I can’t believe this is the ninth year we have had the privilege of putting on the Western Exposure. It is always a lot of work, beginning in April, and especially during the fall to get everything ready. I truly look forward to every second I get to spend in Iowa. I honestly think of Iowa, and the people I deal with out there, as my second home and family. I greatly enjoy and appreciate the friendships I have been able to develop during my time in God’s country. I truly believe we have improved the cattle every year and one will truly be impressed with the quality from top to bottom. Our philosophy is rather simple around here: we focus on raising cattle that are versatile for all markets. I don’t think you ever want to chase one trait or one market. Eventually, the winds will shift and one will be left standing at the altar of a dead market. We strive to market a female that can be bred multiple ways and click mated to many different sires. Out here, in the Wild West, it takes a different animal to survive. One can’t understand until they have seen the country were we run our cattle. Not only do they have to raise a marketable calf, the cattle have to deal with predators, fires, drought and work hard to find grass at times; the majority of these females were raised in these conditions and know how to survive. I truly believe that is why they are received so well in the Midwest. These cattle know how to clock in and clock out everyday! Nothing pleases us more then to see the cattle working for our customers. Feel free to call whenever to talk about cattle. I am proud of this group. No, they aren’t fluffed up, super clean, and clipped for a show, but they are honest. They have never had a bath and trust that policy won’t be changing around here. We don’t have time to baby these things. They are in their working clothes and ready to go to work. They will only look better once they make it to their new home. Thank you for the interest and we look forward to see everyone in Dunlap on January 8th.
- Trevor Roche
This is as a powerful set of bred females as I have ever brought to the EXPOSURE. You have to own the factory to raise these sought after calves come September sale time. There are several donor prospects backed by some powerful cows. Last year Peter Frijters of Canada purchased my Purebred Angus, bred heifer and he sold her heifer calf at the Agribition for $17,000. John Peterson purchased one of my Commercial bred heifers back in 2018 and she raised a Here I Am heifer that sold in October for $14,000, and was just selected Champion Market Heifer, in both rings, at the sneak a peak in Nebraska. Don’t hesitate to call if you can’t make it to the sale, I will put you in contact with someone to give you a second opinion. See ya Saturday January 8th in DUNLAP, IOWA!

Due Date: 2/20
I like to start off the sale every year with a really good Simmental. Last year’s was out of lot one’s grandmother and was purchased for half interest by David Faber. This female has had maternal sisters bring from $5,000 to $20,000. Her Meyer donor mother has done an exceptional job for us in Idaho. She is by far one of our most profitable cows. She emulates everything Meyer is known for: maternal traits, fertility, longevity, and real world functionality. Lot one has sisters that are currently donors at progressive herds like Bob May’s, Ward Eckloff’s, Scott Jorgensen’s and Dave Faber’s. There is great consistency here that can only be found in that great Meyer donor. Fortune has done an exceptional job as well with the typical classy Hartman sire look, but in a slightly easier calving package. Clean by pedigree.

Now, granted, Adam, AKA pre-diabetic Scott Frost, does not look like the sharpest tool in the shed, he has got some great stock and does an exceptional job with them. There’s a good chance he will be fighting you for this one. The females out of the 361 donor cow have done great things. Most have paid for themselves in their first shot! 361 is about to have a “late fall” baby, AKA a February 13th calf, and then she will enter IVF production. Buy this female and get a little taste of what its like to start with a solid foundation. The options will be limitless. Clean by pedigree.

Every year I try to bring in some outside genetics that have been ringing the bell. I was lucky enough last year to acquire two daughters of the great Emmerson cow from Luekings in Nebraska, including this full sib to Rodger’s One of a Kind (1OAK). There is no doubt in my mind now why she has been such a profitable cow for them. This Emmerson daughter is exceptional from every angle. She has a great build and look while at the same time being functional and productive. She will sell in her entirety, but I would love you keep a piece of this one if anyone is interested. We need to dial the belly back and add muscle. Emmerson definitely stamped her influence on this female with the added punch and power she demonstrates. You’re buying some proven genetics here! THF

