PROJECT 3 - PORTAL DESIGN - PROCESS BOOK
DESIGN BRIEF
As an exercise in large-scale web development, the students of the Interactive Design Graphic Design class worked as a “class development team” to design a communications portal for all design students at UNL. This website was created with user center design in mind, UCD requires that designers not only analyze and foresee how users engage but also test their designs.The primary goal for this site is to create a one stop source for (in the order of importance): jobs, internships, news, events, resources and ideally to foster a design community. The class was broken up into 5 groups of 4-5 students that would initially focus their ideas on one of the 5 categories, and design a wireframe for their section. After each group came up with solutions for their category the class shared their wireframes and data and each student was to make “one wireframe design” of all the data that was cohesively designed. After the wireframing process the project was broken into an individual project and each student was to make a Portal Design home page and one inside page to show their personal Interactive Web Design skills. A core concept we will be focusing on is UCD or user-centered design. User-centered design is a design philosophy that puts the user of a product, application or experience at the center of the design process. In UCD, a designer strives for a detailed understanding of the needs, wants and limitations of the people who will use the end product and then makes design choices that incorporate this understanding. UCD requires that designers not only analyze and foresee how users engage but also test their designs.

GROUP WIREFRAMES
These wireframes were made with a group of 4 Interactive Design students including myself. The goal was to come up with a logical system for the UNL Design portal website. We were the “Jobs� group, so our focus was on coming up with a wireframe design for the jobs page. This included finding what content would a jobs page include, figuring out a navigation system, making a hierarchy, and showing the gestures of what each page would consist of.

We’re looking to hire a designer with both interactive and print experience. In a designer, we want someone who can take direction but also add something to the mix. You must have impeccable attention to detail and be thoughtful and organized in your production skills. You should have a proven experience bridging the gap in print and interactive. Portfolio should include a breadth of experience in Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign and basic knowledge of Flash and CSS/HTML. We expect to see strong attention to brand details and conceptual skills.

Desired Skills and Experience Requirements

“We reviewed the synopsis he had for the book and looked at the photographs they took on their research trips,” Rask said. “I really liked the art of the indigenous peoples there, so when I did the design, I really wanted to have that be part of it.” Over the holiday break, she received an e-mail from Syron telling her they wanted to use her concept for the book. The original assignment was for a book jacket, so with Rask’s permission, the concept was re-worked as a cover, an e-book and interior chapter headings. “She said she and her husband [Dombrowski] were looking over the covers and mine stuck out to them, so they wanted to know if they could use the concept and illustrations with credit,” Rask said. “So I said of course. I’m just a beginning graphic

The next step after wireframing is getting in to the actual design phase. Each student was to take the collaborated wireframes and design a home and inside page for the UNL portal design. I decided to focus on the Jobs pages since that is what my group originally focused on.

Crisha Yantis, a third-year Master of Fine Arts in ceramics student from Olympia, Wash, has two pieces featured in the book “500 Figures in Clay Vol. 2” by Lark Ceramics. The book series features the best contemporary work in fields such as ceramics, jewelry making, woodworking and more. The first entry in the series, “500 Teapots” was published in 2002, and since then, more than 35 books have followed. “500 Figures in Clay” was juried by ceramic artist Nan Smith. Each piece had to be based on and recognizable as the human form. “It’s a cool selection,” Yantis said. “When I was starting out as an undergraduate, I really looked at these books a lot to study surface and how people are doing things, so it’s really educational. And now, it’s kind of fun because I have friends who are in this next volume with me.”

USABILITY TESTING
User-centered design means designing for individuals. It means putting the human or user at the center of the design process. This portal design is about the UNL design students, so what better way to see if this design is working then have design students fill out a usability-testing questionnaire. This was designed to get the feedback of the people who would mostly be using this site to see what works, and what could be improved into the final design stage.
FINAL HOME PAGE DESIGN
After reviewing the usability-testing questionnaires, and taking a second look at my site myself I made some refinements to the final design. I decided to make a more “designed logo� to clearly get across that this is a design portal for the university of Nebraska Lincoln. I refined how a page would look when clicking into the categories, and showed how the site would gesture and move from click to click, page to page, and be responsive.

The News & Events page is what changed the most after reviewing the usability-testing questionnaires. The biggest question was what would an inside page look like? I wanted to keep with the gird layout system and keep it clean and consistent. So the inside page would open with the same image/info blocks and then the content below with more images mixed in.

The exhibition includes the artwork of 33 undergraduate students who have been enrolled in a studio art class in the Department of Art and Art History at UNL within the last 12 months. A reception will be held on Friday, March 21 from 5-7 p.m. in the gallery, where the awards will be announced. Awards include the Jean R. Faulkner Memorial Awards, the Department of Art and Art History Freshman and Sophomore Awards, the Hixson-Lied College of Fine and Performing Arts Dean's Purchase Award and Entry Fee Awards. This year's juror was Amanda Smith, who received her Master of

Smith has exhibited her work across the Midwest and is the recipient of numerous awards, honors and fellowships, including the Dan and Barbara Howard Creative Achievement Award in 2006. She is currently a visiting assistant professor at Doane College in Crete, Neb.
