MESSAGE
Will Varda, RDT, President Dental Technicians Association of BC
Dental Technology Partnerships: Advancements and Impact
ello Everyone,
HI’m thrilled to announce a significant development for our profession in BC and across Canada. I’ve had the pleasure of speaking extensively with Karim, the President of the ADTO. For months, our two Boards have been discussing something we have long needed in our province. By the end of the year, we will officially roll out a suggested fee guide for dental technology in BC!
While not mandatory or enforceable, the suggested fee guide will truly reflect our value. Developed by the ADTO, it is based on unbiased time-in-motion studies that carefully analyzed the time and effort required and the capital and material expenses necessary for nearly all lab tasks. We are deeply grateful for the ADTO’s efforts in creating this essential tool, and we’ve been pleased to contribute to its development costs. Adopting this suggested fee guide not only elevates our profession but also signifies a renewed partnership between our associations. With the BCCOHP expanding
and the federal government introducing the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), strong connections between associations across Canada have never been more essential.
The fee guide will serve as a vital resource for new laboratory owners and will be shared with the dentist association. More importantly, it establishes our value to the government and insurance companies. By formalizing our fee structure between BC and Ontario, we can come to the table as equal partners, helping ensure a smooth transition to the CDCP as a unified voice.
Exciting times lie ahead for our profession. If you’d like to get involved, please get in touch with the DTABC – there are Board positions available.
All the best,
Will Varda, RDT President

Navigating Winter Challenges: Strategies for Business Preparedness
Michelle Ann-Zoleta, Health & Safety Manager – Peninsula Canada
As winter sets in, with its sweeping snowstorms and plummeting temperatures, businesses face unique challenges. From unpredictable weather disruptions to potential risks to employee safety, it’s critical for companies to take proactive measures to protect both their operations and their workforce. Implementing a well-defined inclement weather policy is one of the most effective strategies for ensuring business continuity during the harsh winter months.
The
Importance of an Inclement Weather Policy
The unpredictable nature of winter weather can disrupt even the most carefully planned operations. Snow, ice, and freezing conditions can delay shipments, close roads, and even temporarily force businesses to shut their doors. These conditions can also pose serious risks to employee safety, especially when commuting to work becomes hazardous. As a result, employers must have a strategy in place that not only keeps the business running smoothly but also ensures the well-being of their staff.
An inclement weather policy is a set of guidelines and procedures designed to help businesses respond effectively to poor weather conditions, natural disasters, and emergencies. These policies typically include protocols for temporary closures and how to handle scheduling and pay during inclement weather events. By establishing such a policy in advance, businesses can create a clear, consistent framework for handling winter challenges, reducing confusion and ensuring that both employees and employers are on the same page.
Key Components of an Effective Inclement Weather Policy
A well-crafted inclement weather policy should cover a variety of factors to ensure that businesses can continue to operate effectively while also protecting their employees.
Below are five key components that every business should include:
1. Clear Expectations for Staff
One of the primary purposes of an inclement weather policy is to establish clear expectations for employees during winter disruptions. This includes defining work arrangements, outlining how employees should communicate absences, and detailing how time missed due to weather will be handled. By setting these expectations early on, businesses can avoid confusion and ensure everyone is aligned on what to do during a snowstorm or other disruptive weather event.
2. Employee Safety and Wellbeing
Employers should always prioritize employee safety and well-being, particularly during winter when weather-related hazards are common. An inclement weather policy should include clear guidelines for when it’s unsafe to travel or work. These guidelines can help mitigate the risks posed by icy roads, snowstorms, and other dangerous conditions, reducing the likelihood of accidents or injuries among staff.
3. Minimizing Disruption to Business Operations
Even when the weather is less than ideal, most businesses need to continue operating. An inclement weather policy should help minimize disruptions by providing a clear plan for handling business closures or delays. For instance, the policy may outline how to communicate with clients and customers about temporary closures and procedures to ensure that essential services continue. A structured approach to these challenges helps businesses maintain continuity even in difficult conditions.