The cattle market is such a confused industry. We have JBS and Cargill investing millions into the fake meat programs. The big packers own 10 times the number of cattle they are supposed to, thus manipulating all cash markets. All the while we sit around the table complaining about it, yet continue to send money to the local cattlemen associations that in return send us a bumper sticker that says “Eat Beef”. I’m afraid that we will all soon be working for one of the big boys and talk about the good old days when we used to be able to determine our own destiny. These issues need addressed loudly and ferociously. There have been attempts in Washington to change the status quo, but with every senator that needs a donation this issue is quickly brushed aside and forgotten. This heifer is the epitome of what the industry needs and wants. Performance, looks, genetics and the perfect baldy face. No such thing as a bad baldy-faced cow! Speaking of Fauci, he’s about as wishy-washy as the cattle judge that stresses soundness, but picks a cripple as Champion. When you see or hear the name Duke one instantly thinks of the ultimate boss man John Wayne. There’s no greater movie than the Cowboys, and he is the epitome of americana. Unfortunately, my Duke bull was a one-nutter with about as much libido as a 82-year old eunuch. Duke got beat up really badly as a yearling by some older bulls, and never got his groove back. What we have bred him to has really clicked. He always adds tons of power, volume, and mass. I have never had one that wasn’t sound, and they have all milked exceptionally well. Once we completed clipping and torChing, and we were about to finalize the catalog, I had briefly thought I had either lost or my laptop was stolen. But I would like to know what it feels like to sell half million dollar paintings like golden Child Hunter does. What a world we live in today! Catalogs, clipping, pictures, all of it, is a lot of work, but it’s all worth it when they look like this. I love this female. She is bred to the hills and comes from proven genetics on the bottom side. She also took what I consider the best picture I have ever taken. I don’t know if I will ever outdo my effort, but I am far from professional. The one thing I still can’t master as a livestock photographer is how do the professionals make the cattle lean forward on their front legs? Ever noticed that? It makes their front ends look awesome, but I just can’t convince my cows to lean forward like Jack and Rose did over the front of the Titanic. A few tips would be greatly appreciated!Clean by pedigree.

It looks like Matt Campbell is going to stay in Iowa. I think I have lost $100 bet every year to Jon Schaben because I always thought he would be moving on to greener pastures. But it looks like he is going to stand the test of time, much like this pedigree has stood the test of time. It’s hard to find these old school pedigrees anymore but when you do, gobble them up because there’s a reason they’re still around. Dr. Who has done as much as any maternal club calf bull on the market, in my eyes. There’s still a ton of influence from him in the most progressive, top cowherds, and I don’t see anybody phasing it out, other than through age. I mated this Angus cow to Dr. Who strictly begging for heifers and after five bulls I finally got a heifer! She will be a phenomenal asset and addition to anybody’s spread Clean by pedigree.

This pedigree is a lot like the Nebraska football team, extremely relevant and hot in the mid-90s, but irrelevant today. Nebraska football had its Glory Day, even though they are celebrating a 3-9 year. This pedigree has lived on for the ages. These old school pedigree cows seem to click and work no matter what they are bred to. Retire the 16-year-old, Full Flush cow and replace her with this beauty. Clean by pedigree.

I’m afraid Nebraska football has become the Uncle Rico of college football. When all you can do is talk about how good you were in the 90s, you have some serious issues that need addressed. The show cattle industry has some serious issues that need addressed, and one of them is finances. I was able to acquire this female because one of our fellow “starched pants and shirts” type was unable to pay for her. I was lucky enough to catch the owner at a weak moment when all he wanted was a check, so I gladly wrote him a good one. Not one that he could hold like how we used to hold on to the Monopoly stickers from McDonald’s hoping that maybe somehow we would fill the board and win the million dollars, which never happened. But an actual check he could take to the bank. One of these days all of the checks people are told to hold will be left holding them for a long time. Don’t be that person. If just a few would stand up, it could change overnight, and some stability would be appreciated by all of the hard-working producers. Southern boys, perk up, this one is your type.THF

If you’re ever in Carroll, Iowa, and you’re looking to pick a fight, I can point out one place you do not want to go. I think the Vonnahme family puts a Ralgro pellet in their ear every six months because they are some big, big boys. In fact, they halter break their calves by simply staring and intimidating them. They love shiny cattle trucks, the show Yellowstone, (which is a soap opera for men, and no, I don’t watch it), and raising good stock. This one is an impressive prospect to raise high Maines. Their program is really starting to take off and this female is a perfect example of why. Good stock! Clean by pedigree.

