WELL PROVEN TRACTORS MAKE SOUND USED BUY

In 2012, Massey Ferguson introduced the 7600 series, these tractors making way for the 7700 models in 2016, the 7700S in 2018 and the 7S in late 2021. Here we consider the 2.88m wheelbase 7700, 7700S and 7S models, these 6.6 litre six-cylinder tractors now spanning a nominal 150hp to 210hp.

7718 DYNA-6 40KPH ESSENTIAL MASSEY FERGUSON

Tractor manufacturers can make life a little bit difficult for those less than familiar with a given model line-up. Massey Ferguson had essentially moved its 7600 ‘mid-range’ six-cylinder tractors into one series and, like some of its competitors, the range included both ‘short’ 2.88m and ‘long’ 3.0m wheelbase models powered by 6.6 litre or 7.4 litre engines.

This confusing mix was carried over to the nine model 7700 range, simplification arriving with the four-model 155hp to 190hp 7700 S series. These are all 2.88m wheelbase, 6.6 litre tractors and it is models in this category we consider here.

To avoid tripping up when considering a used buy, note the nominal 185hp 6.6 litre 7719 has a 3.0m wheelbase, the later 190hp 7719 S the shorter 2.88m. Power outputs among the 7700 to 7S have also altered. The current 6.6 litre 7S.210 is rated at 210hp, this matching the maximum boosted output of the 7719 S and 7S.190.

In line with the steady evolution theme hinted at in the title of the article, the 7600

series set the template for the 7700, 7700 S and 7S models. Apart from the different model offerings and cosmetic changes, a key marker between these tractors is that the 7600 series meet Stage IIIB emission standards, the 2016-2018 7700 series meeting Stage IV with the late 2018-2021 7700S moving to Stage V power units. The current 7S series launched for 2021 also meet Stage V with tweaks to boost power (see power output table).

As will be clear from the tables, a guide to the models ‘rated’ maximum power will be indicated by the bonnet decal and not the ‘boosted’ EPM engine power management output. Stage V engines in the 7700 S and subsequent 7S model series have the same pro-rata outputs. The exception is that the 7S.210 will deliver the equivalent power of a 7S.190 in ‘boosted’ EPM power in all applications. As it sells for a relatively modest premium over the 7S.190, the 7S.210 has become a strong seller. It looks set to be a popular buy when used models start to become available.

TRANSMISSION

The lower powered variants of the 7700 and 7700S were offered with a 16x16 Dyna-4 semi-powershift transmission, the 165hp plus models coming with a 24x24 Dyna-6 as standard or Dyna-VT stepless CVT. The latter is fitted to the and 7S.190 and 7S.210 as standard.

The Dyna-6 transmission remains a popular choice on all variants, offering 24 forward and reverse gears with nine in the critical 4kph to 12kph working speed range. Top speeds are up 50kph, with 40kph Eco (and Super Eco on the 7719 / 7719S) as standard.

A dealer workshop software tweak may be available to restore the transmission speed to 50kph on a tractor that was subsequently reduced to a 40kph maximum to suit some customers. Check with a dealer as most models were sold with 50kph capability but do not make any assumptions.

<< Dyna-VT transmissions are AGCO ML180 Vario units. Although this transmission is shared with some Fendt tractor models, Massey Ferguson Dyna-VT control software is different. A key MF feature is the Supervisor system that essentially takes over the control of the transmission if the load on the engine increases beyond a fixed point, reducing the forward speed to retain full engine power in pto, field and transport modes.

The control software has received numerous tweaks but all Dyna-VT models offer a high standard of automation if required. With the 7S, the choice of operating modes and controls have been updated and modernised with improved integration with GPS guidance systems.

SPECIFICATION PACKS

What comes as standard within one of the core specification packages may vary not just between the 7700 through to 7S tractors but also regionally or by dealer, so check. In broad outline, there were originally three specification packs.

Essential: Remains favoured in certain livestock regions as the entry level package. Offered from 7600 through to current models but is increasingly rarely specified. In outline an Essential spec tractor has no armrest controls or provision for features such as a Datatronic display and guidance and will have mechanical hydraulics.

Efficient: An Efficient specification cab comes with a Command Control Armrest that can be specified with a popular multifunction joystick option in place of the standard T shaped transmission control. Up to four rear remote valves can be fitted with a mix of two mechanically and two electronically controlled.

At the rear, check the linkage for play, and take a good look at the valves, leaks having proven a problem mainly on tractors with electronic spools. Also look for an ISO coupling, a vital extra if you need it. As with all tractor models, there will be a wide range of tyre sizes fitted to used models, but most common are 480/70R28 front and 580/70R38 rear, 480/70R30 and 620/70R42 or 480/85/R28 and 520/85R38. Note rear mudguard extensions. These are options.

WHAT’S USED

Conventional manually controlled air conditioning plus mechanical cab and Quadlink front axle suspension are standard, but all options are available as an upgrade. It is common to find an Efficient spec tractor with climate control or an upgraded seat. Do not rely on the package outline for full specification info.

Exclusive: A number of options offered with the Efficient pack are included as standard with the Exclusive spec package. These include automatic climate control and, on the 7700, a Datatronic 4 display with camera and ISOBUS provision. The latter was changed to the Datatronic 5 touchscreen on the 7700 S. Other features include a Multipad joystick with additional controls, heated and electronically adjusting mirrors plus enhanced automated features to include Headland Management Systems. Four electronic spool valves are fitted.

As a used buyer you will obviously only get what was specified originally but if you do want certain features, make a list and check if a buy you are considering has them fitted. A key ask is to find out if the tractor is, or can be, fitted with guidance and if it offers full ISOBUS control. Later tractors tend to have a better specification but not all. Further, 7S tractors can be fitted with a larger dual monitor set-up that allows easy separation between guidance and implement control via the tractor. >>

7718 and 7718S models will have been offered with a 3,200kg capacity front linkage or 4,000kg alternative as pictured. Where specified, the latter will be fitted to 7719S models. A front pto is a further option.

