INTRODUCTION
First of its kindonline version The Viti-Culture LIVE! 2020 line-up boasts a schedule of top speakers and master classes that you won’t want to miss! Although we won’t be meeting in person for the event, it’s now easier than ever to attend the show from the comfort of your own home. In 2019, the show was held for the first time at Plumpton College and hailed a huge success, with delegates from across the industry and the country attending the show. However, with the current crisis limiting the possibility of this the Viti-Culture team are very proud to have created a first of its kind, online version of the event.
4
VITI -CULTURE LIVE! 2020
Viti-Culture LIVE!, which Vineyard Magazine is once again media partner for, is completely hosted online from the www.viti-culture.com website. The event showcases the same level of fantastic seminars and gives attendees the opportunity to talk with exhibitors, using live chat to connect them on the day. The virtual stands will then remain live on the website until 31 December, something no other virtual show is offering currently and the Viti-Culture team hope this will help to support the industry through unprecedented times. The headline seminar will be presented by Master of Wine (MW) Richard Bampfield, joined by Stephen Skelton MW and vineyard manager at Ridgeview Matt
To be part of Viti-Culture 2020 go to www.viti-culture.com and we look forward to “virtually meeting” you”! Strugnell. The seminar - ‘Viticulture: Tackling the thorniest issues’ will present the trio discussing the biggest issues facing the UK wine industry currently. There will be five other seminars throughout the day, all of which can be seen in the timetable (on page 8), with some outstanding speakers covering topics from protecting against diseases and getting your yield forecasting right, to a look into the viticulture industry in South America. The day will conclude with a social wine tasting, hosted by Grape Vine Events, assisted by some very eminent guests including Oz Clarke who will be popping in! A host of show updates and announcements will also be made via the Grape Vine Events newly launched forum for the industry –www.soil2cellar.com. To add even more value for vineyards, the show is also hosting free space on the website for fourteen virtual cellar doors. Event organisers, Grape Vine Events said: “As a visitor, what could be better than viewing the vast
array of supplies and services available to viticulturists, attending high-level seminars and be able to view and shop at an array of UK vineyards virtual cellar doors all in one place? Everything will remain in place until 31 December 2020, so visitors will still be able to dip in and out right up to the end of the year! No other virtual show is offering such an extended platform – and we are proud to be able to support our industry to this extent through these uncharted times.” Whether you’re already an established grower or interested in starting up, Viti-Culture provides the perfect opportunity to speak to experts about any aspect of wine production. The exhibitors and speakers will appeal to those who are establishing a vineyard as well as those interested in a variety of elements from packaging and marketing, crop protection and vineyard management systems alongside many other topics. Viti-Culture Live! shows adaptability and determination of our sector writes Matthew Berryman, CLM. The announcement that this year’s summer agricultural shows would be cancelled as a result of coronavirus was a big disappointment to many people. It was the right thing to do, of course, but it meant the loss of an important opportunity to meet friends, contacts and clients. Call me a little old fashioned, but I don’t reckon digital communication will ever completely replace face-to-face interaction which is one of the joys of working in my profession. I was particularly disappointed about the cancellation of Viti-Culture which had been due to take place at Plumpton College, as last year’s inaugural gathering had been such a success (I didn’t have very far to travel – I can actually see Plumpton from my office window). It’s testimony to the power of the internet, however, that an online iteration – Viti-Culture Live! – has been put together from a standing start at such short notice. Taking place on 9 July, it will feature live seminars and give ‘visitors’ the chance to engage with exhibitors, via a new web platform. Those stopping by the website can access services, advice and supplies, plus have the opportunity to network. As event sponsor, we were very keen that people had this opportunity and, for us, it will be an important chance to talk about the topics in which we specialise, such as site identification and acquisition, leases and joint ventures, and planning applications.
6
VITI -CULTURE LIVE! 2020
The industry had been crying out for an event which brought together growers, processors, machinery and equipment suppliers, agronomists and consultants – and the inaugural event established itself as a great place to do business. As well as being indicative of the power of the online world in which we live, Viti-Culture Live! 2020 is now testimony to the determination of everyone involved to keep the momentum going until next year when hopefully we can all reconvene in-person. It also demonstrates the creativity and adaptability of everyone in the sector. This is no surprise, because viticulturists are nothing if not versatile. There again, they need to be, coping with constant challenges and changing circumstances – whether that’s unexpected weather, government policy or new consumer trends. The effect Covid-19 is having on the industry will understandably be uppermost in people’s minds at Viti-Culture Live! with many entirely focused on the difficulties of getting through the short-term. The scale of coronavirus-related problems was highlighted by a WineGB survey early in lockdown showing that two-thirds of businesses had cashflow worries, half had delayed strategic investment, and half of the larger vineyards had concerns about the availability of seasonal workers. Some businesses, sadly, have already gone under and it will test others to the limits, but the attributes that so many growers, winemakers and investors display – their specialist knowledge, their business
acumen and their resilience – will see many through. The appetite for an online event demonstrates the optimism that still exists about the long-term, too. Whether it’s in-person or electronically, my job as a consultant is to support those in the viticulture industry with honest, objective opinions – whether that’s giving advice on the upper limit they should bid for a piece of land or the likelihood of getting planning permission
to build a winery if they do acquire that land. My role is to help clients come up with a business plan that is commercially sound and helps them achieve their personal aspirations. Let’s hope that we see you back in person in 2021, but I’m very much looking forward to connecting online and making the most of the opportunities that digital communication offers on 9 July this year.