A lot of people ask me how long it takes to write these comments and honestly, it’s usually about a 2-hour drive. I turn my Gmail app on and start talk-totext. For the next 2 hours, I talk to my phone like there are voices in my head and I’m sure I look like a complete nut job to passers by. This female certainly did have me going crazy during picture day. I just could not get a good one of her. She is about as complete as they come and has an exceptional presence to her. She comes from one of the best donor cows on the place and I cannot say enough good about her mother. These are the types that have worked so well with Here I Am, and for that reason, we would like to reserve 2 successful flushes to HIA on her. Not tested.

Don’t you love it when a judge or breed rep gets on the mic at a show and tries to tell the audience what the industry needs when they themselves don’t even own a single animal? Nor do they eat and survive based on the productivity of their herd. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not against ALL the professional judges in the world. Some of them are extremely sharp, and understand all aspects of the industry, but the younger majority don’t have a clue. If you were to put a kill sheet in front of them it would be like me trying to understand nuclear physics. There are many things we need to look at and ask why. I recently hired a new guy that’s doing a great job. I was explaining to him how we want them to look and the obsession with whistle fronts. He asked me, “Why?” I didn’t have an answer, though usually I can make something up. This one really stumped me. I could only come up with the response, “It just looks cool, and there’s absolutely no reason for it.” I think that’s how we need to look at show cattle when compared to real-world cattle. They are not one in the same. The show ring currently does not relate to the real-world, and that is perfectly fine! Let’s just not try to tie the two together when they are two completely separate entities. This heifer is 100% show ring. She is whistle-fronted, massive haired, nice middled and could run up a pine tree with her feet and legs. Is any of that needed at the family ranch or in the feedlots of Nebraska? Probably not, but she is freaking awesome to look at and I’m okay with that. THC

This bred pulled a “Smollett” and beat herself up with a straw bale. She tried to say it was a hate crime from the Charolais heifers, but come to find out, it was all a hoax. If that doesn’t make any sense to you, start watChing the news. Actually, good for you for not watChing the news. You’re probably a lot happier and optimistic person than the rest of us news junkies. I do feel bad for Jesse Smollett. I hear he’s going to have to share a jail cell with his attacker. Poor guy. This is the first offering of a bred female out of Reactor, our purebred Angus bull. I think he does an exceptional job at stamping the cattle for today’s wants, needs and trends. They possess enough body without dismissing the need for natural thickness and bone. These Maker’s Mark females are the best kept secret in the Simmental breed. Eever heard that before when somebody is desperately trying to sell semen? Well, I am exactly that person. Desperate and trying to sell semen, but at least I have some proof in the pudding! This bull has done an exceptional job, and for what the Simmental breed is wanting to change within themselves, and what the show ring is demanding, this bull fits the bill. Super long-fronted and clean with a ton of middle and some mass. Progeny don’t get overly tall like the old school Simmentals, but they are moderate and extremely functional. Murl Dodds owns a piece of this bull and has had great luck at his own place. Feel free to hit me up and try this calf out. With a little bit of use from the right people, he will take off. I lived in Ecuador for two years the only English I ever heard was, “Hey you, mister,” and “full”. They used the term “full” to describe a lot. In the show cattle world, we use the word full to describe every steer jocks voicemail. That is if he even set it up! (I’m speaking to you, Daake.) I still do not understand that business model, nor will I ever, but for the sake of all dignity and hope in the world, can we please set up our voicemails and not act like we do business with burner phones? I think “full” should be the new term for females with a lot of volume and mass. That’s exactly what you find with this girl. She is stuffed full with product. It’s not just belly it’s from the tip of her nose to the tip of her tail. If this one doesn’t work to a Here I Am, or whatever club calf bull there is on the market today today, then I give up because she is the type that will click. Clean by pedigree.

