STEELCASE NEXT EDUCATION HUB

Fall 2019 | Four Year Studio | Selected Entry in Steelcase Competition

The McMillian plan, proposed in 1901, developed an urban network of parks into the grid city to unify back to the ‘monumental core.’ The systems of parks are connected by angular voids creating a strong movement toward the monumental core. Concept is inspired by the urban park system created through angular voids and the juxtaposition of the city and its grid. Angular circulation is informed by the space’s rectilinear grid. The interior atmosphere is defined by industrial elements referencing the city, while natural elements, such as wood, felt and plant life allude to the park systems.

Swivel Seating Chairs allow for easy turning so all students can adapt to location of the professor and digital or analog content.

4

Active Learning Classroom According research this type of classroom contributes to better test scores and a higher class retention rate comparing to traditional lecture style layouts.

5

Inbetween Spaces According to research, inbetween spaces create a third place for students and faculty to meet while eliminating the sense of hierarchy created within private offices.

6

Floor Change Change in flooring reinforces concept by mimicking the city edge and street void that creates movement toward the parks. In addition, it shows juxtaposition of natural and industrial elements.

ACOUSTICAL + VISUAL PRIVACY

Privacy in the next generation of space is becoming limited, but is important to the users of the space.

LECTURE + TEST LAYOUT

Acoustical privacy in faculty offices and private tutoring rooms is achieved through Steelcase VIA wall systems. Steelcase Casper Cloak allows for visual privacy, while still letting natural daylight into the space. Felt application on ceilings and felt covered light fixtures also contribute to better acoustic quality.

Digital + Analog Tools According to Steelcase’s Blended Learning white-paper, analog tools are being used along side digital tools to collaborate and create. Cognitive mapping research shows writing and diagramming physically helps to recall information more effectively.

2

Non-Lecture Style Classroom According to Steelcase’s Blended Learning whitepaper, non-lecture layout encourages teachers to spend more time working with students and small groups and less time lecturing.

3

Faculty Spaces According to Steelcase Research, the future provides an array of places for faculty to meet, unlocked + unclaimed offices and natural daylight in shared spaces rather than private offices.

4

Mediascape + Verb Media Table This furniture, found in all classrooms, integrates digital tools while allowing students to collaborate together on group work.

5

Steelcase VIA System VIA supports acoustic privacy, allows for easy technology integration and gives flexibility for long term rearrangement.

6

Makerspace This space type gives students the opportunity to have a hands on experience in making while engaging with each other in a group setting. Here, students can work on light to medium making.

INNOVATE

VIRGINIA TECH INTERDISCIPLINARY HEALTH + DESIGN RESEARCH CENTER Spring 2019 | Third Year Studio | Haworth Project Award Recipient

The concept of Innovate is found from the process of innovation. To innovate is to apply changes to something by introducing new methods and ideas. Inspired by the sites original characteristics, Innovation is implemented by introducing technology, well being and research while hinting to the sites original elements. Materials both exposed and added, capture the raw industrial feel alluding to its previous use.

MFR LIBRARY MONTGOMERY FLOYD REGIONAL LIBRARY

Spring 2019 | Third Year Studio | Team Project with Jessica Zapata

Set as the end destination to Huckleberry Trail, the MFR Library has served the Blacksburg community since the 1950s. Originally a railway depot, the site symbolizes the shift in time and corresponding usage. Design concept integrates the idea of tracks, destinations and passageways. To juxtapose this, implemented of modern technology happens in the Makerspace and Teen Space. Pairing the libraries historical context with its modern-day usage emphasizes the concept of shifting while creating a new and refreshing atmosphere for the Blacksburg community.

The perforated canopy behind the booth seating responds to the shape of the café space, keeping the space permeable yet enclosed. The suspended metal panels pull from the steel element of the train tracks yet are rethought to add a modernized element. Gradient circles represent the slow shift of time and the diffusion knowledge through literature. The café itself is a change from the traditional library and serves as the end destination as one travels through the library.

THESIS RESEARCH BOUTIQUE HOTEL THESIS

Fall 2019 | Senior Studio | Part 1

Thesis research includes extensive boutique hotel research, case studies, code analysis, plan prototypes, sustainabiltiy research + site analysis. This project consists of a 30,000 sq. ft. boutique hotel in Prague, Czech Republic located in Old Town Prague near the Vltava River. The developer wants to design a curated hospitality experience for high-end hotel guests and travelers through unique rooms, a five star dining experience, and luxury amenities while following sustainability guidelines. With increasing knowledge of the effects of space on the environment and wellbeing of humans, this thesis will focus on WELL and LEED standards throughout the entirety of the design process to ultimately support a healthier experience for the duration of the stay, while promoting long term wellness for all users who visit.