7700 S NEXT EDITION

As outlined separately, the key spec packs to consider are Efficient and Exclusive. The 7700S was also offered in limited numbers with a further enhanced package, Next. These models may be finished in black, but not always. Added features include:

• Heavy duty 4,000kg front linkage with dedicated front valve control

• SpeedSteer

• Auto-Guide ready, including second Fieldstar 5 touch-screen terminal

• Wider rear fenders with extensions

• Up to 16 LED work and road lights

• 540/65R28 front and 650/65R38 rear tyres

By current standards, the dash on these models (black trim for the 7S) may look somewhat dated but it is clear and shows key data to include rpm, fuel level, hours and interval to next service.

A panel in the cab ‘B’ pillar houses the work light and beacon controls, pto speed selector and electronic rear linkage settings.

Models prior to the 7S have the same slim spoke steering wheel, the latest models a revised design with black spokes on Essentail and silver on the Exclusive.

DIFFERENCES BETWEEN 7700, 7700 S AND 7S MODELS

Park a 7700 series next to a late 7600, and they look pretty much the same. The 7700 S changed to a revised bonnet with extra side grills and more angular lights, the 7S adopting much the same bonnet profile but with different grills and silver highlights, a black cab frame and square LED cab roof lights where specified. The exhaust stack on the 7700 S and 7S is slimmer than on a 7700 but with a larger lower section.

In the cab, 7700 S models moved from the ‘oval’ shaped Datavision 4 screen to the square Datavision 5, the 7S having the option to fit two of the latter to separate ISOBUS and guidance views. The controls of the 7S have also been updated, with wider seat options to include an active variant that offers enhanced comfort. Although the cab architecture has not changed from the 7600 series, the current 7S is up to standard albeit with less room inside than some competitors. It is relatively quiet, which is a plus.

Under the skin, there are detail differences between the various models but as with so many items of equipment various components will also be altered to match changes in supplier or developments. The key

consideration should be the ease of fitting a guidance system if needed as it can be expensive if the tractor is not pre-wired to accept any add-on system.

CHECKS BEFORE VIEWING

Before even looking at available tractors, work out the power and specification of the tractor you need and then seek out details to include condition, hours, service history, available warranty and price. If buying outside the AGCO dealer network, it pays to contact the supplying dealer and/or your local Massey Ferguson dealer for any service data they may have.

Modern tractors, regardless of make or model, will benefit from main dealer attention, particularly with regards to the electronics and control software. The latter are subject updates. It can be worth factoring in the cost of having a non-main dealer sourced tractor checked over, so why not find out? Although it follows that later 7700 S models are more likely to be offered for sale through a Massey Ferguson dealer, this is not always the case.

The standard warranty for these models would have been one year/1,500 hours, with paid upgrades to five years/6,000 hours as an option. All would be conditional upon dealer

WHAT’S USED

Efficient spec tractors typically come with two-mechanical and two-electric valve controls, with the transmission and other functions worked from the armrest.

Exclusive spec adds a multifunction joystick with a second loader joystick as an option. The latter will come on tractors supplied with a factory fit MF900 front loader. Note Datatronic 4 screen. This is fitted to models prior to the 7S.

servicing at 500 hours or 600 hours for later models.

A tractor sold by the supplying dealer and with a known history will make the most secure used buy. As to service costs, allow £2/hr for main dealer servicing and you will be in the right ballpark. If your purchase is being financed, ask if you can factor in servicing into the buying deal and check if a more recent tractor can have its warranty extended.

As is always the case, those buying on finance need to compare the true cost of buying a late used model with any offers that may be available for a new tractor. The latter will come with the benefit of a factory warranty, the latest specification, and other advantages to include new tyres. A few hours invested in looking at cost of ownership, as opposed to just the cost to buy, is never wasted. >>

CHASSIS AND HYDRAULICS

WHAT’S USED

WHAT TO LOOK FOR

There are no specific areas to check but some Dyna-6 transmissions can develop problems with the synchro between gears 3 to 4. This can be caused by the operator repeatedly taking off in too a high a gear with a heavy load in tow. The four-wheel drive clutch can also fail following repeated extensive heavy braking from speed with a big load.

Leaking spool valves can also be a problem, so take a good look at these as replacements are not cheap.

Dyna-VT transmissions should not give trouble at even high hours with the caveat that they do need to be serviced to schedule. Over the lives of these tractors, various software tweaks have been made. A tractor that has fallen out of the main dealer servicing routine may need attention. Some workshop time hitched up to a computer can resolve running and operating problems.

The odd electrical gremlin can cause headaches. Although typically related to sensors failing, the wiring, particularly if the latter has been damaged or worked upon to install extra lighting, can throw up errors due to poor connections. Modern wiring should be left well alone and not tampered with. On a test run, listen out for creaks and

CAB SUSPENSION PROBLEMS?

Although based upon the same principal as the system fitted to the 7600 series, both the mechanical and active mechanical cab suspension on 7700, 7700 S and 7S tractors was revised with softer spring and revised dampers (mechanical system left, active system right). The later design is more robust, gives a better ride and is less liable to give any trouble. On a test drive, still listen out for creaks from the cab and on the active mechanical variant adjust the comfort settings to ensure they work. Matched to a good seat, the ride in these tractors should be decent.

Current 7S Efficient cab layout is much like the earlier models but has refinements to include a new multi controller joystick and larger Datatronic 5 screen.

The mechanical cab suspension on 7700 models has different springs and damping when compared to the 7600 series and this, plus other tweaks, makes these and later models a lot quieter and more comfortable. If there are cab and front axle suspension problems, these are likely to be related to wear as

opposed to design problems.

The door seals can wear and the doors themselves may need a check as they can take a good slam to shut that in turn can lead to them needing to be adjusted. The bonnet catch can also fail. As to the finish, the black/ grey painted tinware can start to rust back from the edges and around the cab steps.

