the chance to learn the traditional ways first to build our overall knowledge needed to succeed within this career.
WHAT MOTIVATED YOU TO PURSUE A CAREER IN DENTAL TECHNOLOGY? The field of dentistry has always interested me. I was searching for a career that spoke not only to my interest in science but also to my creative side. When I came across dental technology, I personally did not know this discipline was an option. When I realized I could work within the dental field but be able to work hands-on and create different restorations and appliances, it intrigued me.
HOW HAVE YOU GROWN PROFESSIONALLY AND PERSONALLY SINCE YOU BEGAN THE PROGRAM, AND HOW DO YOU PLAN TO CONTINUE DEVELOPING YOUR SKILLS AS A DENTAL TECHNICIAN AFTER GRADUATION? I have grown both personally and professionally in many ways. Having no background in dentistry or dental technology whatsoever, I have gained so much knowledge about how our oral cavity works and how unique each tooth can be. I have also improved my time management skills, as I finish my work on time while ensuring the quality is up to scale. Personally, I have gained more self-confidence in my communication skills, alongside gaining friendships that are made to last. I will continue to do research and gain more knowledge on how I can improve my skills and provide others with any new knowledge that I gain over the years of my career. I feel it is important to constantly learn new ways to do things to help you be the best technician that you are capable of being. Being in this program, I have also gained many mentors that I know I can always reach out to whenever needed.
CAN YOU DESCRIBE YOUR EXPERIENCE WITH DENTAL TECHNOLOGY BEFORE ENTERING THIS PROGRAM? Before starting the program, I had no personal experiences with any dental technicians first-hand or even knew this field existed. Looking back, I had some dental work done and have had appliances in the past that I am sure we made from a dental tech. WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE PROGRAM SO FAR? WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR LEAST FAVOURITE? My favourite part of the program so far has been the hands-on traditional experiences when fabricating restorations and appliances CLICK HERE TO RETURN TO TABLE OF CONTENTS

MEMBER PROFILE
HOW DO YOU PLAN TO MARKET YOURSELF AND YOUR SKILLS TO POTENTIAL EMPLOYERS, AND WHAT UNIQUE STRENGTHS DO YOU BRING TO THE TABLE AS A DENTAL TECHNOLOGY GRADUATE? Graduating from this program, I feel like I have the upper hand in the digital aspect that this job requires. I know the dental technology field is trying to incorporate more of the digital side of things, and having that skill alongside the more hands-on way to do work will be an asset to many employers. Having knowledge about traditional and nontraditional ways of doing things will be a great strength. WHAT ARE YOUR SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM CAREER GOALS IN THIS FIELD? My short-term career goal is to get a job in a dental lab or clinic and gain that workplace experience and skills. Over time, I want to open my own lab and teach others about the great things this job entails. HOW DO YOU ENJOY SPENDING TIME OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL? Outside of school, I enjoy hiking, swimming and journaling. I use that time to wind down my day and prepare for what I have coming up. I feel it is important to care for yourself to be your best while on the job.

New Articulator CA 3.0 Large CANDULOR Expands Its Articulator Portfolio with the Articulator CA 3.0 Large with Adjusted Height Zurich, Switzerland – November 2023
he CA 3.0 LARGE articulator is a higher version of the CA 3.0. Together with the Plate Set for Splitex® and the Calibration Key compatible with Splitex®”, the CA 3.0 LARGE can be adjusted to the overall height of 126 mm and synchronized with the Artex® articulators of the Carbon series from Amann Girrbach. The articulator series CA 3.0 excels with its simplicity. It is characterized by its handy design and is lightweight and sturdy at the same time. Both articulators are suitable for removable and fixed prosthetics. The special feature of the articulators CA 3.0 and CA 3.0 LARGE from CANDULOR is the double cone, which simulates the shape of the temporomandibular joint head. As a result, unphysiological, straight movement patterns are avoided in lateral and transverse motion sequences. This allows copying the natural, three-dimensional movements, such as the lateral and Bennett movement of the patient’s natural masticatory movement. The restoration of the patient is spared excessive grinding or post-processing. Functional, aesthetic work can be created more clearly. An outstanding feature is the clean and corrosion-free split-cast surface with an incorporated magnet.

Preparing Dental Laboratories for the Digital Future Schaan, Liechtenstein – October 2023 igital dentistry is on the rise. Advanced digital workflows, encompassing digital impression taking, treatment planning, and automated production, enable dental laboratories to work more efficiently and cost effectively. The Ivoclar Group is a global pioneer in the development of synergistic dental systems. The company is one of the world’s leading suppliers of integrated solutions for high-quality dental applications, offering an extensive portfolio of products and systems, including a wide range of digital workflows that are designed to make the lives of dentists, dental technicians, and dental hygienists easier. The workflows, which are based on the expertise Ivoclar has gained over its 100 years of existence, comprise state-of-the-art technology, high-quality materials, and perfectly synchronized processes. Now, Ivoclar also offers a practical guide and an ROI calculator, which are intended to inspire, motivate, and guide interested dental laboratories and help them prepare for the digital future.
D
Digital Workflows – Dental Laboratories Prepare Themselves for the Future As the importance of digital transformation continues to grow, the dental industry is undergoing a profound change. Advanced digital workflows that incorporate aspects such as digitalization, planning and production, design and automated processes, make many steps faster and more efficient. Digital transformation also affects dental laboratories. Digital methods significantly reduce uncertainty in dental laboratory processes. Furthermore, they increase accuracy, precision, productivity, and reproducibility. The digital workflows of Ivoclar allow precision craftsmanship to be combined with digital production processes. Regardless of the digital transformation stage of the laboratory, Ivoclar offers advanced future-proof solutions for both beginners and experts. Going digital in the dental laboratory will also influence contemporary dentistry and will provide laboratories with major advantages. The wide variety of digital equipment supplied by Ivoclar includes high-performance scanners (PrograScan PS7), milling machines (PrograMill PM7), and sintering furnaces for zirconium oxide (Programat S2) for maximum flexibility and efficiency. Increasing Laboratory Efficiency with Digital Workflows Most investment evaluations focus on the initial costs. However, in the context of investing in state-of-the-art technology, software and materials for a dental laboratory, a broader view must be taken. Making an investment in a digital dental lab solution involves more than just learning how to use new products and connecting them to each other. Rather, it is important to develop a finely tuned overall system in which all the components within the integrated workflows work together smoothly in order to increase the laboratory’s

performance, efficiency, and quality. One way of making sure of obtaining a coordinated system of this kind is to choose a complete solution or several individual solutions from one manufacturer. Making a List of Important Criteria Helps the Decision-Making Process Apart from looking at the overall wide-ranging benefits of integrated workflows, it is also important to evaluate the individual products themselves. The different products all contribute to the efficiency of the entire workflow and can have a positive influence on laboratory costs by reducing redundancy and the time required for carrying out manual steps. Before integrating a product into a digital process, laboratories should identify the criteria that are most important to their very specific situation. For example, when selecting a suitable milling machine, aspects such as autonomous operation, speed and throughput, high-quality results, user-friendliness, and the validation of CAD and CAM software must be carefully assessed. Additional Support: “From Features to Profits” Guide from Ivoclar In an effort to help interested dental laboratories start their digital transformation process, Ivoclar has created a practical guide titled “From Features to Profits.” It is intended to help dental laboratories to make informed investment decisions in the future. The guide provides information about the criteria that need to be considered in preparation for going digital. This practical guide can be downloaded from the following dedicated landing page at www.ivoclar.com/digital-devices.