The Benefits of Proactive Winter Preparedness
A solid inclement weather policy protects employees and enhances the business’s overall resilience. By preparing for winter disruptions in advance, companies can respond swiftly and effectively when the unexpected happens. This proactive approach ensures that businesses are better equipped to handle snowstorms, icy conditions, and other seasonal challenges without significant losses in productivity or revenue.
A well-prepared business can maintain a positive reputation by demonstrating care and responsibility toward its employees. By prioritizing safety, clear communication, and business continuity, companies can build trust and loyalty with their staff, customers, and clients. This can ultimately strengthen the business in the short and long term, helping it thrive even in the harshest winter conditions.
Winter presents a host of challenges for businesses, but with the right strategies, these obstacles can be managed effectively. Businesses can confidently navigate winter disruptions by implementing an inclement weather policy that addresses employee safety and operational continuity. With proactive planning and a commitment to preparedness, businesses can weather the storm and continue serving their customers and clients, no matter the weather.

The Biggest Hurdles to Success in Dental Labs (and What to Do About Them)
Janice Wheeler, President & CEO – The Art Of Management Inc.
Running a dental lab is no small feat. You’re not just dealing with teeth and technology; you’re navigating a business landscape that’s becoming more competitive every day. While dental labs play a critical role in patient care, they face unique challenges that can make or break their success. In this article, we’ll explore some of the biggest hurdles dental labs face and actionable solutions to overcome them.
1. Keeping Up with Rapid Technological Advancements
In recent years, the dental industry has experienced a surge in technology, from CAD/CAM systems to 3D printing. While these tools offer more precision and efficiency, they come with a steep learning curve and hefty price tags. Dental labs that can’t keep pace with technological changes risk falling behind their competitors.
What to Do About It: Invest in Education, Not Just Equipment
Before shelling out big bucks on the latest technology, ensure your team has the training and skills needed to make the most of it. Consider sending your staff to workshops, webinars, or industry events where they can stay updated on new trends.
Build a culture of continuous learning so your lab doesn’t just have the best tools but also the best team using them.
If budget constraints make upgrading difficult, leasing equipment or partnering with other labs to share costs might be a practical alternative.
2.
Maintaining Consistent Quality in High-Volume Workflows
Dental labs often juggle multiple cases at once. As the workload increases, maintaining consistency can become a challenge. Even minor errors in crowns, bridges, or implants can lead to costly remakes, dissatisfied clients, and damaged reputations.
What to Do About It: Implement Quality Control Processes
Standardize your workflow to ensure each case gets the same level of care and attention. Implement quality control checks at each stage of production, from initial impressions to the final product. Designate team members to oversee these checks to catch errors before they reach the client.
Automation can also help maintain consistency. Many dental labs are turning to digital systems that reduce human error and standardize production. While this doesn’t
replace skilled technicians, it can serve as an extra layer of precision.
3. Managing Turnaround Times and Meeting Deadlines
Dentists rely on timely delivery from their lab partners. Delays can lead to rescheduled patient appointments, frustrated dentists, and, ultimately, loss of business. However, with increasing workloads and unexpected hiccups, maintaining fast turnaround times is easier said than done.
What to Do About It: Streamline Communication and Planning
One of the best ways to ensure smooth operations is by streamlining communication with the dental practices you work with. Use project management tools or client portals that provide real-time updates on case statuses. Clear communication about deadlines can help manage expectations and minimize the risk of surprise delays.
Internally, focus on better scheduling. Anticipate bottlenecks and allow for buffer times in your workflow to accommodate emergencies or larger, more complicated cases. A solid workflow management system will help ensure that deadlines are met without sacrificing quality.
MANAGEMENT TIPS
4. Balancing Costs and Pricing
The dental lab business is fiercely competitive. Many labs struggle with finding the right balance between offering competitive pricing and maintaining profitability. With the rising costs of materials, equipment, and labour, it can be challenging to keep prices low while still making a profit.
What to Do About It: Focus on Value, Not Just Price
Instead of competing solely on price, position your lab as offering superior value. Highlight your lab’s quality, reliability, and customer service. Dentists will pay a premium for work that consistently meets or exceeds their expectations, especially when remakes are less frequent. Sales training (such as we, The Art of Management Inc., offer) can save you millions of lost income
waste that can be eliminated to improve margins without sacrificing quality.