WHAT’S USED

Although the Dyna-VT transmission option is increasingly popular and is the default fit to most 7719 S and 7S.190 and 7S.210 tractors, the mechanical semi-powershift Dyna-6 24x24 transmission will be fitted to the bulk of used 7718 / 7718 S tractors. Well proven and reliable, the only point to watch for is a failed synchro between speeds 3 and 4 although even this is not common.

SUMMARY

With a pedigree stretching back to the 7600 series, 7700 and successor tractor models are all built around well-proven mechanicals. These are popular tractors so finding a used model with the spec choices you need should not be too difficult.

Used tractor prices can vary a great deal but expect pay upwards of £55,000 for a sound 2017 MF7718 Essential Dyna-6 with around 5,000 hours to 6,000 hours on the clock, a 2021 7718 S Dyna-VT Exclusive selling for upwards of £100,00 with under 1,000 on the clock. A 75.180 Dyna-6 Efficient pack with 650 rear tyres and AutoSteer ready, with low hours and the balance of a three year warranty remaining, could sell for around £125,000. An ex-demo 7S.210 will retail for over £135,000.

Guidance and ISOBUS control was offered on the 7600 series, with the hardware looking pretty much the same up until the introduction of the 7S. Although things may look the same the systems fitted to each generation have evolved. It is important to talk through your needs with a dealer to ensure any system fitted is compatible with your needs.

2,000,000 NEW HOLLAND

Returning to the 2025 Lamma Show in Hall 17 under the CNH banner, was New Holland who were showing their 2,000,000 tractor that was made at the Basildon factory that’s been going since July 1964. This 300 series machine was seen in another metallic blue variation on 15-16 January at the NEC.

However the main interest on the stand was the new T5 range of tractors with the T5.120 Dual Command on show. The refreshed range is made up of five models all powered by FPT 3.6 litre four-cylinder 80-117hp engines. The object has been to give the operator more comfort and better efficiently at the same time. The new cab carries Comfort Ride cab suspension, as standard as are the telematics that were

previously just available on the 6/7 300 range there is also auto guidance, the IntelliView™ 12 touchscreen terminal and ISOBUS Class 2 implement connection. There is also wet disc front pto and the rear lift has been beefed up from what I noticed when looking in detail.

Towering above everything else was the new New Holland’s CR Revelation C9.90 combine harvester (made in Belgium) that features the award winning IntelliSense™ automation system. It also features the Dynamic Flow Control™ with remotely adjustable rotor vanes, and the Opti-Spread™ Plus a spreading residue management system. The show saw a record crowd attend held in a very positive atmosphere despite what the government is trying to do to the farming community.

EXCELLENT CROWD AT 65TH DOE SHOW

Held in dry weather conditions with some sun on occasions the place to be over 4-6 February was the 65th Doe Show held at their HQ site at Ulting, Essex which was just full of machinery new and second hand and so much more.

This was the place to see the latest agricultural technology, but Does do not forget their glorious past with a ‘Tractors From Yesteryear’ working display. It was staged by Essex Ploughing Champion and now retired Doe second hand combine manager Paul Wylie and visitors were greeted at the entrance by the still fresh paint smelling Doe Tripe D no. D154, which everyone was enjoying.

The company is now under the leadership of Angus E Doe who has brought a breath of fresh air since he has taken over and the show had a new clean layout to it, which I liked. Ernest Doe now has 21 branches with the acquisition of two new branches at North Kyme and Sutton after the demise in August 2024 of the Lincolnshire based four-branch New Holland Burdens Group which went into administration. Does paid a significant sum for the privilege of expanding its business into Lincolnshire and saved approximately 34 jobs in the process.

But Does is not just about New Holland as they are extensive Case IH dealers amongst so many others franchises, but the CNH marquee was very impressive. For some it was the first time they were able to inspect

the Case IH AF10 Axle Flow combine with its 775hp engine and the largest grain tank made.

Out in the fields Paul Wyle had gathered a fine line of venerable machines to enjoy, the oldest being Max Cherry’s 1925 Fordson F which cost £170 new and was brought back to the UK by Corrin Harris and looks a treat. It was running on paraffin (heating oil) perfectly and as always Max’s ploughing is nothing but top class with his RSLD No. 15 plough behind.

Does were big Allis-Chalmers dealers before and after WW2 and had great success selling these machines and Neal Anstey was here with his former Cornish 1938 Allis Chalmers WF again like Max’s steed in original style condition. The 27hp engine was running on paraffin, but was oiling up the plugs, as it worked with the Ransomes RSLD plough. However it got better as the day went on.

It was great to see for the first time here Shaun Garrod from Attleborough, Norfolk the British High Cut Champion with his Fordson Dexta RSLM outfit another in original style. There was a huge crowd around his area as everyone admired his work.

Former multi-world ploughing champion John Hill (whose South Yorkshire family farm was dedicated to David Browns as they were not far from the Meltham Mills works) was demonstrating the Ford 5000 of Doe’s, but he spent some time setting the 4-furrow plough up and by the second day the plough was performing much better than the first day.

Former British crawler champion Colin Fenner was working reliably with Does own 1961 Triple-D with Ransomes TS59 5-furrow in the stony but heavy water sodden land and was an impressive sight. The man who had organised this section, so well for Ernest Does Paul Wylie unfortunately broke the Doe fourfurrow reversible plough on the back of the 130 so had to find a replacement late morning on the first day.

Looking good was the restored County built 8100 two-wheel drive SWC129W of H Siggers with Kverneland 3-furrow reversible behind which worked early on the Tuesday and had been supplied by Does in 1983. Not far away was Martin Shelly who is back to his best form and was operating the Doe Ford Force 4000 outfit so well.

All in all an excellent friendly show with lots of trade taking place which is what it’s all about quite frankly and no one got stuck in the car park despite the soft ground conditions everywhere else.

