I N MO T I ON SSEF ARCHITECTURE COMPETITION The theme of the 2015 SSEF design competition was recycle. Renovwned as the city that never sleeps, New York is in constant motion. Whether day or night, for business or pleasure, the city’s people are invariably active. However, there remains a decrease in nighttime vitality in one vast area in particular Central Park. While the park is imperative to the city’s core, it lacks a chronic state of flux, due to its crimeful reputation. By recycling old taxis - a common form of travel in the city - we provide an innovative way to reuse one of New York’s most historic symbols and to create instances throughout the park where New Yorkers may interact with their remains every day. As well, the lightscapes newly promotes Central Park as a night time destination that is safe and engages the entire city. In collaboration Samiha Meem

The taxicabs of New York are widely recognized icons of the city. In 2007, city officials outlined a project to replace existing Ford Crown Victoria taxis and others by 2014. This transition leaves tens of thousands of retired vehicles. The lightscapes provide a recycled solution that takes advantage of the aluminum and steel of the cars in a useful way. They promote a maintenance to the iconicism of the vehicles by allowing them to remain within the city in a new advantageous style.

L I V I NG MACHI N ES Living Machine Technology provides lasting water solutions through the use of cutting-edge science, plants and beneficial bacteria, to efficiently filter and reuse wastewater. With only 1% of the Earth’s water considered as usable freshwater, water treatment and reuse presents itself as a clear solution to the overconsumption of freshwater today. While the concept of recycling water has existed for several decades, Living Machine Systems have perfected and streamlined these technologies. With major scientific and technological advances, the new generation of Living Machine has become more practical, reliable, and cost efficient, with a smaller footprint. By combining elements of conventional wastewater technology, with the purification processes of wetland ecosystems, the building’s wastewater is treated and removed of organic wastes, nutrients and pathogens. This technology no longer relies on activated sludge to do the core of the work. Advanced biomimicry uses beneficial microorganisms, wetland plantings and sophisticated control systems to reliably and efficiently produce water treated to the highest reuse standards. PRIMARY TANK AND COMPONENTS:

Untreated wastewater enters this tank, for primary settling, screening and treatment.

STAGE ONE LIVING MACHINE WETLAND CELLS:

Beneficial biofilm grows on the porous gravel, filling the cells. these biofilms consume the waste in the water.

TIDAL MODULE:

The tidal flow wetland cells contain automated valves, high efficiency pumps and water level sensors to create tidal cycles.

A M AK ER’S SP ACE 1A FINAL STUDIO PROJECT The concept behind this project, was to design a 100 square metre residence that would temporarily be occupied by a “maker”. A maker was described in this case as either an artist, craftsman, writer, computer repair man, etc. Considering this, I directed my project to accommodate the ambitions of a crafstman. The site provided was small, and oriented with its western face parallel to the grand river in Cambridge, Ontario. Bounded by a pathway, I idealized a small loft -like residence of corten steel, containing a small workshop, gallery, living accomodations, and private outdoor space.

AN OASIS: ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN

For this project, I was asked to design an Oasis as an architectural response to the particular climate issues of one of the climate zones (cold, hot arid or hot humid). It was intended to be a small building that may be able to be occupied by one to four people on a transient basis. It was also designed to be completely passive. Therefore requiring the use of building materials, the sun, wind and light to create the comfort of the space. I chose to approach the project through the hot- humid climate of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Taking advantage of its most recognizable aspects the statue of Cristo. When intending to make a proper pilgramage, hiking up the mountain of Corcovado appears to be the way to go. But with its steep inclines and never ending forests, it can prove to be an intimidating adventure. The Sol Mate Oasis is the perfect peaceful sanctuary for the weary traveller to enjoy.

Although surrounded by forestry, the large overhang provides shading for the direct sunlight which was not already diffused. Revolving wall panels catch and direct air flow through the hut, and can be independently modified.

A PUBLIC LIBRARY: 1B FINAL STUDIO

A

As a part of this design, it was required to create a multi - purpose library (including either a hacker’s lab, bicycle repair shop or wood shop) on an allotted site off of St. Clair Avenue West in Toronto. Throughout this project, I struggled to answer the question“What is a library?”. I appreciated the fact that a library could be used as a multi purpose building - for work, or pleasure; but as well considered the direction the library will head. What may a library be considered in ten years? Within the extruded carrels along the second and third floors of my design, I attempted to resolve my considerations. Thus creating the following parti: An architectural environment that aims to educate, inform and entertain a variety of audiences, with the goal of stimulating individual and collaborative learning.