5. Finding and Retaining Skilled Technicians
The dental lab industry is facing a shortage of skilled technicians, and this talent gap poses a significant challenge to lab owners. Finding qualified technicians who can handle the increasing demands of modern dentistry is becoming more difficult.
What to Do About It: Prioritize Training and Build a Strong Culture
If hiring experienced technicians is a challenge, consider investing in training for less-experienced hires. Create a mentorship program where senior technicians can pass on their knowledge to newer team members. This approach not only helps
and a sense of community can go a long way in retaining top talent. (Again, The Art of Management can train you as an executive and CEO to elevate your lab to higher ranges.)
Conclusion
By focusing on solutions rather than obstacles, dental labs can turn these hurdles into opportunities for growth and innovation. Just remember, the future of your dental lab doesn’t rest solely on the tools you buy but on the team you build and the processes you create to deliver exceptional work. Staying agile and proactive in addressing these common issues will help your lab thrive in an increasingly competitive industry.

CANDULOR has been offering high-quality materials for dental technology needs since 1936. In particular, the Swiss manufacturer is known for its esthetically sophisticated tooth lines and high-quality resins, especially the shade 34. The product system can fabricate restorations that resemble a natural dentition very closely, thus giving patients a high quality of life. CANDULOR also regards itself as a prosthetics specialist committed to transferring knowledge in partnership with laboratories and practices. The Swiss School of Prosthetics by CANDULOR (SSOP) was founded on this fundamental value, with which the Swiss company aims to bring sound specialist knowledge and practical know-how to dental laboratories and practices worldwide to increase quality and efficiency.
An Interesting Niche for Dental Laboratories
Full dentures are a very demanding discipline within the dental world. They are often underestimated due to a lack of knowledge or a mainstream orientation. Nonetheless, this field promises to be an interesting niche with great potential, provided the relevant expertise is available.
On this topic, CANDULOR offers dental laboratories and denturists a comprehensive prosthetic system for partial, full, and implantsupported patient restorations, including tooth lines, denture resins, auxiliary materials, and dental equipment for registration and articulation.
Since 2023, the manufacturer of system prosthetics has also included disks for the digital and hybrid workflow in its range.
CANDULOR:
The Personal Prosthetics
Specialists from Switzerland
Thibaut Van den Bossche (Country Development Manager Europe and North America at CANDULOR) views the developments in the market as follows, “It is not only in the North American market that we are seeing conventional working methods increasingly being superseded by digital technologies. Everyone is curious and evaluating, but few dare to switch completely. We often see that the conventional and the digital have their place side by side in the laboratories. Owing to CANDULOR’s comprehensive range, we always offer dental laboratories the right material, regardless of which stage of the digitization process they are.”
Prosthetic Solutions with High Standards for Natural Beauty
The foundation stone for this was laid over 80 years ago, when entrepreneur Alfred Wilhelm Steen and tooth engraver Wilhelm Karl Zech founded the Steen & Zech Zahnfabrik in the heart of Zurich, Switzerland, on November 1, 1936. In only a short space of time, the company became one of the most renowned manufacturers of teeth in Central Europe. In the post-war period, up to 300 employees were at times involved in the success.
An important contributing factor was the revolutionary and highend Swiss quality, which has since manifested itself in a large number of successful tooth shapes and materials. After Wilhelm Karl Zech sold his shares to his partner, the company was renamed CANDULOR AG in the 1960s. The high demands we place on ourselves, and the quest for naturalness resulted in a legend for the brand. To replicate the gingiva as realistically as possible, special semi-opaque stains of the resins were developed for the first time, which refract and reflect incident light so that even artificial gums appear in their natural pink tones. The introduction of the AESTHETIC resins heralded the creation of the legendary shade 34 and today’s AESTHETIC Colour Set Easy for characterizing the gingiva.