Coolhurst Vineyard LADY ELIZABETH Our third Lady Elizabeth vintage is the 2016, released to the open market in January 2020. As with all our wines, the grapes were carefully selected hand-harvested fruit but in 2016 they came from a reduced yield following a diďŹƒcult year with tough growing conditions. After a couple of spring frosts we had a very poor July and August but then some stunning September and October days. With the vines carrying less fruit, what berries there were ripened beautifully and we had a dry harvest with lovely clean fruit. An attractive pale salmon colour with a soft, fine mousse. Tangy, tangerine fruit on the front palate, and really pronounced Pinot Noir character on the finish.

CLASSIC CUVÉE 2014
BACCHUS 2016
Light straw gold in colour, beautifully textured, dry, fresh citrus flavoured, with consistent, long lasting bubbles. Grapes: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Meunier and Pinot Gris • Fresh on the palate • Dry with a cleansing lemon biscuit flavour • Gentle, playful bubbles. Roger Jones of The Buyer says: “Clean, fresh, persistent, focused. Tastes as if it has some age. Biscuity lemon peel complex textured. Gentle bubbles, refined, elegant finish. There’s a nutty praline nose. Soft stone fruit apricot. Has a weighty, luxurious feel. Great wine.”
The Bacchus grapes are hand harvested and transported to the winery where they are destemmed, crushed and pressed before undergoing a cool fermentation in stainless steel tanks to maintain a lively acidity and fresh, delicate aromatics in the wine. Mouth-watering citrus and green apple flavours with enticing aromas of elderflower and gooseberry. If you like Sauvignon Blanc you will love England’s signature white grape Bacchus! Grape Varieties: Bacchus (100%) Colour: White Product Type: Still Alcohol: 11.5% Bottle Size: 75 cl Closure: Screwcap Residual Sugar: 7 g/L Suitable for vegetarians and vegans

LEONORA’S 2017
KING’S FUMÉ
Featured by Susy Atkins as one of her top 20 English wines, Sunday Telegraph 14 June 2020. Well-priced, food-friendly white, made with Kernling grapes and offering plenty of peach and light pineapple with a hint of smoke at the end. Perfect picnic wine with ham, chicken and salads. Kernling vines have Riesling as one of their parents and the wine has a fully-dry Riesling style. No capsule over the cork, part of our commitment to reduce plastic and to show off the beautiful traditional cork. Throwing a light dusting of harmless tartrate crystals, “wine diamonds”, the Aussies call them, as it matures. Pour carefully.
A lightly oaked dry white wine, rich in body and complexity, with elegant and persistent aromas of vanilla, orange peel, cream and peach. Unrefined and unfiltered, the wine is made using low intervention techniques to retain its true nature*. King’s Fumé is named in honour of King Charles I who donated a special window dated 1626 to Stanlake Park Wine Estate. This elegant, White Burgundy style wine was picked by Decanter magazine as one of the best English wines within its category. Choose this wine if you like... Mersault, Chablis, Pouilly Fuissé, Chardonnay. All our wines are suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
VITI -CULTURE LIVE! 2020
*Being unfiltered, some harmless and tasteless deposit in the bottle is completely normal and doesn’t have an impact on the taste or quality of the wine.

SPARKLING ROSÉ 2017
PINOT NOIR RESERVE
From our small vineyard in the heart of the Kent countryside, Far Acre Farm proudly presents its first sparkling rose. We grow, produce and bottle small batches of quality sparkling wine – all on site in Marden Beech from start to finish. This beautifully balanced extra sec rosé is from gently pressed Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grapes, lovingly tended by our family of four living in the farmhouse. Delightfully quaffable and refreshing, with minimal preservatives added – so a better morning follows! It offers an enticing nose of cherry bakewell and rich fruits. Serve lightly chilled. Suitable for vegans.
The grapes were hand harvested in September 2017 and the juice fermented in stainless Steel vats before the aging in oak barrels. A perfect accompaniment with lamb, fish, a pasta dish, cheese or on its own. Grape varieties: Pinot Noir Précoce 2017 Style: Light Colour: Ruby Nose: Vanilla, red fruits and very light oak Palette: Bold flavours of blackberry with hints of smokey vanilla and well balanced tannins
