Intensive farming operation requires high output machinery

Home Farm Nacton in Suffolk uses the 5.6m Major Cyclone to enhance overall field performance and maintain soil health for its intensive cropping operation.

“We are custodians of this valuable farming land and it’s incumbent on us to ensure we maintain the health, the productivity and the environmental status of the soil,” says Andrew Williams, farm manager at Home Farm Nacton Ltd near Ipswich in Suffolk.

Maintaining soil health ensures the land remains productive throughout the year. “We grow lots of cover crops,” Andrew explains. “We sometimes use sheep to graze after harvesting field produce and regularly mow grass, clover and stubbles to recycle valuable green manures.”

Recycling crop residue and green manure requires intensive mowing practices. The farm relied on flail mowers for stubble management but the machines required high fuel consumption and maintenance costs. The flails were also unreliable and delivered a poor finish.

“We took a look at the Major Cyclone and were really impressed with the build quality and the low power requirement,” enthuses Andrew. “The direct drive transmission meant doing away with belts.”

Chandlers RFM JCB expands territory into Cotswolds

JCB and Chandlers FE Ltd have confirmed that the Chandlers RFM JCB business will expand to the Cotswold region on 1 December 2023.

The expansion includes a JCB depot in Cirencester for the Cotswold region, in addition to the Chandlers depots in Raglan for Monmouthshire, Ross-on-wye in Herefordshire and Martley in Worcestershire.

Chandlers Cirencester and Martley branches will become JCB specialist hubs for managing sales, service and spare parts.

“The team is available and ready to use their years of JCB experience at Ross Farm Machinery in the Cotswolds,” said Paddy Kennedy, JCB manager at Chandlers RFM JCB said. “The region is a natural fit for the business, plus the continuity and experience of the staff here at Chandlers RFM JCB will ensure professional and prompt support for all JCB customers.”

A PILOT project has been launched to help support the growth of Devon’s agricultural industry.

The show’s organisers have said they are delighted to welcome back Livestock Classes this year. These will be taking place in the Sheep Ring, Cattle Ring and Pig Ring; and visitors will also be able to see the livestock lines at close range.

The £500,000 Devon County Council scheme, named the DATA (Devon Agri-Tech Accelerator) project, is aiming to provide support and research for farmers, growers, landowners, and other agricultural and agritech businesses to develop innovations that will help build a sustainable farming community in the county.

Away from larger animals, Great British Dogs returns for a fourth year. This popular exhibit is located near the Woodland & Countryside Arena, and showcases rare British dog breeds. The dogs will show off their skills in the Main Ring when Pawsability Dog Agility put their pooches through their paces; and there is also a dog agility course in the Woodland & Countryside Arena.

Other aspects of the scheme will involve looking at ways of reducing Devon’s carbon footprint, enhancing farm productivity, supporting the local economy and growing the agriculture and the agri-tech business sector.

The combined efforts of Devon County Council, Business Information Point, Duchy College Rural Business School, and the University of Plymouth will add momentum to the project that will cover four key areas.

Equine fans will have plenty of opportunities to watch competitions, including show jumping (taking place in the Main Ring on all three days); Scurry (also taking place in the Main Ring); the Pony Club Games (heats in the Pony Club Games ring, finals in the Main Ring); and Heavy Horses (located on Avenue A, with turnout displays in the Main Ring).

Councillor Rufus Gilbert, Devon County Council cabinet member for economic recovery and skills, said: “A flourishing farming industry is vital for our rural communities, and it underpins the region’s food and drink sector which is so important for our local economy. Through research and support, this project is aiming to ensure that agriculture in Devon can benefit from the use of technology, with farming and agri-tech communities working closely together.

“We’re looking for farm businesses, specifically in West Devon and Torridge, to take part in the farm innovation pilot of the project.

Finally, the Vintage Machinery display allows visitors to step back in time and see the range of tractors which worked on farms as mechanisation became more commonplace. There will also be a display of commercial vehicles which transported goods, alongside the stationery or ‘barn’ engines which powered the farm to drive milking parlours and water pumps.