I always show up to this sale the day before. Schaben always has a huge, preconditioned feeder sale that day. I always try to catch the tail end of it because they pass out candy bars to those that sat there all day. (Pretty smart to catch on to that, huh? I think so! While I was gnawing down my Almond Joy, the singles started walking into the ring. And wouldn’t you know it, in walks two of the fuzziest creatures that day. The second they walked in Jon and I were like Stockton to Malone. He immediately looked up in my direction and I could exactly read his mind. “You are the only one dumb enough in this arena to buy these two so lift your hand up,” and that’s exactly what I did. I purchased lot 73 & 74 right out of the sale ring. Not knowing what they were, but knowing they had a really cool look, and there was certainly no bib wearing, Iowa farmer that was going to give more than $0.62 a pound for them. Well, every once in a while these dumb ideas of mine work, and this one worked really well. This black female is as good as we will ever bring to town. She is massive boned, yet soft-footed with a ton of hair, middle, square hip, front end that goes on for days, and she’s the right size. If I had a pedigree to this thing, she would bring a fortune, but I don’t. All I have is my close out Ruby gave me after the feeder sale. You can make her what you want, but whatever you do, make sure you let everyone know she came from me because this one makes me proud. Everyone knows I think a Hereford is about as useful as a polled Longhorn, but with that being said, they are still in demand, and this is a pretty darn good one. Her sire is one of the coolest looking Hereford bulls I’ve ever seen, and she certainly does not disappoint. Sound at the ground but not too shallow heeled like a lot of Hereford cattle can get. She is powerful from behind and long fronted while still having a lot of body and volume. Keep her purebred or cross her up she will probably click either way. Clean by pedigree.

Ronnie Milsap could shotgun a case of beer, spin around 10 times on a baseball bat, put a blindfold on, and still find this beast among her great counterparts. This is by far the best creature I have ever brought to town. This spring we had the opportunity to buy the entire cow herd from Keith Stafford. As we all know, Keith had a great run with many high sellers and State Fair champions. He ran his cows a lot harder than most and they have thrived in Idaho. I wanted to bring a taste to the sale this year, but I think we brought the Bellagio buffet with this specimen. She is amazing from every angle. To find a 6 year old cow with this power, bone and hair yet still possessing a rocket front end is remarkable. She has been IVF flushed once this summer with great results. I can only see blue sky and dollar signs ahead of her. She tested TH FREE to boot! This is by far the best white female I have ever seen, and I promise you’ll be impressed when you enter her presence. THF SELLING HALF INTEREST - POSSESSION IS NEGOTIABLE.

Gentleman, take your hats off when lot 116 enters because we have a lady in our presence. She is an absolute beautiful creature. Soft, sound, stout with a perfectly balanced front end and a beautiful head that ties into the perfect neck placement coming high out of her shoulders. I actually sold half of her in the sale last year, but due to a divorce and a good friend of mine being forced to liquidate his cows, we thought it would be more profitable for him to rerack her. We are selling her in her entirety, but I would love to keep a piece of her if somebody would like to just buy half. I have flushed her, and she stimulates above average both via IVF and conventional. The high Maine calf trade is hotter than Baldwin’s gun barrel. Don’t get left behind. Raising club calves is kind of like Nebraska football. You can have a 1 and 8 season and feel like you are moving the right direction. Clubbies are a lot the same. You can have three outstanding calves in May, and by September they are cripples, and you were that close to raising the next great one. Soundness is the pivotal first step to raising quality and consistency with show stock. It doesn’t matter how good they look if they can’t move, and this female certainly will not bring any structural issues to the table when deciding what to breed her to. She is sound big-footed and can move. The red hair coat doesn’t hurt either. THF

This goose-fronted, high Maine came from Aaron Broz by North Platte, Nebraska. I bought her out of Les Vogler’s pasture sale. I was able to purchase two maternal sisters. The first was a Thriller daughter that I sold half interest to Jake and Terry Campbell. She currently has a ripping good, Here I Am, holdover steer, and is in embryo production. This Mercedes-Benz daughter out of the great Broz Sooner donor cow is a lot like her maternal sister. Extremely sexy fronted with a square hip and power. It seems like they have been trying to take the power out of the Maines and add belly, which was certainly needed, but like all things, the show ring has taken it too far. This cow is the perfect in between. Power belly and front. THF

The poor lady has become famous for all the wrong reasons. This Brilliance female is the epitome of perfection for a club calf female. She is bred right with a great look and extremely maternal. Her heifer calf this year is a keeper and I guarantee I will get a repeat customer out of the lucky new owner to this great one. THF PAGE 42 • WESTERN EXPOSURE

