position statement

project concept

to connect the community of benson through a market hall that recognizes the benefits of:

urban oasis uses nature and vegetation to provide an escape to users from everyday life in benson. on-site growing beds allow vendors to oversee the growth/sale of fresh produce while simultaneously connecting with the users who are enjoying their product and the environment. the greenhouse inspired building is equipped with a rain drain to capture and recycle water for irrigation use, minimizing its energy consumption.

the site is located within the NBD neighborhood business district, an area that was once a commercial core of a town and eventually annexed. the zoning district allows for the historical physical elements of the site and new developments to be constructed, encouraging mixeduse buildings. The flexibility of zoning codes provides various permitted uses within residential, civic, office, and commercial programs. permitted uses include but are not limited to food sales, liquor sales, restaurant, and cocktail lounge, providing the ability to construct a food market within the site.

the main structural component of our building is made of reinforced precast concrete cubes. these cubes allow for tall vertical stacking while still maintaining l a t e r a l s t r u c t u r a l i n t e g r i t y. t h e 5 ’ modular panels have aperatures within to house electrical, plumbing, etc.
