Proud and privileged CEO Designate

Welcome to our Summer Suffolks publication in which it is hoped that we can keep the membership informed of events which took place over the summer months. The final event for inclusion in this publication is the results and sale prices for the Kelso Ram sales, perhaps the biggest event of the year where more tups change hands than any other event in the sales calendar.

I am proud and feel privileged to have been appointed CEO of one of the oldest flock books in the country and of a traditional British breed which was a key driver for my application for the post in the first instance. I must compliment the recruitment process which I considered to be very well managed with a structure, time frame and process which created a level platform for candidates at interview, an excellent indicator that the management of the Society is in good hands.

A little bit of history about me. I was previously CEO of the Aberdeen Angus Cattle Society finishing that appointment in December 2021, so am fully conversant with the running of a breed Society and the intricacies that offers. Previously I was involved in the food industry for 18 years having left agriculture in 2000 when things in the pig industry were particularly rocky. During that time I gained experience in food service, and retail including own label and a brand launch. I was fortunate enough

to be able to take a breath and seek something that may suit my skill base without being under pressure to do so. I saw the position advertised and took the prescribed steps in the application process, was invited for interview and was very honoured when offered the appointment to take up that offer.

At the time of writing, I have the luxury of enjoying a hand over period with Robin McIlrath. With my previous experience of heading up a breed society it is giving us the chance to focus on the Suffolk Society, breed, membership and all the intricacies that are bespoke to our breed. It is also giving me some time to just go through in my mind where we need to go from here and I am working on a plan that will have short, medium and long-term goals, setting out where we need to be over that period. This is shaping up and will be in a format to be able to present to Council at our next meeting towards the end of September for their input, comment, and adjustment where applicable.

I think I come into the Society and the sheep world at a very exciting time. Undoubtedly like all industries agriculture is facing huge increases in costs and unfortunately again this does not look like it’s going to be a short-term thing, and we will have to tailor our activities to suit these unprecedented times and make it work.

I strongly believe that there are two ways of challenging rising costs. One

is by cutting services, trimming costs and cutting down on any non-essential spend, but there is a point where you can cut no more. Alternatively, we can look at adding value to everything that we can. Combining the two creates a very healthy situation, so with frugal management and added value the space in the middle is increased assets, whether it be cash or time that can be allocated to further investment in promoting our breed in the marketplace, creating increased demand for tups and breeding females for you the membership.

I sincerely hope that I can get to grips with the general running of the Society with the help of Robin, Chair, Vice Chair, Council and staff in Ballymena relatively quickly, and with their and your support take the Society forward to its next level by engaging in new areas of promoting the excellence of the Suffolk sheep breed both “behind and beyond the farm gate”, a phrase which I use regularly, and it will become more apparent to you all in the next period why that is.

I very much look forward to getting out to meet as many of you as possible over the next few months at the various industry events, Society events, Branch meetings and sales that time will allow me to attend. I thank all who I have met to date for the very warm welcome that you have afforded me to the Society, and I hope that in time to come the members who appointed me can be credited with making the right choice!

2022 Sire of the Year

Salopian Solid Gold

Congratulations to Philip Poole and family who farm at Upper Battlefield, near Shrewsbury for breeding the 2022 Suffolk Sheep Society Sire of the Year, Salopian Solid Gold. A son of Solwaybank Rock Solid the Sire of the Year for 2021, Solid Gold is now under joint ownership between TJ and CR Boden of Sportsman’s from Mellor near Stockport, and Robert Jenkinson’s Dunfell Flock at Cliburn near Penrith. Purchased at Lanark in 2021 for the breed record breaking 200,000gns which smashed the previous breed record of 90,000gns by some margin. His progeny, and pen consigned by the Sportsman’s flock of Charlie Boden taking top honours for the three single ET consignments stood out at the Society Scottish sale in Lanark commanding serious bidding with all three of Salopian Solid Golds top price progeny being sold there for 60,000gns for Lot 151, 30,000gns for Lot 155 and 15,000gns for Lot 152 respectively totalling 105,000 for the three and an average sale price of 35,000gns taking the title of

Sire of the Year 2022. A further two lambs in the Boden pen at Lanark by the Sire of the Year, totalled a further 24,000gns delivering a successful sale and a sound return on investment for Sportsman’s.

Runner up in this year’s competition, was Bridgeview Belvenie bred by DP & RA Delves from Churchstoke in Powys whose sire is Bridgeview The Joker out of a 6,500gns Ballynacannon ewe, congratulations to them for their choice of stock.

Belvenie’s qualifying lots were all consigned at Lanark, in the 2022 87th Scottish area show and sale, two Lots 143 and 144 John Gibb’s (Cairnton Flock) with 143 leading the sale at 75,000gns, where the growing demand for the easy fleshing Suffolk breed ensured a buoyant trade, and a further one sired by Belvenie Lot number 126 entered by Stuart Duncan’s (Pennan Flock) taking the runner up Sire of the Year for 2022 sale average to 25,553gns for the top three priced progeny.

Congratulations go to the breeders of the two sires.