Understanding Customer Needs and Processes
Then as now, close customer relationships remain the focus of this manufacturer’s business partnerships. This is reflected by flat hierarchies, respectful interaction, advice, and solutions tailored to the individual customer. An in-depth understanding of individual customer needs is also key for sales consultants; as Thibaut Van den Bossche explains further, “The most important thing is that I know the customer’s processes and requirements in detail so that I can give them the best possible advice. Here, it is very important to us that we approach things in the laboratory with a high level of empathy – I am a dental technician and can, therefore, speak to our customers on an equal footing.”
Designing Individual Dentures
Working with a diverse range of products adds new dimensions to everyday laboratory routines. With its PhysioSet TCR tooth line, CANDULOR offers 48 tooth moulds, including 18 special X-moulds, with which highly individual prosthetic solutions can be realized. The PhysioSelect TCR tooth line primarily stands for tooth shapes in a fresh, youthful design, which perfectly reflects the lifestyle of the ‘Best Ager’ generation. Both tooth lines are made of highly resistant TwinCrossedResin material (modified PMMA variant) – a dental material for very high plaque and abrasion resistance* requirements. Both tooth lines are available in 16 A-D shades and 2 Bleach shades, whereas the PhysioSet TCR is additionally available in 9 CANDULOR shades.
A range with three disks is also offered for CAD/CAM-supported fabrication: the high-impact XPLEX material is available as a disk for the denture bases. Three denture shades are available (1, 5, and 34), which correspond to the shades of the existing XPLEX denture material. This allows the laboratory to choose the material that best
CAD/CAM materials to articulators and auxiliary materials. All materials – analog or digital – are compatible with each other and thus enable a consistent solution.”
Knowledge For Greater Success in Prosthetics
In times of digitization, different levels of know-how among employees pose particular challenges for dental laboratories, especially in the demanding discipline of full dentures. This is where the Swiss School of Prosthetics (SSOP) fills an important gap in the continuing education offering. Founded in Switzerland, the school

Articulator CA 3.0 LARGE –
Synchronization
he CANDULOR
Tsynchronization system is characterized by its high precision and allows the CA 3.0 LARGE articulator to be synchronized with the Artex®articulators.
This offers major advantages, particularly for collaboration in the laboratory or between the laboratory and practice, because synchronizing the articulators ensures:
• Greater efficiency and cost-effectiveness in the dental workflow.
• Simplification of work processes, as the models can be passed between the laboratory and practice without the articulator.
• Fewer sources of error because synchronizing the articulators can help avoid transcription errors. For more information, please visit https://candulor.com/en/product-portfolio/ devices/articulators.

VITA Introduces the New VITA VACUMAT® 6100 M Furnace
VITA has announced the addition of the VITA VACUMAT® 6100 M to its line of tried and tested furnaces. The new VITA VACUMAT 6100 M is a fully automatic, microprocessorcontrolled firing unit ideal for all dental firing ceramic requirements.
The optimized electronics enable even more precise results, ensuring a consistently high quality of dental work and increased laboratory efficiency. The simple operation, the preinstalled programs, and the spacesaving design have all been retained. The new furnace impresses with superb quality and aesthetics and offers outstanding firing results, user safety, and convenience. Thanks to its ergonomically optimized design, the furnace requires only a minimal footprint. Two integrated cooling trays support the safe storage of fired objects.
Innovative new materials are used in the VITA VACUMAT 6100 M combustion chamber to ensure even more homogeneous heat distribution. A durable firing muffle and reliable electronics provide consistently excellent firing results. The furnace also offers a wide range of monitoring and service programs – automatic temperature
adjustment before every start, temperature and vacuum control and a counter for operating hours of firing muffles – that maximize working comfort, safety, and efficiency. A new feature, the linear cooling with simulation of the object temperature, ensures safe and precise firing results by providing even and controlled cooling.
VITA is a leading provider of innovative dental products. The company pioneered tooth shade determination with the development of the world-renowned
VITA classical A1-D4® shade guide and its proprietary VITA SYSTEM 3D-MASTER®, the first and only system of its kind to cover the complete range of natural tooth shades. From premium denture teeth and veneering materials to digital shade measurement, furnaces, and CAD/CAM restorations, VITA helps laboratory technicians and clinicians deliver high-quality, esthetic results to patients quickly and efficiently.