In the cattle world we are continually trying to progress toward a better animal. In our modern world progress is watChing Lia Thomas (a dude) crush all the women’s swimming records at the University of Pennsylvania. Maybe the cattle world should take a page out of the modern-day’s book of progress. Can you imagine? We already have a hard enough time getting bulls to make freezable semen. Those stud operators would really have to work some magic to get that butch, no-milking cow to freeze. When I think of the term progress, I think a synonym would be to improve, and I don’t know if the world is on the right track, I do know the cattle industry is, especially the Maine breed. They are trying to improve and progress at a rapid rate, and this female is an example of that. The Maines have lowered birth weights, increased milk production, and greatly increased efficiency if you ask me. Some of the old school Maines were the prettiest animals to look at, but they needed all the corn in Nebraska, plus Iowa, to stay in good rig. This female by Driving 80 is exactly where the Maine breed is going. Functional, productive cattle. THF

I have a felt hat, which was really hard to find because I have a head the size of an elephant. I wear a tie with a button-up shirt and ostrich boots. I look the part even though I have no clue what I’m doing. I probably sound like a cat being electrocuted while giving birth to a bowling ball, but hey I’m still better than Epperly. Yes this is a 10-year-old cow, but she is a great one. I jumped into the Red Angus game with this one and she has done a great job. She raised three heifers that we have sold in Dunlap with a $7,000 average, not including a daughter and granddaughter we are using to replace her as our lead donor. If you want a fast entry into the Red Angus show heifer market tie into this momma. She flushes extremely well and has never struck out. Clean by pedigree.

I’m not going to lie, but this female was in my recipient herd. When we were ultrasounding she was in heat so I said, “What the heck, might as well try.” I threw some semen in her, and boom, she stuck. Now don’t expect every recip from our program to look like this one, but she is really, really nice. If this one doesn’t look like a mother, we will agree to disagree. Clean by pedigree.

PAST BEAR HUNT WINNERS: 2017 - Stoltz Exotics - Nebraska 2017 - Doug Hansen - Iowa 2018 - Kevin Fisher - Ohio 2019 - Brian Little - Oklahoma 2020 - Brian Little - Oklahoma 2021 - Jess Shirley - Texas
First of all, I want to thank Trevor for this bear hunt. We went to North Central Idaho with Jay Roche and two other guides. Between their stories - some true, and some I’m not so sure about - and the scenic country, it was quite the experience! Trevor calls it “God’s Country,” but I’m not sure about that. We hunted with dogs that had GPS collars, across creeks, rocks, trees, snow and other obstacles. At one point, the bear was 12 miles away from us and circled back and ended up 1.2 miles away. The dogs tree’d him, thank heavens, because I wasn’t sure if I wanted to walk 12 miles in the mountains to shoot him. The hospitality Jay showed us was second to none. Besides wrecking two four-wheelers and tearing the front end out of one pick-up, everyone came back in one piece with lots of pictures and stories. I could go on and on about this hunting trip, but Trevor said to keep it short! Thanks again, Trevor, for one hell of an adventure. - John Stoltz PAGE 60 • WESTERN EXPOSURE

We have decided to take our embryo service to the next level. With the recent construction of our own IVF center, we are now able to offer in-house donor housing and ALL IVF services. We have increased our recipient numbers and are ready to help all producers maximize the most PROFITABLE animals.
The Numbers Matter Daily Maintance Fee/Donor - $5 IVF Collection - $800 ($250 minimum cost for FSH/Shots) $0 Cost of embryo placement
$0 Cost of shipping fresh embryos to & from lab $0 Cost of recipient synchronization $0 Cost of freight for Donors $0 Cost of freight for Recipients
Recipients
Mostly black, 3–5-year-old cows of western origin. Recipients will ship 6+ months bred. Disposition will be closely monitored.
$500/hd deposit required once pregnancy is confirmed and the remainder due 1 month before shipment. 2022 price will begin at $2,600 for the first 20 customers and then increase to 2,700.
Ideal Situation
Producer will send donors to WE Tec for at least 2 IVF sessions. (We will assist with all freight)
All embryos will be placed fresh – eliminating freezing cost and maximizing LIVE CALVES per flush - live calves is the number that matters!
For far to long the IVF process has only been profitable for those performing the service. Low conception rates, late term abortions, and low egg count has hindered countless producers. Allow WE Tec to gain your business by providing a profitable experience for all parties involved.
We will have a truck in Dunlap January 8th, to haul donors for FREE. Do not miss the opportunity!