CHEFFINS TO SPONSOR NATIONAL

It all happens this year on Sunday 20 April at Blackthorpe Barn Rougham, Suffolk IP30 9HZ said organiser Vanda Parcel. The start is nestled in Suffolk’s beautiful countryside, just a few miles from the A14 junction 45 near Bury St Edmunds. One must remember the 2024 National raised £21,000 for charity last year.

Vanda said: “Entries are coming in at three to four per day. We have lost our original sponsor but Cheffins are going to sponsor us and they are taking their recently refurbished Fordson Dexta tractor around the major shows to get it seen which will be auctioned off in the October sale with proceeds going to their chosen charities.”

The road runners will then head off towards The Museum of Rural Life (now called The Museum of Food) at Stowmarket IP14 1DL for the halfway stop. Again there will be excellent food here, alongside the superb museum hall with many agricultural exhibits from steam ploughing engines to the oldest known Ransomes traction engine to tractors and so much more. The afternoon run will see the tractors head back to Blackthorpe Barn, via a different root.

Saturday night entertainment has been arranged for the participants who are travelling from the corners of the UK and Northern Ireland to attend. The entry closing date is 20 March 2025.

BIGGEST HORTICULTUAL COLLECTION COMES UP

Barry Hawkins have secured the Jim and Mel Wakefield horticultural tidy up sale which is going to be live and online, Saturday 5 April near Wisbech, Cambridge and it is going to be an interesting day that’s for sure.

Jim was born into horticultural machinery as his father had a nursery business in the area which featured Honda powered machinery. Jim set up his landscaping business with his wife Mel which continues today. Over the years they have built up one of the most original, cleanest and best restored horticultural collections in the UK which is very desirable indeed. You always notice their display when you walk around the horticultural sections of the better shows in the UK – it just stands out. The machines that I like best are not only the Mayfield Merlin’s, but the rare in the UK American Graham Bradley walk behind, which is in such original condition and looks

compares with the lovely original style Wolseley 16HS, Simplicity 42112 and 4108, Wheelhorse 706 and 800 to the amazing baby Mustang. We have just touched the tip of the iceberg here it will certainly be a chance to purchase some serious horticultural machinery on the 5 April.

Claas has extended the Arion 500 series with the addition of the Arion 570 CMatic featuring a genuine 180hp and a range of innovative functions with the focus on maximising customer benefits. The powerful four-cylinder engine with continuously variable, split-power Claas CMatic transmission is also available in the Night Edition.

The Arion 500 series marks the rise of the Claas standard tractor programme to the professional league. With growing demand for increasingly powerful, yet agile, four-cylinder models, Claas is launching a new top-of-the-range model with high-spec equipment for the series. This tractor class encompasses a broad sweep of applications ranging from tillage, drilling and general cultivation work to yard work with or without front loader, transport operations and municipal work.

With the Arion 570 CMatic, Claas presents its most powerful fourcylinder machine with 180hp and a wide range of unique assistance functions.

The Arion 570 CMatic works with a 4.5 l Stage V engine, which delivers a maximum output of 180hp without boost. The maximum torque of 730 Nm is available at 1,400rpm.

The Arion 570 CMatic has a reinforced Dana front axle to match its higher output. In addition, the compact, manoeuvrable four-cylinder is available with Trelleborg VF 710/60R38 tyres on the rear axle and VF 600/60 R28 on the front, a combination which effectively converts engine power to tractive power while protecting the soil. The Arion 570 CMatic also benefits from a 50:50 kerb weight distribution.

Large wheels and 50:50 weight distribution provide the agile Arion 570 CMatic with outstanding traction and ensure nimble handling of heavy implements.

INTELLIGENT AND EFFICIENT:

CMATIC, CEMOS, CMOTION AND THAT'S NOT ALL

The Arion 570 CMatic works with the latest configuration of the CMatic continuously variable transmission developed and manufactured by Claas Industrietechnik, which boasts two automatically selected drive modes, active powered zero and a top speed of 40 km/h or 50 km/h. This type of transmission has demonstrated its efficiency, resilience and reliability under challenging field conditions in runtimes amounting to over 10,000 operating hours. Its optimally coordinated powertrain management is equally impressive; acceleration, deceleration and direction changing are effortlessly smooth. Furthermore, the transmission software developed in-house maintains a perfect balance between engine speed and transmission ratio at all times, whatever the task, to enable powerful yet efficient work.

Wheel-loader mode is another stand-out feature of this CMatic transmission. When this mode is activated for front loader work, the transmission software uses intelligent torque and engine speed sensor monitoring to prevent the wheels spinning in push mode, for example in the silage clamp or when loading soil or solid manure –exactly like a wheel loader. In addition, precise speed control in the hydrostatic range, especially when stacking straw bales or pallets, ensures greater accuracy and relieves the operator's workload.

The automatic engine speed increase triggered by demand for more hydraulic power from the front loader ensures that load cycles are always performed with maximum productivity.

Furthermore, the Cemos dialogue-based system for optimising the productivity and efficiency of field and grassland work is available as an option. In terms of road travel, the automatic trailer stretch brake provides additional safety, especially when travelling downhill with trailers, as well as when working on slopes with attached implements – such as balers or slurry tanks. When decelerating, the automatic braking system automatically activates the air brakes of the trailer or attached implement as soon as critical thrust forces are exerted on the tractor. The system uses data from sensors in the transmission, which record engine drag torque and thrust in the drive train.

Standard equipment in the Arion 570 CMatic includes the ergonomic control armrest with 12-inch Cebis terminal and CMotion drive lever, which keeps the right hand in a relaxed position while providing access to more than 20 functions including cruise control and direction changing, along with tractor speed adjustment in drive lever mode.

The automatic trailer stretch brake assists with transport operations and work with slurry tanks and balers on sloping sites.

