The Importance of Thinking Through Designs KELSIE WELLS
DESIGN THINKING
This course provides a great introduction into the design world and shows some of the behind-the-scenes aspects of design. This course teaches beginning art students methods that allow them to effectively and thoroughly solve problems with design. By discussing and practicing standards for process,, like brainstorming techniques and generating quality research, alongside completeing hands-on assignments,, students learn to tackle problem solving with ease. The process of each solved problem is the most important element in shaping the final design. In order to have the most optimal final product, you will want to revise and think about every aspect of the design and its purpose..
PROCESS
The process of coming up with a solution to a problem should not be rushed. It is important to gain as much information and understanding about the problem, and those it affects, as you can. There are many ways to cultivate findings and expand your knowledge:
Creating a connection and understanding of the problem by hearing from those affected and thinking about what is causing the problem.. Conduct research to gain fact-based knowledge to help shape your personal understanding. Generating primary research,, like interviews and observations, as well as secondary reserach, like reading news articles and watching documentaries, are excellent ways to gain information. Coming to a final conclusion about the problem and being able to understand its causes and efffects allows you to begin to brainstorm an array of solutions that could potentially make a difference in those who experience the problem. Deciding on a deliverable for the solution to spread the information/ and knowledge you've found and potentially solve the problem.
CONNECT
Reflecting on your personal experineces with the problem and asking yourself what you know about it can help kick start your connection. Having an empathic view on these issues will help you see it from different point-of-views. These emotional approaches are sometimes not taken seriously, but they are still important. James L. Adams quotes: “... they do give importance to feelings, and [...] they have been prominent in many theories of creativity
Conducting research by going to the library, researching online databases, and watching documentaries can provide you with factual evidence and notable scholar's views and opinons on the topic. Primary research also provides helpful information information from direct sources that experience the problem in some way.
BRAINSTORM
When it comes to the solution, there are many ways to efficiently sort through that information...Learning new techqniques for brainstorming helps to see the big picture and you may even discover things you'd never think of right off the bat. Here are a few common techniques designers use:

CONCLUDE
Once you have reached an overall understanding of the problem, you may begin to solve the problem. Using brainstorming techniques as well as researching similiar problems and solutions will help lead the way when thinking about a solution.
Gathering up all of your data and information into one local source, like a file on your computer, an excel sheet filled with source links, or a notebook helps in the process. You’ll want to document your valuable findings to help solve the problem. Some type of “process binder” will help keep you on track and organized.

DELIVER
The last part of the process is creating a deliverable that provides a platform for the solution to your problem.. After all that hardwork and research, you'll want to share your findings and hopefully solve a problem. While the options are endless, these are some common choices: Posters
Pamphlets
Videos
Campaign
Legal
Reform
It’s important to chose your an appropriate del;iverable for your audience. You'll want the information to be easily digestable, understood, and aesthetically pleasing. For example, making an online blog to reach an audience of elderly people facing elder abuse, may not be the most effecitve becuase of their limited computer use.
LEARN
Ultimately this course will open your mind beyond its current limitations. You will discover new, innovative ways to assess problems and come up with a realistic soultion. The techniques you learn are easily translatable into your everyday life problems. Becoming a more level-headed, thorough thinker will sharpen your problem-solving skills for all areas of your life. Although you may be satisfied with your current strategies, you will be surprised with how far you can push yourself to limits you’ve never beens.
