December 2014 / January 2015 - Kelsey Watson
I was born and grew up in Auckland, New Zealand so this publication is a very nostalgic one for me. Auckland was a fantastic place to grow up. There was a real outdoorsy vibe growing up, kids didn’t really sit inside watching telly all day. I was always outside biking, running about, playing sports and exploring. It is also a relatively safe place, so my friends and I would tell our parents we were going out for the day and come back before it got dark just in time for some dinner. No cell phones back then, so you would just let your parents know where you were going and if they needed you they would know where to find you. Auckland is also surrounded by water so most places are close to the beach. I never lived more than about a 10 minute walk from the sea. Picture to the left is me reading on the deck on my family home in Campbells Bay, Auckland.
When you leave Auckland CBD and start driving in any direction you begin to start seeing sights like these in less than 30 minutes. There is always a new place to explore in Auckland. Recently on my trip back I discovered the Okura Bush Walk (photographed on the right) which is a 10 minute drive from my house and yet I had never been. It was beautiful, full of spectacular veiws and a hidden beach which can only be accessed via a 40 minute walk.