MAXIMUM COMFORT AND SAFETY

Operator comfort is firmly embedded in the DNA of today's Claas tractors. Here too, the Arion 570 CMatic impresses with its quiet cab with four-point suspension and optimally balanced Proactiv front axle suspension. A Premium operator package with leather steering wheel, air conditioning, Premium seat and electrically adjustable and heated rear view mirrors is available as an option.

The advantageous 50:50 kerb weight distribution – despite a 2.56m wheelbase designed with maximum manoeuvrability in mind – ensures a high degree of suspension comfort without the need for additional ballast as well as ensuring the safe transport of heavy implements and safe and trouble-free use of heavy trailers with a

FULLY CONNECTED TO THE NEW CLAAS CONNECT

The Claas Cemis 1200 terminal with 12-inch colour screen is available for automatic steering, precision farming and documentation. In addition, every Arion 570, unless otherwise specified, will be automatically connected to the new Claas connect. This enables digital operating manuals, lubricants and wear and spare parts specifically for the machine to be accessed from any end device via Machine connect, as well as the maintenance history and upcoming maintenance work. Moreover, machine performance data and current tractor location can be viewed at any time and licences such as Farm connect, Fleet connect and Field connect can be managed effortlessly.

If the farm already has a Claas connect ID, the Arion 570 CMatic is simply added to the existing machine fleet. In the absence of a Claas connect ID, one can be created when the tractor is purchased and used with a free five year Machine connect licence.

NIGHT EDITION ARION 570 CMATIC

Claas has a solution at the ready for customers seeking an even greater degree of exclusivity for their Arion 570 CMatic. The Night Edition of the new four-cylinder features custom grey paint on the rims, roof and side engine panels. The Claas logo on the side of the bonnet is white on a custom grey background, and Night Edition lettering is prominently displayed on the side of the bonnet. The emblem above the road light provides a nice finishing touch to the external design. Inside the cab, the steering wheel badge and floor mat display the Night Edition lettering.

WHAT’S NEW FULL CAB ELECTRIC ULTRA-COMPACT LOADER

A new version of JCB's 403E ultra-compact electric loader keeps the operator warm and snug as it eliminates at-source emissions and reduces a farm's carbon footprint.

The new machine is equipped with a fully glazed, heated cab designed to provide a comfortable environment while minimising its draw on battery power, despite having heated front and rear windscreens, a heated seat and three-speed blower, and auto control features that warm-up the cab without reducing the machine’s power reserves.

The 403E was introduced in 2023 with a fixed or folding open canopy as part of JCB’s growing E-Tech range of battery-electric farming and light construction machines that offer minimal running

costs, exceptionally low operator and bystander noise levels, and an opportunity for businesses to lower their carbon footprint.

POWERTRAIN

The 403E – JCB’s first fully electric ultra-compact wheeled loader – has a 20kWh lithium-ion battery pack, among the largest in the sector, providing four to five hours of continuous use in a mixed operating cycle.

This is sufficient for a full-day’s work on a typical pig, poultry or dairy farm, or in commercial horticulture, especially if top-up charges are taken during breaks.

loader arms makes the 403E a practical and highly manoeuvrable proposition for handling chores in and around farm and horticultural buildings.

And given an all-up weight of around 2.6 tonnes, the canopy and Full Cab versions of the machine can be transported quickly and easily between sites on a 3.5 tonne road trailer behind a 4x4 SUV or pick-up, or a light commercial vehicle.

CAB ENVIRONMENT

For the new 403E Full Cab loader, JCB installed a 2.2kW heater with three temperature settings and a “blower boost” function to rapidly increase the interior temperature for 10 minutes before switching off to conserve energy.

The heater is automatically disabled to preserve battery power if the cab doors are open, but in warmer months, the blower can be used to circulate air regardless of whether the doors are open or closed.

During cold periods, a timer function can be used to warm up the cab for 30 minutes while the battery and charger are connected so that the machine remains primed ready to work with a full charge.

A heated seat is an added comfort that will also conserve energy and run time by reducing the operator’s reliance on the cab heater, and heating elements rapidly defrost or clear condensation from the front and rear windscreen for clear visibility as work gets under way.

COMPACT POWERHOUSE

Claas has extended its range of agricultural tractors with the addition of the Axos 3 series. With their powerful, efficient engines, large wheels, high payload and generously proportioned cab from a maximum height to the upper edge of the roof of 2.50m, these compact tractors are positioned between the Arion 400 and the Axos 200.

Compact tractors in the under 120hp performance class spend a good 40% of their operating hours handling materials and working around the yard. But they must also be capable of mastering field and grassland work. So not surprisingly, customer requirements are wide-ranging: compact dimensions, low height to pass through shed and barn doorways, uncompromising manoeuvrability, high payload, agile handling and excellent operator comfort, to name just some of the attributes tractors in this class are expected to provide.

The Axos 3 series incorporates four models from 92hp to 120hp and is positioned between the Arion 400 and Axos 200.

CONVENIENT SHIFTING VASTLY REDUCES OPERATOR'S WORKLOAD

The Axos 3 is powered by the fuel-efficient yet lively 3.6 litre fourcylinder Fiat Powertrain (FPT) engine with modern Stage V exhaust gas aftertreatment. The four Axos 3 models have outputs of 92hp, 103hp, 112hp and 120hp with maximum torques from 366Nm to 466Nm at a low 1,500rpm. The engine block and radiator panels – highly rated for their performance and reliability – are familiar from the Nexos 200 and Axos 200. Their widespread use in the Claas tractor programme means that spare parts availability and service capabilities are a given.

The fuel tank holds 160 litres – enough for long working days. Furthermore, these tractors are approved to run on hydrotreated vegetable oils (HVOs), enabling their carbon footprint to be significantly reduced. Two engine speeds can be saved by the operator and applied at the press of a button as required.

To transfer power to the ground effectively while protecting the soil, the Axos 3 can be fitted with large rear tyres with an external diameter of up to 1.6m (420/85 R38 or 540/65 R 38). Large front wheels guarantee maximum efficiency in four-wheel drive mode and precise manoeuvrability even on difficult terrain and when using heavy implements.

Powerful four-cylinder engines, finely stepped gearboxes and large wheels on the front and rear axles guarantee efficient and groundsaving tractive force.

Engine speed reduction is provided by a modern, well-stepped six-speed transmission available in three versions to suit customer requirements and conditions:

• 12/12 (2 ranges) with mechanical reverser.

• 24/12 (2 ranges) with Twinshift powershift transmission and Reversgift clutchless reverser.

• 36/18 (3 ranges) with Twinshift powershift transmission and Revershift clutchless reverser.

In addition to the mechanical hand brake, versions with 24/12 and 36/18 gears can be fitted with an optional electric parking lock which is activated via the Revershift lever to the left of the steering wheel. Customers can also opt for Smart Stop, which enables the operator to stop and start without using the clutch pedal – a huge advantage during front loader and transport operations, and when baling round bales.

DISTINCTIVE CAB

Designed exclusively for the Axos 3, the cab has several distinguishing features that make the working day easier:

• With 30-inch rear wheels (380/85 R 30), the overall height of the Axos 3 remains below 2.50m, enabling low entrances to be negotiated with ease.

• The doors open up to 180 degrees to the front – enabling the operator to get in and out of the cab easily using the full door width of 88cm; especially useful in confined spaces such as the feed passage. Furthermore, the doors latch open in the forward position, a feature shared with the earlier Axos 300 and Celtis 300. The latch can be released from both the inside and the outside.

• The generously proportioned cab has ample leg room, numerous storage compartments and a full-size passenger seat.

• Large windows and a low bonnet ensure an excellent all-round view. An optional FOPS-certified transparent sunroof provides an optimum view up through the roof for front loader work. The front and rear windows swing open.

• The LED lighting package with up to 10 LED headlights turns night into day and facilitates work in poorly lit sheds and barns. Inside the cab, the retractable and adjustable steering console incorporating the instrument panel immediately stands out. Dynamic steering with adjustable steering ratio (optional extra) reduces the number of turns of the steering wheel between the steering locks from 3.8 to 1.9 when operating at speeds of up to 10km/h. The right-hand side console houses the key control elements. The electrohydraulic E-Pilot S can be installed in the right-hand side

console for fingertip control of all front loader functions.

ISOBUS terminals such as the Claas Cemis 700 can be installed in the cab for controlling ISOBUS implements.

The cab is characterised by a generous amount of space, large glass areas and optimised all-round visibility. The forward-opening doors can be locked in a 180-degree position.

HANDLES EVEN THE HEAVIEST IMPLEMENTS

With a payload of up to 3,600kg and a maximum lift capacity of 5,300kg at the rear (continuous lift capacity 4,000kg), the Axos 3 is not fazed by heavy implements. The optional integrated front linkage provides an impressive additional lift capacity of 3,240kg. Up to four double-acting mechanical spool valves with a flow rate of 60 l/min or 90 l/min are available for implements and front loaders, up to two of which have mechanical flow control.

The rear pto can be optionally supplied with either two or three speeds and automatic pto engagement/disengagement, while a 1,000rpm front pto is available to drive front-mounted implements.

Various models in the three Claas front loader series up to FL 100, FL 100 E and FL 100 C are suitable for the Axos 3. They can be operated either by the mechanical Propilot four-way control lever or the electrohydraulic E-Pilot S. The latter actuates Fastlock and Speedlink for hydraulic locking and unlocking of the front loader and its attachments, as well as automatic bucket return.

With a 3,600kg payload and maximum lift capacity of 5,300kg, the Axos 3 can easily handle heavy implements. Various front loaders from the Claas product range are available.

JOHN DEERE EXPANDS SELF-REPAIR SOLUTIONS

John Deere announced significant steps to support customers’ ability to maintain and repair their machines across the agricultural and construction industries. The digital solutions will be rolled out in the US in the second half of this year. European farmers will also benefit from these new functionalities. The enhancements will provide even more support to customers and independent repair workshops, including enabling to re-program John Deere manufactured electronic controllers.

It should be noted that the legal framework conditions for the US and EU market differ in some cases. In Europe, the RMI (Repair and Maintenance Information) regulations apply. In the EU 27 different EU regulations are legally framing the right to repair for the agricultural equipment industry. These regulations list all data to be shared with independent operators or workshops. Information is available for many model years, on the John Deere Repair and Maintenance Information website. The new functions primarily expand the repair options in the US. However, functionalities have also been added to European RMI, which already today offers many options. One new feature is the integration into the John Deere Operations CenterTM. This means that farmers can use the Operations Center not only to manage field and machine data, but also for maintenance and machine information. The extension offers a user-friendly, centralised platform with a comprehensive range of tools for the entire life cycle of machines. The new features include:

• Equipment Mobile – a free app with extensive machine information including operator and parts manuals, maintenance schedules, quick reference information, error code search and software updates for selected 4G connected machines.

• Shop.Deere.com – currently available in the UK and Ireland for finding and purchasing parts online

• Quick reference guides – offers various instructional videos and maintenance tips

• Customer service advisor – provides free digital manuals for clearing and updating codes, reading diagnostic data, and performing limited calibrations.

DOUBLE CAB PICK-UPS

Make the most of the beneficial treatment before it is gone is the advice from Chartered Accountants Saffery.

From April 2025, HMRC will no longer use the VAT definitions of ‘car’ and ‘van’ to classify double cab pick-up (DCPU) for benefit in kind (BIK) and capital allowance purposes, or when restricting car hire costs for calculating business profits.

Instead of treating DCPUs with a payload of one tonne or more as vans, the classification will be based on the vehicle’s primary suitability when it’s made available. With only vehicles “of a construction primarily suited for the conveyance of goods or burden of any description” being classified as vans, most (if not all) DCPUs will be treated as cars. Given this change owners may face:

HIGHER BIK CHARGES AND CLASS 1A NIC

From 6 April 2025, employees using DCPUs for personal use will face higher BIK charges. Consequently, employers will have more Class 1A National Insurance contributions (NICs) to pay. This will apply to both the use of the vehicle itself, which will be based on the vehicle’s list price and CO2 emissions, and for fuel for private

journeys. By comparison the BIK for a van in 2025-26 would be £4,020 for the vehicle and £769 for the fuel. Transitional rules apply to DCPUs bought, ordered or leased before 6 April 2025, allowing businesses to rely on the previous treatment until the earlier of the vehicle’s disposal, the end of the lease, or 5 April 2029.

REDUCED CAPITAL ALLOWANCES

From 1 April 2025 for corporation tax and 6 April 2025 for income tax, businesses buying DCPUs won’t be able to claim the same level of capital allowances as when these vehicles were classified as vans. For instance, a new van may qualify for 100% full expensing, whereas cars cannot. Transitional rules apply to expenditure incurred on DCPUs as a result of contracts entered into before 1 April 2025 for corporation tax and 6 April 2025 for income tax, where the expenditure is incurred on or after that date but before 1 October 2025. In such cases the old treatment will apply.

LEASING RESTRICTIONS

From 1 April 2025 for corporation tax and 6 April 2025 for income tax, businesses

leasing DCPUs with CO2 emissions of more than 50g/km (in practice, this will be virtually all of these types of vehicles) will only be able to get relief for 85% of the costs, compared to previously being able to deduct the full cost. Transitional rules apply to expenditure incurred on the hire of DCPUs where the contracts for hire are entered into before 1 April 2025 for corporation tax and 6 April 2025 for income tax, and the expenditure is incurred on or after these dates but before 1 October 2025. In these cases, the old rules will apply.

David Bussey, Partner, Saffery, and a member of the firm’s Land and Rural Practice Group, said: “Particularly given the transitional arrangements, you may be able to take advantage of these reliefs before they go.

“For example, an employer orders a double cab pick-up on 3 March 2025, but the vehicle isn’t available until 1 September 2025. As the pick-up was ordered before 6 April 2025, the previous rules continue to apply for BIK purposes until the earlier of the vehicle’s disposal, lease expiry, or 5 April 2029.

“The rules for reclaiming VAT when buying a DCPU remain unchanged.”

COWRECOVERY TO IMPROVE ‘DOWN’ COW HEALTH AND WELFARE

A dairy farmer and farm vet have joined forces to launch a new device to improve management, health and welfare of ‘down’ cows, as well as staff safety.

CowRecovery is a new handling system based on a specially modified telehandler bucket and moving technique designed to maximise cow welfare while minimising the risk of injury – to both the cow and staff. Launched at Dairy Tech in early February, the system has been perfected by farmers and vets in an extensive field trial involving 15 leading UK dairy farms and more than 10,000 cows over a 10-month period.

It comes with a comprehensive training programme developed by Synergy farm vets to ensure safe and consistent use, as well as straps and a halter.

The system is the brainchild of James Yeatman, who milks 400 cows in north Dorset. “Dealing with a ‘down cow’ is a common incident on farm and is a distressing experience for both cow and farmer,” he says. “Moving animals in a welfare friendly way is often a challenge due to a lack of manpower, limited availability of appropriate equipment and poor training of farm staff. Having spent over 30 years farming and dealing with the challenges of moving down cows, I decided it was time to make a change.”

The cause of a ‘down’ cow – which is unable to stand - can be caused by a difficult calving, milk fever, grass staggers, metritis, mastitis, a bone fracture or nerve paralysis. It’s important that cows are moved to a well-bedded yard, with food and water in easy reach, and are medically treated. They should also be helped to shift sides at least twice daily to release the pressure on their muscles and nerves.

“The cost of a fatality in early lactation is estimated to be £3,499, so saving less than two cows over the lifetime of the device will repay the investment,” notes Sam Gayton, commercial director at Synergy Farm Health.

The device, with its green and white ambulance livery, is manufactured by Albutt, which has a reputation for making very high-quality equipment designed to last a lifetime.

“Overall CowRecovery will improve the lives of cows and the people who care for them,” says Mr Yeatman. “Farmers will be encouraged to create a heat map of incidence, which will be reviewed with their vet to create an action plan to reduce down cow incidence.”

OPEN FARM SUNDAY ORGANISERS

BOOST SUPPORT FOR HOST FARMERS

LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) is offering their best-ever support package for hosts of Open Farm Sunday (OFS) events in 2025. The aim is to connect more farmers with consumers and bridge the knowledge gap by educating communities about farming with nature.

The event organisers have scheduled two free in-person workshops in March, a series of nine Zoom webinars running from late January to May, alongside a handbook with everything hosts could need to know, offering guidance and ideas to both novice and seasoned host farmers.

The five-hour workshops will be held in Yorkshire and Berkshire, providing direct, hands-on learning and shared experiences from past hosts. The webinars will address a broad range of topics for running successful events, including logistics, publicity, visitor engagement, and safety protocols.

Open Farm Sunday Manager, Annabel Shackleton, believes it has never been more important to connect the public with farming, and she encourages farmers to get involved and open their gates on 8th June 2025:

“This year, we’re firmly focussed on really building on our farmer support, equipping more farmers with the right guidance and tools to host an OFS event in June. By connecting with consumers and inspiring the public to appreciate the sustainable farming practices that nurture nature, we can show how we produce food they can trust, while protecting the environment,” she says.

The event’s 2024 impact report indicates that 96% of visitors left with a greater appreciation of the work farmers do, while 91% visitors were motivated to buy more British produce. This research highlights the benefit of engaging with the public to build greater consumer confidence and understanding.

“Making farming relatable and relevant to people depends on having access to farms to see for themselves what’s involved. Open Farm Sunday can really help bring that to life and cultivate positive connections,” adds Mrs Shackleton.

OPICO COMB HARROW GAINS HYDRAULIC TINE ADJUSTMENT

OPICO Comb Harrows are now available with the option of on-the-move hydraulic tine adjustment.

By providing the operator with the facility to alter the angle of attack without needing to leave the tractor cab, the weeding harrow is kept running at optimal efficiency as crop and soil conditions change across the field.

Current models require manual adjustment on each independent floating bed; however, with this hydraulic ability, operators will now have variable adjustment at their fingertips to allow fine tuning. Altering tine pitch changes how aggressively the harrow works and it is critical it set correctly to match both to crop and weed seedling growth stage. This new feature enhances the removal of unwanted weeds by maintaining the gyroscopic movement of the tine in the soil.

Organic farmers have been using mechanical weeding technology for many years but an integrated “hybrid” approach – combining chemical and mechanical

options – is increasingly being adopted as we enter an age of herbicide-resistant weeds. The reduction of available active ingredients in the UK to combat weeds along with the shift to environmentally-led policies are likely to encourage farmers to seek out alternative weed removal options that don’t derive from a can or bag.

With a range that spans working widths from 1.5m to 27m, OPICO has one of the widest offerings of weeding harrows on the market.

This season the company will have a 12m demonstration Comb Harrow fitted with an Air16E Pro Seeder available for on-farm trials across the country. MAXIMISING YIELDS AND THEREFORE PROFITS

Soil is the fundamental building block for arable farming, and keeping that soil in prime condition is the ultimate goal of farmers who are looking to maximise yields and therefore profits.

That ambition can often mean adding fertiliser, lime or organic matter to the soil in order to keep it in top condition or replenish nutrients, but with the cost of inputs coming off the bottom line, it’s equally important to add only what is necessary to achieve the soil’s maximum potential.

The only cost-effective way of achieving the best soil at the lowest price is to assess its

current make up accurately enough to allow the farmer to add exactly what is needed.

That ambition needs careful and comprehensive soil sampling and mapping, which is where Farm Image, based just outside Faversham in Kent, can play such a vital part in boosting soil health and productivity.

With 25 years’ experience in soil nutritional management services, the company offers a range of mapping and sampling services and uses the latest technology to help farmers understand what’s below the surface of their fields and

how they can improve it cost effectively. That technology includes a state-ofthe-art Veris U3 scanner that can identify the amount of organic matter at a range of points across a field and can also be used to map water capacity and nitrogen risk and inform variable rate planting, particularly for high value crops.

Standard soil sampling for pH, phosphate, potassium and magnesium is carried out by Farm Image using the standard RB209 method to give accurate averages for each field, while colour coded results highlight what action needs to be taken. Farm Image can also provide a nutrient management plan for the following four years.

“The Environment Agency has upped the number of inspectors and is increasingly keen to make sure farmers comply with the rules,” explained Farm Image director Louise Burley. “In addition, most Sustainable Farming Incentive actions and accreditation schemes require the farmer to know the make-up of

pH map viewed on Farm Image’s SoilSmart system his or her field, besides which it plays a big part in how productive it is.”

While hand augurs are still used on occasions, most of the work is now done using Can-Am all-terrain vehicles mounted with Wintex automatic samplers. While the standard depth for a sample is 15cm, Farm Image has also invested in a Wintex 3000, which can reach 90cms into the soil and can take three samples, one at 0cm to 30cm, one at 30cm to 60cm and one at 60cm to 90cm and is used for soil mineral nitrogen and carbon sampling.

Farm Image has built up an impressive reputation and its four-strong soil sampling team is kept busy year-round sampling fields from as far afield as York, Birmingham, Cornwall, Cumbria and the Isle of Wight, as well as the whole of the South East.

Georgia Straker, who looks after environmental compliance for the Farm Image team, pointed out that it wasn’t just larger farms that needed to be aware of their responsibilities.

“We had a call last year from someone with a 12-acre holding on which she kept a small flock of sheep,” she explained. “She had had a visit from the Environment Agency, which then sent her a long list of requirements which she was struggling to understand and deal with.

“We were able to advise her on their requirements and we also analysed her soil and pointed out where the organic matter from her flock would improve the soil, whereas she had just been spreading it anywhere. It’s not just a matter of complying with the rules, but of making the best use of what you have. She was delighted that we were able to help.”

Being able to create detailed maps of where nutrients are lacking allows farmers to use variable mapping when applying the necessary fertilisers and avoid using more than they need.

Another popular service offered by Farm Image is providing a pH analysis and mapping service, usually at one-hectare intervals, and creating a variable rate spreading map for lime. “Oilseed rape and barley, in particular, benefit from the right pH

level, and the relatively low cost of precision mapping avoids spreading lime where it isn’t needed,” said Louise. Farm Image offers a full liming service, including supplying and variable rate spreading.

Farm Image’s free online SoilSmart system also allows the farmers themselves to access all the data, which is stored in ‘the cloud’ and is available not just to the company’s expert analysts but to the individual farmer, who can use the data however they wish. The data itself is supplied by an independent laboratory to which Farm Image sends the samples it collects.

In another nod to rapidly advancing technology, Farm Image also offers satellite imagery using either the Sentinel

2 or Planetscope systems. Optical sensors mounted on satellites measure the variation in the crop canopy during the growing season and can allow Farm Image to prescribe variable rate nitrogen and plant growth regulator applications aimed at boosting low performing areas.

“Again, the farmer can use SoilSmart to identify areas that need more nitrogen and create their variable rate application programme themselves, or they can ask one of our team to set it up for them,” said Louise.

Other important members of the customerfocused Farm Image team are sales director Steve Hammond, Hannah Gorman, who looks after agricultural sales alongside Steve, and Bel De’ath, who handles compliance admin.
